Trigger Warning: As Kamille bravely and openly shares her experience, we want to make sure you know this episode mentions sexual assault between 11:30-13:00 and briefly again around 22:00. “They are so resilient. I can see myself in them.” - Kamille Justus Children in foster care are some of the most resilient people you'll meet. They navigate continual change, traumatic experiences, and so much more, and their experiences often form a determination within them. Kamille Justus is one of these resilient people. In her case, that determination was to be a cycle-breaker in her family despite the hardship she had experienced throughout her life. Today, Kamille is a Lead Family Support Worker at The Center for Youth and Family Solutions, which has locations across Illinois. Kamille has endured her own experiences in what, now, could bring children into care and she is using her experiences to help connect with children and parents. She hopes that her experience can build those connections so that the families within the Knox, Henderson and Warren counties can be supported and reunited. In this episode, Kamille shares her story, the triggers that have formed as a result of what she experienced growing up, why her trauma created a passion to support others who have gone through something similar, the importance of empathy and compassion, and so much more. I am so grateful to Kamille for joining me for this conversation! Show Notes: https://theforgotteninitiative.org/kamille-justus-198/

The labyrinth of long-term care and long-term care insurance is a daunting one for most people. Unfortunately, many people haven't prepared for the unexpected or, in the case of older adults oftentimes the inevitable. Ben Rao's new book: Paying For Long Term Care, comes from his personal journey with his stepfather Tom and his years working in the senior year living industry. As Ben recounts his journey, it may sound like a familiar story, either your own or someone you know. While it may be a topic people prefer to avoid at all costs, or put off until they are in the throes of the situation, what they will find out is that the cost of doing so is too great. Ben lays out what people need to know in an organized and simple way that's easy to follow. Anyone who is over the age of 50, or has a family member or loved one who falls in that category, should definitely listen to what Ben shares in this episode. From Ben's information and his work in the senior services industry, the natural flow is the conversation with Wendy Rinehart, co founder and owner of Family Solutions for Care. Wendy will explain the important components that people need to address when seeking long-term care insurance as well as what to do when they are in need of filing a claim. She will explain what she calls the 4 C's Contract – what to look for in the contract that may be 30-40 pages in length, including elimination periods. Claimant – has to be asking for and receiving the kinds of care the policy will pay for. Care Providers – all levels. Carrier – 200 carriers to 10. Wendy's knowledge and explanation of the long-term care insurance process is a real eye opener you won't want to miss.

Topics Discussed and Key Points: The motivation to create Mom's House How Mom's House's certified home buyers save families' time and money Growing the Mom's House network of home buyers and senior living communities Episode Summary: In today's episode, Debbie speaks with Ben Rao, Co-Founder of Mom's House, a platform which connects certified home buyers with families who are in the process of selling their senior parent's house. Mom's House is known today as “the nation's largest senior home buyer network”. At some point during Ben's career as a real estate investor, he got connected to the founders of Family Solutions for Care, which “indoctrinated” him into the senior space. He realized through this partnership that it is a common problem among families to not have the support of an insurance company as they look to enter a care community. It so happened that Ben was also connected with a real estate investor focused on the senior space, who did over 50 transactions a year through referrals alone. The two teamed up to discuss how to fill this gap in the market, leading to the founding of Mom's House. Many families lack the resources and knowledge to get a house listed when it is time for their senior members to move into a care community. Hiring a real estate agent is often their only option, and even in this case it takes around four to six months to finally sell the house. That is, if the family is able to shoulder unexpected expenses and prepare for potential delays throughout those months. Mom's House changes the game by connecting home buyers certified by the company around the country to these families. Buyers then make an offer to buy the house for cash and close the deal in less than 30 days.   Links: Mom's House

A little about our guests. Adetokunboh (Ali) Afonja was born in Birmingham, AL, moved with his family to Lagos, Nigeria. After seven years, the Afonja family moved back to the states and settled in NY. Ali was always into sports and physical fitness. In the US Navy, he became the physical trainer for his division and later went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and his Master’s in sport’s psychology. Stephanie Jackson Afonja is originally from Hampton, VA. Growing up, Stephanie was very much into her schoolwork and church. She and her sisters were in church quite often as her mom was an evangelist. Stephanie enjoyed playing the violin and was a member of the Keyettes, a civic club and charitable organization. Stephanie has her Bachelor’s degree in psychology and her Master’s in clinical/community psychology. A little about their business. With their passion for families and love of sports, Stephani and Ali created Holistic Family Solutions, Family Restoration Services, The Children’s Fitness Academy and Families Overcoming Obstacles Together. They have created a more holistic and natural approach to counseling and therapy. Through psychology and sports, Stephanie and Ali have taught families how to help prevent, manage and treat their children’s emotional and behavioral disorders. One piece of advice (the nutshell version) Keep going. Connect to your inner strength and keep going. Anything mentally conceived can be physically accomplished if you don’t quit.
