This week, Roqayah and Kumars are joined by Ariel Gold and Lily Tajjadini. Ariel serves as the national co-director of the anti-war group CODEPINK, and is an organizer with the Ithaca Committee for Justice in Palestine. Ariel has been published in The Huffington Post, Forward, and Tikkun Magazine, among others. Lily is also an organizer with CODEPINK where she is the Iran Campaign manager. Ariel and Lily, who were recently involved in the historic occupation of the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington, D.C., describe the events that lead up to this dramatic action and what hurdles they encountered from local authorities, the Secret Service, and a barrage of protesters loyal to self-appointed president Juan Guaidó. Ariel and Lily recount the creative efforts on the part of the embassy activists, who called themselves as the Embassy Protection Collective, to get food and supplies into the embassy where as many as 50 demonstrators were inside, having been invited to stay by the legitimate government of Venezuela led by Nicolás Maduro. We hear about hostile clashes during which pro-Guaidó protestors, who had barricaded the exterior of embassy, attempted to intimidate embassy volunteers and prevent access to first aid, medicine, and food. We discuss the fate of activists who were arrested by authorities after the embassy was illegally raided after an incredible 36 days. Ariel and Lily explain that activists haven’t been charged with trespassing, an admission that the embassy was Venezuelan territory. Additionally, representatives of Guaidó’s self-described “government” still haven’t gained access to the site, further proof of the shaky footing the US government knows itself to be on. Finally, Ariel and Lily explain that, far from a symbolic act, this effort had a real impact on ratcheting down tensions and making a US military attack on Venezuela less likely. Reuters bragged Friday about its scoop that Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke was once involved in a notorious hacker group, but revealed in the process that one of its reporters willingly sat on the story until after O’Rourke lost his Texas Senate race to incumbent Ted Cruz. Jeanine Pirro’s weekly Fox News Channel program Justice with Judge Jeanine did not air Saturday night. The “Hands Off Venezuela” protesters are not only against any sort of intervention in Venezuela, but many actually believe Maduro is a good leader. Don't forget about the Edwards Notebook and the Veteran's Tip of the Day! All of this and more as time allows.

On January 23, the US government sponsored a political coup in Venezuela, with right-wing politician Juan Guaidó’s self-swearing in as “interim president,” a stunt worked out in advance with the Trump administration. Washington immediately recognized Guaidó, an operative of the extreme right, US-funded Voluntad Popular party, who had been suddenly elevated to the presidency of the opposition-controlled National Assembly on the eve of the coup. The Trump administration at the same time declared the Maduro government “illegitimate.”As you can imagine, the situation is developing quickly in Venezuela, with imperialist countries circling to side with Guaido to further exploit the natural resources of the country, in the context of economic and political unrest. Accent of Women is not a news service, so we can’t provide you with up to date information about what’s happening. However, today’s program offers some analysis of the background and context for this Parliamentary coup. On the show today is Eulalia Reyes de Whitney, co-convenor of the Australia Venezuela Solidarity Network, working towards solidarity with Venezuela since the Bolivarian Revolution.

Jorge Martin of the Hands Off Venezuela campaign discusses the ongoing attempted coup, which is being aggressively pushed by US imperialism. Washington has stepped up it's efforts this week to oust the democratically elected government of Venezuela. They are now going for broke in an attempt to remove President Maduro. As Jorge explains, whatever one's views of the Maduro government, this is an illegitimate and undemocratic attempt at regime change by Trump and his reactionary allies. It is therefore the duty of all socialists, internationalists, and consistent democrats to oppose and condemn this imperialist intervention, and to offer solidarity to the revolutionary masses in Venezuela. We must unite and shout: hands off Venezuela!
What is the future for Venezuela in the face of continued US sanctions? John Wight is joined by Jorge Martin from Hands Off Venezuela, to discuss the significance of President Maduro's re-election in a socialist nation struggling to stand against the powers of western imperialism...
In the second episode of IMTV, Jorge Martin of the Hands Off Venezuela campaign joins host Josh Holroyd to discuss the political situation, ahead of presidential elections on 20th May. As Jorge explains, Venezuela is being bombarded from all sides by imperialist intervention and the impacts of the world crisis of capitalism.
