Miracle Molecule The Importance of Nitric Oxide with Dr Nathan S Bryan

Today we're going to learn about a "miracle molecule" called Nitric Oxide and why it is vital for our health - as well as how to prevent losing it from your body - in our interview with Dr Nathan S Bryan. Dr Bryan's new book The Secret of Nitric Oxide Bringing the Science to Life is now available and represents his life's work in researching and educating about nitric oxide. As we age, nitric oxide production decreases due to a breakdown in an enzyme in our blood vessels. That's significant, because loss of nitric oxide production is recognized as the earliest event in the onset and progression of most if not all chronic diseases, including the number 1 killer of men and women worldwide, cardiovascular disease. Poor blood flow is also linked to conditions like reduced cognitive function and impotency. In this interview you'll learn: What is nitric oxide? Why is it important that we maintain healthy levels in or body? How can we maintain healthy levels of nitric oxide in our body? Where can people go for more information? About Author, Nathan S. Bryan, Ph.D.:  Dr. Nathan S. Bryan is an author and biomedical scientist of nitric oxide. He earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin and his doctoral degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport. He pursued his post-doctoral training as a Kirschstein Fellow at Boston University School of Medicine in the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute. After a two-year post-doctoral fellowship, Dr. Bryan joined the faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center. During his tenure as faculty and independent investigator at UT, his research focused on drug discovery through screening natural product libraries for active compounds. His nine years at UT led to several discoveries which have resulted in over a dozen issued US and international patents and many more pending worldwide.  For more information visit www.nathansbook.com and n101nutrition.com/ Also check out Dr Bryan's YouTube channel here. Putting A Bear To Bed: Making Connections with The Magic All Around Us with Dr Susan Eirich

Putting a bear to bed may sound impossible to most people for for Dr. Susan Eirich, it's all part of the rythym of life at Earthfire Institute and illustrates how we can all connect.  This story, along with the story of a wolf who took a cab, the energy healing of two of their animals and the simple pleasure a little snail named Speedy provided her are all part of "the magic that is all around us" that Susan shares in this very special episode for anyone who feels that tug to slow down and make stronger connections with their people, their pets, others around them and the beauty of nature that we're surrounded by, no matter where you live.  "There is wonder absolutely everywhere," she says. Some of the things she helps everyone understand in this episode include Susan's Ways to Slow Down to Tune In:  1: Harness the Healing Power of Nature. Slowing down allows us to reconnect with our bodies and minds, tapping into the natural world's ability to calm, nourish, and support healthy development. Whether it's taking a slow, mindful walk or simply observing the rhythms of nature, this connection can have profound benefits for mental and physical well-being. 2: Develop Meaningful Connections with the Environment. Returning to a special spot in nature—whether it's a tree, a pond, or a quiet creekside—offers solace and a sense of companionship. These regular visits deepen our bond with the environment and provide mental clarity. Visiting sanctuaries and wildlife preserves provides another opportunity to engage with nature while learning about and appreciating the creatures that share our planet. 3: Foster Growth and Joy with Small, Everyday Interactions. Susan suggests simple ways to integrate nature into daily life, such as starting a small garden or welcoming a pet or plant into your home. Even small actions, such as starting a garden or welcoming a pet or plant, can bring joy and meaning. Susan's own experience of finding delight in the simple movements of a snail in her goldfish bowl exemplifies how everyday interactions with nature, no matter how modest, can spark inspiration and a sense of wonder. About Susan B. Eirich Susan B. Eirich, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist, biologist, and author of “Whispers from the Wild: An Invitation,” a collection of startling stories demonstrating why deeply understanding wild animals can heal the trauma that humans, animals, and our Earth are currently experiencing. Dr. Eirich has taught psychology at universities around the world, worked in maximum-security prisons, developed a university counseling center, directed a Nature Conservancy Preserve and lived in remote corners of Nepal, the Mid- and Far East, the Northwest Territories and the Amazon rainforest. She believes it is urgent to inspire the global community to expand wildlife corridors in a network throughout the continents, and works to preserve her local Yellowstone to Yukon wildlife corridor, the last intact wildlife mountain corridor in the world.  Her book is available as hardcopy on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CLPF4QJX?