This year for Adoption Day families were greeted by the friendly critters from Tiny Tots Mobile Petting Farm in Dewey which included fainting goats, a sheep named George, bunnies, chickens, and a turkey named Timmy. Jay Shindell found fostering by "accident". The single dad was only originally going to do emergency placements but soon after welcoming the first baby into his home, he was in love and wanted to adopt. He survived multiple placements, supporting many birth families and helping them get on their feet before finally finding his son (who you can hear cooing sweetly in the background throughout the interview!). Jay talks about how he dealt with loss, how he remembers and honors the children that have been in his home and how he has found a passion for fostering and foster-to-adopt. He also discusses being an older parent, and being open and honest with his employers, who have been very supportive of his journey and needing time off.Jay is still in the last stages of finalization with his son. In this inaugural episode, I introduce who I am, why I decided to start the show and how my family came to foster-to-adopt. I give a brief background on my career as an actor and then a voice actor and audiobook narrator as well as my relationship with my husband and our surprise struggles to have children. I go on to detail how the intentional building of our forever family unfolded over the past decade. I share other options we explored for starting a family, such as IVF, "straight adoption" through a lawyer, open adoption and surrogacy, and how we vacillated but finally arrived at the tough decision to foster-to-adopt. Other topics include how we prepared for the journey and why we chose to work with a foster family agency, as opposed to going directly through the County. I discuss my fears about saying "yes" to a placement and why I said "no" five times before saying yes, employing some wise advice I received with regards to that. I then talk about what it was like to be in the process of fostering, including some of the challenges and ups and downs as well as the mindset I learned to cultivate. I describe the magic, signs and synchronicities from the universe all along the way that let us know we were on the right track to finding the children meant to join our family, and how it felt to finally arrive at adoption. I also discuss safe surrenders, as my second son was safely surrendered by his birth mom, something we were told never to expect and that rarely ever happens. I am so grateful to be able to bring this show to you, to share my family's story as well as the stories of seven other amazing, happy families in Season One of this podcast. My hope is that it will be informative, inspiring, and educational for all who are interested in this subject, which is very dear to my heart.

In this episode, host Alison Wickline and Morgan Bays-Simpson discuss the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, and more specifically, the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program. Morgan is a recruiter for Wendy’s Wonderful Kids and works at DePaul. Through the Wendy's Wonderful Kids program, the Foundation funds recruiters, like Morgan, who use a child-focused model to find permanent homes for children in foster care.

Amanda Reitz had a dream, to start an animal sanctuary to give pets the best possible chance at finding a forever home.  But at the time she was still in college and people weren’t quite sold on the idea, including her own family initially. By 2006, Amanda had her parents involved transforming family property in Marion for a spacious sanctuary for animals. A couple years later, brother Marcus Reitz joined on with HEA full-time and they raised funds for a new adoption center in Ashwaubenon.  Hear the humble beginnings of HEA, from a Basset hound named Walter, to the plans to help animals across the country find forever homes.

There are more than 400,000 children in the US foster care system. The kids who are not returned to their parents or adopted move from family to family until they turn 18. And a heartbreaking 24,000 age out of the system with no financial or family support. So, what can we do to either reunite these kids with family members or help them get adopted? Richard Villasana is the Founder and CEO of Forever Homes for Foster Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving all foster children a happy, healthy life in a permanent home. An international authority on immigration issues and foster families, Richard has been featured on CNN International, Univision and ABC TV, among many other media outlets. He has also worked as a translator for the UN and served proudly in the US Navy. Richard has spent the last 25 years working with government agencies across the country to reunite immigrant and foster children with their relatives. On this episode of Men on Purpose, Richard joins Emerald to explain how he was recruited to unite foster kids with their families and share the sense of justice that inspires him to speak up for this voiceless population. He discusses why so many foster kids end up homeless when they age out and describes the disruption they face in the system, some moving multiple times in a single year. Sarah Dukes started playing piano when she was six years old and composed her first song at the mere age of eight. Classically trained until she was 18, the North Carolina raised pianist increasingly turned to her music and songwriting as a way of expressing herself, and by the time Sarah finished high school, she had a stirring collection of original pieces that made up her debut album, "Finding Forever", performed by world-renowned pianist, Yaron Gershovsky.   Dukes was handpicked by Whisperings-Solo Piano Radio as one of their exclusively featured solo piano artists, and her richly nuanced songs have been featured in several popular documentaries produced by Jewish Educational Media, as well as streamed on various international channels including Enlightened Piano Radio, One World Music Radio, and Pandora. Sarah's pieces have also been featured in the in-flight entertainment package for a few airlines.   Sarah recently released a new album of original piano solos, “Life Sometimes”, which has been selected a winner in the Global Music Awards and was honored with a Silver Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Music in the New Age Solo Piano and Album categories.
