Six years after the runaway phenomenon that was Gremlins, director Joe Dante (The Howling, Innerspace) finally delivered a sequel....only this time, he brought the action to New York City where Billy (Zach Galligan) and Kate (Phoebe Cates) now live. They both have jobs working at the famous Clamp Tower for the Clamp Corporation which is run by famous billionaire Daniel Clamp (John Glover).....and life is pretty dull overall. Until one day, they're sent an old friend at the tower.....more than an old friend, it's Gizmo the adorable Mogwai from the first film! :) Will they follow "The RULES" this time? :o Host & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Cooper and Nolan are putting it out there for all the world to see this week when they meet THE INVISIBLE MANIAC! This VERY low budget 90s horror/comedy leans as hard as possible into gratuitous nudity, which it turns out is just one of many reasons the guys ended up getting on board with it. Throw in some hilariously awful special effects, questionable performances from actors who are clearly too old for their roles, and a plot that's ridiculous in all the right ways, and you've discovered the formula for a good time. So take off your lab coat and hit the showers; this episode (featuring a beer from Supply & Demand Beer and Pizza) is one you'll definitely be glad didn't stay invisible!
We say farewell to Farrow and Allen (for now, although we'll probably encounter them individually on the podcast again) with this final episode on their cinematic collaboration, covering Alice (1990), Shadows and Fog (1991), and one of their very best, the ill-fated Husbands and Wives (1992). In the first two, two more Allen characters struggle to live the good life in what couldn't be more different settings, and then we join Allen in meditating on all of the different ways that romantic relationships attempting to function at a high level can go wrong. Then, on Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we briefly glance at Siodmak's 1944 Phantom Lady, covered by us before, and Ray's In a Lonely Place (1950), to be covered in detail very soon as part of our Gloria Grahame series. In times of great upheaval, it helps to sit and do some self-reflection… unless of course that self-reflection is in a cursed mirror. That's a big no no. To illustrate what kind of mayhem this leads to, we're watching 1990's lost gem MIRROR MIRROR. It's got Temu Lydia Deetz in it so you know this thing is a blast! In this episode, it's finally time for Dylan to watch the 1990 crime drama from the Coen Brothers, "Miller's Crossing", starring Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney, and John Turturro! Listen now!
Over the past 30 years, American cities have seen crime rates surge and fall — sometimes dramatically. No city illustrates this swing better than New York, where murders dropped from more than 2,200 in 1990 to under 300 by 2017. In this episode of the Policing Matters podcast, former Baltimore cop and current John Jay professor Peter Moskos discusses the story behind that decline, as told in his new book, “Back from the Brink: Inside the NYPD and New York's Extraordinary 1990s Crime Drop.” The conversation covers leadership, accountability, crime data and the lessons law enforcement leaders can apply today. Host Jim Dudley interviews Moskos about the origins and impact of New York's historic crime decline in the 1990s. Moskos explains how NYPD's shift in focus — from scandal and corruption control to crime prevention — was spurred by leaders like Bill Bratton and Jack Maple, along with innovations like CompStat. He outlines how data, accountability and political will converged to create a seismic shift in policing outcomes, and why understanding this history matters for today's police leaders. This week's throwback VHS gem comes courtesy of long-time Patreon supporter Gareth—who clearly knows his way around a good roundhouse kick. Gareth has chosen China O'Brien 2 (1990), the Cynthia Rothrock martial arts sequel that kicks just as hard as the first. With small-town justice, explosive action, and some delightfully dated hairdos, this one's a real time capsule of straight to video action cinema.China O'Brien 2 was filmed back-to-back with the original film in 1988, though it wasn't released until 1990. Like its predecessor, it was produced by Golden Harvest, the Hong Kong studio famous for bringing Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan to global audiences. The movie was once again helmed by Robert Clouse, best known for directing Enter the Dragon, and featured the same lead trio, Cynthia Rothrock, Richard Norton, and Keith Cooke, reprising their roles. This continuity gave the sequel a consistent tone and feel, even if it lacked the novelty of the first installment.Rothrock, already a martial arts icon by this point, was one of the few female action stars headlining films in the video rental boom era. Though the sequel received minimal theatrical attention, it found its true home on VHS shelves around the world. It built a cult following among action fans who appreciated the straightforward storytelling, bone-crunching fights, and Rothrock's no-nonsense screen presence. While not revolutionary, China O'Brien 2 holds a special place as a symbol of the era's scrappy, low-budget action enthusiasm. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a town where justice wears a sheriff's badge and fights with her fists, China O'Brien thought the worst was behind her. But when an old enemy breaks out of prison and comes gunning for revenge, she'll need more than martial arts to keep the peace. With allies by her side and danger around every dusty corner, she'll deliver justice, one flying kick at a time. This summer… vengeance has a new opponent… China O'Brien 2.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Explore Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) with us and see how these seemingly silly characters connect deeply the story of Christ, His disciples, and the conflict between God's family and Satan. With the help of our pal Scott Clevenger (from The Slumgullion podcast) we dish all about four stylish 90's action/adventure films that were looking to the pulps of the 30s for inspiration! These movies featured heroic characters from a bygone era of pulp magazines, comic strips and serials! We'll each present one of the four films while diving into their pulpy origins. By the time these films were made, these characters weren't as well known as in their heyday, but there would never have been a Batman without The Shadow, The Phantom or Dick Tracy! ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen) • Coopster Gold (join) • Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile
Today we are headed back to the early 1990s to discuss the state of pro wrestling at the time. While business was just about as bad as it could get, there were still plenty of great storylines and personalities at the time. The early 1990s saw Hulk Hogan gone from WWF and the rise of Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and others. WCW was a complete corporate mess but there was still great wrestling with Sting, Big Van Vader, Ron Simmons, Cactus Jack, and more! I also look at the PWI Top 500 during the early 1990s both the top and bottom of the rankings! The extended Patreon version of the show is here - https://www.patreon.com/posts/131680918

