Right about now is the time that some of us are looking at getting our garlic cloves into the ground for next summer's harvest. It really is a pretty simple crop to grow but it seems like seed garlic is getting more and more expensive to purchase. I generally save the best specimens from this year's harvest and plant it in the fall, but our bulbs this year were far from impressive, none of them really worthy of saving (remember, we save the best and eat the rest) and I found myself having to order a lot of seed garlic this year. So on this episode of Just Grow Something I'm digging further into the idea of a perennial garlic bed. This is something I explored a couple years ago and that I did unintentionally in my garlic bed from last year. So, I've gone down a rabbit hole of different ways to get a perennial harvest from one bed of garlic. It's not as foolproof as, say, asparagus, where you plant it once and then just continue to harvest for the next 30 years. But, there are a whole host of ways to enjoy that garlic flavor we love while also protecting ourselves from the inflation that seems to be happening with seed garlic. Just one more way to become more self-reliant in our own gardens. Ready to tackle garlic as a perennial crop? Let's dig in! Garlic needs specific conditions to grow and, often times, gardeners in warmer climates have a hard time meeting those conditions. It is said all the time that you should start farming, right where you are at, in whatever way that you can. If you are in an apartment, grow some tomatoes in pots on your deck. If you live in a neighborhood, raise some chickens and enjoy the eggs. Don't wait to have 1,000 acres, start right now! I believe in this adage, but I also understand the comparison that people might make to production agriculturists when they are doing something on such a small scale. That is a reason that I am so eager to introduce you to this episode's guests. Joanna and Brian Guza both grew up on production agriculture farms and have that as their background. However, as a young couple growing their family they did not have the land to farm on a production agriculture scale. They did not let that stop them. They purchased their home on 2 acres, found a niche crop to grow and began farming and selling direct to consumer. And, when this episode is released they will be in the middle of harvesting over 300 lbs of garlic that they will sell out of, almost immediately. It's all about the farming folks, no matter what your situation is. If you love it, do it. Just take it from Brian and Joanna and their delicious garlic. It's all about garlic!! A deep dive into the types of garlic, how to plant, best practices for growing, fertilizing, and more! Growing Garlic Nutrition and Health Benefits Garlic contains allicin, a sulfur compound with many health benefits: an ancient plant used for flavor, health, and medicine for 5,000 years with only a small number of calories. Studies have shown that the properties of garlic can help lower blood pressure, reduce your risk of heart disease, and boost your immune system. It also contains antioxidants that may help people avoid Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Types of Garlic There are over 600 named varieties, grouped into three types. Hard-Neck (ophioscorodon) (German White) Fewer but larger clovesEasier to grow in cold weatherStronger FlavorDoesn't store as wellHarder to braid Soft-Neck (sativum) (most grocery store bought is soft-neck) Stores the longestMild in flavorLarger bulbs and more clovesGrows best inr egions with mild wintersBest for braiding Elephant Actually, a leek.Grows largest of all typesHas the mildest flavorStores wellDoes not braid How To Grow Plant from "seed garlic" bulbs purchased or from the previous season. "Store" garlic is often sprayed with growth inhibitor.Seed garlic has not been sprayedSeperate the cloves, do not cut them up. Plant with blunt root facing down, pointed end facing up. You'll want to space cloves 4"-6" apart and 1"-2" deep. You should have fertile soil, well-draining is a must, pH neutral, and you should avoid planting where alliums have been planted the previous season. Organic fertilizers can help its condition if you want to take the extra step to support your growing garlic. Garlic prefers full sun, at least 6 hours of daily sunlight. Water 1" per week, let the soil dry between watering, you don't want to overwater! Fertilize every 2-3 weeks with Dr. Joe Fertilizing Tabs (raised beds) or with 20-20-20 and Microboost (In-ground) and keep the soil moist during fertilization. Har-neck garlic varieties produce scapes around the spring and summer, by removing them, you can encourage the production of larger bulbs. When To Harvest You can identify garlic bulbs that are ready to be pulled from the soil when you spot green leaves growing on the sides. Check to see if the leaves at the bottom of the stem are brown - if they are, your garlic should be ready to harvest! Before pulling your bulbs, take the time to loosen the soil around the plant. You can use a digging fork but make sure you insert it away from the bulb. Storing Your Garlic After Harvest Let your garlic cure after harvesting it by leaving it in a cool space with good ventilation. After this period is up, you can store your harvest in a cool, and dark spot. Your garlic should not be refrigerated. Soft-neck garlic lasts longer after being harvested than hard-neck garlic. With soft-neck garlic, you can expect your bulbs to stay in good condition for 9 months to 1 year. Alternatively, you can leave the tops on, braid your garlic, and hang them in strings. The key here is to never store them in an airtight container. Garlic bulbs should be kept in a place where they can continue to get airflow. As much as gardeners love the outdoors and the diversity of wildlife that call our region home, there are some parts of the yard and garden where we have to draw the line. With as much effort as we put into gardening and landscaping, we all know the sinking feeling of seeing what can happen seemingly overnight. In this episode of Granite State Gardening, UNH Extension's Emma Erler and Nate Bernitz share proven tips and solutions for dealing with animals that can damage yards and gardens. Straddling the line between supporting wildlife and managing nuisance wildlife can be a challenging balancing act, but we share an approach that does just that. After listening, you will be equipped to prevent damage, and if necessary manage whichever critters take an interest in your gardens this growing season. We hope you will take away some new ideas, as well as what strategies not to spend time and money on. · Featured Question: Growing garlic· Featured Plant: Inkberry (Ilex glabra)· Gardening Tip: Using Tree Guards Resources: · wildlifehelp.org· USDA APHIS Wildlife Services in NH· NH Fish & Game: Living with Wildlife, Wildlife Control, & Nuisance Wildlife Connect with us at @askunhextension on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and subscribe to the monthly Granite State Gardening newsletter. In Gardeners' Corner this week an autumn walk at Mount Stewart reveals beautiful late autumn colour. Also in the programme a visit to a school garden and a memorial garden and practical tips on planting up tulips and garlic for spring. That's Gardeners' Corner with David Maxwell this Saturday morning just after the 9 o'clock news on BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Sounds.
