If entrepreneurs are known for marching to a different beat, then Jeff Peterson is an improvisational maestro. DT fans may remember Jason's conversation with the CEO of Geneva Supply in episode 21, in which the two discussed growing and expanding that company's footprint. And did he ever! Just as that business started to get predictable, Jeff stumbled upon his next entrepreneurial challenge: Interstate Music. This week, we're revisiting Jeff's second appearance on Distribution Talk: The One Where Jeff Went All In to Turn Around a 75-Year-Old Music Retailer (even though the company languished in bankruptcy and the world paused for a pandemic). The opportunity to turn around a 75-year-old music retailer proved irresistible, and Jeff went all in — even though the company languished in bankruptcy and the world paused for a pandemic. He applied his extensive e-com knowledge and a lifelong affinity for live music to a new entrepreneurial challenge and has never once regretted taking on that challenge. While the purchase agreement included Interstate Music Supply's catalog of intellectual property, Jeff astutely excluded the company's physical inventory and brick-and-mortar footprint: The revamp opened Interstate up to new avenues for attracting customers and building brand loyalty. “There's big competitors out there that have been doing e-commerce music for a long time and doing it really well,” he says. “However, they're not selling to Amazon, they're not helping a manufacturer sell on a different platform in a different way. So that's our niche to them.”  CONNECT WITH JASON LinkedIn CONNECT WITH JEFF LinkedIn *** For full show notes and services visit: https://www.distributionteam.com Distribution Talk is produced by The Distribution Team, a consulting services firm dedicated to helping wholesale distribution clients remove barriers to profitability, generate wealth and achieve personal goals.    This episode was edited & mixed by The Creative Impostor Studios.  Special thanks to our sponsor for this episode: INxSQL Distribution Software, integrated distribution ERP software designed for the wholesale and distribution industry.

Episode 211 is the farewell episode for It's No Secret with Dr T., and I thought I would bring back my good friend, previous guest and long-term supporter of the podcast Jeff Peterson to help my say goodbye.  Jeff Peterson is the owner of Geneva Supply and was a guest on the show back on Episode 017 with Bill Davis, titled Drive Your Business.  In addition to bidding farewell, I did manage to draw some more business wisdom from Jeff before we hung up the microphone.  Today we discuss: Working with Amazon Helping manufacturers with Content & Brand Management  What takes to get noticed Why entrepreneurship is bullshit Intrapreneurship - the creative entrepreneurial spirit within an organisation Why you should not ask family and friends what they think of your ideas, just remember the bad singers you've seen on American Idol, someone told them they were good at singing.  Why you should have a business card. "When you're living in a world where there are many generations that are still in the working community, you cannot go hardcore just one way when it corms to networking".   BIZTANK & Kids in The Tank It's about career exploration. School is not connecting kids to the reality of life or the career paths that they will be heading into very soon after school. It's about exposing them to new possibilities. The key is to empower kids that their career decision is their decision. It's not their parents or school guidance councillor.  We need to open and expose their minds to other careers. Final Tip Don't shy away from people you know and enjoy being with and talking too. Don't think about what you're going to get to from it, just enjoy the pleasure of peoples company. Get to know people just to get to know people, nurture friendships in an old-school, business card sort of way. Don't focus on all the social media and quick online fixes (number of friends, likes, etc.). Build real relationships.  Farewell It's kind of sad to bid farewell, but you've got to know when it's time to walk away, and now is the right time.  I'd like to thank everyone that has been a guest on It's No Secret with Dr T. and all the people that have been part of the 55,000 downloads over the past 211 episodes.  There is no longer any need to write a podcast review for It's No Secret, but I do encourage you to write reviews for your other favourite podcasts. “You can’t chase every single need, but when there’s a consistency from one contractor or one customer to the other, that becomes an opportunity. And if there’s a trust that you have built, the opportunity turns into profitability.” ~Jeff Peterson, Geneva Supply, Inc. How does an affable guy who started out in the liquor industry become a leader in e-commerce strategy and fulfillment? When you meet Jeff Peterson, CEO and co-founder of Geneva Supply, Inc. out of Delavan, WI, the answer is clear: How could he not?!   “I always wanted to own a sports bar…” And with that, Jeff’s deep into the story of his unorthodox route into distribution. Although the twists and turns are many, the common throughline is his undeniable skill at building relationships.  