**Content Warning: This episode includes discussion of sexual and domestic violence. In this week's episode of then & now, LCHP Assistant Director Dr. Rose Campbell is joined by Dr. Shannon Speed to discuss systemic violence against Indigenous women. According to a 2016 study, Indigenous women are 10 times more likely to be kidnapped or murdered than almost any other population group in the United States. Although murder is the third leading cause of death among Indigenous women, these cases often go unsolved and unreported and attract little attention outside of local communities. Shannon discusses the policies that render Indigenous women particularly vulnerable to violence and underscores the impact of settler capitalism—specifically white supremacy and patriarchal ideologies—not only in the U.S. but also in the colonial history of Mexico. Compounding these factors is the jurisdictional vacuum found in Indian country, where U.S. federal laws have severely limited the ability of tribal law enforcement and tribal courts to prosecute violent crimes. In order to address the deep-seated structural and ideological factors that generate and perpetuate this cycle of violence against Indigenous women, Shannon advocates for a tribal sovereignty framework informed by a concern for human rights that aims to interrupt the cycle of violence and focus on a restorative rather than a more punitive approach.Dr. Shannon Speed is a tribal citizen of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma. She is Director of the American Indian Studies Center (AISC) and Professor of Gender Studies and Anthropology at UCLA. Dr. Speed has worked for the last two decades in Mexico and in the United States on issues of indigenous autonomy, sovereignty, gender, neoliberalism, violence, migration, social justice, and activist research. Her recent work, Incarcerated Stories: Indigenous Women Migrants and Violence in the Settler Capitalist State (University of North Carolina Press 2019), won the Best Subsequent Book Award of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association in 2019 and a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title award in 2020. She has a new co-edited volume entitled Heightened States of Injustice: Activist Research on Indigenous Women and Violence (University of Arizona Press 2021). Dr. Speed was the President of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA) from 2019-2020. Violence against Women and Girls - Press conference by Special rapporteurSpecial Rapporteur on violence against women and girls Reem Alsalem said, “Violence against women and girls in sport is a serious, systemic and systematic human rights issue that demands immediate attention at all levels.”Addressing reporters today (8 Oct) on Violence against Women and Girls in sport, Alsalem explored the forms, causes and consequences of violence against women and girls in sports, including sexual violence, coercion, gender pay gap, gender stereotypes, patriarchal structures, abusive coaches, and the general absence of robust policies and mechanisms to address abuses and protect victims. She said, “Women and girls in sport face multiple forms of violence - and I outlined them in the report - economic forms of violence, physical, psychological, coercive control, online violence and also for children, girls, they face neglect, particularly in some sports such as gymnastics.”She also said, “The report also describes the most common perpetrators of violence and their accomplices, which include state and non-state actors. So, I speak about coaches, professional colleagues, family members, managers, spectators, policy makers. And I assert within that conversation that states can also be considered complicit when they fail to prevent, prosecute and sanction acts of violence against women and girls in sport.”She continued, “Their ability to play sports in condition of safety, dignity and fairness has been further eroded by the intrusion of males who identify as female in female only sports categories and spaces.”She concluded, “Impunity fosters the culture of silence and injustice, and that is brought about in part by the autonomous regulatory frameworks of sports organizations that we have, which non sufficiently incorporated human rights lens or framework in the work, and they tend to prioritize reputation and winning over justice and accountability to victims.”The Special Rapporteurs of the Human Rights Council are independent human rights experts with mandates to report and advise on human rights from a thematic or country-specific perspective.Liberals on Poilievre's stance on Iran, Conservative privilege motionMinisters and Liberal MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal party holds its weekly caucus meeting. Jeff Oliphant lived the Hoosier dream. Born and raised in southern Indiana, he and his L&M high school teammates achieved national fame as they battled to become an early 80's version of Milan, falling just short of a state title after winning sectional & regional championships. Jeff then arrived at IU to play under Coach Knight and alongside such greats as Steve Alford, Jay Edwards, and Calbert Cheaney, boy does he have the stories to prove it. In this episode of Biographers in Conversation, Brett