Devon Harris is a female tech leader for OberaConnect based in Fairhope, Alabama. It's a company she started with her father and now includes her sister. Their growth has been intense, fueled by the rise in demand for tech services by small businesses and regional and local governement clients and Devon and her team's remarkable commitment to client relationships. All companies claim relationships are key to business - I've heard it a thousand times - but OberaConnect takes it to a new level. While sitting across from me in the studio, I got the sense that what Devon and her team do regarding relationships is indeed different. Meet Devon, hear her story, hear me argue that the solutions technology claims to offer are now null and void - there is no longer any convenience in tech - and her reply. OberaConnect - 251.308.4592

Devon Harris is an original member of the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team and captain of the 1992 and 1998 teams. He's a 3-time Olympian, and he achieved something that he could only have dreamed of having been brought up in Kingston, Jamaica. And yes, Devon and his teammates were the inspiration for the movie Cool Runnings, which if you're like me, you probably grew up watching on loop over and over and over again. We talk about that a little bit in today's conversation. Most of today's conversation is about Devon's perspective on the culture in Jamaica and how that leads to great performers and great athletes. We talk about Devon's own perspective and how he had naivete, and his teammates probably had naivete, to achieve something that they could have only dreamt of where they were going to compete in the Olympics. He is someone who is philosophical, he is thoughtful, and he has a military background which he's going to share greatly served him and helped him when it came time for the Olympics. And so, this is conversation that gets deep into themes like confidence and themes like greatness. Devon is a motivational speaker, he thinks deeply and thinks in ways that might be new to you and I think will be helpful to you. Devon had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “There is nothing glamorous about a bobsled” (5:35). “Other people have done it before so I should be able to figure out how to do it” (6:00). “If I die, I die. But I'm going” (7:25). “Every time we set out to do something amazing, great, different, there is a certain amount of fear with it” (7:40). “Courage is being scared to death but doing the thing anyway” (8:15). “I could not allow that fear to stop me, so I went for it” (9:05). “Anyone who has achieved something great and out of the box experiences some level of delusion” (13:15). “There's a certain level of delusion, but it's founded on the experience and the knowledge and the work that you did before” (14:55). “You can always learn new skills” (16:10). “You have to be willing to acknowledge that you don't know so you can learn” (17:50). “We [Jamaicans] feed off the success of our compatriots” (23:20). “There's a kind of defiance that's embedded in us as Jamaicans” (26:25). “No task is too difficult; no obstacle is too great” (29:35). “It was the army experience that I relied on to get through those early days” (31:50). “Adversity allows you to grow. Adversity allows you to be inventive and be creative” (35:05). “Once you learn to deal with adversity in one area of your life, it translates into another area” (35:50). “I never could have imagined, coming from where I'm coming from, that you could have a movie made about a part of my life” (42:35). “I don't know if they really captured the hardships we experienced trying to get to the Olympic games” (44:05). Additionally, you can find everything you need to know about Devon on his website. You can also find the link to his foundation, Keep on Pushing, here. Are you keen to join the dots between parenting and activism? Want to grow a beautiful parallel paradigm in and through and with the yoof? I'm not a parent, but I am someone who believes that our “impact” starts at home; that the work of our times begins with ourselves and the beings in our orbit. So I reached out to one of the greatest women I know who also happens to be a parenthood black belt. Her name is Devon Harris and she's here to school us in Aware Parenting, which is a thrillingly disruptive alternative to parenting-as-usual. Devon is a parenting coach, consultant and mother who helps just as many kiddos as she does adult people, because the Aware Parenting approach is relevant to everybody – especially, as I discovered, to our petulant civilisation that's stuck somewhere been the terrible twos and teenage angst. We talk about compassion and non-punitive discipline, power reversal games and listening partners, community childcare and schools as feedlots. I loved this conversation and feel great about bringing it to Reskillience – and grateful to Devon for being such a wise and hilarious guest. Syd, Devon's kid, was also hanging out as we recorded so you'll have the pleasure of hearing from him too. Success Tips from an Olympian - INTERVIEW Devon Harris, member of the Jamaican Bob Sled Team's debut in the 1988 Winter Olympic Games Calgary, Alberta. Hear his story as Devon reveals success tips you can apply for reaching your dreams.
