It was that love of basketball that would lead him to meet his best friend and business partner J.Cole. That mixtape was The Come Up. As the music started to catch fire amongst the blog scene, they named themselves Dreamville. In 2007, IB and J.Cole founded their own record label, Dreamville Records with the vision of making sure everyone felt like family.Co-Founder of Claima and Former Nike Marketer, Bimma Williams interviews leading and emerging creatives and entrepreneurs of color about how they were able to build their own tables by turning their hobbies, side hustles, and ideas into thriving small businesses. It's been over 1,000 days without a J. Cole solo project, but now the North Carolina rapper returns with his new album, The Off-Season. On Friday (May 14), Cole unleashed his first solo offering since 2018's KOD album. The Dreamville Records head honcho comes through with 12 songs including the previously released "Interlude." On the production side, Cole taps Timbaland, Boi-1da, DJ Dahi, Jake One and more. The LP has uncredited features from Lil Baby, 21 Savage and Morray on the song "My Life," which finds Morray singing a sample of Pharoahe Monch's rhymes from the 2002 track "The Life" with Styles P. Cole officially announced on May 4 that the LP would be dropping with an announcement shared to Instagram and Twitter. "My new album The Off-Season available 5/14. Just know this was years in the making," he wrote in the caption for his album artwork, which features himself standing next to an inflamed basketball hoop. The fiery court Cole is standing near could be metaphorically linked to the basketball themes the rhymer has used for past projects like The Warm Up, Friday Night Lights and The Sideline Story. Johnny Venus and Doctor Dot formed Earthgang in high school but it wasn’t until recently that their music would make it into the ears of the mainstream. Over the past 10 years, the duo has dropped 3 albums, 4 EPS, 3 mixtapes, 4 compilation projects, and countless singles. But before they signed to J.Cole’s Dreamville Records (joining rappers such as Bas and college buddy J.I.D), the two were just a couple of kids attending open mic nights and paying $35 dollars a night to perform. But we’ll walk you through their entire story in this video.
On this week’s episode, Amira Rasool is joined by Felton Brown, the vice president of creative services at Dreamville Records. They have a conversation about his journey from graphic design and advertising to the music industry, what it really means to be a creative director, communicating the vision of artists such as J. Cole and Ari Lennox, and what he finds most fulfilling about his role.