Mason chats with Gabriella about the choices he made while writing Wizards of Oz: How Oliphant and Florey helped win the war and shape the modern world. Wizards of Oz is an account of a friendship between two Adelaide men, the physicist Mark Oliphant and medical researcher Howard Florey and how their scientific discoveries profoundly impacted the course of World War II. It is a gripping tale of secret missions, international intrigue and triumph against all odds. Here's what you'll discover in this episode: Why Brett Mason chose to open Wizards of Oz with an electrifying prologue about Oliphant and Florey's high stakes, top secret missions to gain political and financial support from the American government and U.S. businesses for their scientific projects at a critical stage of World War II. Brett's research strategy and how he narrowed the biographical scope after uncovering an avalanche of primary source material. How Brett learned about the intricacies of microwave technology, nuclear physics and penicillin research given his background in politics rather than science and medicine. How Brett translated complex scientific information into a propulsive narrative that keeps you as the reader on the edge of your seat wondering what happens next. The extent to which Brett balanced scientific discoveries and advocacy with Oliphant and Florey's human stories. How Brett crafted a cohesive narrative from the experiences of two brilliant yet very different researchers who worked in disparate fields of science. How Brett presented Oliphant and Florey's lives with immediacy, so you as the reader feel as if you are Oliphant and Florey experiencing their frustrations, fear and desperation to gain support for their scientific endeavours when the stakes were so high. https://biographersinconversation.com Facebook: Share Your Life Story Linkedin: Gabriella Kelly Davies Instagram: Biographersinconversation
This week, as part of our grad life series, we spoke with Chloe Haimson and Stephen Oliphant about their experiences finding, applying, and interviewing for postdoc positions. Chloe Haimson is Director of Research of the Justice Policy Lab @the Watson Institute for International & Public Affairs at Brown University. Previously, she was a postdoctoral fellow in the Prison Education Program at New York University where she taught ethnography at Wallkill Correctional Facility. Her current work investigates the decisions parole agents make during their everyday work routines, how these choices influence the trajectories of individuals on parole after prison, and their consequences for the expansion of punishment in the U.S. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2022. Stephen Oliphant is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Michigan Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention. He received his PhD in criminal justice from Michigan State University in 2023. His interdisciplinary background includes training in the fields of public policy, criminal justice, and injury prevention. His research is primarily focused on firearm policy and the evaluation of interventions that address firearm injury and violence more broadly.
Hello and welcome to a new episode of Science of Slink, the evidence based pole podcast! This week we are joined by Dr.Val Oliphant. Dr.Val is a DPT physical therapist specializing in dance, circus arts, and pelvic floor needs, a professional dancer and teacher. Today we are talking about how your pole teaching informs your PT & vice versa, the most common issues seen in pole dancers, the sneakiest (maybe not most common but hardest to notice) issues seen in pole dancers, Progressions, and Regressions. Val discusses how a focus as of recent has been bridging the active/passive flexibility gap. She has discovered over her years as a physical therapist that exercising flexibility during training strengthening is the most applicable to real life, especially with an exercise like pole dance. A recent discovery that we explored was how stretching has evolved as research of the nervous system has recently come to light. One example of this is when we think we are stretching our hamstrings but we are pulling out sciatica nerve. Nerves prefer gente motions back and forth with fewer reps. The sneakiest issues seen in pole we think are elbow, shoulder, and wrist tendon issues created from trying to progress without the background of strength and mobility needed. Another common issue as you progress is only working one side. So what are Progressions and Regressions? This issue began with the isolation of learning to one move at a time rather than seeing the progression of learning. This issue stemmed primarily from social media and a lack of a standardized guide for building pole proficiency. Regressing is something that is very natural in pole and comes with the journey of our lives and changes in how we interact with and set goals in the pole space. Regressing isnt necessarily losing quality, it is changing how we move with the goal of being comfortable in our practice. Val and I like to frame injuries and changes as “de-loading” which is a term typically in sports. This deloading time allows us to explore more sustainable ways to practice and move forward.