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title And as an e-book here: https://susanbeirich.com/cart/ Her website is https://susanbeirich.com/  and Earthfire Institute's website is here: https://earthfireinstitute.org/  Subscribe to the e-newsletter here: https://earthfireinstitute.org/subscribe/ And submit your stories of connection with nature for Susan's next book by sending an email to office@earthfireinstitute.org   Subscribe to our podcast by sending an email to subscribe@teachingyourtoddler.com  For additional blog posts, check out our blog page here. This episode could change your life - I don't think I've ever said that about one of our episodes before! What if knowing a little more about your child's face (or even your own) could change how you approach all the challenges you or your child may be having from snoring or sleep apnea to ADHD? And it all starts BEFORE your baby is born! Shirley Gutkowski is a grandma of three, mom of five and wife of going on 50 years! She has all her own hair, stopped coloring it a year ago and is the owner of Primal Air a company that helps people get their face to work right. She is also the author of the first pre parenting book focused on development of the face. More Than a Kissing Spot: Your New Baby's Face is a simple and deep dive into all the things people need to know about the mouth and tongue before they are exhausted parents. www.primalair.com/kissing-spot Biologists say that human babies are born about seven months early as compared to other mammals. Human babies are born earlier because of their head size; they'd never make it out at all if they lived in the womb for 16 months. Because of this early exit babies are extremely defenseless. All they have is their cuteness and crying to do everything necessary to get their needs met. It's up to the “hard wiring” of maternal instinct to take over for the rest, including making sure the baby is breathing through their nose. Shirley's book, More than a Kissing Spot: Your New Baby's Face is the most important child development book written to date. Written for soon to be parents, it takes the mystery out of one of the most unusual organs in body, the tongue. The tongue is the most important driver of facial development, and rarely mentioned in discussions of the face. You're going to love this show - she's a hoot and full of amazing information you do not want to miss one minute of this episode - Enjoy the show! Here are 5 Simple Creative Moments You Can Create At Home that don't cost anything and don't take very much time: 1) Take a nature walk, even just down your block, and notice the shapes, colors and sounds. 2) Use travel time in new ways - when you're stuck in traffic or on a road trip, make up a funny story or add new lyrics to a familiar song. 3) If you have a project you need to work on, give the kids some blankets and cardboard boxes and tell them to build a fort or an obstacle course and then once you finish your project, go play in the fort or go through the course with your kids. 4) Give the kids fabric scraps and pillow cases and let them make costumes and make up a play 5) Break down a cardboard box or two and let them use them to make new things - like a bridge across a puddle or a ramp for their toy cars.  Just enjoy the moments and let your kids think freely - you'll be glad you did and you'll be amazed at what you learn!  Find out more at www.crayola.com and on their YouTube Channel here.  Please listen and subscribe to our podcast and leave a 5-star review so we can reach more parents like you! Hosting young children during the holidays can create some risks around the house you might not think of. Creating a safe, functional home, especially in areas like the laundry room, kitchen, medicine cabinet, and bedrooms, is essential for the whole family. Watch this episode on our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/VsVRA-qIWTg As an example, a survey by the American Cleaning Institute, from 2024, showed that 36% of Americans use decorative jars or containers to enhance their laundry space, a trend made popular on social media. However, putting products into clear jars or containers for aesthetic purposes is one way you may be unintentionally putting children at risk.   In this mini episode, Brian Sansoni, Senior Vice President, Communications, Outreach and Membership at the American Cleaning Institute and Torine Creppy, President of Safe Kids Worldwide show us how to help parents create safe and child-friendly spaces without sacrificing aesthetics. Both highlight the importance of proper use of cleaning products and the dos and don'ts of storing them, additional items to keep an eye out for throughout the home and areas to prioritize safety. Whether you're organizing, revamping, or preparing to bring a new baby home, ACI and Safe Kids have the resources, including a new safety guide, to help get your home in tip-top safety shape without scarifying style.  About American Cleaning Institute:  ACI is a non-profit organization.  Established in 1926, ACI is dedicated to advancing public understanding of the safety and benefits of cleaning products, and protecting the ability of its members to formulate products that best meet consumer needs. ACI serves both its members and the public by developing and sharing information about industry products with the technical community, policy makers, childcare and health professionals, educators, media and consumers. Find them at https://www.cleaninginstitute.org/   About Safe Kids Worldwide:  Safe Kids Worldwide® is a nonprofit organization working to reduce unintentional injuries to children ages 0-14 and build equitable and sustainable systems that support injury prevention. How would you feel if your child WANTED to go to school over the summer or was sad when school was closed for a snow day? Mimosa Jones Tunney speaks to the Teaching Your Toddler show about the curriculum that is inspiring kids across the country to WANT to learn, who love school and who get sad for snow days and summer break. Can you imagine? Mimosa is a writer, researcher and the founder of both the American Emergent Curriculum and The School House, a private elementary school in New York. She's also a former political speech and Hollywood television writer as well as an avid philanthropist.  She's also our favorite kind of guest - an activated mom! She saw the deficiency in public education where schools "dumb down" kids and "teach to the test" instead of what she calls "smart up" the kids and teaching to their interests and passions that keeps them loving learning throughout their school life. Over 300,000 teachers per year leave the profession, often out of frutration. The curriculum The School House offers can be used by homeschoolers, "micro-schools"/learning pods as well as brick and mortar schools. This curriculum is so inspiring for kids and so successful, it could inspire those teachers back to the classroom.  