It's the year 2090. There are signs that a pandemic is coming - a pandemic which will kill millions of innocent people - again. Because it's happened before. But this time, just maybe, we know what - or who - is causing it...and a chance to stop it. That's the setup for "Syndrome Johnny," a lost episode from a nearly-forgotten science-fiction anthology radio drama from 1953 called "Tales of Tomorrow." The television version of "Tales of Tomorrow," which actually came before the radio edition, is considered one of the first serious scifi video series. The TV edition spawned the radio offshoot, which hoped to fill the void of the recently-cancelled and now-classic series "Dimension X," adapting stories from Galaxy Magazine. Failing to find a sponsor, it only lasted a few months. This week, we bring you a Tale by one of the lesser known greats of 1950s science fiction, Frederik Pohl.  "The Tunnel Under the World" first appeared in Galaxy magazine in 1955, which Pohl himself would go on to edit from 1959 to 1969.  His career spanned nearly 75 years and saw him win many awards for his writing, including novels and, shortly before his death, his blog.  He won four Hugo awards and three Nebula awards, winning both for his seminal 1977 novel "Gateway". Frederik Pohl (1918-2013) recorded at the Octocon Science Fiction Convention, October 15-16, 1978. Interviewers: Richard Wolinsky, Richard A. Lupoff and Lawrence Davidson, for KPFA's Probabilities radio program. Digitized, remastered and re-edited February, 2021 by Richard Wolinsky. This interview has not been heard in any form since 1978. Frederik Pohl, who died in 2013 at the age of 93 in September, 2013, did almost everything in the world of science fiction, as a writer, an agent, and a magazine and book editor. He grew up in Brooklyn, began writing at an early age, and in his twenties was a member of a leftist group of science fiction writers known as The Futurians, publishing for pennies a word in the sf pulps of the era. In 1937, in order to make money, he became an agent, and two years later a pulp magazine editor himself, often buying his own stories along with collaborations with various other writers, all under pseudonyms. In the late 1960s, he became editor of Galaxy Magazine, and its sister publication, Worlds of If, and in the 1970s became the science fiction editor at Bantam Books which he left shortly before this interview. In the mid 1970s, Fred Pohl  emerged as one of science fictions pre-eminent novelists with Man Plus in 1976 and Gateway in 1977. In 1978, on the heels of novelist Damon Knight's memoir, The Futurians, he came out with his own memoir, The Way the Future Was. And that was where his career stood when the three of us interviewed him. We were all still new at interviewing, particularly in placement of the microphone. Fred Pohl's success continued for many years after this interview. Jem, published in 1979, won the National Book Award the only year there was an award for science fiction. The sequel to Gateway, Beyond the Blue Event Horizon was a finalist for both the Hugo and Nebula Awards in 1980. In all, there eventually were seven novels in the Gateway  (Heechee) series, and after 1979, all told, he wrote 17 more novels, the last being The Lives He Led, published in 2011, along with several collections, even more collaborations, and some non-fiction as well. At the time of his death at 93 in 2013, he was working on a second memoir, which has to date not been published. NOTES. Judy Lynn Del Rey was the sf editor at Ballantine Books starting in the early 1970s and soon had her own imprint, Del Rey Books (in collaboration with her husband, writer Lester Del Rey). Judith Merrill was a writer and anthologist, noted for her Year's Best SF Stories collections, which she edited from 1956 to 1968. John Michel was a key member of the Futurians who never fulfilled his promise. John W. Campbell was the editor of Astounding Stories, later Analog, from 1937 into the 1970s, and is credited with discovering such writers as Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein. His influence on science fiction was all-encompassing, even as his politics were, as Isaac Asimov quipped, somewhere to the right of Hitler. Horace Gold was the first editor of Galaxy, before Fred Pohl. It was the magazine that brought literary style into science fiction. Other names mentioned are Anthony Boucher and F. Episode 011 of the AboutSF podcast is a recording of Ian McDonald reading the Frederik Pohl short story “The Day the Icicle Works Closed,” which was first published in Galaxy Magazine, in February, 1960.  In that same year, the story was included in the Frederik Pohl short story collection The Man Who Ate the World.  Since then, it has been included in a number of anthologies of Mr. Pohl’s work, most recently in Platinum Pohl: The Collected Best Stories. Mr. McDonald was recorded reading “The Day the Icicle Works Closed” at the 2011 Campbell Conference, where he also received the 2011 John W. Campbell Memorial Award for his novel The Dervish House.  Ian McDonald is the author of a number of science fiction novels, including Brasyl, River of Gods, Cyberabad Days, Desolation Road, King of Morning, Queen of Day, Out on Blue Six, Chaga, and Kirinya.  His is a past winner of the Philip K. Dick Award, the BSFA Award, and the Hugo Award.  He has been nominated for the Nebula Award, and a Quill Book Award, and has had several nominations for the Arthur C. Clarke Award.

Landis reading the Frederik Pohl short story “The Deadly Mission of Phineas Snodgrass.”  “The Deadly Mission of Phineas Snodgrass” was first published in Galaxy Magazine in 1962, and has since been included in numerous collections of Mr. Pohl’s work.  Most recently, in 2005, the story was included in The Enchanter Completed: A Tribute Anthology for L. Sprague de Camp. Mr. Landis was recorded reading “The Deadly Mission of Phineas Snodgrass” at the 2011 Campbell Conference, where he also received the 2011 Theodore Sturgeon Award for his short story “The Sultan of the Clouds,” published in Asimov's Science Fiction.  Mr. Landis is a prolific writer of Science Fiction, having won a Nebula Award, two Hugo Awards and a Locus Award for his short fiction and novels.  He has also received two Rhysling Awards for his poetry, and his poetry collection Iron Angels was published by Van Zeno Press in 2009. Mon, Apr 07 2008 Mister Ron's Basement #1032 Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) and Max Adeler (Charles Heber Clark) engaged in a long-running feud, with each accusing the other of plagiarism more than once. Oddly enough, the two of them attacked each other indirectly in print, using names and circumstances that would be recognized by their targets. In our first piece from 1870, Twain attacks Adeler in the Galaxy Magazine in 1870 without mentioning him by name in 'A Literary Old Offender in Court with Suspicious Property in His Possession' Then we offer an 1879 Adeler tale, the first of at least three where a character named Abner Byng (Twain previously had used the pen name of 'Carl Byng') is painted as the world's biggest liar.
