What does it take to come out of the water nearly last and choose to come back? Not once, but race after race, distance after distance, through graduate school, a pandemic, and the arrival of three children in 17 months. Mike Nyman's triathlon story doesn't begin with a perfect swim or a podium finish. It begins with a graduation gift, a best friend, and a pool race in Lynchburg, Virginia. From that sprint in 2013, Mike has grown into a five-time Ironman finisher, Team Varlo Virginia Region captain, and an athlete who still gets nervous every single time he enters the water. That honesty is exactly what makes his story so worth hearing. In this episode, Mike talks through the self-supported iron-distance he completed during the pandemic, the power of community and diversity in endurance sports, what fatherhood has taught him about sacrifice and partnership, and the advice he gives to beginners and veterans alike. This is a story about discipline, resilience, and what happens when you refuse to let a race define you. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts. This week, Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats with her guest, Jenna Williams. The two talk about the power of community, the journey from STEM professional to nonprofit founder, and how innovative experiential learning is transforming the homeschooling experience in Westchester, New York. In this episode, we discuss: How Jenna Williams went from a chemical engineer at the EPA to educator, yoga teacher, and founder of Wonder Village, following a nudge from her late mother to use her talents to help people more directly. What Jenna has learned about building community: showing up, networking, saying yes to other local moms' ideas, and staying flexible so programs can evolve with what families actually want and need. When she noticed that local homeschool families were scattered in small, separate pockets across Westchester, with few opportunities to come together across geography and beliefs, why that convinced her to create Wonder Village. Why she believes parents deserve to see their children's "lightbulb moments" firsthand, and how Wonder Village is designed to bring families together to learn, play, and grow side by side. How the family scouting program grew into one of Wonder Village's most beloved offerings, with mixed-age, mixed-gender groups choosing their own topics—like anatomy—and turning them into creative, project-based activities and peer-led lessons. Jenna Williams is a chemical engineer turned educator, yoga teacher, and founder of Wonder Village Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing enrichment education, experiential learning, and community support for families in Westchester County. Blending her STEM foundation with a passion for teaching and mindfulness, Jenna creates programs that inspire children to learn through hands-on exploration—whether through science, nature-based experiences, cultural programming, or creative enrichment. With years of experience as a yoga teacher, she brings a grounded, heart-centered approach to leadership and learning. Dedicated to inclusive, community-driven education, Jenna's mission is to build spaces where every family feels seen, supported, and deeply connected. Website: https://wondervillage.org/

Food, Glorious Food…it's more than just a way to stay alive. Food brings people together. Families gather for meals. Communities gather for picnics, block parties and potlucks. It's also a way we explore each other's cultures. Today, “Foodies” are a massive part of the social media world. There's even an unofficial Foodie Caucus in the State Legislature. We brought a few of the Foodie Members together to sit down at a Sacramento area restaurant and talk about food, its importance to family, community and culture (and the ways the State Legislature helps keep food safe in California). Join Assemblymembers Jose Luis Solache, Stephanie Nguyen and John Harabedian for this tasty discussion.
Join us as Pastor Tommy continues the sermon series Here as in Heaven. Eugene Peterson described the church as a "colony of heaven in a country of death." God's desire is to bring heaven here, and this overflows into our worlds. In this message we will describe our strategy for missions based on Acts 1:8. We will emphasize the significance of Jesus' identity as King in the New Testament. We will stress that the phrase "kingdom of God" signifies God's reign and rule through Christ, encouraging repentance and belief in Jesus' message, urging us to prioritize God's kingdom in our lives. We will discuss the importance of recognizing Jesus as the Anointed One and the impact of this understanding on evangelism.References: Acts 1:8 & Matthew 28:16-20To get connected visit https://www.midtownvineyardchurch.com...To Donate https://midtownvineyard.churchcenter.... In this episode of Bottled Up, Andrew Allen talks with Chris and Payton Gollott, owners of The Frosty Mug in Wiggins, Mississippi. Chris shares his background growing up in D'Iberville, MS., his lifelong experience in the restaurant industry, and the journey to acquiring The Frosty Mug in December 2023. He discusses balancing tradition with new ideas, improving menu quality, and the importance of maintaining the community's beloved gathering spot. Payton, Chris's son, talks about joining the family business while studying business in college and how the hands-on experience is shaping his future goals. The Gollott family emphasizes community involvement, small changes for big improvements, and their vision to expand The Frosty Mug while staying true to its roots. If you're in Wiggins, check out their classic burgers and milkshakes, and experience a true local treasure. 3 Episode Key Takeaways 1. Preserving Community Heritage: Chris and Payton emphasized how important the Frosty Mug is to the Wiggins community. The restaurant has a long legacy and deep ties—people have worked there across generations, gotten engaged there, and even requested the Frosty Mug to cater their weddings. When Chris and his family took ownership, their main goal was not to drastically change things but to build on its nostalgic and historic value while making careful, thoughtful improvements. 