In today's episode, Bill talks with a good friend, three-time Olympian, Speaker, and Author, Devon Harris, about how and where he started, setting big goals, and developing the right mindset. Devon also shares how he accomplished goal after goal and still pushes for his dream to inspire others to reach for theirs by speaking about his life and journey on stage. Born on Christmas Day, 1964, Devon Harris was raised in the violent ghetto environment of Olympic Gardens in Kingston, Jamaica. The greatest gift he ever received was the belief that a positive attitude and a never say die philosophy would carry him farther than a sense of injustice and a heart filled with anger. Devon Harris graduated from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England and received a Queen's Commission in December 1985, and served in the Jamaica Defense Force officer corps until December 1992 when he retired as a Captain. Encouraged by his commanding officer, Devon tried out for and was selected to the first Jamaican bobsled team. The team competed in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary, Canada, and their exploits inspired the Disney blockbuster movie Cool Runnings. The Keep On Pushing Foundation, which he founded in 2006, aims to support and enhance the education of kids in disadvantaged communities by providing practical solutions to the challenges that are preventing them from getting educated. Through the Keep On Pushing Foundation, Devon also works with Right to Play as an athlete ambassador. He supports Right to Play's efforts in using sport and play in refugee camps around the world to enhance child development and build community capacity. In this Audio Signals episode, we again turn our attention to space. Just like our early ancestors and those who came after them, humanity has always been fascinated by the space above — well, all around — our Pale Blue Dot, which we call Earth. We made up most of the stories, some were fantastic, and some were almost true, but lately, technology has allowed us to listen and watch the stories it shares with us.We are joined for the 3rd time by our friends, space journalist Matthew Williams and we talk about exoplanets. What are they? Why are we talking so much about them, and what is their role in our search for alien life? Of this and so much more we talk about, we also made a big announcement: a new podcast show is joining the ITSPmagazine Podcast Network, and if you guessed that, Matt will be the host — well, you guessed right! We are very excited to welcome Matt to the family, and we cannot wait to hear all the stories he will tell us with his notable guests. Devon Harris is an athlete, a member of the first Jamaican bobsleigh team, a captain of the 1992 and 1998 teams, and a three-time Olympian. Before joining the Jamaican Defence Force, Devon Harris grew up in a modest neighbourhood in Kingston, Jamaica, and graduated from the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, England. Even though his dream to make it in the sport seemed like a pipe dream, Harris found a way to make it happen through drive and determination. His sports accomplishments with the Jamaican bobsleigh team inspired the "Cool Runnings" blockbuster Disney film. Devon's trademark courage has made him a successful international motivational speaker. Around the world, Devon Harris spreads his "Keep on pushing" philosophy, which has helped professionals from multiple Fortune 100 companies in various industries, as well as non-profit organisations, schools and universities. Ideal personal responsibility for these uncontrollable experiences of you deciding how you're going to deal with things and pick yourself a result is to think clearly even understeer stress. This is a thing you have to master as it can take time, but it's definitely worth doing. Look at someone who inspires you, and if they have done it, so why cant you? That's a piece of great advice once we have that in our heads. In sales, persistence and urgency are critical to our success, but we also need to learn from our mistakes, keep learning and growing, and go build results. Part of the thing is that we are making progress and celebrating small wins along the way so that we know we've travelled the path to the best we can beWith everyone I speak to and including myself, I do work. I love to do this, but it does take work and massive effort to do what we love to do to get into our FLOW states. So IF HE CAN'T DO IT, SO CAN I; find someone that inspires you. Find your passion, work hard, visualise it bring your heart to it and have that staying power resilience - KEEP ON PUSHING. Jason Cooper Website: https://www.jasoncooper.io/ Im Jason Cooper. Devon Harris is a founding member of the first Jamaican bobsled team, which competed in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary, Canada. Their exploits inspired the Disney movie Cool Runnings. Devon competed again in 1992 and 1998 as captain of the Olympic teams. His very early years were spent in rural Jamaica with his grandmother, an amazing storyteller. Her stories had a great impact on him, especially those about soldiers and their extraordinary abilities. He then moved to Kingston, Jamaica to live with his Dad and attend school. He describes it as a challenging, rough, violent, ghetto environment. Early on, Devon focused on school and sports as he knew that excelling in these areas was his ticket out of the ghetto. At 15, he discovered the Olympics ABC Wide World of Sports series on TV. “When you think of Olympic athletes, I think of these superhuman beings. What I saw in those series were very average people but they had extraordinary dreams. And they had an equally extraordinary desire to make those dreams a reality. So that's when it dawned on me, wow, anybody could become an Olympian, within reason you need a talent. But outside of that, if you dare to dream that extraordinarily, then backed up that dream with work ethic, sacrifice, and commitment. That's when I decided that I wanted to become an Olympian.” Of course, bobsledding was not on Devon's radar as his dream Olympic sport. Listen to our conversation to learn how that came to be. While Cool Runnings tells the story of how the original bobsledding team was formed, Devon shared that the movie is highly fictional. Today, Devon is a motivational speaker, author, and philanthropist. He shares his lessons about persistence over obstacles to living one's best life. He wrote a children's book Yes, I Can, and a semi-autobiographical book, Keep on Pushing Hot Lessons from Cool Runnings. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Devon's amazing journey: Devon is a graduate of the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England. He served as an officer in the Jamaica Defense Force retiring as a captain. He is a philanthropist creating the Keep On Pushing Foundation, which supports the education of kids in disadvantaged areas and his original schools in Jamaica. Member of the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team, Devon tells us how resilience has played a fundamental role in his life.GuestDevon HarrisOn Twitter