If you watch certain garden shows, they will tell you that you shouldn't even try growing garlic in our climate. 'Stick to garlic chives they say', but seriously it's not the same thing at all. Well I am the kind of person that if you tell me I can't do something, I will be determined to prove you wrong. After many years of failure, this year I had a successful crop and in this weeks episode I am sharing my learnings.
On this week's episode of Down The Garden Path, Joanne and Matt talk discuss tips and tricks for successfully growing garlic in your garden. A species in the onion genus, Allium, garlic's close relatives include the onion, shallot, leek, chive, and Chinese onion. Garlic is native to Central Asia and northeastern Iran and is a common seasoning found across the globe. Cultivated for over 5,000 years, with approximately 1,000 cultivars worldwide, garlic's most popular cultivars are usually the ones that are most suitable to the area they are grown in and are enjoyed by local cuisine. Did you know you can easily grow your own garlic? Or that fall is the best time to plant it? After teasing you about it a few times in earlier episodes, this week we take a deeper look at how to plant, grow, care for and harvest this culinary staple. In this week's episode, we discuss: the difference between hardneck and softneck garlic the best time to plant your crop how and with what to fertilize when and how to harvest, cure and store! Join us to learn more and visit the Garlic Growers Association of Ontario for some interesting garlic facts. Some you may know, some that may just surprise you!
Growing Garlic and Elephant Garlic in the South On this week’s episode, the guys talk about growing garlic and elephant garlic in their southern climate. Which can be somewhat tricking growing in the garden with the temperatures we have in the deep south. They begin by distinguishing between hardneck and softneck garlic. Travis mentions that softneck grows well in areas with milder winters, whereas hardneck garlic prefers areas where winters can get pretty cold. Greg explains that softneck garlic is what is traditionally found at the grocery store. He then shares his experience with growing softneck garlic in his garden. Garlic needs cold temperatures or vernalization, which is the induction of flowering or bulbing. This vernalization period is necessary for the garlic bulb to stratify, or produce cloves. Greg mentions that it rarely gets cold enough in South Georgia for that stratification to take place. Some people claim that putting the cloves in the refrigerator before you plant can help with growth in the southern climates. On the other hand, the guys explain that they have had success growing elephant garlic. Elephant garlic, although related, is not a true garlic. Elephant garlic is closely related to leeks than garlic. They plant elephant garlic around the same time they plant onions. They dig a furrow and plant the cloves with the pointed ends up, about 3-4" deep in well-drained soil. Show and Tell Segment On the show and tell segment, Greg talks a little bit about his Covington potatoes that have done great in the garden this year. Next year he is thinking about doing a row of Covington and Georgia Jets from Steele Plant Company to see which one does better. Travis brings the bottom of an okra stalk from his garden. Due to the cool weather, he recently pulled his okra plants from the soil. He mentions that this is a good opportunity to check for root-knot nematodes. From the appearance of these roots, there doesn't appear to be any root-knot nematode damage, which is good. He also brought some transplants that are ready to go in the ground, which includes Parris Island Romaine lettuce, Brussels sprouts, and beets. The tool of the week is our high carbon steel pruning shears that are really easy to sharpen. These shears are great for pruning muscadine vines and fig trees. Viewer Questions Segment On the question and answer segment, the guys answer questions about soil blocking and pruning Brussels sprouts. Greg mentions that soil blocking is a good technique for people who like to take a long time to do something simple. He explains that the arguments for soil blocks don't hold water against their heavy-duty seed starting trays. Travis has a little more experience with growing Brussel sprouts. He talks about topping Brussels sprouts to get a better harvest. He mentions that the stalks will start by making a ton of foliage on the center stalks and then you will start to see the axillary buds begin to form. Under that foliage on that center stalk, you will then start to see your Brussel sprouts form. If you do not go in there and cut the tops off the plant's energy will be more focused on making leaves. Also, the Brussel sprouts will be unevenly sized along the stalks of the plant. Travis recommends getting a pair of pruners and cutting off the top apical meristem. That will allow the plant to put more energy and focus into growing more buds or Brussel sprouts. This will also increase more evenly production on the stalks in the garden.
