When it comes to motivating students, musicians, or even ourselves, we all wonder: is it better to reward effort — or call out mistakes? It turns out, both approaches can work… but they lead to very different kinds of learning.Get all the nerdy details here:Reward vs. Punishment: Which Leads to Faster Learning?* * *Have you ever wondered why it is exactly that things often sound better at home than they do on stage? Could You Learn a Piece in a Day? - PHH 159

At one of our Harp Mastery® retreats several years ago. I presented a workshop called “Learn Anything Fast.” That sounds like a pretty ambitious topic, and I imagine that some of the retreaters were a little skeptical. After all, learning a piece of music takes time. But my point in that workshop was this: does it have to take as much time as it's taking you now? There's no golden rule about how long it should take you to learn a piece. That's something students would often love to know, and it would be wonderful if each piece came with a guarantee, like all those infomercials have: Learn this piece in 30 days or your money back! There is no “30 day guarantee” for a piece, because each harpist approaches each piece with a different set of individual skills and strengths. Each piece requires specific skills, either technical skills or musicianship skills or both. How long it takes you to learn a piece is a combination of the demands of the piece, your own skill development relative to those demands and the systems or learning habits you bring to the piece. That's where I think we can make big changes, the kind of changes that could drastically shorten your learning timeline for any piece. So on today's show, we are going to look at what exactly goes into learning a piece, skills you already have in your pocket that can help you learn that piece faster, and I'll give you some tips to tweak your learning system so you can leapfrog ahead and start playing that piece sooner. In one day? Maybe. Let's find out. I might as well get this out of the way. This is going to be one of those podcasts that sounds like it's telling you you're doing it all wrong and you've been doing it wrong for years. I say it's going to sound like that, but I want to be clear that's not the point of our topic today. The real point is finding a path to growth, a path forward, and often finding a path forward means doing something different. So I want you to approach this topic with that progress mindset, because the ideas I'm about to share with you about how I think you could or should approach a new piece might sound a little uncomfortable, and that's exactly the point. You may know that the only one-on-one teaching I do is with my Gold Circle students. These students are special, not because of their playing level - they run the gamut there - but because of their commitment to their harp playing. They take their harp playing seriously, and that's why I feel privileged to be able to work with them and help speed them along their paths.  I'm mentioning this because one of my Gold Circle students, Beverley, shared with me something her French teacher told her when she was studying French in high school. In essence, it was this: the teacher gave the beginning class a rule that she qualified as only a rule for now. As the students became more experienced, she said she would rescind that rule and give them a better one, but that second rule wasn't something that would be useful for them at this earlier stage of their learning.  Thanks to Beverley for that example, because that's how I want you to understand what I'm going to give you today. It's not a grammar rule, obviously, but it's a way - three ways, actually - to start learning a piece. I can almost guarantee that these ways will either sound exciting and inspiring or terrifyingly impossible. But what's important is that I think you will see that they make sense as a way to leverage the growth you have already made.  So while you may be comfortable with the system you've been using, I'd like you to consider the idea that, although it was a system that worked well at the stage where you were, there might be a better system for the stage where you are now. Are You Taking Too Long to Learn That Piece? - PHH 080

