A seemingly innocuous bill approving a series of new distinctive license plates sparked debate last week in the Kansas Legislature. That’s because one plate included would be based on the Gadsden flag — a design critics say has ties to slavery. Cristopher Gadsden designed the yellow Revolutionary War symbol bearing a hissing snake and the words “Don’t Tread on Me.” He was a merchant and slave owner in South Carolina who had a wharf built bearing his name in Charleston, where an estimated 100,000 enslaved Africans landed in the United States. The bill passed the House and Senate and is now headed to Gov. Laura Kelly for review.

This last installment of “Pride” is talking about submission, and when it is right, and not right, to obey other people. This is a controversial topic, I understand, so please do me and yourself a favor and don't listen to this one unless you are going to listen to the whole thing, because context is key in everything I am about to talk about! There is a reward for godly obedience.

"G" is for the Gadsden Flag, a bright yellow banner with a gray, coiled rattlesnake at its center with the words "Don't Tread on Me" inscribed beneath. Although there had been similar flags since the French and Indian War, this particular flag can be traced to Christopher Gadsden, one of the state's delegates to the First Continental Congress. The rattlesnake in a variety of poses was used to reflect colonial anger and defiance. As a member of the congressional committee on Naval Affairs, Gadsden had presented the banner to the commander-in-chief of the Continental Navy who used it as the country's first naval jack. Gadsden also presented “an elegant standard” to the state's Provincial Congress in February 1776. The Gadsden flag is a visible symbol of South Carolina’s long tradition of defying external authority.

As demonstrations protesting stay-at-home orders pop up across the country, residents of Seal Beach, California, gathered at the Seal Beach pier on May 2nd to protest the closure of beaches in the state. Governor Gavin Newsom shut down beaches in Orange County after shores were packed with people looking to beat the heat. Many carry American flags as well as "Don't Tread on Me" banners. Some young protesters have their messages on boogie boards, such as “Gavin Don’t Surf” and “Open the Beach - It’s my Playground.” The pier is right next to a police station, and local law enforcement was present to ensure safety. Sergeant Nick Nicholas, the spokesperson for the Seal Beach Police Department says that they want people to express their views while staying safe. While the protest remained peaceful, attendees did push past caution tape to move onto the beach. Seal Beach police followed on beach vehicles and returned demonstrators to the street. Protesters then took a walk down Main Street, flags, signs, and surfboards in tow. Hannah Harn reported from Seal Beach, CA.

Politics and Money, two issues in your face on the news. Not something I feel qualified to comment on, however since you and I will have to become involved, we may at least raise a few questions. Where are the answers? and Who is to present them? Are we so far from solving issues that it is more comfortable to buy or rather spend our way out of debt? I prefer to study scripture and will do so, but scripture does not shy away from finances either. And for politics, both Moses and Paul got involved as did many others listed in the bible. One more question, is it possible that our treatment of Israel has anything to do with the current situation? Only G-d has that answer and we seek to serve HIM.  Be Blessed Rebbe T.
