Podcaster: Jeff Peterson, Host of https://fuelingthetank.com/ (FuelingThe Tank) Grow as a podcaster I feel the most important part is to know what it is that you want your podcast to be. What is your purpose? What is it that is going to entertain you? Because that's what's going to bring your passion out. Go out and do it and then do it again. Don't think about creating a podcast because what you think is going to sell. Think about a podcast as far as what it means to you. Grow your audience It's everything outside of podcast that is the best thing to grow your audience. It is on LinkedIn, it's your social media platforms or your personal platform as well. Putting yourself out there as who you are and bringing that purpose of your podcast, intertwining into our personal and LinkedIn network and that's where you're going to start to gain interest and people that are going to follow you. The more organic, natural and authentic way of growing your listeners, that's where it's going to come from because people are more likely to engage with you. Grow your return on investment The value in podcasting should never be about money. When I reach out to people for gas to BizTank, people sense the passion when I reach out to them and they want to help and be part of it even though they don't know me. If its purposeful and meaningful, you're going to get something out of what you're doing. Let's connect! Episode 211 is the farewell episode for It's No Secret with Dr T., and I thought I would bring back my good friend, previous guest and long-term supporter of the podcast Jeff Peterson to help my say goodbye. Jeff Peterson is the owner of Geneva Supply and was a guest on the show back on Episode 017 with Bill Davis, titled Drive Your Business. In addition to bidding farewell, I did manage to draw some more business wisdom from Jeff before we hung up the microphone. Today we discuss: Working with Amazon Helping manufacturers with Content & Brand Management What takes to get noticed Why entrepreneurship is bullshit Intrapreneurship - the creative entrepreneurial spirit within an organisation Why you should not ask family and friends what they think of your ideas, just remember the bad singers you've seen on American Idol, someone told them they were good at singing. Why you should have a business card. "When you're living in a world where there are many generations that are still in the working community, you cannot go hardcore just one way when it corms to networking". BIZTANK & Kids in The Tank It's about career exploration. School is not connecting kids to the reality of life or the career paths that they will be heading into very soon after school. It's about exposing them to new possibilities. The key is to empower kids that their career decision is their decision. It's not their parents or school guidance councillor. We need to open and expose their minds to other careers. Final Tip Don't shy away from people you know and enjoy being with and talking too. Don't think about what you're going to get to from it, just enjoy the pleasure of peoples company. Get to know people just to get to know people, nurture friendships in an old-school, business card sort of way. Don't focus on all the social media and quick online fixes (number of friends, likes, etc.). Build real relationships. Farewell It's kind of sad to bid farewell, but you've got to know when it's time to walk away, and now is the right time. I'd like to thank everyone that has been a guest on It's No Secret with Dr T. and all the people that have been part of the 55,000 downloads over the past 211 episodes. There is no longer any need to write a podcast review for It's No Secret, but I do encourage you to write reviews for your other favourite podcasts. Hosts feed off of positives reviews. Kerry Frank is an entrepreneur that has proven how one woman can go about revolutionizing an industry with smarts, courage, and tenacity. Little did she know in 2007, when she founded Comply365, that her efforts would completely transform the aviation industry. She played an instrumental role in the FAA’s approval of replacing flight bags with tablets in cockpits. Her vision for digitizing bulky airline pilot manuals took the company from their home’s basement in Northern Illinois to an extremely successful business in Beloit, WI. She has received multiple awards including the 2018 Ken Hendricks “Seize the Day” award celebrating entrepreneurship in Wisconsin, as a result of these efforts. Kerry led the charge to revolutionize the flight decks around the world with the software products that were developed. At the time she sold Comply365 they had over 75 clients worldwide of which a dozen were Fortune 500. For Kerry Frank, entrepreneurship and faith go hand-in-hand. It takes a lot of trust and perseverance to push an innovative idea through rejection to success. With the support of her husband and three children, she continues to inspire others and drive innovation wherever she sees a need. A great description of Kerry’s passion can be summed up in this – Success isn’t just about what you accomplish in your life; it’s about what you inspire other to do. Jerry Liu grew up in America and China. Having this two-country upbringing would later help him a lot when it came to finding a niche and creating his own positions in companies and on his own. Jerry graduated from University of Pennsylvania. He thought going to an Ivy League school would solve all his problems with life, but it instead made him more confused about life. There was one thing he did learn at Penn, and that was the importance of constant learning and constant self-examination. That's what he does online. Jerry prides himself on making meaningful and cerebral content on YouTube and often infuses knowledge about East and West into his content creation. As I discovered, not every young person runs around like a headless chook, in fact some are super switched on about their future careers and I think this is one episode you’ll want your kids to tune into. Today I had an awesome conversation with four high school students from Wisconsin, USA. Madelyn, Jenna, Noal and Ryan are hosts on a podcast series called Kids In The Tank, created by BizTank, an educational experience about the world of business for high school juniors and seniors. Normally the kids will research and interview their guest and then part way through the interview the microphone is FLIPPED and the guests get to ask the kids some tough questions about business. In my show we reverse it again: I interview the kids first and then they FLIP IT on me. It was a fun interview and a little different to my previous shows. What have they learnt or become more aware of since starting their own podcast series and interviewing successful business people? They are totally switched on about personal branding and the power of social media and your future reputation. What you post today can have an impact on your future. It’s important to be nice to everyone. Treat everyone with respect regardless of who they are. There’s no need to be afraid of people with really important titles. It’s important to build long-term relationships and you should never give up on your goals So far they’ve learnt something form every guest that has been on the show. (That’s a very important lesson right there). Has being on Kids In The Tank changed their view of business? Yes! They all agree you need to get out there and experience as much as you can about different aspects of business, because that’s how you’ll know if it’s what you really want to do. By trying a lot of different things, you’ll also find your true passion. What message would they like future employers to know about young people today? It’s not fair to generalise young people today as all being lazy. Not every young person feels they are entitled to success without working for it and the media needs to take some of the blame for blowing things out of proportion. It was really obvious these kids have great role model at home and I think this is important for all parents to understand. Parents have a huge influence on a kids future work ethic. FLIP IT: What we discussed. There is no secret in small business. All the answers are out there, you just need to find them, but more importantly you need to apply what you learn. You only need to do 10% more than everyone else, not 100% more. The good, the bad and the ugly of partnerships: And why you need to work out specific roles for each partner before you begin. Sometimes we block out the negatives and only see the positive in future partnerships, but usually there are hints of future problems if you look hard enough. If a potential partner doesn’t handle stress well, don’t think it can be avoided by you taking on all stressful situations…I can’t last. If you make a mistake in a partnership, that’s fine, just make sure you learn from it. How do you set your business apart from other businesses in the same industry? It’s simple; just do something different. Don’t follow what everyone else is doing. Be a leader. Listen to your customers. Do they want a faster service or more variety? Listen to their wants and needs and fulfill them. If you have any question about this episode please feel free to email me directly at tf@tysonfranklin.com My latest book It’s No Secret There’s Money In Small Business is now available from all online booksellers, and if you live in Australia it can be ordered from most bookstores. Also, Book Depository deliver freight FREE worldwide. Also, please feel free to download my 8-Page article 12 Secrets To Get More People Through Your Front Door. It's a great read.
