This is the first of two podcasts episodes marking one year since the Dobbs decision, by which the Trump-stacked United States Supreme Court wiped away decades of precedent with the Roe V Wade decision that guaranteed the Constitutional right to an abortion for all Americans. That year has seen the redoubling of efforts by abortion rights organizations across the country to regain those rights and more, including Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, who held a terrific live event last weekend at The Cathedral, a beautiful space in East Austin. This episode presents that event, featuring Wendy Davis, State Rep. Donna Howard and more - all standing firm in the fight for the freedom for ALL of us to maintain control over our bodies and our destinies. Watch for part two, a discussion with representatives of the Frontera Fund and Planned Parenthood of the Rio Grande Valley, for a closer look at what's happening on the abortion rights front in that very important part of Texas, in the next couple of days. As states in the US move to restrict abortion following the overturn of Roe v Wade, pro-choice activists, are moving just as fast in designing creative ways to ensure abortion access for all. In the Rio Grande Valley, we follow local organizers as they package emergency contraception for residents and form new coalitions to guarantee access across a large state with few resources. In Arizona, we follow Natacha Chavez, the granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, who is working to codify abortion rights protections in her state. In Kansas, community leaders galvanize voters to oppose a ballot amendment that would ban abortion. Grassroots organizers across the country continue to mobilize by activating their communities in any way they can - pushing back against bans and innovating. Visit CTLpod.com to find out more about the podcast, resources for abortion care, and information on how you can take action.Special thanks to South Texans for Reproductive Justice; Frontera Fund, Rockie Gonzalez, and the R.E.D. This is NOT a pod series you listen to while cleaning out your closet. It's about listening with friends and utilizing the activity and discussion guide designed for each episode to deepen your knowledge. The goal is helping you discover which part of abortion activism is right for you, so you can help build and grow community.  Each of the five episodes features amazing experts from the reproductive health, rights, and justice movements who share the opportunities available for us to show up and show out.  Before you get into episode Four, listen to Episode 1 if you haven't already. It is pretty much your “Reproductive Justice 101” crash course. Abortion activism is just one part of this intersectional movement, so this first episode is designed to help ground your experience throughout this series and overall abortion advocacy in a Reproductive Justice Framework, making sure to center those most most affected by these harmful laws, and by following Black, Brown and Indigenous leadership as we fight for bodily autonomy. We know all that rage in you is just yelling, “abortion bans are f**king trash!” So, we put together Episode 4 as a guide on how to turn this rage into much needed legislative advocacy. This next episode covers the challenges we are facing legislatively and what you can do about it! Our panel is going to introduce you to ways you can help get these old ass abortion laws off the books, help folks who face criminalization for pregnancy outcomes, and how to actually say some game-changing shit to those in legislature. We've heard a lot about the hypothetical harm of Texas' incredibly restrictive abortion bill, SB8, and how it is a glimpse into a post-Roe future. But we wanted to talk to someone on the ground in Texas who is seeing firsthand the impact this bill is having on Texans seeking abortions. We're joined on the podcast today by Zaena Zamora, Executive Director of the Frontera Fund. The Frontera Fund makes abortion accessible to people in the Rio Grande Valley (an area on the US-Mexico border in the southernmost part of Texas) by providing financial and practical support to people seeking abortion.    Zaena talks about the lengths that Texans now have to go to in order to seek abortion, and the skyrocketing cost of providing financial assistance in a time when most of the fund's callers need assistance traveling outside of the state for their abortions. Because Frontera Fund serves a large immigrant population, Zaena also speaks to the additional obstacles that undocumented folks, and especially those along the border, face when they are forced to travel in order to seek abortion. The situation in Texas shows us the sobering reality of what life may be like for millions of people in the south and midwest when the Supreme Court rules on Dobbs v. Jackson in June 2022. It's not an optimistic picture - but you can help. Donate to abortion funds like the Frontera Fund, or your local fund (which you can find on abortionfunds.org). Push your local, state, and Congressional representatives to protect abortion rights. And keep saying the word abortion, as stigma thrives in silence.  Links: - Frontera Fund website - Frontera Fund donation site:  - Donation site for all Texas funds - The National Network of Abortion Funds: find a fund to donate to, including your local funds - TRANSCRIPT of episode! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, contributing editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack to round up the week in news. They kick off the show with updates on the Kellogg's unionization effort, Omicron, and Tucker Carlson's prostate (not a metaphor for his mouth). Then, Alex joins as they cover the punting of the BBB into the business of the next Democratic administration, be it next term or next decade, the admin blaming the 50/50 Senate, and the absurd incompetence both in blowing this opportunity, and not even realizing the massive impact in the midterms and moving forwards that this will likely have. This brings them to the state of democratic leadership, Congress' realization that they can actually just let good things expire instead of killing them, and Larry Kudlow comparing Joe Manchin to Elon Musk due to their ingenuity, rather than the ability to stifle and misdirect innovation. