The global tech industry depends on Taiwan's semiconductor chips and many believe the sector plays a key role in the island's national security, helping stave off an invasion from mainland China. But as relations between China and Taiwan worsen, some countries are taking steps to become less reliant on Taiwanese chips. Already, the US, Germany and Japan have lured Taiwanese semiconductor makers to their own shores. Could that make Taiwan a more vulnerable target for attack?Presenter James Kynge visits the island and speaks to FT greater China correspondent Kathrin Hille, Taiwan's science and technology minister Cheng-Wen Wu, the president of Taiwan's semiconductor industry association Chih-I Wu, UMC associate vice-president Michael Wang, and Hsin-mei Cheng, writer and producer of 'Zero Day', a TV show about a hypothetical invasion from the mainland.Free links to read more on this topic:US and Taiwan seek to strengthen drone supply chain to keep out China Taiwan's new leader faces China threat and voters left behind by chip boom Taiwan on the faultline Presented by James Kynge. Hi everyone, and welcome to the seventeenth episode of A History of Literary Criticism, a podcast about the history of literary criticism. Today's episode concerns Wen-Hsin Tiao lung, a book by Liu Xie whose title can be translated as The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons. Nothing funny going on with the structure today—we'll start with the social and literary context, then on to a pretty broad summary of what is an actual book-length text, and then a discussion in the context of Abrams' triangle.

DPP Secretary-General Tells America that Taiwan is Determined to Defend Itself Against China D-P-P Secretary-General Lin You-chang says Taiwan is determined to defend itself against China. During a public seminar hosted by the Global Taiwan Institute in Washington, D.C., Lin said Taiwan's will to defend itself, as well its investments in national security, continue to grow stronger .. .. and while the Lai administration has the ideal of pursuing peace, Taiwan must not have illusions about China, as Beijing's intention to seize Taiwan has never changed regardless of which party is in power in Taiwan. Lin said Beijing has only adjusted its approach from using "shells and missiles" during Chen Shui-bian's presidency, to "money" during Ma Ying-jeou's presidency, and "shells, missiles, silver bullets, and cognitive warfare" during Tsai Ing-wen's presidency. Lin said that under President Lai Ching-te, China is using all of those approaches as well as disinformation (假信息) and legal battles in an attempt to disrupt and infiltrate Taiwanese society. North Korea is flying more trash-carrying balloons toward South Korea in the latest round of Cold War-style psychological warfare between the rivals. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (參謀長聯席會議) says it detected more balloons launched from North Korea on Thursday morning following launches the previous evening. The joint chiefs said North Korea launched around 420 balloons from Wednesday evening to early Thursday and that about 20 of them had been discovered so far in the South Korean capital of Seoul and nearby Gyeonggi province. It says the balloons were filled with paper waste, plastic bottles and other trash but contained no dangerous materials. New study sheds light on plastic pollution A new study finds that every year people create 57 million tons of plastic pollution. The material winds up everywhere from the deepest oceans to the highest peak of Mount Everest to inside people's bodies. More than two-thirds of it is in the Global South (南方國家) Researchers in the United Kingdom examined waste produced at the local level in more than 50,000 cities and towns. They looked at waste that gets into the open environment, rather than plastic that goes into landfills or gets burned properly. But experts say that the study's focus on pollution, rather than growing plastic production, lets the plastics industry off the hook. "Wu Hsin" (meaning No Mind) was a fictitious character created by Roy Melvyn to create and structure a series of pith teachings and pointers to the Absolute, based on key non-duality teachings. Despite the controversy around the "deceit" in publishing these works as words from an "authentic" Chinese Master, I have chosen to upload these readings as they are some of the clearest pointers I have read. Please be aware of the context as to how they were created. In essence, we are all really imaginary "persons" anyway! Citizenship is traditionally viewed as a legal status to be possessed. Cultivating Membership in Taiwan and Beyond: Relational Citizenship (Lexington, 2021) proposes the concept of relational citizenship to articulate the value-laden, interactive nature of belongingness. Hsin-I Cheng examines the role of relationality which produces and is a product of localized emotions. Cheng attends to particular histories and global trajectories embedded within uneven power relations. By focusing on Taiwan, a non-Western society with a tradition to adeptly attune to local experiences and those from various global influences, relational citizenship highlights the measures used to define and encourage interactions with newcomers. This book shows the multilayered communicative processes in which relations are gradually created, challenged, merged, disrupted, repaired, and solidified. Cheng further argues that this concept is not bound to nation-state geographic boundaries as relationality bleeds through national borders. Relational citizenship has the potential to move beyond the East vs. West epistemology to examine peoples' lived realities wherein the sense of belonging is discursively accomplished, viscerally experienced, and publicly performed. Hsin-I Cheng is an associate professor in the Communication department at Santa Clara University. Her research and teaching interests focus on how multiple identities intersect and influence human interaction and relationships. She is the author of Culturing Interface: Identity, Communication, and Chinese Transnationalism (2008), and her work appears in Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, Language and Intercultural Communication, and Women & Language. Li-Ping Chen is Postdoctoral Scholar and Teaching Fellow in the East Asian Studies Center at the University of Southern California. Sandeep Maheshwari is a name among millions who struggled, failed and surged ahead in search of success, happiness and contentment. Just like any middle class guy, he too had a bunch of unclear dreams and a blurred vision of his goals in life. All he had was an undying learning attitude to hold on to. Rowing through ups and downs, it was time that taught him the true meaning of his life.