They did not do it because they thought it would be funny. Four members of the Jamaica Defense Force did it as a statement of pride and determination. Dudley Stokes, Devon Harris, Michael White and Caswell Allen traveled from their tropical island to snowy Canada hoping to make it into the 1988 Winter Olympics. Miraculously, they qualified. When Caswell Allen was injured 3 days prior to the start of the Olympics, he was replaced by Chris Stokes, who was only in Canada to support his brother Dudley. Smaller than the state of Connecticut, Jamaica is not a wealthy island. The men had to appeal to other teams for basic equipment in order to compete. But as the Olympics are forever a celebration of global cooperation, the other nations were happy to loan them what they needed. When the United States ice hockey team was eliminated, American TV stations needed to fill airtime and chose to focus on the Jamaican bobsled team. “Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, its bobsled time! Cool runnings!” The first run ended poorly when Dudley Stokes jumped into the bobsled and the push-bar broke, resulting in the Jamaican team coming in third from last. The team ranked next-to-last on their second run due to White remaining nearly upright through the first corner as he struggled to crouch down properly in his seat. After a blistering fast start on their third run, the Jamaican bobsled careened into the wall of the track and flipped over on top of the team at 85 miles per hour. Bruised and battered, the four men climbed out, walked with the bobsled to the end of the track, then picked it up and carried it off. The crowd went wild. Did the Jamaican team call it quits? No, they did not. The four qualified again for the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. The following year, Disney released Cool Runnings, a comedy film inspired by the team's experience in the 1988 Games. In the 1994 Olympics* in Lillehammer, Norway, the four Jamaicans finished ahead of the United States, Russia, Italy, France and Australia. At the 2000 World Push in Monaco the Jamaican team won the gold medal. You will never become good at something unless you are willing to be bad at first. But if you stay with it, things will be fine in the end. If things aren't fine, it's not the end. Roy H. Williams *In case you were wondering why we had Winter Olympics in 1992 and again just 2 years later in 1994, it was because the International Olympic Commission decided to separate the Summer and Winter Games and place them in alternating even-numbered years. 1994 was the year that decision was implemented.
To celebrate the holiday season, we decided to bring back a few familiar guests to discuss foundations they have either founded or help run. We hope the holiday spirit moves our Spotlight listeners into a giving mood to support these great causes! Note: All of these foundations can be found under the "Support Our Friends" tab at www.themorningspotlight.com! Start Day One Foundation - Ricardo Zulueta, Jr. (Founder) The founders of Start Day One, Ricardo & Kristen Zulueta, have been supporting suicide prevention awareness with their apparel brand, which has the mission to inspire and motivate people to live life without regret and accept challenges worth the risk. Ricardo has personally experienced the loss of his oldest brother from suicide, which is why they are genuinely passionate about their mission. According to their philosophy, true prevention is not waiting for someone to reach out or show symptoms of suicidal tendencies. It is more effective to proactively help people stop complaining and taking life for granted in the first place. People don't need help because they are depressed or suicidal. They need help that's WHY they're depressed or suicidal. Depression is not the cause, it is merely the result. https://startdayone.org/ founder@fukittclothing.com Keep on Pushing Foundation - Devon Harris, OLY (Founder) The Keep On Pushing Foundation is a federally recognized 501(c) 3 non-profit organization founded in 2006 by former Jamaican bobsled team captain, Devon Harris. The foundation was started as a result of Devon's commitment to do whatever it takes to nourish the bodies and minds of the children in his old neighborhood-the Olympic Gardens area of Kingston, and elsewhere around the world, as Devon firmly believes they have the same potential for success as he did. The majority of the children in Olympic Gardens qualify for assistance from the Keep on Pushing Foundation. Our client-base is primarily underemployed or unemployed residents who live in a community which is prone to politically motivated and gang related outbreaks of violence. Generally speaking, students are performing well below the required standard. Some display traits of short attention span, listlessness, aggression, fatigue, irregular attendance and unpunctuality. It was discovered that their under-achievement and poor behavior was as a result of the lack of a proper meal to start the day. Hope is the life-blood of possibilities. In nourishing the minds and bodies of these “at risk” youths, the Keep on Pushing Foundation is assisting them in getting a good education and therefore giving them hope and the ability to explore and take advantage of opportunities that would otherwise pass them by. https://keeponpushing.org/ devon@keeponpushing.org Project Kind - Monica Dema (Advisory Board Member) From its inception, Jenny DePaul—founder and CEO of Project Kind—set out to help those that are less fortunate. Bringing peanutbutter jelly sandwiches to Newark, NJ, was just the start. Creating Kindness Notes and packing that into each sandwich bag let her new friends know that they are worthy of love and reminded them of it long after the sandwich was eaten. With the help of sponsors and affiliates around the world, Project Kind reaches more people in need than ever—and will not stop. https://www.projectkind123.org/ projectkind123@projectkind123.org Follow us on Instagram: @TheMorningSpotlight Email us at: themorningspotlight@gmail.com www.themorningspotlight.com