So far, communities using this curriculum have appeared in Texas and Florida, and continue to spread across the country. The school is private and continues to beat the state test scores, without ever teaching to the test, because the kids LOVE learning. Mimosa also noted that in their school, they do not allow politics or gossip from the teachers so that everyone feels welcomed and the school can concentrate on learning. It's truly a novel approach that addresses children's learning stages and their areas of interest.  This approach also often alleviates or eliminates typicial learning challenges that children display due to the antiquated approach most typical public schools take for learning.  To find out more about Mimosa, The School House and American Emergent Curriculum, visit the links below.  https://www.instagram.com/mimosajonestunney/ https://www.tshanywhere.org/ https://www.americanemergentcurriculum.org/ https://www.theschoolhouse.org/ Please like and subscribe to our podcast and leave a 5-star review so we can reach more parents like you! Our guest today suggests doing just that to help understand how different our bodies feel before and after eating as a way to regulate your body using Lifestyle Habits. She also says the scale isn't always right - listen to the episode to find out why.  Our guest today, Sam Cutler, is a Harvard-trained nutritional health coach as well as the founder and CEO of the lifestyle medicine app, www.MINDFULL.so According to the website www.MINDFULL.so is "a meal planning and health coaching app where [Sam] guides thousands of women to live a life of food freedom, walking away from counting and tracking towards a life of eating primarily whole, nourishing foods." In this episode Sam discusses the importance of lifestyle habits as primary medicine for health. She emphasizes the role of food in this and shared her personal experiences with a health-conscious upbringing and the challenges she faced when she left home. Sam highlights the benefits of involving children in the cooking process and encouraging them to understand the benefits of different nutrients. She also discusses the value of being mindful of one's body and emotions, especially during hormonal fluctuations. Sam discusses the importance of incorporating anti-inflammatory foods into our diet to regulate bodily inflammation, which can impact various aspects of health, including hormones, mood, energy levels, and bowel movements. She explains that inflammation can lead to the development of chronic conditions and diseases. Sam recommends incorporating foods like turmeric, ginger, leafy greens, and fermented items like sauerkraut and kimchi into their diet to support gut health, which in turn can lower inflammation. Sam emphasizes that small changes in daily habits, such as incorporating more whole foods into the diet, can have a significant impact on health. She also discusses the role of stress and the need to lower it, as well as the influence of environmental factors on health.  Sam discusses the importance of healthy meal choices and the challenges of meal preparation. She proposes a simplified approach to meal planning and preparation, focusing on ingredient preparation and ratio assessment to ensure balanced meals. She emphasizes the value of having flexible, repeat ingredients to reduce waste and allow for customization. She also suggests the use of an air fryer for quick and easy vegetable preparation.  Sam mentions the practice of "extending" leftovers into new meals like soups or salads to prevent food waste and emphasized listening to your body's intuitive hunger and nutritional cravings, which fluctuate based on factors like activity levels, stress, menstrual cycles, and mental energy. She explains that increased demands necessitate more nourishment, rather than attributing it to "stress eating."  Sam is offering the TYT listeners 50% off their first month of the www.MINDFULL app using the promo code "Toddler50" so check it out here!  Find Sam here: Her website: thefitfatale.com Instagram: @thefitfatale Facebook: thefitfatale Tik tok: thefitfatale   Please like and subscribe to our podcast and leave a 5-star review so we can reach more parents like you! Stefanie Hohl, M.Ed., has been teaching children to read for years. She holds advanced degrees in both children's literature and early childhood education, and she has experience running preschool, homeschool, and local storytime programs. Stefanie developed the ABC See, Hear, Do Learn-to-Read method to make early reading fun and easy for kids and their parents. Stefanie lives in Pittsburgh with her husband, five children, two very silly dogs and two cuddly cats. The program combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles and has shown to increase learning and retention by 90%. In this episode, Stefanie also shares her journey of developing a parent-friendly reading method and emphasizes the benefits of incorporating movement into learning. Stefanie emphasizes the importance of building a strong foundation in phonics before third grade to prevent kids from falling behind and struggling in school, as reading is essential for learning across subjects. The research shows phonics is the best way for kids to learn reading, though many schools have abandoned this approach, leading to an alarming percentage of students not being at grade level. Stefanie's program consists of seven levels designed to make learning fun through games, activities, and books that teach letter sounds and different phonics patterns in a multisensory way. We discuss the importance of parents selecting age-appropriate early readers for their children and the early signs of reading disabilities. Wondering what the signs are that your child may potentially struggle with dyslexia? You HAVE to listen to our interview with Robin Zikmund, a