In this episode of "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," former felony prosecutor and attorney Eric Faddis discusses the perplexing aspects of the Robert Telles trial and its surprising outcome. Despite overwhelming evidence against Telles, including his manipulative behavior and attempts to sway the jury, Telles was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 20 years, rather than a harsher sentence. Faddis and Brueski explore the influence of victim impact statements and testimony from Telles' family, which portrayed him as a devoted father, potentially softening the jury's stance. They express concern about jurors' susceptibility to misinformation and their inability to discern truth from fiction, especially in an era saturated with social media and disinformation. The discussion raises questions about whether the current societal climate, where reality is often questioned or distorted, is affecting jury decisions and leading to more lenient sentences or even wrongful verdicts. Faddis emphasizes the need for critical thinking and skepticism among jurors to ensure justice is served. - Robert Telles was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 20 years for murdering Jeff German. - The jury may have been influenced by testimony from Telles' family, who portrayed him as a caring father. - Faddis criticizes Telles' manipulative behavior on the stand, which included attempts to garner sympathy and control the narrative. - The discussion questions whether the current climate of misinformation and skepticism is leading to more lenient jury decisions. - Concerns are raised about the ability of jurors to differentiate between truth and deception, especially in high-profile cases. - The podcast explores the broader implications of jury decisions in a society struggling with the concept of objective reality. - Faddis calls for greater critical thinking and discernment among jurors to avoid being swayed by implausible defense theories. #RobertTelles #JeffGerman #JuryVerdict #Misinformation #LegalAnalysis #CriticalThinking #CourtroomDrama Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Home affordability are peoples number one concern when buying a home. WWJ's Murray Feldman explains what some people are doing to help offset the cost.
In this revealing special episode, we dive into the announcement that WinGate Wilderness Therapy in Utah is closing in September. WinGate has joined three other outdoor behavioral healthcare programs (SUWS of the Carolinas, Aspiro, Outback) to shutter its doors in recent months. We trace WinGate's origins, its rapid rise under Shayne and Sherry Gallagher and Family Help and Wellness, and ponder why these wilderness therapy programs, once hailed as life-changers, now face such existential challenges. Beyond the heartfelt narratives, we also explore the broader shifts in the industry, from public perceptions to the financial challenges that many residential wilderness therapy programs face today. By contrasting historical trends, such as the closure of Tent Therapy programs in the early 1900s, the post-Great Recession closures, and the current mental health crisis, we attempt to paint a comprehensive picture of where wilderness therapy stands today and where it may be going. Tune in for a broader understanding of the evolving field of mental health treatment in the outdoors. I remember sitting around the table asking my kids, they were older teens or young adults at the time - and I asked them “What are the top 10 manners you think everyone should know?” My conversation starter was derailed (as it often is in our family) as someone asked - are good manners even relevant today? This led us to talk about different cultures and different times and how manners - or what is considered good manners change. So instead of simply listing 10 top good manners, we had to ask why are actions considered good manners. This is an essential question for all parents to ask and find an answer for before they start insisting on certain behaviour calling it good manners. So today, let's talk more about good manners…. >>>FULL SHOW NOTES: Do you Intentionally Teach your Children Good Manners? >>>THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE: If you have enjoyed the podcast please consider taking the time to write a review. One of the biggest challenges I faced as a parent was to be a Christian parent. There was plenty of information out there telling me how to parent my children according to various scriptures - but I don't think that was my real problem. My real problem lay in my heart. I was a Chrisitan and I was a parent. How was I to be a Christian parent? That is what we are talking about in today's episode of Heart focused parenting - the biggest issue we have as a parent is our own heart and living out our faith as we parent our kids. >>>For full Show Notes: What does it mean to be a Christian Parent? as well as further reading on this topic. >>>THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE: If you have enjoyed the podcast please consider taking the time to write a review. Jim Daly is president of Focus on the Family and host of its daily radio broadcast, heard by more than 6 million listeners a week on nearly 2,000 radio stations across the U.S. The show has been honored as Program of the Year by the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB). In March 2022, he celebrated his 33rd anniversary with the ministry.Daly's personal journey from orphan to head of an international Christian organization dedicated to helping families thrive is a powerful story. Abandoned by his alcoholic father at age 5, he lost his mother to cancer four years later – a wound deepened when his grieving stepfather emptied the family home and left Daly, the youngest of five children, and his