Chargeback prevention is the best way to handle chargebacks. The more common solution is chargeback mitigation after they've gone through, but this method involves paying the fee (even when you avoid paying out the refund) AND those chargeback cases that you've won still count against your chargeback ratio.Prevent chargebacks with these 3 solutions you can easily set up today. Once you set them up, they're fairly hands-off, so you can sit back and watch your business grow safely.Interested in chargeback alerts? Fraudology is presented by Spec. Check out their no-code platform you can implement to start fighting fraud today! As a follow-up to the conversation with Frank & Mary Ann on Tuesday's episode, Karisse talks about two of the predictions that she contributed to their combined list for 2023. Did these two predictions prove to impact the online fraud industry as much as expected? Or could they become more of an issue in the 2nd half of the year? The two main topics of this podcast are: The 2023 Visa Rule "Update" referred to as "Compelling Evidence 3.0" and the current status** of the impact to CNP merchants since going into affect in April 2023. And the insular fraud attacks that leverage cyber skills (hacking, data breaches, DDoS attacks etc) with financial fraud methods. (**Since recording this episode, more information has been provided to show that while some merchants aren't seeing much of an impact, others are seeing more drastic changes to their fraud chargeback win-rates than was represented in this episode. The reasons behind the inconsistencies still need to be investigated, but we'll try to provide an even newer update once one is available.)Fraudology is hosted by Karisse Hendrick, a fraud fighter with decades of experience advising hundreds of the biggest ecommerce companies in the world on fraud, chargebacks, and other forms of abuse impacting a company's bottom line. [15:50] - The incremental steps are common in romance scams as well. [16:51] - Michelle describes what a Chargeback scam is and how it began with Venmo, but shouldn't work with Zelle. [18:59] - Don't send money back if you receive money by accident from a stranger. [21:03] - There are safety nets in place to ensure accidents don't happen. Don't be hasty. [22:42] - If you don't use a payment app or don't understand how to use it appropriately, don't have it on your phone. [24:35] - The apps are not a bank. They do not come with the same kind of protections. [26:52] - Payment apps are never going to be the preferred method of payment from any legitimate company. [28:27] - It is always a red flag when someone is trying to get you away from the website or legitimate platform. [30:48] - Look closely at websites and reverse lookup images on Google. [32:23] - Airbnb and vacation listings are common scams. [34:31] - When it comes to property listings, there are steps you can take to ensure its legitimacy. [36:37] - Alternatively, if something is listed underpriced, that could also be a red flag. [39:29] - Airbnb began as shared space rentals only. [41:10] - Make all your payments from the platform. Avoid third party payments. [42:57] - Prevention is best. Once you're in this situation, you are likely out of your money. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Fraudology is presented by https://seon.io/ (SEON). A follow-up story to Ep. 110 (7 July 2022): Merchants have reported answers to some of their questions after speaking w/ Visa about the upcoming Visa Chargeback Rule changes set to go into effect in April 2023 & Karisse asks for specific clarification. Sometimes it's just as important to hear what someone doesn't say, as much as what they do say. A brilliant listener provided some great insight into one of the newer fraud methods being reported by enterprise merchants that were mentioned on Ep. 116 (27 July 2022) MasterCard has announced rolling out a BNPL payment option to ALL cardholders & merchants that use/accept MasterCard. But, who's paying for the service fees & can merchants opt out, especially if their AOV is low? Article for reference: https://www.digitalcommerce360.com/2022/08/12/mastercard-faces-retailer-backlash-over-buy-now-pay-later/ Fraudology is hosted by Karisse Hendrick, a fraud fighter with decades of experience advising hundreds of the biggest ecommerce companies in the world on fraud, chargebacks, and other forms of abuse impacting a company's bottom line. Fraudology is presented by https://seon.io/ (SEON). 3 weeks ago, Visa made an announcement....that they were going to make an announcement about chargeback rule changes for 2023 on 2 webinars beginning the following week. In their pre-announcement, they stated the rule changes would be a welcome change for online merchants, who have been long plagued with 1st party fraud ("friendly fraud") chargebacks, that continue to rapidly increase. There was a buzz & excitement among enterprise merchants and online payments & fraud experts, hopeful that this information would reduce 1st party fraud chargebacks in the eco-system, and bring more fairness to CNP merchants in the chargeback process. But, after the webinars commenced, merchants were confused. Did they understand them correctly? Will this be the game-changing "solution" to reducing this issue as promised? In this episode, Karisse puts on her chargeback nerd "hat" and provides a deep dive into the rule changes as she understood them. Will these changes benefit merchants in a reduction of lost revenue due to friendly/1st party fraud? How will these changes impact chargeback recovery (representment) rates? Is Visa's solution that they suggest, the only way to solve this issue? *All information within this episode are Karisse's interpretations of what was shared by the Visa Risk team on the webinar for MRC members on 6-23-22, and the public-facing webinar on 6-28-22; all opinions & open questions are her own or were shared with her by fraud & payments professionals for enterprise-level merchants requesting anonymity. For the rule change information straight from Visa, the MRC webinar can be accessed by MRC members in their member library or will be available on the Visa Merchant website soon. For questions, contact your acquirer or your Visa representative (if you have one). If a representative from Visa is willing to join Karisse on a future episode of Fraudology to correct any of this information and/or answer additional questions, please reach out via LinkedIn. Fraudology is presented by https://seon.io/ (SEON). A lot has happened in fraud & payments this past week! We can only fit so much into one episode, so today, Karisse will talk about: A recap of the NRF Protect conference in Cleveland, OH; Karisse will provide highlights & takeaways from the sessions focused on online fraud, presented by CardNotPresent .com Provide answers to the final 2 questions from the MRC Webinar she presented with Uri Arad at Identiq; One question asks about freight forwarders & refund fraud; the other asks about chargeback mitigation strategies for a BNPL A bit of an overview on the new chargeback rules announced by Visa to go into effect April 2023. We are still trying to nail down some specifics & hope to get to ask a few questions of Visa. But in the meantime, Karisse talks about what she knows at this point about the rules changes, and shares some of her own concerns about their solutions provided for 1st party fraud reduction. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Air Conditioner Repair, published by Zvi on June 27, 2022 on LessWrong. A thing happened to me, seemed worth sharing. What Happened A few weeks ago, the in-wall air conditioner in our bedroom ceased to function. Troy Barnes was unavailable, so instead we talked to the super, he recommended a company called Amhac, we ignored normative determinism (e.g. “Am a hack”) and called them. They charged a rather large amount simply to come out and take a look, with a diagnostic fee and also a noticeably generous per-hour fee. Then, a few days before they were supposed to show up, our other in-wall air conditioner sprung a leak – or rather, the leak got big enough that we noticed it – and the super advised us we had to shut it down until it was fixed, but he thought that one would be a simple fix plus the addition of a failsafe that should have been there to stop the leak; he wasn't sure about the bedroom one. The repairmen showed up, but they hadn't completed the necessary certificate of insurance to be let into the building – this policy is even more annoying and friction generating than it sounds – and we had to reschedule while they sorted this out. A number of rather hot nights later, they managed to come in. Their report was that both air conditioners were unfixable. The one in the bedroom was completely shot. The one in the living area was fixable in theory, they said, but due to some EPA regulation it wasn't possible to fix it. They could send over a contract for the new units, it would be. $28,000. I Googled for various new air conditioners, and couldn't find ones that would be that expensive. The guy explained I would need two of each unit, for four units total. I asked some trusted friends about all this, as well as the super, and all agreed a second quote would be a very good idea. I asked the super who else had done work in the building, and he remembered M.LaPenna Refrigeration, Inc. They charged by the hour as well, but without a ‘diagnostic fee' up front. Which on reflection should have been a hint about the first company. If you're charging for the labor, as you do, starting with minute one, why is there an additional diagnostic fee? It doesn't actually make any sense. This time, they took care of the certificate of insurance as fast as the insurance company could handle it, then got a guy out to look the same day that got approved. Almost as if things were urgent. Different attitude. Instead of two workers, this time there was one, who was keen to explain to me what was going on as he worked. The super was busy, so I explained the situation as best I could and he got to poking around in various places. Two hours later, both air conditioners were working again, and they sent out for the part to install the failsafe. I asked the man if there was any way the other repairmen could have made an honest mistake saying the units needed to be replaced. His answer: “No.” If I hadn't checked, I wonder how much they finally would have tried to get me for, but I'm sure it was a lot. What To Do About That First Company? I'm not sure. I emailed my contact to say what happened and suggested a full refund would be appropriate. The response was that the person was on vacation for weeks (with no warning). Which did not endear me. If it was one unit, I could imagine an honest mistake. But it wasn't. It was two units, with distinct setups, experiencing distinct problems. This was not a mistake. What am I supposed to do now? Chargeback? Report to better business bureau? Report to someone else? Do something else? What's the responsible thing to do here? I don't know. Thoughts and Takeaways What about takeaways in general? First of all, get a second opinion. Do not trust contractors of any kind, who you don't have damn good reason to trust, who tell you that you need something massiv...

Moving right along with diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) month, my guest this week refers to herself as a global citizen with a broad range of diverse experience and an entrepreneurial career that all started with one question: “Software outsourcing is huge. Do you want to start a business?”As I'm sure you can imagine, the answer was yes, and this led Chargeback Gurus Founder and CEO Srii Srinivasan down a wildly successful entrepreneurial path that all started with a diamond merchant. In this episode, we discussed not only her business model, go-to-market strategy and niche offering, we also talk a lot about what she does proactively to ensure DEI in her organization. When asked what her definition of diversity is, Srii explains that “it's truly about radical acceptance in all our life experiences, no matter who it is or what they experienced. Diversity by itself will not work. You also have to have equity and inclusion, which means voices are heard and met with acceptance.”Among the many things we discuss around DEI in this episode, one of the most interesting to me is this concept around diversity including not only the employees, but the customers stakeholders and investors as well. It's a concept that starts from the top down and must include every touchpoint the company has. In order to make it truly successful, DEI has to be in the corporate DNA.Tune in to hear us discuss important best practices like writing a diverse job description, asking questions and actively listening to the answers, hiring and training leaders on the importance of DEI and creating successful DEI best practices in a virtual company culture.

