Dear listeners, we come to you today with a short admin update. Abigail has officially been accepted to law school and will have a busy year, to say the least. We plan to release six episodes in Season 6 - Touch by Eurythmics, 2014 Forest Hills Drive by J. Cole (submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Alinor Mezinord), and four Phone-a-Friend episodes. We may throw in some ad hoc bonus content or experiment with some different formats along the way. Long story short, our release schedule will be erratic. We will continue to re-share our backcatalog of episodes weekly on Substack, and Barry may share some essay-format brewery reviews there as well.In the meantime, we now have an extensive backcatalog of 109 episodes and numerous bonus episodes. We hope you will revisit some of your old favorites, listen to an episode you haven't heard before, or share us with a friend! We are excited for what 2026 will bring, and we hope you will come along on the ride with us.Happy New Year, and we'll see you… sometime!Up next… Touch by EurythmicsJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group
Barry and Abigail discuss Navy Blues by Sloan and sample three Canadian beers: Labatt Blue from Labatt Brewing Company, Moosehead Canadian Lager from Moosehead Breweries Limited, and Life in the Clouds from Collective Arts Brewing. The delightful can art of Life in the Clouds was designed by Joe Boyd.Navy Blues was entered into our Jukebox long ago by Paul Zawacki during our episode Bonus: A Dozen Updates (The Procession Reunion Special). He described Sloan as the Canadian Beatles, comparing One Chord to Another to the White Album (we have officially gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album!) and Navy Blues to Abbey Road.In preparation for this episode, Abigail listened through Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Love by The Beatles.Revolver is one of Barry's favorite Beatles albums. He compared the throat clear at the beginning of She Says What She Means to George Harrison's counting on Taxman, the opening track of Revolver.Barry then compared C'mon C'mon to Good Day Sunshine, also off Revolver.…He then compared Iggy & Angus to The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) by The Banana Splits.…Then, collectively, they compared Sinking Ships to Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey by Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney.Barry "complained" about the sirens in Money City Maniacs, which reminded Abigail of the sounds of cars whizzing by underlying Lonely Boy by The Black Keys.Abigail had confusion over Seems So Heavy, which by title alone seems to be a rip-off of/tribute to I Want You (She's So Heavy) by The Beatles. Later, she would compare the opening couple of notes of Suppose They Close the Door to the opening couple of notes of I Want You (She's So Heavy).Abigail shared that one of the best meals she ever ate was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from where Sloan originated. She ate sea-cuterie at Waterfront Warehouse.Barry compared the piano in Chester the Molester to the piano in Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da by The Beatles. We briefly discussed James Taylor's eponymous debut album, which was released on The Beatles' Apple Records (the first non-British artist on the label), was recorded at Trident Studios concurrently with the White Album, and features Paul McCartney and George Harrison on bass guitar and backing vocals, respectively! But Barry had part of the story backward - Something in the Way She Moves inspired the opening line of Harrison's Something, not the other way around. (Coincidentally, Taylor has said he had meant for the song to be called “I Feel Fine,” but that title had already been taken by The Beatles!) We played a little bit of the version of Carolina In My Mind that appears on this debut album - the version with members of The Beatles included. Later, Abigail mentioned that she kept hearing How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You) by James Taylor in I Wanna Thank You.Our word association around “ways to get even” from Suppose They Close the Door led us to 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover by Paul Simon and 50 Ways to Say Goodbye by Train. We should have also added Ways to Hang On by The Stick Arounds! Our next Jukebox episode will be 2014 Forest Hills Drive by J. Cole, submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Alinor Mezinord.Up next… Teenage Dream by Katy PerryJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

Our analysis of 2014 Forest Hills Drive.
Dreams are a tricky thing. Dream too big and you could be disappointed with what you get. Dream too small and you might not ever experience your own potential. Then there's the American dream, which tells you if you work hard enough, no matter who you are or where you are from, you'll attain the dream you have. J. Cole was fortunate enough to have his dream realized. With a supportive mother, who believed in his dream and bought him samplers and drum machines in his youth, he started rapping at 14 and after some time in New York as a student at St. John's University, he wound up on a Jay-Z 2009 track called "A Star Is Born." This exposure began his rocket to the top of the charts as the hot new thing, with his first two albums, "Cole World: The Sideline Story" & "Born Sinner" including features from rap legends, such as Jay-Z, Missy Eliot, 50 Cent, TLC, and Kendrick Lamar. Cole was on top of the world and his dream was now reality, but at the top of the charts, he started to realize that he still was not fulfilled. In New York, no matter how successful he continued to be, he still felt like an outsider, a transplant. For Cole, it was time to go home to Fayetteville, North Carolina, and reassess. In "2014 Forest Hills Drive," Cole lays out his emotional journey as he buys his childhood home and all the memories attached to it. He thinks about all the people that he grew up with and where their lives took them, as well as the differences in childhood and education he had being from living in a better neighborhood and going to a better school. J. Cole proved with this album that he hadn't forgotten about his roots and gave everyone in his community the hope that dreams can come true, as well as putting Fayetteville on the map. Female empowerment in music, for a long time, was a facade in the male dominated record industry. Sure you had big names like Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, and Joni Mitchell that have an ongoing legacy, but it was always an uphill struggle to be taken seriously, even for them. It wasn't until the 80s that women in music really started to break out of society's prescribed mold, adopting wild punk rock styles and living rock star lives, which used to be reserved for “the boys.” Rock music began to accept the likes of Tina Turner, Heart, Joan Jett, and Stevie Nicks and her astounding solo career. It was a definite push forward for women in the media landscape, but by 1995, and after the advent of alternative music, feminism in music needed a different approach. When you take off all the glam and glitz of the 80's, but keep its feminist edge, what do you have? The answer is Alanis Morissette. With two semi-successful albums already released on MCA Records Canada, and having done some acting before the music, Alanis was well aware of how the entertainment industry worked. Going what she had gone through as a child actor and eventual singer, Alanis knew better than anyone that women weren't yet being treated with the dignity they deserved, herself being involved in a predatory relationship with a Canadian record exec (referenced in the song “Hands Clean”) and a questionable relationship with Dave Coulier (infamously referenced in the song “You Oughta Know”). After all of her experiences and diminishing interest in her pop past, she was ready to show the world how fed up she was—with the sexism, with the predatory practices, and with the whole pop aesthetic. With “Jagged Little Pill,” Alanis, and cowriter/producer Glen Ballard, rewrote the rules on what was acceptable for a female pop/rock artist in the record industry, opening the door for the next generation of strong female pop/rock artists like Shakira, Michelle Branch, and Avril Lavigne. Join Brad, Dave, Jon, and a very special guest and badass feminist, Brad's mother, Pamela Siemens, as they break down the alt 90s angst! COMING UP: (08-31-20) J.