On Episode 135 of The Film '89 Podcast, Neil, Skye and Steve celebrate the 35th anniversary of yet another Arnold Schwarzenegger film, this time it's the 1990 action-science-fiction classic, Total Recall. Following on from the recent success of our Commando episode, the guys are once again giving their in-depth analysis of a film starring one of the Film '89 team's favourite movie stars, but this time, they're also discussing one of their favourite directors, Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven. They discuss the source short story by Philip K. Dick upon which Total Recall is based as well as the making of this big budget special effects spectacle - at the time, one of the most expensive films ever made. The guys also dissect the film's fiendishly complex plot and the many themes, layers and socio-political commentary that Verhoeven weaves into the film. Featuring a superb supporting cast including Sharon Stone, Rachel Ticotin, Michael Ironside and Ronny Cox, an incredible score by Jerry Goldsmith and incredible special effects that hold up 35 years on, Total Recall is a timeless classic and is given the usual Film '89 treatment.

God forbid we actually expect a story about mermaids in a film called Mermaids. I suppose Christina Ricci does … Continue reading "455: Mermaids [1990] Movie Discussion"

Room service, Down to Watchers! This week, Dan and Raul watched 90s neo crime noir King of New York! Abel Ferrara brings art house sensibilities and evocative imagery to the realm of gang hits at drug parties in dilapidated dens and high society hotels. The film is full of familiar faces, with Christopher Walken and "Larry" Fishburne in particular bringing a wild energy to a moody tone poem of a film. The vibes here are enough to make for a fun chat, whether you think this is an artsy outlier or a canon crime thriller, so don't not listen to this podcast. It's a stupid thing to do...

Zo visits New York City to bare witness to some of the shadier parts of the city: the behind the scenes speakeasies that go unnoticed by common bar flies, the underground clubs where you got to know somebody who knows somebody to get into, and the shadiest parts of all: the secret world of the bare knuckles nock down drag out street fight clubs that nobody talks about. Zo sees an amazing fighter in one of these fights. Seemingly out of nowhere and speaking a strange accent, this mystery man makes short work of some of the toughest brawlers in the Big Apple. At the end of the fight a man proclaims, "Lionheart! King of the Jungle!" Lionheart, it seems, is the guy that you'd want to put your money on. Any other wager would be the wrong bet.Episode Segments00:05:04 Opening Credits for Lionheart starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Harrison Page, and Deborah Rennard00:13:45 Favorite Parts of the 1990 film: Lionheart00:48:24 Trivia from the Martial Arts Action Movie Lionheart00:51:51 Critics' Thoughts on Sheldon Lettich's Lionheart Please leave a comment, suggestion or question on our social media: Back Look Cinema: The Podcast Links:Website: www.backlookcinema.comEmail: fanmail@backlookcinema.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@backlookcinemaTwitter: https://twitter.com/backlookcinemaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/BackLookCinemaInstagram: https://instagram.com/backlookcinemaThreads: https://www.threads.net/@backlookcinemaTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@backlookcinemaTwitch https://www.twitch.tv/backlookcinemaBlue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/backlookcinema.bsky.socialMastodon: https://mstdn.party/@backlookcinemaBack Look Cinema Merch at Teespring.comBack Look Cinema Merch at Teepublic.com Again, thanks for listening.