mom-advocate from the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE). It's estimated that about 20% of kids struggle with dyslexia; that's one out of five! AND - it's hereditary, so if someone in your child's family struggled with dyslexia, that could mean your child is more likely to struggle too. There's a spectrum for dyslexia too so there's a huge range to how much it might affect someone. Early intervention is KEY, Robin says so this episode is even more important if you have little ones - like before age 5! While this episode is not meant as a diagnosis, Robin will help you start looking for some of the earliest signs of one of the most common learning challenges - she will also help you understand what your next steps are to get the support you need from your child's school. Robin's story of her son's frustration with reading and learning to the point of complete defeat, will break your heart, but also her drive to get to the bottom of what was happening and eventually "educating the educators" will inspire you to advocate for your child too. She mentions the Orton-Gillingham methods which you can find out about on the IMSE's website here. https://imse.com/ She also mentions Emily Hanford's podcast called Sold A Story found here: https://features.apmreports.org/sold-a-story/ Robin serves as the Dyslexia Advocate and Community Engagement Manager for IMSE, the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education - a literacy training company focused on the science of reading. The New Paradigm of Skills-Based Hiring with Doris Savron

The workforce market is evolving, and this year we'll see more employers begin to move away from the emphasis on four-year degree requirements to greater recognition of valuable skills. However, there are sizeable skill and opportunity gaps for workers illustrated in the results of the University of Phoenix's recent Career Optimism Index® study. The Index showed that while more than half of Americans are seeking their next career move, 70% would prefer to stay in their company if they were given more opportunities to learn and apply new skills.   Studies by workforce research leaders McKinsey and Deloitte make the case for focusing on skills as well.  In this episode, Doris Savron, vice provost of Colleges, Assessment and Curriculum at University of Phoenix, discusses the transition to skills-based hiring in the workforce. She also talks about how workers can leverage their skills, employers can develop talent, and education leaders can empower learners and job seekers in this new era of skills-based hiring.   Doris Savron, Vice Provost, Colleges, Assessment and Curriculum, University of Phoenix Doris Savron has over 23 years of experience in higher education in a variety of settings. Doris serves as Vice Provost overseeing the strategy for University of Phoenix academic programs and curriculum design, institutional assessment and faculty. This includes oversight of strategy for degree, certificate and course offerings, design of curriculum and student learning outcomes for the University. She works collaboratively with her team members to innovate academic solutions that enable the University to provide exceptional student experiences and learning environments to support student success. In her tenure with University of Phoenix she has served as associate faculty, campus vice president, regional Vice president of student services, and college operations.    Doris is a first-generation college graduate with her parents never finishing high school and saw first-hand the struggles a lack of education creates for some families, and the benefits and opportunities a degree brings to future generations. She understands the unique challenges that older adult students encounter trying to navigate their life responsibilities while also earning their degrees.   Doris is passionate about giving back to the community and serves on several boards including Career Connectors and Propenum College in Lusaka, Zambia, and recently completing a six-year term on Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce.  Doris is often sought out as a speaker for her expertise on mapping relevant skills in programs and building an infrastructure to support career tools in curriculum design, micro credentialing and other innovations in curriculum (1Ed Tech, PACRAO). Doris's significant contributions in her profession, mentoring, and community leadership led to being selected as Greater Phoenix Chamber's Private Sector Athena Finalist in 2020. Her advocacy for women in leadership has led her to project work in India, Zambia and the U.S. supporting women to achieve their potential in their profession. So your child is acting up or suddenly exhibiting signs of autism or allergies · what if I told you a change in diet and strengthening their gut biome could alleviate or even eliminate these symptoms? That's what our guest is going to help you learn about in this episode. Talk about the power of one person – several years ago, one mom Zen Honeycutt had an idea for organizing moms all over America to unite against the things she saw happening right before her eyes with her own 3 sons – experiencing symptoms of allergies and autism. She realized moms needed to hear about the dangers of engineered foods as well as the chemicals, pesticides, and fungicides they spray on the food, and to have a place to reach out to each other, support each other and learn from each other. So she founded Moms Across America .org whose website introduces them as “a national coalition of unstoppable moms” and she is also the author of Unstoppable: Transforming Sickness and Struggle into Triumph, Empowerment and a Celebration of Community published in 2018. She's going to talk to us today about solving childhood issues using good food, food safety, the difference between non-GMO and organic foods, the dangers of school lunches and community food cooperatives. The woman Robert Kennedy Jr called the modern-day Rachel Carson, please welcome Zen Honeycutt.