After selling the bar, Jeff went searching for his next challenge when the opportunity found him. “One of the guys that I knew, I was helping manage his band and he was the Greenlee Textron rep for Wisconsin…” That connection lead to a sales job with a family-owned tool distributorship and Jeff soon found himself driving to job sites in a company pickup truck selling items to contractors that he himself had no idea how to use. “Within six months, I ended up being the number two outside salesperson for this company.”   Jeff’s ability to balance his inexperience with honesty in those early years made all the difference in his career. “I think the reason was because I went in there and asked a ton of questions and when they [contractors] asked me questions, I was honest with them. When I didn’t have an answer, I followed up with them.” It’s a simple but crucial effort he credits with his success. “You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room...but you’ve got to be the smartest person knowing they need an answer.” He became so adept at finding answers that the family-owned distributorship he helped grow had no choice but to fire him and his future business partner. Once again, however, the relationships he nurtured while working for someone else came through to form the foundation for what is now Geneva Supply.  These days, Jeff’s still the guy finding answers and providing strategies for his clients e-commerce distribution challenges. Geneva has flourished as a one-stop shop for building brand strategy and supply chain infrastructure. “I was just telling our team this morning...Geneva Supply is a marketing company that does logistics.” The company’s gearing up to expand beyond the coasts, giving Jeff more opportunities to cultivate relationships internationally.  Listen in to find out how Jeff got Geneva Supply up and running in a day (there’s an airplane hanger involved!) and what’s next for e-commerce. *** Distribution Talk is produced by The Distribution Team, a consulting services firm dedicated to helping wholesale distribution clients remove barriers to profitability, generate wealth and achieve personal goals.    This episode was edited & mixed by The Creative Impostor Studios. Amazon Adjust Bids By Placement

Amazon Bid+ is being replaced with the 'adjust bids by placement' feature. With Bid+, you could only set a 50% increase for the top of search (first page) placement. 'Adjust bids by placement' feature lets you set a 0% to 900% increase for both the top of search (first page) and product pages. Placements are places across Amazon where your ads may appear. Currently, you can differentiate your bids and view performance of your sponsored products ads by three placement groups: top of search (first page), rest of search, and product pages. The top of search (first page) refers to the sponsored products ads at the top row on the first page of search results. Rest of search refers to sponsored products ads shown in the middle or at the bottom of search results, and all sponsored products ads in the second page of search results and beyond. Product pages refers to sponsored products placements on the product details page, and certain other placements off search results like the add-to-cart page. In addition to selecting a bidding strategy, you can also set different bids by placement. You can enter a percent increase to your base bid for two placements: top of search (first page) and product pages. When you do this, your bids will be increased by the specified amounts when your ads compete for opportunities on those placements. Your base bid will apply to “rest of search”. You can enter up to a 900% increase to (or 10 times of) your base bid. Beard also airs his grievances, so be sure to listen to the end to find out who he decided to call out this week! I interviewed the kids from the Kids in the Tank on episode 13 and on the same day I was interviewing them, Bill Davis was their guest for an upcoming show and this is how I happen to have these two amazing business minds together in one place. Today we discuss: Learning how to fight with passion and enthusiasm Understanding goals and expectations Why a book is written to spark the fire, not build the embers The importance of your brand Brand recognition, innovation and technology Think ahead about your brand and where it’s going Build your company on flexibility You’ve got to be willing to fail publicly, but if you have passion for what you do you will be successful long-term. Business Tips JEFF: Your greatest strength is to know your weaknesses and to surround yourself with people to fill those weaknesses. Therefore hire people capable of taking your job from you, because this will drive you to perform better. We all need to be pushed. Self Reflection – After any meeting or interaction, always ask, “how did I handle that situation”? Also ask you team the give you honest feedback if they were present. Business Tips BILL: Product is the most important thing in your business, so always provide a quality product. Treat your BRAND like it’s a child. Worry about how it is being perceived, its image, reputation, who it’s hanging around and whom it’s being seen with. Always make logical and defendable decisions, because these will pass the test of time and you’ll be consistent with your decision-making. Monday Morning Tip: Let your mind wonder (morning shower, walking etc), because your mind will tell you what it wants you to know, but only when there’s nothing else going on.