https://notesonfilm1.com/2021/06/16/hou-hsiao-hsien-17-contexts-8-the-rice-dumpling-vendors-hsin-chi-1969/ A discussion of Hsin Chi's THE RICE DUMPLING VENDORS, a rare male melodrama. The protagonist kicks his wife out of the house for perceived infidelity; as soon as he does the whole family falls apart and is plunged in a spiral of poverty, the father at one point abandoning his baby even as his two minor children take on jobs in order to buy milk. The film documents a society on the cusp of modernity and suffering the effects of the social and economic effects produced by it. Stylistically, the film is highly skilled and gorgeous to look at. Character's thoughts are offered in voice-over or through song. There is a mix of genres: noir/action/family-melodrama/documentary. It's a cinephile's film, with references to PSYCHO and other films. The music borrows from CINDERELLA as well as then current pop-hits as Sinatra's version of 'I've Got You Under My Skin'. We also discuss the extent to which this film is an influence on Hou Hsiao-hsien's THE SANDWICH MAN. The more Hsin Chi films we see, the more we like and value them.
https://notesonfilm1.com/2021/06/13/hou-hsiao-hsien-16-contexts-7-dangerous-youth-hsin-chi-1969/ Continuing with our discussion of Hsin Chi films. This time the focus is on DANGEROUS YOUTH. We offer a bit of background on Hsin Chi; discuss how the film is similar to Nagisa Oshima's CRUEL STORY OF YOUTH, Godard's BREATHLESS, BEAT GIRL, and all the motorcycle gang Roger Corman films of the mid-sixties. The film has the thematics and energy of pre-code sex melodramas but surrounded by a rock-pop soundtrack stylised and transformed by foregrounding the sax. DANGEROUS YOUTH is visually inventive, with fascinating compositions, interesting intimations of nudity through shadows, compositions that make the most of the architecture to suggest interior states and external perspectives. The story of a young girl groomed into prostitution for money by the pimp she loves and the richer woman who is pulling his strings, is given sexy, noirish form and fascinating gender politics. Does anyone believe the end?
https://notesonfilm1.com/2021/06/11/hou-hsiao-hsien-15-contexts-6-foolish-bride-naive-bridegroom-hsin-chi-1967/ We continue our discussion of the films kindly made available in wonderful versions by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute. This time we discuss the second Hsin Chi film on view, FOOLISH BRIDE, NAIVE BRIDEGROOM, a wonderfully inventive screwball comedy displaying a wide array of cinematic devices for humours effect (stop-motion, music, fluid camera), anchoring it in solid structure, set on the cusp of modernity, and humorously putting all the major decisions on the hands of the female protagonists. Great fun.
https://notesonfilm1.com/2021/06/09/hou-hsiao-hsien-14-contexts-5-the-bride-who-returned-from-hell-hsin-chi-1965/ We discuss THE BRIDE WHO RETURNED FROM HELL, from a cycle of Hsin Chi films the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute is currently providing free on Youtube and in excellent restorations. We discuss its debt to Rebecca, Strangers on a Train, The Innocents, the Bond films, melodrama and the Gothic. We talk about its formal inventiveness in its use of a rotating camera and split screen. We also explore how its interspersed with musical numbers that often take place amongst a recognisable landscape. It's a Taiwanese film where one can't help but note its transnational dimension. It's a film we both liked and recommend.
"If I were to save only two books from the whole world of the mystics, one would be Sosan's Hsin Hsin Ming," Osho says. "It contains the quintessence of Zen, the path of awareness and meditation...the very soul of Zen." Himself a master of both words and silence, Osho builds a bridge between the modern, chattering mind and the infinite no-mind of Sosan through these Zen sutras - the only words uttered by Sosan, the 6th-century Chinese mystic and third Chinese patriarch.