siblings to fend for themselves after their mother's funeral.Several tough years followed, including time in foster care, before Daly became a Christian in high school and found meaning, purpose and a sense of belonging. “I am living proof,” he wrote in his 2007 autobiography, “Finding Home,” “that no matter how torn up the road has already been, or how pothole-infested it may look ahead, nothing – nothing – is impossible for God.”Daly was named president of Focus on the Family in 2005. Under his leadership, the organization has taken on a major role nationally in encouraging and helping facilitate foster-care adoptions, earning recognition from the White House and Congress for its efforts. The ministry also has reinvigorated its traditional focus on helping couples build strong marriages and raise healthy, resilient kids.Daly started his career at Focus in 1989 as an assistant to the president, fostering relationships with the ministry's supporters. He was appointed international field director for Asia, Africa and Australia in 1992, and in 1997 was promoted to vice president of the International Division. In 2004, Daly was appointed chief operating officer, the role he held until he was handpicked by Focus on the Family founder Dr. James Dobson to be the group's president. Daly graduated from California State University, San Bernardino, in 1984 with a B.S. in Business Administration. During his senior year, he attended Waseda University in Tokyo, and after graduating worked for a Fortune 500 company. In 1997, he completed his MBA in International Business at Regis University in Denver. In 2009, he received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Colorado Christian University in Denver.Daly has received the 2008 World Children's Center Humanitarian Award, the 2009 Children's Hunger Fund Children's Champion Award, and the 2010 HomeWord Family Ministry Award. He has appeared on such television programs as “Fox & Friends,” “America Live with Megyn Kelly,” “ABC World News Tonight” and PBS' “Religion & Ethics”; and been featured in Time, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today and Newsweek, which named him one of the Top 10 next-generation evangelical leaders of influence. He was also the subject of a July 2011 cover story in Christianity Today.Daly is an author whose latest book, “When Parenting Isn't Perfect,” encourages parents to realize that they, like their children, aren't perfect and don't need to be – they're called to do their best in Christ, knowing that God works through all the messy family situations that are a normal part of this life. Other books Daly has written include “ReFOCUS: Living a Life That Reflects God's Heart” which explores how to engage the culture for Christ in a compassionate and winsome way and “Marriage Done Right: One Man, One Woman,” in which Daly examines God's purposes for marriage, including the unique benefits that a mom and a dad bring to the partnership of raising children.Daly has been married to his wife, Jean, since 1986. They have two sons and reside in Colorado Springs, Colorado.Focus on the Family is a global Christian ministry dedicated to helping families thrive. God's signature on the events were perfectly clear, but not until AFTERWARD. . HE knew what was coming. We thought we were making a Father's Day gift for Rich but we were participating, unknowingly, in a divine and sacred gift from God. It was the Father's Day we'll never forget because our heavenly father came with His perfect compassionate arms to embrace our family's father in a way that ONLY GOD COULD DO. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Every child longs for a loving father. Every child has a perfect Heavenly Father, and either an imperfect or absent earthly father. On today's podcast, we'll be talking about all of that - the harmful father, the absent father, the imperfect but loving father, and your child's Heavenly Daddy. This is an episode of honor and hope as well as some inspiration for marriage and some role modeling of fatherhood, too. Even the good dads aren't perfect, but those imperfect loving dads are probably accomplishing more than you might think! And you'll be reminded that no matter what kind of father your child has experienced, they have a loving, Heavenly Daddy who is always with them!Resources Mentioned in this episodeFocus on the Family Help line - 1-855-771-HELP (4357)Book: Different Children, Different Needs by Charles BoydVal's workshop audio: Help! What is it porn addiction? Porn has been around for a very long time and its been controversial as well. Some people are offended by it, some take part of it, others use it on a regular basis (myself) and some become "addicted" to it. It all comes down to personal preferences, choice, category or kink. It's important that you know that “porn addiction” isn't an official diagnosis recognized by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). But not being able to control the impulse to see porn can be a problem. The American Psychiatric Association states that "Addiction is a complex condition, a brain disease that is manifested by compulsive substance use despite harmful consequence. People with addiction (severe substance use disorder) have an intense focus on using a certain substance(s), such as alcohol or drugs, to the point that it takes over their life." Is it really an addiction? People may struggle to talk about this, its hard to know if people are enjoying porn on a regular basis, or cannot live their regular life without seeing it. Heres Joshua Shea story and how it dealt with his porn addiction. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/negrosparty/support