#194: pt.2 Lease Options And How To Use Them Scenarios in which you want to use lease options vs contract for deed. Avoid hefty title transfer fees and tax. Forfeiture process/time frame to extensive vs eviction process. Able to control the property without ownership. Less down, option deposit and/or security deposit no big down payment. Example of wholesaling a Lease Option- SFH worth 550K Buy on lease option for 505K with 2K down. Find a tenant buyer for 522K with 17K down. With 2K monthly lease payment. Take 15K as a wholesale fee. Master lease option example- best to use on investment properties with value add opportunity. Where you have a lease with the owner and can sublease the units. Owner is responsible for capital repairs/expenses, taxes, and insurance. The owner no longer has to manage the property or hire a management company. Example 20 unit apartment building, 10- 2beds 10- 1beds by a university. 150K in deferred maintenance. Owner will have a large tax consequence when he sells because he depreciated it over 27.5 years. The heirs want him to hold the property till death to avoid tax consequences. Rents are below market and can be increased. Charge pet rents. Chargeback sewer/water/garbage to tenants, add storage units, ect. Offer to pay 80K as option deposit.

In today's podcast we are discussing .... What should you know before you start an e-commerce store. What platform are you going to use? And if you are going to need a merchant account does that platform support your business type. We speak to business owners all the time and they have built a website only to find out the platform does not support their particular business type for payments. You might have to pay half a percent up to 2% to use an outside service. I always say do your homework before you begin, ask questions. WordPress is agnostic and you can use any payment processor - many of the platforms have limited what types of businesses they can approve for merchant services. Also - will you need a fraud solution like 3D secure, Chargeback services, a gateway -and you need to make sure they are all compatible with your shopping cart. Will you be running a subscription or recurring billing - Listen in and watch for more episodes about e-commerce from B2B Vault, follow us on social media or your favorite podcast network!
Hey, this is Allen Kopelman. Welcome you to another episode of the B2B Vault Podcast. So today we are going to talk about chargebacks. Chargeback is a crazy thing that businesses have to deal with. There's nothing worse than getting that letter through email, fax or, the mail, and you have a chargeback to deal with. So what is going on with chargebacks lately? Chargebacks are a crazy thing cause EMV, the chip card was supposed to kind of solve that problem and the card present business. And you know, a lot of that fraud started because of the increased use of chips, sorta pushing off into the noncard present arena. And then with the onset of COVID, we saw the growing need for noncard present services and retail businesses with QR codes and different things like that. A lot of card-present businesses are getting chargebacks with websites. You know, it's easy, easier to work with chargebacks because there's more tracking. There are quite a few different services. You can link to your website. You know, as far as that goes, you can link to your 3d secure. Which we're going to talk about more in another couple of podcasts that we're going to do. You can sign up for different services where they monitor your chargebacks and help you fight the chargebacks. If the person needs to get a return, you can return the money before the chargeback hat. There's a lot of interesting things. We were working with low-risk merchants, high-risk merchants, e-commerce, you know, strip clubs, nightclubs, but in the card-present arena. One of the things that make our service different than the services that you normally get through these chargeback companies is they don't work with card-present businesses, and that's where chargeback rescue comes in. We work with a lot of nightclubs and a lot of businesses where they're doing high ticket transactions and getting chargebacks. You know, most of them friendly fraud, the person's just trying to get out of paying for it. So what do we do? We make sure that you get your chargeback, um, you know, in your email or on your fax or through a portal. And then, you know, you get the receipts together, we send them over to us and then we help you put together the, we help you put together the letter that gets sent back to the chargeback company and because chargebacks have been changing and we've seen a big increase in chargebacks in the last three to six months and he keeps going and going. So if you need help with chargebacks, we help you. And on your website, one of the things that we're showing is that we help you review your, um, we help you review your, all your, all of your, um, policies on your website because you can't stop someone from doing a chargeback. But what we can do is we can slow it down. We can make it so that you're the one in control. You're in your favor, you know, do you need to have all sales final on your receipts? You know, so take a look @ chargebackrescue.com. If it's something that you need for your business, contact us, book an appointment, fill out the contact form and we'll help you out. Again. This is Alan Kopelman with the B2B vault, and I hope you enjoyed this episode. Listen to us on your favorite podcast network and click the follow button. Thank you.
