Simona Grace is a single mom, an outspoken advocate for women's political empowerment and the founder of Moms in Office. Prior to founding Moms in Office in 2018, a progressive political organization dedicated to electing more moms to office and working to achieve economic justice for all women, she has held various positions in education and publishing.A speaker and frequent commentator on women's rights and progressive issues, her writing and work have been featured in numerous publications. She has been named the 2020 California Mother of the Year by the American Mothers Organization. After immigrating to the United States when she was 18 years old, Simona graduated from UCLA with a degree in Comparative Literature, summa cum laude. She lives in Los Angeles with her 11 year old son.-Key Takeaways We see a picture of someone on social media and we decide who the person is and fill in their story without actually knowing it (12:38)She's been fighting her whole life - for her education, her immigration status, against bias, for her son - so she became really good at it. Once she was in a position where she was settled, she realized she wanted to fight for the rights of other women and moms to make sure that someone gives them a voice (19:40)A lot of women question themselves and talk themselves out of running for office because politicians don't look and sound like them - most politicians we see are rich, white men. How can a working mom or single mom affect change - it seems daunting (22:55)What do you need to run for office? Your determination to help others, your authenticity, caring for your community and your wanting your child to have a good future. That will keep you going (24:16)We have 535 voting members in congress, 25-26% of congress is made up of women. Out of that small group of women, only 25 are raising kids under 18. That's 5% of congress. Moms make up one of the largest segments of the US population and the smallest segment of our federal government (29:48)What can women do who want to run for office, but are scared? Stop telling yourself that you can't. We need to stop questioning ourselves just because we don't look like the standard politician in the US. Start talking to others in your network for advice on how to keep going and you will find people who will build you up and make sure you don't give up. The more women we elect, less women will question whether or not they are capable of doing it (34:30)-Thank you to ChildLife Essentials for sponsoring this episode! Lillian describes her life as a curly path of adventures, with her most recent focused on founding Figure Group and Huatau. When Lillian and founder of Entrepreneurial Women with Purpose, Catherine van der Meulen first connected the conversation evolved into a learning experience to unpack the idea of periods of deep thinking to redesign, solve and challenge the way things have always been done. Lillian feels that as a child she wasn't aware that ‘thinking' was a specific skill that could be honed and trained, but after working at a Think Tank, she was trained to think, to think strategically, ask good questions, created space for the thinking and then she applied the model to all parts of her life. Lillian encourages us all to stop looking through the same lens, explore the depths of our minds, re evaluate the idea of continuous learning and embrace the power of collective radical change. Last week, on Jewelry Navigator Podcast, “Here's to the Men in Our Lives - Jewelry to Celebrate Men and Dads”, I featured jewelry for men, and Tin Haus was featured with the Andromeda ring. Christina Grace, founder of Tin Haus, is a Graduate Jeweler from GIA, an artist, and currently completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. What inspires me the most about Christina is the unhindered path she creates for yourself. When we tap into the stillness of our souls with courage and sincerity about what we want, we’re released of other’s expectations and assumptions, only then can we grow to express who we are, and what we value. For Christina, her expertise is well rounded. As a first generation American, her family immigrated to the States. Her family moved to California, where Christina flourished within various art mediums, including performance and movie arts. Learning to leverage where you are, with whom you can collaborate and grow creates a limitless path. While exploring and expanding her collections, Christina integrates her acquired knowledge with what inspires her. Utilizing her education, background, and connections, Christina is creating a flight plan with her art and jewelry to inspire others to discover and celebrate their unique expression from their own self discovery. You can find Tin Haus at tin-haus.com and on Instagram @tin_haus Jewelry Navigator Ground Crew You're invited to join Jewelry Navigator Ground Crew! This week, Lauretta Roberts speaks to Broadcaster Gaby Roslin and Air & Grace Founder Claire Burrows. Claire has spent spent over 20 years in the footwear industry and often found herself the only woman in the room at a range of meetings fighting the case for shoes women actually wanted to wear. Frustrated with the notion that comfort and style could not co-exist, she took the leap to go it alone and create Air & Grace which creates "shoes as covetable as they are comfortable" says India Knight of The Sunday Times.Born out of Gaby's love for the brand, she decided to collaborate with Claire on a charity partnership for The Prince's Trust to create a limited edition design of the Copeland trainer, one of the brand's popular styles, which sold out in just over 2 hours. “As an avid walker and Air & Grace addict (I have five pairs!) it was only natural for me to collaborate with Claire and her team to create a pair of trainers that could be worn to withstand city pavement pounding."On this Podcast they discuss the formula behind a successful partnership; how fashion will be changed by Covid19; and the work they do for The Princes Trust.
