CCCT sat down with Michelle Horn, VP of Communications with the Fisher House Foundation & Joe Jena, Director, Talent Acquisition with 84 Lumber on "Hire A US Veteran Day".July 25th, 2024, is "National Hire a Veteran Day" (#HireAVeteranDay), a reminder to employers to consider hiring veterans to fill their open positions.Every day, hundreds of our military personnel leave the service in search of civilian employment. However, veterans entering the workforce after military service face a variety of challenges, and vying for civilian positions can be difficult for transitioning veterans. Most military personnel who went straight from high school or college into the military have never applied for a job before. What's worse is the fact that these men and women are having difficulty translating their broad military experiences into private sector employment skills.DID YOU KNOW?:According to the Pew Research Center, there are approximately 18 million veterans in the U.S. today, representing about 6% of the adult population.Roughly 200,000 military members retire or separate from the armed services every year, according to the Department of Labor.A recent survey of 1,000 U.S. military veterans conducted by OnePoll on behalf of the VFW found that finding a job topped the list of challenges, with 33 percent of respondents calling it their biggest hurdle.According to a poll from Employ Inc., 81% of hiring professionals are having trouble filling jobs. Season 4 Episode 8 Fisher House Foundation On this week's episode of Ruck Up Buttercup we had the opportunity to speak with Mary Considine, the Chief of Staff for the Fisher House Foundation. She has been with this amazing organization for 20 years and has seen them grow from only a handful of houses to being on their journey to building the 100th house hopefully later this year. Fisher House Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 that provides a home away from home for military families when they are having a medical situation. Located next to hospitals and Va's nationwide, they provide a free place to allow families to visit, and support each other during times of medical need. They also provide support to Gold Star families during that process. On top of their many houses, they also have other programs that help pay for flights, as well as hotels as the need may arise. As well as some really great scholarships for students as well as spouses to help support the future of families in the military community. If you find yourself with a little free time and are interested in serving others in the military community there are many volunteer opportunities you can look into at a Fisher House near you. Becky Sansbury, M.Div., has spent thirty-five years focused on crisis care, working with individuals and organizations. Serving as head chaplain for Transitions LifeCare, a hospice and palliative care agency, she provided hands-on spiritual and emotional support for patients, families and colleagues. Simultaneously, she learned principles of dealing with crisis from an organizational perspective due to the intense team interaction required in hospice work. Becky followed that career with leadership in The Avadon Group, specialists in career crisis, working with displaced professionals during the 2008 recession. Distilling underlying principles of crisis response, stabilization, and resilience within multiple areas of disruption, Becky developed the After the Shock™ process. She speaks to national organizations, such as Blueprint Medicines, Fisher House Foundation, and Ronald McDonald House Charities®, providing them with fresh perspectives and new tools to supplement their work with individuals and organizations in crisis. In addition, Becky consults directly with medical and corporate leaders when personal or professional crisis disrupts their work. Becky's book, After The Shock: Getting You Back On The Road To Resilience When Crisis Hits You Head On, was published in paperback and digital versions in 2015. Shortly after the book was published, Becky needed to use her own process. For five years Becky provided in-home, solo caregiving for both her elderly mother and adult daughter. That experience reinforced Becky's dual conviction that regardless of the diagnosis, all good care is palliative and the greater the shock, the more crucial the need for comfort. Her mantra has become, palliative care for all people all the time. www.BeckySansbury.com
