In the episode "Dogmas of Science Part 2: Gene-centered Inheritance or Sheldrake's Morphic Resonance? (S2, E16)" I share Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) that are analyzing genomes of the bipolars and the "genetically depressed." I ask the question, where is this science taking us if one doesn't subscribe to the materialist worldview?  This research only supports the theory that the mind is inside the brain. Their evolutionary material transference through genes does not reflect our larger reality or our free will, and only believes in predetermination.  Scientist Rupert Sheldrake in his book The Science Delusion, presents an argument of how inheritance is transferred in another way beyond that of just genes.  His hypothesis of morphic resonance  proposes that nature forms habits that evolve, and since this is not material and instead non-local, this allows for another type of inheritance. M., Legendre, P., Czarnecki, A. Abstract: A remarkable feature of the developing central nervous system is the generation of spontaneous network activity (SNA) at the onset of synaptogenesis. In the spinal cord (SC) of the mouse embryo, SNA occurs around the 12th embryonic day (E12.5) and involves a recurrent functional loop between motoneurons (MNs) and GABAergic interneurons. We previously showed that Renshaw cells (V1R), which constitute a functionally homogeneous population in the adult, are the first neurons enriched with GABA in the mouse embryonic lumbar SC. V1R make synaptic-like contacts with MNs and likely participate to the genesis of SNA. However, how electrophysiological intrinsic properties of V1R evolve during early development remains poorly understood. Here, using patch-clamp recordings, cluster analysis and biophysical modeling, we analyzed the mechanisms underlying the firing patterns of V1R between E11.5 and E16.5. This developmental period covers the initial phase of development of SC activity (E11.5-E14.5) when SNA is present, and a pivotal period (E14.5-E16.5) when locomotor-like activity emerges. We discovered that V1R can be subdivided into different clusters before E13.5 and that many cells are capable of sustaining repetitive firing or plateau potentials. These V1R then lose transiently this firing ability, which is later recovered at E16.5. This is in contrast to the classical developmental scheme, i.e. an increase of firing capability with time. Combining pharmacology and computational modeling, we showed that the firing patterns of embryonic V1R rely on the synergy between two opposing voltage-dependent currents, namely the slowly inactivating persistent sodium current and the delayed rectifier potassium current. These two currents are responsible for the repetitive firing of action potentials in a vast majority of neurons. Such a synergy is sufficient to explain the clustering of embryonic V1R and determines the developmental trajectories of the electrical phenotype. Taken together our findings reveal a simple mechanism that is at the core of the heterogeneity of firing patterns. To celebrate the launch of EYESORE Issue 3, we took over The Silver Building in E16 on October 7 for a day and nights worth of activity. Prior to the big day, we sat down in the space to speak with Nick Hartwright, the man currently responsible for developing the former derelict factory into London's next major arts hub. Project, Nick has made a career out of finding disused spaces across the city, working closely with the GLA and other authorities in transforming them into thriving spots anchored strongly in the community they are located in. Insights into the developmental processes during which the brain forms from the neuroepithelium may provide a deeper understanding how the brain works. The Rho family of small GTPases is known for its many cell biological functions such as regulation of the cytoskeleton, gene expression, cell migration, adhesion, cell polarity and the cell cycle. All of these functions are of importance during the formation of the cerebral neocortex, which consists of the generation of its different cell types, their migration to their destination and their maturation to a functional network. These roles have been mostly established in vitro using dominant negative or constitutively active constructs. Since these approaches are often not entirely specific for single pathways, this work used the Cre/loxP system to genetically delete an individual member of the Rho family, RhoA, to examine its role following a loss-of-function approach. Specifically, we examined a mouse line where part of the RhoA gene has been deleted by means of the Emx1::Cre mouse line. This idea is based on previous experiences with the deletion of Cdc42 in the developing neocortex, which leads to a loss of apical progenitors. RhoA often works as a functional antagonist to Cdc42. Using immunofluorescence, we could detect a loss of RhoA at embryonic day 12 (E12) in Emx1::Cre-positive offspring carrying the floxed RhoA-construct in both alleles (cKO).
