"Welcome back to the Neighbourhood Watch with Strange Neighbours. We hope you enjoy this month's meeting. Make yourself comfortable again, there's snacks on the table. This month's meeting involves a presentation of some our favourite tracks from the neighbourhood, and we also have a guest presenter. Guest presenter: Spiro Catalano Spiro Catalano's groovy tech house sound has been making waves all over California and the world, with this inspiration drawing heavily from early 2000's hip hop and skateboarding culture. Since learning to DJ at age 12, Spiro has grown into a powerhouse producer with releases on record labels such as CUFF, Farris Wheel, Wyldcard, Late Night Munchies, and more. His early DirtyBird style has caught the eye of VonStroke himself, earning Spiro a spot at DirtyBird Campout in 2018 at the Bass Lodge for the afters. Although Spiro was born and raised in Northern California, where he's still based today, he has also played at staple SoCal venues such as Blind Tiger, Bardot, and Wicked West, which is no surprise given his unique DJ-ing style: Spiro does not believe in preparing mixes when he can overlay acapellas over beats to create his own twist on song. It's truly a rare treat to hear live. Notably, this year, his music was played out on several stages at the Coachella Arts & Music Festival, as well as Connections Festival in Brazil and even at Ministry of Sound in 2022. Spiro Catalano hails from humble beginnings, but given his rapid upward trajectory, it's clear he's a rising star in the world of house music. We had the pleasure of interviewing Life on Planets over Zoom video! House music has seen a reinvigoration in recent years via progressive creatives seeking to fuse classic disco, soul, funk and R&B with modern electronic sensibilities meant to relate to dance floors everywhere. At the forefront, artists like Walker & Royce have strove to lead this diverting wave of music via their label Rules Don't Apply. For its latest release, the imprint joins forces with true-blue creative Life on Planets. Explore wayfaring creativity and full-fledged euphoria via the Nomad Lyfe EP, out NOW. Nomad Lyfe is a two-sided EP featuring vocal led, dynamic dancefloor tracks. The project leads with the title track, which opens behind funky, static basslines. “Don't know where I'm about to stay tonight - all I know is Imma be alright” sets the tone for a DIY adventure in sound and intention. The lyrics proffers listeners to find independence in living their “Nomad Lyfe,” paralleled by freewheeling creativity experienced in the production. “UDidIt2Urself” is the B-side track on the EP - where fans will find more R&B-enthused production accented by melodic elements and dazzling arps.The project was written in Baltimore - Life was living in an old row-house run by art collective, The Holy Underground. Paired with samples and virtual synthes, the producer used pitched down guitar and vocals recorded in his bedroom to create the final product. This accents his performance setup, which is a hybrid of DJ/live sets that include singing, guitar and spinning a wide array of influences. I was alive, but only a year old at the time, but 1981 is when new wave and electronic music was starting to blossom. It was raw, simple, and stands the test of time. 2.) What single night out has been the most memorable for you? As a DJ? As an attendee? As a DJ, I’d have to say opening for Denney this year. It was DVINA’s Valentine’s dDy show, there was a lot of love in the air that night. As an attendee, second to last Justin Martin show at Shady Park, he ended up at the after party I went to. He’s such a cool dude. 3.) What is one track that never gets old to you no matter how many times you play it? I feel every DJ has a track they LOVE, but you obviously can’t play it all the time. I played RitheSim by Bruno Furlan a ton. It played it first in my Campout set. I played it in several sets after that too. It’s super fun, and the lyrics are pretty much the life of a DJ. Had to retire for a little while, last time I played it was at the NYE Walter Productions Block party. 4.) If you could produce a track with anyone right now who would it be? I’m not producing right now, but one day I’d love to collaborate with Sacha Robotti. 5.) What advice would you give to an aspiring DJ? Be grateful. Be patient. While DJing is a fun thing, it’s not always a fun thing. It’s a lot of work, like anything in life. There are lessons you learn along the way that can only come with experience. Sometimes hard lessons are the best ones. Practice, practice, practice. Put yourself out there, go to shows, support your scene, respect your scene and those that came before you. Make time for yourself. Don’t be a dick. 6.) If you could choose any venue or location to perform at where would it be? I’ll go lofty here, Woogie stage at LiB. 7.) What animal best describes you? Is a gummy bear an animal? 8.) Name one thing you do aside from music that keeps you sane? That would imply that I’m insane lol! I play a lot of video games. Smoke weed. I like to think I’m a pretty good at handling the crazy times. I take deep breathes and remind myself it will all be OK. 5.24.18

The annual Dirtybird Campout has become a major event on the West Coast festival circuit, by presenting every shade of the label’s beloved sound—from house and techno to bass and hip-hop—and combining it adult updates on good old-fashioned summer camp activities (sexy musical chairs, anyone?). DB boss Claude VonStroke sat down with the Rave Curious Podcast to reveal a couple of surprises he has in store for this year’s gathering. He also offers up advice on how to make it as a musical entrepreneur and explains the back and forth it took him to arrive at his destination as one of America’s most successful DJ-producers.

They never intended to start a festival — they were just trying to have some fun and find outlets for their art. Zusammen bilden sie ein DJ/Produzenten Duo, dass mittlerweile globale Bekanntheit genießt. That’s the lesson we get today from Dirtybird Records chief Claude VonStroke. He’s a DJ, producer, label boss, and the leader of a tribe that trusts him to provide a full-service entertainment experience that includes events and merchandise. The Dirtybird BBQ daylong cookout with DJs have become a favorite of fans around the country, and last year’s Dirtybird Campout took things up several notches — a weekend of grown-up summer camp activities in addition to music from Dirtybird DJs and friends. We’re talking tug-o-war and kayak races. Josh stopped by the Dirtybird LA headquarters to learn the secrets to building a brand with such a devoted following, directly from CVS. First, he never gave up. He failed multiple times along the way — as a rapper, a drum & bass DJ, in movie production — and bounced back each time, refining his vision and renewing his spirit. Things finally clicked when he launched the label a decade ago. He also gives us some lessons in staying close to fins. He gives them exclusive access to him and his creations.
