Yes, Norway has cities that are well worth a visit — Hallo, Oslo! Hei, Bergen! God morgen, Tromsø! — but nature is right there at every moment. Where the coast of Norway meets the Norwegian Sea, there are more than 1700 fjords, stunning waterways lined with sheer rock cliffs and dotted with dramatic waterfalls, storybook villages, and friendly goats and sheep. The best way to experience the fjords? By boat, of course: a dinner cruise, catamaran, sailboat, kayak, ferry, whale watching boat, or a breathtaking ride on a fjord safari. Inland, you can meet the locals of past and present. Stop by the fascinating Viking Village to time travel to 1000 (and learn to throw an axe!) — or spend an afternoon among the bears, reindeer, wolves, lynx, and leopards at the Bjørn Parken (Bear Park). You can feed a fox! When you're ready for a meal, too, sink your teeth into Norway's national snack: the hot dog — with lingonberry jam and french-fried onions — or try the ubiquitous and one-of-a-kind brunost (brown cheese). Caramelized, savory, and surprising, it's just what you want on a cracker or waffle. And don't sleep on the smoked salmon, pickled herring, or shrimp plucked from the nearby icy waters. In this episode, we get excited about all the exhilarating, unexpected, delightful adventures Norway offers — and talk about why the Norwegian government employs financial planners and moral philosophers. Then we recommend five great books we love that took us to Norway on the page: The Bell in the Lake by Lars Mytting, Deborah Dawkin (translator) We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance by David Howarth The Hike by Lucy Clarke Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman The Sunlit Night by Rebecca Dinerstein Knight For more on the books we recommend, plus the other cool stuff we talk about, visit show notes.
Her får du nokre svar. Andre stikkord: Stavkyrkje, ragnarok, dommedag, Midgardsormen, nornene, biletvev, skriveprosess, forteljetradisjon, fantasylitteratur, villrein. Innspela i Oslo 14. februar 2024.
Her kommer digresjonene tett som hagl. Hvordan ser 2024 ut for Oslo Ess/The Dogs? God stemning!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our bookshelf episodes are the ones where we kick back and talk about the books we've been choosing for ourselves outside of our book club reading. And so join us as we get swept away by the French Revolution and Hilary Mantel's spellbinding book A PLACE OF GREATER SAFETY, consider myth and storytelling with a surprisingly feminist slant thanks to Salman Rushdie's latest novel, VICTORY CITY, see another side to New York with our guest Phil Chaffee and Chang Rae Lee's book NATIVE SPEAKER, plan an architectural tour of Norwegian Stave churches thanks to THE BELL AND THE LAKE by Lars Mytting, which Laura reports is a tale of love and drama set among a remote community in 18th-century Norway. We also catch up with Barack Obama's summer reading pick THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD MOTHERS by Jessamine Chan – with a brief aside to celebrate Kate's new-found love for Richard and Judy's book club here in the UK. Phil reports back on the FT's business book of the year, CHIP WAR by Chris Miller, which turns out to be a thumping page-turner, plus we quick fire through a stack of other books we couldn't bear not to mention. Join us as we catch up on our recent reads outside of book club, the books we're picking and choosing for ourselves. Laura enjoys The Sixteen Trees of the Somme by Lars Mytting, declaring it 'unputdownable', and a good antidote to the brilliant but rather more serious novel The Sympathiser by Viet Thanh Nguyen (her Vancouver book club's pick). We're joined by journalist Phil Chaffee who shares his recent holiday reading, The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco and My Fourth Time We Drowned by Sally Hayden. Meanwhile Kate has fallen in love with O'Caledonia by Elspeth Barker and sneaks in This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab, a YA fantasy read that proves perfect for those times when you just want to read about things that aren't real. Could the three of them form an unconventional family - and raise the baby together?Buy your copy1.) Book you recommend most frequently Honestly, probably Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels—But read out of order. I recommend that people read them in this order: Book 2, Book 3, Book 1, Book 4. Because that sort of simulates how I experience adult life, where midway through, I sort of reexamined my childhood to understand why I am how I am. Skipping book 1 in the Neapolitan novels creates a similar effect. 2.) Book which people might be surprised you love The Passage by Justin Cronin. What can I say? I like an exciting action vampire thriller! 3.) Book or writer which inspired your most recent publication Maggie Nelson’s Argonauts. I wanted to be in conversation with her. I was arguing with her book in my head before I started mine. 4.) Favourite classic Halldor Laxness’ Independent People. Nobel Prize winner, but that makes it seem stuffy. It's really weird and funny and touching. Lots of sheep. 5.) Upcoming fiction title you have recently read The Years by Annie Ernaux completely shocked me and is a style of writing that I don’t see so much in American writing, and wish I saw more of it. 6.) Upcoming non-fiction title you have recently read Norweigian Wood by Lars Mytting. A guide to chopping wood, but really so so much more. It was a best seller in Scandanavia, I think. 7.) The book you go back to The Possessed by Elif Batuman. I just love this book so much and I’m always going to it for style pointers and voice. I am such a fan and when she blurbed my book, I almost couldn’t handle it. Go to https://uk.bookshop.org/ to purchase your copies. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

“‘And this also', said Marlow suddenly, ‘has been one of the dark places of the earth.' This epigraph, taken from Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, sets the tone for Mytting's sweeping investigation of legend, superstition, and the effects of industrial and ideological change on a small, secluded village in rural Norway . . . A powerful contemporary narrative that is rooted in history.” Rachel Goldblatt, The BookBlast Diary What were your sources for the pagan, Viking and Christian folklore myths and legends referenced in The Bell in the Lake?

What is it about making and warming ourselves with woodburning flame that's so satisfying? And how can we better master the art of firemaking? Well my guest today has published a book that’s become a cult classic in Scandinavia and it’s all about wood and fire. His name is Lars Mytting and his book is "Norwegian Wood: Chopping, Stacking, and Drying Wood the Scandinavian Way." Today on the show, Lars and I discuss the pleasures of preparing wood for a fire and why firewood is an important part of man’s identity in Scandinavian countries. We go on to talk about the best kind of wood for fires, how to fell trees for firewood, how to season your wood for optimal fire building, and the best time to split wood. This is a show both philosophical and practical, and it will leave you wanting to build the best fireplace fire of your life when you’re done listening.

Grethe Melby leder samtalen.
