1.35 million applicants received a military entrance physical from 2016 to 2020, and about 15% of them received an initial disqualification. More than half of these disqualified applicants sought a waiver, and they were more likely than not to get approved. This whole system can be frustrating and opaque, so in this episode we dive into the medical standards and waiver process with a guest who was deeply involved. Dr. Christopher D. Meyering is a board-certified Primary Care Sports Medicine physician. He attended medical school at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, Midwestern University and subsequently completed his Family Medicine internship and residency training at DeWitt Army Community Hospital at Fort Belvoir, VA. Following a 2-year assignment in Germany, he completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Tri-Service Primary Care Fellowship at Fort Belvoir, VA. He is certified by the American Board of Family Physicians with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine, and he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Meyering retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years of Service which included 3 combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as a Battalion Surgeon for Infantry, Armor, and Field Artillery units. Several key positions during his career were assignments as the Command Surgeon for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command which oversees all recruiting and training for the entire U.S. Army; the Command Surgeon for the U.S. Army Recruiting Command which made him the medical waiver authority for the Army; and the Division Surgeon for the 1st Cavalry Division. Dr. Meyering was the Chief Medical Officer for the 2022 and 2024 DoD Warrior Games held in Orlando, FL. Additionally he was the co-medical lead for the 2021 Invictus Games held in The Hague, The Netherlands and for the 2023 Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany. He is currently the Chief Medical Officer for all upcoming DoD Warrior Games and is the Medical Lead for Team U.S. at the 2025 Invictus Games in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada. He is the author of multiple peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and published abstracts, and he has presented at international and national conferences and events. He was previously the assistant team physician for George Mason University and covered all collegiate sports. He volunteered medical services at multiple levels and events to include the Marine Corps marathon, the Army 10 miler, the Augusta Half Iron Man Triathlon, All Army Wheelchair basketball, USA National and Golden Gloves Boxing events, Army combatives tournaments, professional fast pitch softball, and Special Olympics. We reference a lot of data from this AMSARA report "Accession Medical Standards Analysis and Research Activity"Some other relevant reporting on the issue includes this piece from The War Horse and this discussion of recent changes from AUSACOL (R) Meyering told a story about national media attention on some of his work, and you can find that coverage here

Originally Published April 11, 2022. Today, we are honored to have Rear Admiral Kyle Cozad as our special guest. A graduate of the US Naval Academy in 1985, Kyle's distinguished 35-year career in the Navy was centered around aviation training and operations, commanding at various levels and serving as an instructor pilot, including an exchange tour with the Canadian Air Force. However, in 2018, a tragic accident left Kyle paralyzed from the waist down. Despite the prognosis that he'd never stand again, Kyle's determination, resilience, and spirit led him to defy the odds. Through intensive therapy and sheer will, he regained some mobility and continued to serve on active duty, becoming an inspiration to many. Join us as he shares his incredible journey of overcoming adversity, finding new purpose, and demonstrating that it's not what happens to you, but what you do with what happens, that defines your life.   Rear Admiral Kyle Cozad (retired) is a 35-year Navy veteran, who served at the highest levels of the US Navy.  After a catastrophic spinal cord injury while still on active duty, Cozad confronted the fight of his life – defying medical prognoses that he'd never walk again, only to return to full duty (in a wheelchair) for his final 30-months of service.  Since his accident, Cozad has participated in the DoD Warrior Games, was recognized as a Department of Defense Top Employees with Disabilities in 2020 and has become an advocate for disability awareness and personal resilience in his book, “RELENTLESS POSITIVITY.”   Most recently, Cozad joined the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation as the President and Chief Executive Officer in October 2020 where he resides today in Pensacola, Florida – affectionately known as “the Cradle of Naval Aviation.”   Social Media: Linkedin: linkedin.com/in/kyle-cozad-80b038101   Instagram: Instagram.com/rearadmiralkc    Thanks for listening to the show! It is a healthy, low-impact movement that we can continue throughout life.Aside from being a lot of fun, swimming is a great way to enhance health and wellness holistically. The mental health benefits of swimming include a release of endorphins and serotonin, an active form of mindfulness, lower stress and anxiety, and an overall sense of increased happiness. I met Rick Devericks at the Department of Defense Warriors Games in Chicago in the summer of 2017. We became fast friends and share our love of country, our Veterans and the Lord. His friendship has been one of many that I am so thankful for and I look forward to sharing some time on the archery range with him some day soon.Until them, we will have to catch up over the phone and on this podcast. His second time joining us, Devericks recently returned from the DOD Warrior Games in his role as the archery coach for Team SOCOM. I won't spoil the party but let's just say that his prowess with the bow and arrow has spread quickly to those he's been instructing and good things have followed.Archery is a life long passion for the Rick and he gets range time whenever he can to battle his own PTSD and knows firsthand the value of giving that same gift to others who are struggling. His youngest son has also picked up the bow and time with him is far and away the joy of Deverick's life.Residing in North Carolina, we hope to some day have an event closer to his home turf that will allow us to see each other in person more often. While plans are still in the works, when that day does come, I know that Rick will be there in the trenches with us doing what he does best, continuing to serve his community through his love of archery and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.Thank you for your service Rick! Transcript: http://bit.ly/3ZM5qkSChristy Kinsey (maiden name Wise) was born in Reno, Nevada and grew up with a twin sister and younger brother, spending all their time skiing and playing sports. For college, Christy attended the United States Air Force Academy where she ski raced and played club softball. In 2009, she commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force and in 2011, she received her pilot wings to fly the HC-130. She spent the next couple years stationed in Valdosta Georgia, and deployed to Afghanistan and Italy. On April 11, 2015, Christy was visiting her friends for the weekend in Destin, Florida and she was on her paddleboard in a protected cove behind her friends' house when she was struck by a hit-and-run boat driver. Although Christy's life was miraculously saved, she lost her right leg above the knee in the incident.Christy was determined not to let this change her life so she fought to stay in the Air Force and continue flying. She became the sixth Air Force pilot (and first female) to return to flying after an amputation. Along the way, she won 11 medals in the DOD Warrior Games and competed in two international Invictus Games. Humbled by all the support she received since the first night in the hospital, Christy and her twin sister Jessica started a non-profit, One Leg Up On Life, that provides prosthetic limbs to patients in Haiti.Christy's courage and determination to continue her Air Force career while also using her experience to help others exemplifies tremendous resiliency and strength of character.Learn more about the One Leg Up On Life Foundation:http://www.oneleguponlife.org/Connect with the Rocky Mountain ADA Center at https://rockymountainada.org/ or find us on social media.
