For the Thirteenth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories I'm  Join by guest Doc Martin  representing stories from San Francisco & Los AngelesWe discuss a range of topics including his formative musical experiences in San Francisco, the Los Angeles scene in the early 90's and various parties and residencies held in those years, as well as the evolution of his DJ, and music production career over the years, and much more.A product of the 80's San Francisco dance music boom, DJ/Producer Doc Martin has been creating innovative, high-energy electronic music for nearly three decades. Once a mainstay on the Pacific Northwest scene, he has gone on to perform everywhere from Ibiza to Tokyo, London and beyond, creating an enduring body of work in the process. Now, as he enters a new phase of his career, Doc shows no signs of slowing down, as he continues to evolve, revealing new sides of his artistry as he releases the most compelling music of his career.  Doc Martin's choice to pursue a career in music was an obvious one, given the musical family he grew up in. Most notably, his mother sang with Bay Area icons Jefferson Starship.Doc, however, was more interested in absorbing the various electronic subcultures that were emerging around the country. Endless hours spent in SF's indie record stores armed him with an expertise in everything from acid house to techno, as he developed the genre bending style that would come to define his career.  Within a few years of his first performance, Doc was selling out shows across his hometown, and began setting his sights on bigger things. In the early 90's, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he quickly integrated himself into the city's thriving rave scene. Not long after, his profile had risen enough for him to be invited to Europe to play at some of the continent's most iconic clubs and parties, including Fabric(Residency), Circoloco, The Rex, Panorama Bar, and Sunwaves to name a few,. In the ensuing decades, he became a favorite amongst audiences from New York to London, performing regularly at clubs including Output, Coachella, The Roxy, Twilo, City Fox, Space, Desert Hearts, Movement, and Lightning in a bottle After three decades of bringing people together with music, Doc Martin's passion and drive remain as strong as ever. He maintains a steady schedule of performances across the globe while continuing to release new tracks regularly. As the rare artist to achieve the status of elder-statesman, he has left a lasting legacy in electronic music, a legacy which he continues to add to every day. Also played with James Brown/Grace Jones/Tour Dj for Deee-lite,Support the show

In the fifth episode of our Set in the 1950s cycle, we discuss the 1980s hidden gem Desert Hearts and the highly lauded Diner.Special Guest: Friend and frequent guest, Molly, who led us both to the existential oasis that is Desert HeartsWe often try to choose two films that create a discourse between them, but here I think it is safe to say both films are talking past each other. Desert Hearts was an impossible film that was made through sheer will and determination. Donna Deitch raised 1.5 million to make the film mostly via individual stock sales to investors. Unheard of back then and today. The film itself exudes that deep poetic desire. Diner, on the other hand, feels ramshackle and blase. Despite its high stature amongst film critics, the movie plays like a playboy who has had one too many, slipping and sliding through life as if no consequence could cut the wrong way. These two films are about the same decade, but they are about completely different worlds.Note: This podcast was recorded and produced during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of writers and actors currently on strike, Asteroid City and The Fabelmans would not exist. Support the artists who make the art you love.

Happy Pride month, romantics! Your host Manish (@vertigay314) celebrates with guest Priyanka Bose (@mspriyankabose) with their pick, the seminal lesbian romance DESERT HEARTS, directed by Donna Deitch. The two talk about the lovely filmmaking, thoughtful themes, and strong performances of this influential queer classic. Starring Helen Shaver and Patricia Charbonneau, the 1985 indie film was the first feature film with a positive lesbian storyline which is wild to think about! It's greatly entertaining, wistful, romantic, sexy, and quite fresh to this day!

Our queer asses were caught off guard by this movie! Apparently as essential to Sapphic culture as "The Dinah", neither of us had even heard of this film before scheduling it for this month. Pull out your hat pins and loosen up because it's time for another installment of Cinema Very Gay! Desert Hearts (or, "Not Another Lesbian On This Ranch") is a seminal piece of lesbian cinema, and for many good reasons. The film was directed by Donna Deitch in 1986 and stars Helen Shaver as Vivian, a stuffy literature professor at Columbia who is in the process of divorcing her unseen husband. To expedite the process, she establishes residency in Reno by staying on a "ranch" run by Frances (Audra Lindley). As in any good lesbian period piece, a woman can't run into the wilderness without finding romantic entanglements, as Helen is unexpectedly seduced by the confident and carefree Cay, played by Patricia Charbonneau. Though there are some familiar beats to the script, the movie is touchingly directed and does an incredible job at showing the complexities of Helen and Cay's romance, as well as its impacts on those around them. Why does Frances care so much that Cay might find love? Is this the dustiest lesbian movie ever made? Is Kevin actually in love with Patricia Charbonneau? This and more on this week's episode! And then an entry in our miniseries on Criterion's LGBTQ+ shorts collection, but we aren't over the moon about this one. Jake and Kevin watched the short film Call Your Father (dir. Jordan Firstman, 2016), which follows a disastrous first date between men from different generations. There's not much reason for the date to have continued as long as it did, but there is a bit of sit-com humor to appreciate.

Happy to release a new mix today. This one is an hour clip from a longer recording posted on my Patreon page. When people ask what's my favorite place (outside Burning Man) to DJ, The Bow in Buenos Aires is always in my top 3. Argentinians have a passion for music that I haven't seen anywhere else in the world (and really a passion for just about everything). Most track breakdowns are met with huge cheers, and even when the night ends, the crowd refuses to go home as they hang around after 6am demanding more music. It's really a DJ's dream. Another thing I love about The Bow is that it's a 3000 person club, but the DJ booth is pretty low to the ground and within arm's reach of the audience. The club has the perfect blend of energy and intimacy that holds a dear place in my heart. This is a recording from my 2017 set at The Bow. Once this pandemic ends, I desperately hope to play there again. It's a bit on the driving side, but takes a couple turns towards the deeper side to balance it out. Hope you enjoy!