Practicing Harp Happiness

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2022 32:35

“How long should it take to learn a piece?”  I am asked that question so many times and every time my heart sinks. Why? First of all, there's that word “should.” There are no “shoulds” in the learning process. The word “should” leads to the idea that there is one standard against which we could judge our efforts and which we could use to plan our music learning. An objective standard, such as “this piece will take any harpist three months to learn,” is absolutely impossible. So the word “should” isn't helpful. But even if we reframe the question in very specific terms - “how long will it take me to learn this piece?” - we still run into difficulties trying to come up with an answer.  Each harpist is unique, bringing a unique set of skills and experiences to their music. Each piece has challenges that are specific to that piece which may test an individual harpist's skills differently. Plus, anyone's progress on any piece will be affected by their practice time and practice habits, their learning style, even by how much they like the piece. Then there's the question of what we mean by “learning a piece.” Do we mean performance-ready or memorized? Or do we mean that we have the notes fairly reliable but maybe not up to tempo? Or do we merely mean that we've spent enough time working on it that we're ready to call it done?  But even if we accept the fact that there is no definitive timeline or clear end point for learning a piece, we can still explore the various factors in the process. After all, once we know what affects our learning speed, we can work at developing the skills we need to help us learn faster.  On the show today, I will share the timeline professional harpists use for learning their repertoire and talk about how you can adapt that for yourself. Plus, I'll review my famous “conveyor belt system” that helps you see the stages of development that any piece goes through and I'll even give you some timelines that you can experiment with to discover how you learn best. There's an extra bonus for you too; when you learn a piece faster, you often play it better too. That sounds good to me, and I bet it sounds good to you too! Have you ever wanted someone to just give you a system for learning a piece of music, a system that would work for every piece, every time? Me too. But there isn't one. Ok, don't give up on me yet. I do have one that will work for most pieces, most of the time, and I'm going to teach that to you today.   Why are we always looking for that single system, that magic bullet? My idea is that it's because learning music is so complicated, with so many considerations and moving parts. At the same time as we are dealing with all this complexity, we are trying to make the music beautiful and expressive, something that transcends mere notes and rhythm. Not a small task my friend.  I found a quote the other day that really spoke to me. It's a quote from a Danish computer scientist who teaches at Columbia University. His name is Bjarne Stroustrup. I think I was drawn to this quote and some others of his because his sense of humor reminded me of my dad's. My dad was also a computer programmer.  The quote I want to share for the purposes of our discussion today is this: The most fundamental problem in software development is complexity. There is only one basic way of dealing with complexity: divide and conquer. Substitute the phrase “learning music” for “software development” and it works perfectly, like this:  The most fundamental problem in learning music is complexity. There is only one basic way of dealing with complexity: divide and conquer. That's our topic for today, and the basis for the system I am going to share. The best way to learn a piece of music is to divide it into sections. I bet you do this already, but there are super-effective ways to do it and some that are less so, and we're all about effective practice here. I'm going to teach you what I believe is the best system for using section work to divide and conquer almost any piece of music. So grab a piece of music and a pencil and let's start dividing so you can conquer. On today's episode of the Prepped and Polished Podcast, Alexis Avila talks to Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, Ph.D., MEd, an expert in the field of Educational Neuroscience. He has conducted research and lectured at Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, the University of Melbourne, and over 100 schools across four continents. He is the author of the book "Stop Talking, Start Influencing: 12 Insights from Brain Science to Make Your Message Stick." Today, Jared gives us his top five strategies teens and adults can use to learn faster. Tip 1: Get your mind right. Make sure you tell yourself you CAN learn this and jump start your mind. Tip 2: Match context to the outcome. If you have a test next Friday in a Red room, then study in that red room, wear the same cologne, etc. Routines become highly contextual. Tip 3: Don't multitask. No one can multitask. Memory and accuracy tanks when you perform more than one task at a time. So if you're studying, put the phone away, and study. Music is ok to study too as long as it's just background noise. Tip 4: Less is more. You'll do better with less but focused study over the course of two weeks, vs. study and multitask for four hours straight. Try 25 minutes of focused study then break for 5 minutes and text friends or grab a snack, then come back for 25 minutes. If after 25 minutes you reach a Flow state and want to keep studying, by all means, go past the 25 minute mark. Tip 5: Recall is everything. The key to a deep memory is you have to pull info out of your brain. So talk a lot about what you learned. Teach someone else some of that info. Bonus tip: You create the narrative or find the story behind the info you want to remember. Jared's tips for teens: 1. Life is longer than you think. Make decisions in advance but ok to change your mind later. Remain open. 2. Recognize you are in charge of this. The Brain and body are passive and responds to you. Take control. Becoming empowered is a process of gaining knowledge, and then putting it into action. When I started my career in the health field, my intent was to empower people with the tools to help them reach their goals—whether that be losing body fat or reversing disease. I’ve been fortunate enough to serve countless people in my clinical work and in the gym. You’ve probably been hearing the news about WMDs from the media for many years. In fact, the media itself is often a WMD (Weapon of Mass Distraction). Today we are living in the time of the greatest distraction known to man. We’ve gained some prominence over acquiring food and water, most folks have a roof over their head, and meeting potential mates can be as easy as swiping right on your phone. But all of this newfound free time has opened up a blackhole of time to kill, and now we have an infinite amount of information to pour into it. Sure dating today is a lot more like Wheel of Fortune than real life (I was always intrigued by those people who guessed just $1 for the price of a washing machine… why not $2? Why not 2???). The problem isn’t the apps and services, or the guessing that we do when we get on our devices. The problem is the sheer amount of data we all have to process each and every day of our lives now. Because of this, most of us have simply outsourced a lot of our thinking to our smartphones. Basic calculations in our head? Nope, I’ve got a calculator for that. Remember my best friend’s new phone number? Nope, we might text or talk all the time, but my phone will remember your number for me - and if I lose my phone, well, I guess I lose you too… it’s been a great ride!. Remembering appointments, managing money, etc. Our phones can do it all. And, in a strange way, our smartphones have now made us dumber. We may not have devolved to the point of our primitive ancestors, but have you seen how entertaining a fidget spinner is now? What reason can you give for it? Seriously! Well, if you’re reading this, fidget spinner fan or not, I know that you’re someone who’s interested in living an amazing life. You would love to be healthy, fit, and happy, and have awesome relationships too. These things require study. And with so much information to go through, how in the world can we ever make the strides we want before we make the transition to the big world wide web in the sky? The solution is simple, yet profound. In today’s world, where information is flying at you a thousand miles an minute, we must retrain our brains to learn in a new and powerful way. We all have an almost unlimited capability to learn, but we must learn how to unlock it. And for that, there’s only one expert I know who fits the bill. The man who companies like Virgin, Nike, Zappos, Fox Movie Studios, and Harvard University bring in to up-level their performance. The man who superstars in entertainment and industry like Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Jim Carrey, and Will Smith call on to help them learn faster and improve their memory. The one and only, Jim Kwik. In this episode you'll discover: The surprising effect that coffee has on your metabolism. Why the all-time favorite method of study called cramming will cause you to fall short. How digital distraction is zapping our brainpower. How our smart devices can actually make us dumber. How much of our memory is determined by genetics. How multitasking compares to being high and sleep deprived. Practical tips to help you avoid wasting too much time on social media when you need to get work done (this can help all of us!). The difference between recognition and recollection. What primacy and recency have to do with learning. How music can influence memory and learning. What spaced repetition is and how to use it to boost your brainpower. Why your emotional state has an impact on memory. How your memory is deeply connected to your sense of smell. How important relevance is to memory and learning. The most effective way to take notes (and things you should stop doing immediately!). Items mentioned in this episode include: Onnit.com/Model
