Ep 64: Calming the Bear: A Guide to Easing Your Pain w/ Jason Therrien DPT

The Chronic Illness Therapist

Chronic pain can feel like a raging bear inside you. It's loud, scary, and all-consuming. But what if there was a way to calm the bear and find some peace? In this conversation, Jason Therrien and Destiny Winters explore the concept of pain as a complex experience, influenced by physical, emotional, and psychological factors.  Jason is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Certified Therapeutic Pain Specialist and Certified Health and Well-being Coach, and Destiny Winters is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. They discuss a different approach to chronic pain management – moving away from the traditional "find-and-fix" mentality and instead, highlight the importance of understanding your pain, rather than just getting rid of it without real awareness first. __________________________________________________ CONNECT: ***If you like any of The Chronic Illness Therapist episodes, please leave a review! Reviews tell the app, “hey, people like this! We've been very lucky to have Pat L'Huillier feature as a regular contributor in our Patreon this season.  Pat is a qualified Physiotherapist, having studied a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) at Monash University, and also a qualified strength & conditioning coach. Pat has been working as a physiotherapist for four years now and has been lucky enough to have mentors that have had experience in the AFL industry. He currently works at a sports clinic called Base Physio + Performance in Highett in the Bayside area in Victoria. And is the Head Physiotherapist at Beaumaris Soccer Club in the VPL2 (formerly NPL3). This audio is part of a broader discussion on knee injuries in the AFL and talks to the type of injury Sam Draper has currently, and what typical surgery and rehab looks like. Disclaimer: Everything we discuss in this segment is general, and it is likely things will differ from what is happening down at The Hangar. It's designed to be educational, injury timelines and rehabilitation specifics can vary a lot based on the exact structures involved, a player's past medical history and in top-level sport it is often influenced by external factors such as the time of the year (for example Round 1 vs Finals) or the importance of the player to a team's success. Amy Toth is a physical therapist turned chronic pain specialist with over 20 years of experience. She helps individuals recover from chronic pain by regulating and reprogramming their nervous system. In this conversation, Amy discusses the challenges of treating chronic pain, the role of the nervous system in pain perception, and the importance of building trust in your body's signals. She emphasizes the need to understand that pain does not always indicate tissue damage and that the brain can become overprotective. Amy also highlights the importance of mindfulness and self-awareness in managing chronic pain. The conversation explores the concept of persistent pain and its treatment. Amy and Destiny discuss the importance of listening to one's body and the growing interest in interoception. They also get into the use of imagery and visualization in pain reprocessing and retraining the brain. This conversation emphasizes the need for compassion, understanding, and personalized approaches in treating persistent pain. __________________________________________________ CONNECT: ***If you like any of The Chronic Illness Therapist episodes, please leave a review! Reviews tell the app, “hey, people like this! Lindsay Voorhees is an occupational therapist, wellness coach, and mindful movement guide who helps people discover ways to thrive while living with chronic and complex health conditions. She worked for several years in hospital-based Occupational therapy settings, from an inpatient spinal cord injury unit to acute care and outpatient neurologic rehab. After witnessing the gaps and limitations within the healthcare system, she shifted her work from these more medicalized settings into a private practice better suited for instilling wellness and learning to thrive instead of just survive. Lindsay works with clients navigating chronic or complex health challenges, including multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, autoimmunity, long COVID, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, cancer recovery, endometriosis, and more. This extra credit episode dives deeper into the science of smoke. We discuss some chemical changes that occur during the smoking process as well as discuss the major differences between smoking, dry herb vaping, and concentrate vaping. All of these cannabis consumption methods have one thing in common and that is heat. Different levels of heat introduced to the products will result in changes to the chemistry that is entering your body! Not everyone prefers the feeling of smoking, and we encourage all users to explore different consumption methods to see what works best for you. As always, thanks for listening! If you want to try our hemp smoke extract products, which have this changed chemistry, find them at ProfoundNaturals.com.