Flesh & Blood, the third studio album by Poison, finds the group at the top of their form. The team of Bret Michaels on lead vocals, C.C. DeVille on lead guitar, Bobby Doll on bass, and Rikki Rockett on drums had been quite successful in the glam metal genre of the mid-80's, and had developed a reputation for a "work hard, play hard" mentality. While they had a legendary stage presence, they also were plagued with fights both within and outside of the band. A number of lawsuits in various cities were predicated on Michaels' tendency to get into fights at parties and other events. Despite these issues - or perhaps because of them - their reputation only grew over time. Flesh & Blood is an album that is more challenging musically than the earlier ones. The band is toning down their glam metal persona and taking on more serious lyrical themes. Songs cover a wide range from sex and motorcycles, to struggles with long term relationships, to frustration with the struggles seen in society. The band would drop the excessive makeup of their earlier career, and found the songs on a more blues-oriented rock. More piano work is included, with keyboardist John Webster contributing to the album sessions. The result was a success, reaching triple platinum status by 1991. The album peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 3 on the UK albums chart. This album would be a kind of high water mark for the group, as the industry was moving away from the metal sound of the late 80's and into the grunge sound of the mid-1990's. However, the group would go on to record and tour into the new millennium, and Bret Michaels would become both a solo act and a celebrity with his MTV reality show "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels."Lynch brings us a look at a somewhat more mature Poison on this week's for today's podcast. Unskinny BopNot every song has deep or significant lyrics. This hit single from the album started as a nonsense lyric, a placeholder that stuck. The catchy repetition would make it a crowd favorite at concerts, and it was a top 10, going to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.Valley of Lost SoulsA deeper cut, this song lyrics talk about the life of a rock artist struggling to make it in a place without compassion. It is a slower piece, but definitely not a ballad. Life Goes OnC.C. DeVille brought the original draft of this song to the band. The lyrics were inspired by a girlfriend of DeVille who was shot and killed in a California bar fight, and describe the quest for light at the end of a dark period in life.Something to Believe InThis ballad was the second single released from the album, and went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bret Michaels dedicated this song to his friend and bodyguard James Kimo Maano who had died previously. The lyrics reflect the frustration in the failures of society, from poverty, to the treatment of Vietnam veterans, to the hypocrisy of televangelists. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:You're In the Doghouse Now by Brenda Lee (from the motion picture “Dick Tracy”)This action movie based on the comic series from the 1930's starred Warren Beatty in the title role, along with Al Pacino and Madonna. STAFF PICKS:Ball and Chain by Social DistortionWayne kicks off the staff picks with a more alternative rock song penned by a punk rock band from their third and self-titled album. The lyrics describe a hard luck story of a man who can't escape his difficulties. It could be about a relationship, a rut in life, or about any vice that holds you down.Way Down Now by World PartyRob's staff pick is the first single from World Party's second studio album, "Goodbye Jumbo." If you hear echoes of "Sympathy for the Devil," that is deliberate - though the song is much more upbeat. It reached number 1 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart. World Party is primarily a one-man project from multi-instrumentalist Karl Wallinger from the Waterboys.Tie Dye on the Highway by Robert PlantBruce brings us a song off plant's fifth studio album "Manic Nirvana." The spoken line, "What we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000." is from Wavy Gravy and the Hog Farm Collective, delivered at the Woodstock festival in 1969 announcing the intention to provide free breakfast to the crowd. Kool Thing by Sonic YouthLynch closes out the staff picks with a song critical of the over-the-top masculinity of LL Cool J. It was the first single from their sixth studio album, "Goo." The track never mentions LL Cool J personally, but references a number of his works. Chuck D. of Public Enemy provides the spoken vocals to the song.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Mildred Pierce by Sonic YouthWe double up on Sonic Youth as we end today's podcast with their instrumental based on a 1945 film noir starring Joan Crawford.