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Matthew Film Guy to walk through what's on his plate, what he's been watching, and what editors actually do. Sam gets lost in the film technology of the 80s, they discuss Matthew's upcoming project, and dive into getting personal with the Beatles with “Get Back.” And in the Fun Half: Tim Pool once again makes the mistake of debating someone who cares and knows what they're talking about, Brandon stops by to bring some boxes of sweets and his winning attitude, and Sam relives his glory days as they watch his early aughts takedown of Bob Knight over the war on Christmas, reminding him that the world really hasn't changed that much. DeSantis announces his “Stop Woke Act,” as he continues his metamorphosis into Dollar Store Trump, Marc Lamont Hill stumps Christian Walker by asking for examples, and Tucker Carlson discusses Anarcho-Tyranny with King of the working class, Kyle Rittenhouse, plus, your IMs! 2739 - What You Need To Know For Your Future w/ James W. Russell

Sam hosts James W. Russell, public policy affiliate scholar at Portland State University, to discuss his recent book The Labor Guide to Retirement Plans: For Union Organizers and Employees, on the importance of fighting for good end-of-life security and how employers and banks have capitalized off of the switch from pensions to 401ks. Russell and Sam begin by working to define and differentiate these two retirement plans, tracing the surge in 401ks back to the 1981 decision from the Reagan Treasury Department to make 401ks a valid substitute for a defined-benefits pension plan, rather than an additional tactic, and exploring why neoliberalism sought the switch, giving flexibility to the employer while shifting all of the risk onto the shoulders of the employee. Next, they dive into the role of labor organizing in the fight for better retirements, exploring instances of solidarity against two-tiered plans for legacy and incoming workers, and how unions can fight against what has arguably been the largest expropriation of workers' income over the last three decades. They return to the topic of neoliberalism, diving into George W. Bush's failed attempts to privatize social security, and the failure of the successful attempts to privatize these institutions in Chile under a Milton-Friedman-Influenced Pinochet regime. They wrap up with the role of conservative think tanks in driving privatization of retirement plans, before looking at what we can do as individuals, and organized groups, in fighting for better and more available pension plans for American workers. Sam also covers Cuomo's corrupt book deal, LIU union-busting, and Fox News' personalities reacting to their leaked 1/6 texts, including the case of a missing Brian Kilmeade. And in the Fun Half: Sam and the MR crew cover Christian Walker's personal sacrifices for his wealth (just having to deal with Herschel Walker as his father), the devastation of Hawaii's primary water supplies at the hands of the U.S. Navy's waste, and Dave Rubin's wistful goodbye to California. Brian from Minneapolis calls in to discuss paramilitary terrorism against Zapatista farmers in Mexico, Stub Lord from Scottsdale chastises Matt and gives Sam some efficiency management tips, then Ben Shapiro reminds us of the classic Mandela effect that causes us to forget that the Loan Baron in Its a Wonderful Life was the hero all along. Stephen Crowder pivots perfectly from blatant racism to Omicron misinformation, and Nathan from Florida discusses the dumdum left's orbit and lack of organizing, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam breaks down what's to come in the week in news, from the continuing Build Back Better negotiations to updates on the court, labor, COVID and more! Sam is then joined by newly Twitch-banned Hasan Piker! He and the MR crew start off with Peter Doocy asking Jen Psaki about the war zone that is Christmas crime sprees as seen in the attack on the Fox News Christmas tree, before looking at the reactionary reporting on people leaving their jobs due to vaccine mandates, including a whopping 27 Air Force members. Next, they jump into the Meadows news, walking through the idiocy of turning over all of the relevant documents before refusing to testify, why Trump was able to scare him out of testifying, and the incredible 1/6 texts from notoriously reasonable characters Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, and Donald Trump Jr. pleading with Trump's Chief of Staff. Next, Hasan joins Sam for the first inaugural Crackers & Cheese segment (missing the cheese), as they explore Hasan's recent ban from Twitch, and how bringing the “C-word” into the category of bannable slurs capitulates to white fragility and identity politics by ignoring the importance of contextual systemic subjugation. From here, they cover the importance, in general, of Terms of Service, and of de-platforming in response to overreach, discussing how a lack of ToS tends to lead to Nazis, pedophiles, and/or nazi-pedophiles, before looking at how media can and cannot encourage shifts in cultural consciousness, the importance of media aligning with existing views on material reality and inequality, and how Right Wing astroturf campaigns brilliantly and destructively unite culture war and weirdly specific policy to capitalize on this. And in the Fun Half: The MR Crew takes on the importance of OSHA and disaster regulations in the wake of the Kentucky tornado and the multiple instances of employer-forced danger that resulted in countless deaths. Sam also gets the opportunity to differentiate types of inflation, and Danny from Culver City calls in to discuss the imprisonment of Daniel Baker, an anarchist who posted about armed defense of the Capitol after Jan 6th. 2737 - The Myth of the "Good War" w/ Elizabeth Samet

