Selma Lagerlöf poetically recorded old Norse fairytales and profoundly influenced Swedish identity. Her work was so brilliant, she was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1909. In old age, she turned her poetic pen to her own life, recalling winters in the 1860s at her beloved Varmland farmhouse, Mårbaka. For our annual Christmas Special, we bring her poignant memoirs to life, accompanied by an audio feast of traditional Swedish music. God Jul! Music featured in this episode was generously shared by Blås, Balg & Tagel, Haga Vokalensemble, MrsBean 1987, Kevin MacLeod, Aaron Kenny, DJ Williams, The Westerlies, and Wayne Jones. You can find a digital copy of Mårbaka and all Selma Lagerlöf's books at Gutenberg Project. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

It so happens that this year marks the bicentennial of the publication of one the very first works of historical fiction in the English language, the short novel "Maid Marian" by Thomas Love Peacock.Through a bit of delightful coincidence, this bicentennial will see the release of a new movie that takes the surprisingly rare tack of focusing on Maid Marian. I was delighted to have the opportunity to sit down with the film's director Bill Thomas and the film's star Sophie Craig to discuss their process in creating the film, bringing some long overdue attention to Maid Marian, and what it was like to make an action adventure film during Covid lockdowns. For more on the film, including the trailer:The Adventures of Maid Marian For free ebooks via the Gutenberg Project of Maid Marian by Thomas Love Peacockhttps://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/966For the earlier episode that focused on the origin and earlier interpretations of Maid Marian:To All the Marians I Have Known with Emily J. Welcome friends! A happy holidays to all of you. I am finally doing something I have wanted to do for a long time. I am recording the classic tale, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I have wanted to do this for a long time and present it to people in its 1847 edition. This week we tackle the fifth and final chapter in this most famous of holiday tales.Pay close attention to the reading and compare it to the way we traditionally see the story told today. It is amazing to me how many similarities to the original text made it through time and what, oddly enough, just didn't.For those of you interested, and to show my appreciation, I am giving you a link to what I am reading from. This is the version provided free of charge by the good people at the Gutenberg Project. Want to know more? Click here!Like what I am doing? This is about common WordPress mistakes and how to get out of a pickle if things go wrong. With all the plugins, themes and community work in WordPress, it's often surprising that any of it hangs together, and that WordPress websites even work at all... (even more so since the Gutenberg Project says David!). Yet, despite that, neither of us have really had any issues over the years. How can this be? There's certainly plenty of scope for things to go wrong on your WordPress website, and to go wrong badly, and that's the subject of the podcast today. What can go wrong and how might you recover. In honor of National Paranormal Day, we're having a sister pod take over our feed! This is The ODDentity Podcast, S7 Ep. 2: Mother Of the Paranormal: Catherine Crowe Here's some show notes from our host! In this episode, I introduce you to Catherine Crowe, known by many as the mother of the paranormal. Crowe is credited widely for helping to lay the groundwork for the founding of the Society for Psychical Research in 1882 and her book, The Night-Side of Nature was the first published work of its kind to consider scientific inquiry of paranormal phenomena. Crowe’s classification system for spirits and phenomena remains relevant to this day. The Night-Side of Nature can be perused for free on The Gutenberg Project website. Hello, dear listeners, and welcome back to another episode of The ODDentity Podcast on the PodMoth Media Network, your bi-weekly foray into the weird, wonky, and sometimes downright spooky. This week, I introduce you to Catherine Crowe, known by many as the mother of the paranormal. Crowe is credited widely for helping to lay the groundwork for the founding of the Society for Psychical Research in 1882 and her book, The Night-Side of Nature was the first published work of its kind to consider scientific inquiry of paranormal phenomena. Crowe's classification system for spirits and phenomena remains relevant to this day. The Night-Side of Nature can be perused for free on The Gutenberg Project website. I've popped the link into the show notes in case you want to check it out. I'd also like to remind you all that merch is available on our Bonfire site. Each shirt is made of soft, premium fabric (a 50/50 cotton/poly mix) and makes a perfect gift for that special weirdo in your life. As the shirt states, we are Weird Together, a family of weirdlings that's been keeping it weird and spooky since 2017. All proceeds from shirt sales go toward hosting costs and will help to keep the weird coming for another year! You can find the Weird Together shirt at bonfire.com/store/opmerch I'll also post a link in the show notes. I wish you warmth and wellness until we meet again in 2021. Next year has gotta be better than this one...right?