Dr. Mark E. Shaw announces the brand new video series available at The Addiction Connection entitled Family Help for Addiction: A Care Group Study. This study is catered to the family member who has a son or daughter, a husband or wife, or any loved one in the family who struggles with addiction. We typically focus on helping the addict seek treatment. The Addiction Connection website has a map https://www.theaddictionconnection.org/people/ that helps you find people and programs; this network is expanding every day. We have over 50 commissioned addictions biblical counselors and also several programs https://www.theaddictionconnection.org/residential-programs/ that serve the addicted with a genuinely biblical approach. But, sometimes we forget about those who have been affected the most—the friends and family of the addicted person. Mostly the addict won't come to the church for help. Dealing with the withdrawal and the physical part of the struggle causes them to seek elsewhere, and rightly so many times. But the church is uniquely stationed to offer the help and hope for the family members and friends of the addicted. After working on their own heart work— which is hard work— then they can help their loved one as well. The study is based on the book Divine Intervention: Hope and Help for Families of Addicts, and the small booklet, Understanding Temptation: The War Within Your Heart. Both are available at www.focuspublishing.com Mark describes how the Family Help for Addiction Care Group Study consists of 12 video lessons plus handouts that have Discussion Questions at the end, based on 2 Timothy 3:16. The discussion times are designed for small breakout groups so that each individual can talk about these things which are so painful in their lives. We want them to address these things, their own motives, their own hurt. Mark says that this tension between truth and grace… how do I interact with my loved one.. how do I reflect Jesus as I'm watching my child make self-destructive decisions… are some of the most difficult parts of living with an addicted loved one in your midst. The loved one is on a pathway that is debauchery, which is on the path of destruction/death. For parents, this is so tough. We've provided 12 video lessons, (online access only) 12 handouts, and 12 powerpoints in case you want to teach them yourself. We encourage you to take this material and use it the best way you can in your local church or ministry. There is a leader's guide to help you as well as a video to introduce how to implement the Care Group Study. You could use it as a weekly study, a retreat, a home group study or however you deem best. We believe this Care Group Study addresses something that is not being well addressed by the church world by and large. At the end of the day your child has a heart and a will, and has to make a choice to follow Christ or not on his or her own. Lots of success with this material has been seen even though it's hard hitting at times. The goal is to prick the heart to see that family members cannot change their loved one's heart but they can grow and change. God is still on the throne. You can receive the care you need from the Body of Christ in your suffering. Register to receive this brand new video course on www.theaddictionconnection.org

The Older Son in the parable of Luke 15:11-32 Dr. Mark E. Shaw continues with part 3 of a (3) three part series that relates these characters in the parable to addiction in the family. Podcast #26 is the focus on the younger brother. The father is the focus of podcast #27. The older brother's role is the focus of podcast #28 The Addiction Connection's coming soon video series of Family Help for Addiction: A Care Group Study is where you can find Dr. Shaw's more thorough teaching on this Luke 15 passage. Find out more about how to obtain the study and all the supplemental materials as soon as it is released at www.theaddictionconnection.org. Obtain the book Divine Intervention: Hope and Help for Families of Addicts at www.focuspublishing.com or by calling 1800-913-6287. Focusing on verses 25-32, Mark teaches about the significance of the older son's anger and refusal to celebrate the repentance of the younger son. The audience to whom Jesus was teaching this parable were the Pharisees and the Scribes. The older brother has a mindset of thinking his younger brother is undeserving of this celebration and he's right. We are all undeserving of grace and celebration when we repent but that's what God gives us. The older brother is angry and refuses to go in to the party. Even when the father comes out to plead with him to come into the party, the older son answers with resentment. We aren't to be like this -- condemning people in their sin. We welcome them in their repentance and we welcome them back to the Father. Mark speaks compassionate wisdom to siblings or family members of those struggling with an addiction. Other members of the family feel ignored, mistreated, and often want to condemn the repentance of the addict when he returns. It's a common reaction. It is not right though. His anger and disdain is as a result of his focus on himself. The lesson is to all of us that when a repentant person comes to know Christ we need to celebrate that. Kanye West's repentance was recently in the news. We are thankful that he is professing to be a Christian now and that he is writing God-fearing lyrics and songs. It is reason to celebrate whenever someone says that they are now following Christ. All new converts need to be discipled and grow in grace and knowledge as they study scripture and receive teaching. The older son in the parable Jesus told missed the point. He missed an opportunity to celebrate and rejoice with his father and his brother. We don't want to be like that. Look to Christ and look to heaven with gratitude when someone repents and turns to Christ in faith. There's nothing better than to see someone who is lost be found.