Sam and Emma host Elizabeth Samet, professor of English at West Point, to discuss her recent book Looking for the Good War: American Amnesia and the Violent Pursuit of Happiness, on the mythology behind the Americanized narrative of WWII, how it came to prevalence, and the role Tom Brokaw and Stephen Spielberg have to play. Professor Samet walks through the six myths she identifies throughout U.S. history, with the first – that the U.S. could not wait any longer to liberate the world from the growing threat of fascism and tyranny – starting to be manufactured as soon as the U.S. got its foot into the war, as she, Emma, and Sam dive into the isolationist nature of the US in the first few decades of the 20th Century, and the existing documents and pamphlets for soldiers attempting to revise this history to bolster their faith in the effort. Next, they look at the creation of a narrative of complete unity around this war effort in the wake of wars in the second half of the century, like Vietnam, which created division between the public and the military, which, along with a narrative exaggerating the sacrifices on our home front, worked to paint a picture of the Greatest Generation and their war as a collective American effort. They also cover the birth of the narratives of the U.S. as a liberator whose military will be greeted with open arms, which we would see repeated countless more times, most notably in the Iraq war, and the idea that this, like all U.S. wars, had a happy ending. This, at last, brings them to how these narratives were ultimately woven together, to create the final myth, which is that all of these narratives have been accepted and true since the beginning of the war. They explore how the baby boomer generation, through the works of Stephen Ambrose, Tom Brokaw, and Stephen Spielberg, among many others, revised and unified the narrative of their parents' generation to help a country whose confidence has been shaken to regain an earlier luster. They wrap up the interview by looking at the film noir cliché around WWII and its veterans, as well as looking at the current state of public opinion on our veterans, and how it maintains a bit of a contradiction on how we want to think about them. Sam and Emma also discuss the devastation of the tornado in Kentucky, its role as one more “once in a generation event” that's occurred this year, and the hypocrisy of libertarian ideology. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam dive into the announcement by the Biden admin that they would resume student debt collection, and the absurdity of a country that attempts to make a profit off of an educated populace, while Chris from Austin calls in to talk health policy, both federal and personal. They also look at Stuart Varney's coverage of the destruction of Seattle by a single city council member – Kshama Sawant – who helped bring about a $15 minimum wage, before moving onto the U.K. Court's decision regarding Julian Assange's extradition to the U.S., and contrast how it has been reported, from Joe Scarborough to Mehdi Hasan, before looking at Crowder capitalizing on the incredible masculinity he perceives emanating from Kyle Rittenhouse, and hearing Dan the Objectivist return to discuss how threats to well being aren't coercion, plus, your calls and IMs! This week we talk about abortion, Izzy took the 60 second rant segment really seriously and made it into a sort of poem, it's cringing but will make you laugh and we get a confession from Cal. This episode comes with a trigger warning as we appreciate abortion is an emotional topic for many people. This is not about whether abortion is right or wrong but we wanted to put the stories of people who have had an abortion at the forefront which is why we start with Cal sharing her own experience of having an abortion. We discuss some of the pro-life core arguments and discuss how we feel about these, plus we talk through the procedures recommended for safe abortions in case anyone needs to know or curious to find out. There is a lot of misinformation out there at the moment and we want to make sure the right information is out there for people so they can make informed choices. Information related to Texas law SB8, which went into effect on Sept 1, 2021 is below. The new Texas law is a "heartbeat law" and effectively prohibits all abortions in the state of Texas. When the Supreme Court declined to block the bill, it effectively killed Roe v. Wade. You should read Justice Sotomayor's dissent here. Read Stop Being Stupid About Abortion by Charlotte Shane. As always, these laws will have the most impact on the poor and undocumented people. On today's episode, Know Your Role(s) brings you One More Round with George and Dave as George cycles through his record collection alphabetically and Dave contemplates buying a kayak after the flooding of Hurricane Ida. On tap in this week's Bar Talk are Fall TV premieres, the US Open, and Lil Nas X's “Montero: The Debut” album release on September 17th. This week's game starts with the most important meal of the day as the fellas and producer Mary Bess compare HBO series to cereals from “Veep's” Honey Nut Cheerios to “True Blood's” Lucky Charms! George looks ahead to the holiday weekend and college football while Dave gets excited for the release of Paul Schrader's “The Card Counter,” starring the official boyfriend of “Know Your Role(s)” Oscar Isaac, on September 10th. In this week's Booth, producer Mary Bess' bad news takes us to Texas where reproductive rights are being challenged by a new piece of legislation, and we find some good news in Aurora, Colorado where three police officers and two paramedics will face criminal charges in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain.   Resources: Support reproductive rights activists and Texans in need via the Lilith Fund (lilithfund.org), the Whole Woman's Health Alliance (wholewomanshealthalliance.org), Jane's Due Process (janesdueprocess.org), the Afiya Center (theafiyacenter.org), and the Frontera Fund (fronterafundrgv.org), among others. Join the fight to defend black lives with groups like Color of Change (colorofchange.org) and the Movement for Black Lives (m4bl.org).   Hosted By: George Gordon & David Kleinman.  Produced By: Mary Bess Pritchett.