2. Thoughtful Modernization: Rather than overhauling everything after purchasing the Frosty Mug, Chris took time to observe and gradually implement improvements, especially focused on quality and process in the kitchen. They enhanced recipes (like making sauces in-house and improving their grilled chicken), modernized operations with digital platforms, and sought to blend a classic 1960s feel with present-day conveniences, highlighting a respect for tradition while aiming for efficiency and better guest experiences. 3. Community Engagement and Growth Vision: Payton and Chris described a community-first approach, with deep involvement in local schools, events, and outreach spearheaded by Chris's wife. They have started catering, sponsored local teams, and introduced new services like breakfast. Their vision includes both physically expanding the restaurant (adding indoor seating, maybe enclosing patios) and potentially growing The Frosty Mug brand to other communities while preserving its unique, nostalgic character. In this episode, we are thrilled to welcome Jean Hoffman Lewanda back to the podcast to discuss her new book, Shalama: My 96 Seasons in China, published by Earnshaw Books. Listeners may recall Jean's previous appearance, where she shared insights about her father, Paul Hoffman's memoir, Witness to History: From Vienna to Shanghai—A Memoir of Escape, Survival, and Resilience. That captivating memoir details how Paul fled Vienna at the age of 18 to escape the rise of Nazism, arrived in Shanghai in 1938, and became part of the historic wave of Jewish refugees who found a safe haven in China during World War II. Jean's new book enriches this family saga by recounting events from her mother Shalama's perspective but presented as historical fiction. Drawing on firsthand accounts, including her mother's, Jean tells the story in Shalama's voice, tracing the family's journey from Harbin to Shanghai during the war-torn decades of the mid-20th century. The book interweaves the family's history with major historical events, including the Sungari River flood of 1932, the Japanese occupation, and the Communist takeover of China. Many of the readers of this warm thoughts column are aware that I write these lines a week before you have the opportunity to read the column. When you read this column, I will have returned from the International Congress on the Family, which was held on July 5th - 9th in Denver, Colorado. So stay tuned to this column as I will share with you my personal experiences and thoughts from this Congress. As I write these lines, they're anticipating 6,000 participants from all over North America and around the world at this International Congress. Those who come we hope will gain a fresh perspective and a renewal of hope for the future of the family and for Christian family values. As I anticipate my attendance at this Congress, I cannot help but reflect on the International Congress for the Family held in England in July 1990. It was my joy to be in England that year and serve on the publicity committee for that Congress. Opening that Congress was the Princess of Wales and among the many outstanding speakers was Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Mother Teresa closed the conference with the theme, "Family - Community of Love." She has inspired many in servant leadership in her work with the poor and the sick. She won the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. Her love and concern for children has inspired many people to be advocates for the children of the world. Few people have matched the contributions this saintly woman has made to mankind. Now in her 80s, she continues her service to humanity. The 1995 International Congress on the family in Denver is a joint effort of the American Association of Christian counselors and Focus on the Family. Stay tuned and experience with me a landmark event, renewing our hope together for the future of the family. Warm Thoughts: Your kindness influences your children. Your humor influences your home. I Like Your Work: Conversations with Artists, Curators & Collectors
Kim Garcia is an artist working in sculpture, drawing, and painting. Through her 2nd-generation Filipino American lens, her practice explores social dynamics and residual trauma from interpersonal relationships, community structures, and memory. Kim comes from a background in creating collaborative community projects that often employ alternative spaces to explore studio art practices, site-specific collaboration, and museum and exhibition research. She is the founder of The Cold Read, an online critique group and artist collective that engages gestures of care and support through writing and is one of the co-founders of after hours gallery, an art gallery in Los Angeles that hosts two-person exhibitions. Kim is based in Los Angeles and received her BA from UC San Diego and her MFA from UC Irvine. "Through the fusion of reality and fiction, my work emerges from personal encounters, aiming to complicate narratives surrounding second-generation Filipino American histories. I delve into the intricacies of post-colonial identity, exploring themes of intimacy and influence stemming from social interactions. Sculptures form the vibrant outcome of the work, fictionalizing personal events to probe power dynamics, trauma, community structures, and memory. Utilizing materials like medical casting tape, my artworks simultaneously display trauma and symbolize healing. Gradient colors evoke movement, while layered hues express emotional complexity. The sculptures breathe life into color, activating motion and tension. I perceive my work as a form of storytelling, where the malleability of oral narratives inspires a nuanced approach to archiving personal histories. Jesus intended his followers to become a family-like community. John Mark talks about how this idea of family was radical not only for first-century Jews, but also why it's just as radical for us today. Through it, he offers advice on how to build relational skills to bless and love our communities well.Key Scripture Passage: Mark 3v31-35Resources for this practice:https://practicingthewayarchives.org/practices/community