Mark teaches how the father in this prodigal son parable of Luke 15 does so many shameful things--the ultimate of which is forgiving and establishing the position of his rebellious son. This would have been unheard of in the Jewish culture of Biblical times-- both the shame the son exhibited and brought upon the family, and the shame that the father exhibited in forgiving him. The parable tells us that the father was looking for him when he returned, was ready to run to him, and did in fact run to him (another act of shame) to embrace him and kiss him. And the celebration begins. The teaching of the Gospel message of God's justice being appeased through the sacrifice of His only begotten son Jesus Christ is what Jesus is teaching here. God loves you! He wants to radically restore you to a position of sonship. He wants to adopt you into his family and to give you His robe of righteousness. He desires to give you His authority so that you can represent him as an ambassador of Jesus Christ, and to lead other people to Him so they don't have to die and go to Hell. You can be saved. You can be made righteous in Christ by grace, through faith and this is not your own faith --it is a gift of God, not a result of works so no one can boast.

Mark shows how the son goes from the disrespect of his father and horrible demand of his inheritance to the lowest place of desperation. Once the son makes a plan to get up, arise, go to his father, he plans out what he will say. "Father I have a sin problem" is how he words it, not I have a disease of addiction. "I've sinned against heaven and before you," is the exact quote from the Bible. Note his posture of brokenness and unworthiness and wretchedness. The glorious truth of the Gospel is that anyone can come to the heavenly Father and ask for forgiveness through Jesus Christ. You can't earn it. You don't deserve it, but the Father freely gives it to you.
Dr. Mark E. Shaw introduces The Addiction Connection's coming soon launch of a new video teaching series for families of addicts. With twelve (12) video lessons, supplemental materials including participant guides, a leader's guide, discussion group questions, assigned readings and homework, Family Help for Addiction: A Care Group Study assists churches and addiction ministries to have an outreach care group study that compassionately cares for the families of those struggling with an addiction of any kind. What it means to walk by faith from Hebrews 11, the "hall of faith chapter" when you have an addicted loved one is compassionately explained by Mark. The choice to "drive out a scoffer" from Proverbs 22:10 must be covered with tons of prayer, and tons of counsel from Christians who offer biblical counseling care. (Find a list of commissioned addictions biblical counselors here at www.theaddictionconnection.org.) Famly members don't want to be enablers or be seen as obstacles, but these are the two extremes of how an addict views their loved ones. Ephesians 5 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=eph+5%3A5-11&version=ESV teaches us how to walk in the light with an addicted loved one, and not be an accomplice to their sin but be pleasing to the Lord. It also is the same chapter that tells us what to put on instead of drunkenness, and be filled with the Spirit. Family Help for Addiction: A Care Group Study is an opportunity for churches and addiction ministries to use this material to help family members deal with the heartbreak of the addict in their family. Whether it's a husband, a wife, a parent of an adult child, a child, all the different relationships of family members, it's affecting the entire family. This group study all in one program will help them to see their cicumstances in a different light. God can take that pain and use it in His way to accomplish His plans for His glory and our good. Go to www.theaddictionconnection.org for more information on the release date of Family Help for Addiction: A Care Group Study and how to obtani the video series and supplemental material.
