Recorded on 27 June 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Lars Ljungström This webinar is about how, soon after the Russian full scale invasion of Ukraine, the Lord put together a most unlikely combination of five actors in order to support doctors and patients in Ukraine with large quantities of highly needed drugs. It is also about the fact that God uses very ordinary persons, which hopefully can serve as an encouragement to many other fellow Christians. The Christian Medical Association of Sweden, KLM, has had contact with their counterpart in Ukraine, CMAU, since 2011. Lars has visited Ukraine in 2016, 2017, 2023 and 2024. Lars has been a member of the Swedish Christian Medical Association (KLM) since 1981, now serving as International Secretary. For more than 30 years he has worked as an Infectious Disease Specialist in a 400-bed hospital in Skövde, Sweden. His special interests are sepsis, primary immunodeficiencies and HIV.Since 2009 he has made annual trips to a mission hospital in Mombasa, Kenya, to help mainly with HIV patients. He and his wife have four children and seven grandchildren, and belong to a baptist church with around 150 members. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/ For the KLM of Sweden visit https://www.kristnalakare.se For the CMA of Ukraine visit https://www.cma-ukraine.com To support the ICMDA Ukraine Appeal visit: https://icmda.net/ukraineappeal/

She is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Writers Museum. SARA PARETSKY revolutionized the mystery world in 1982 when she introduced V.I. Warshawski in Indemnity Only. By creating a detective with the grit and smarts to take on the mean streets, Paretsky challenged a genre in which women historically were vamps or victims. V.I. struck a chord with readers and critics; Indemnity Only was followed by twenty more V.I. novels. Paretsky detailed her journey from Kansas farm-girl to New York Times bestseller in her 2007 memoir, Writing in an Age of Silence, which was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. In addition, Paretsky has written two stand-alone novels, Ghost Country, and Bleeding Kansas, set in the part of rural Kansas where Paretsky grew up. She has published several short story collections, most recently Love & Other Crimes, and has edited numerous other anthologies.

Pius Vilakati is the guest for this episode. Pius is a political activist and International Secretary of the Communist Party of Swaziland. He is a political exile, resident in South Africa. He is a former president of the Student Representative Council (SRC), a student board, of the University of Swaziland. In this episode, we explore the subject of Class Struggle in Swaziland: Pre-and-Post-Independence Swazi Socio-Economic Conditions. We discuss: Pre-colonial socio-economic conditions in Swaziland and Europeans' integration with the native aristocracy for the exploitation of the masses. The Swazi resistance to colonialism The establishment of a capitalist state in Swaziland, class struggle, and the rise of trade unions in Swaziland - moving from feudalism and communalism to capitalism. Post-independence and neo-colonialization of Swaziland The Swazi royalty cooperated with colonizers to oppress the Swazi people. How Sobhuza II's sabotaged the workers' movement to benefit the royal family (Swazi aristocrats) and European settlers. Monarchical absolutism. How Sobhuza II undermined the Azanian/South African liberation struggle through. Like all Africans, the people of Swaziland have always fought for the control of their land. In neo-colonialism, the colonizers will give you “freedom”, the flag, elections, national anthem, parliament, etc., but they control your economy and policies. Swaziland is still a source of raw materials for exploitation and a labour force for the exploitation of our people for the benefit of foreign capital – e.g., the textile industry. In Swaziland we need a democracy where ownership of the country and means of production are at the hands of the people – that means a truly sovereign state independent of foreign influence. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mpilo-nkambule/support

Alejandro Agag is an entrepreneur and a bold visionary whose career trajectory has taken him from politics in his native Spain to becoming the Founder and CEO of the electric street racing series, Formula E. His self-proclaimed addiction to disrupting the motor-sport industry has seen him tear up the motor-sport rulebook in the name of equality and the environment. Born in Madrid in 1970, Alejandro enjoyed an international upbringing in Madrid, Paris, and New York then studied Economics and Business at the Colegio Universitario de Estudios Financieros. Having been actively involved in politics while at University, Alejandro quickly moved up the ranks of the international relations department due to his knowledge of languages. He was elected International Secretary of NNGG at their congress in 1994 and in 1999 won a seat in the European Parliament, becoming the youngest Spanish person to ever do so. In the same year Alejandro graduated, he was offered the position of Deputy Secretary General of the European People's Party. In 1996 the Center-right won the elections in Spain, and Alejandro was offered the position of designated aid to the President of the Government, José María Aznar. At only 28, Alejandro was elected a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Partido Popular. In 2000, he led the Parliaments report on antitrust policy, and was active in redrafting the present antitrust rules. However, in 2001 Alejandro decided to leave the world of politics in order to further a career in business and sport. Together with his business partner Flavio Briatore, he purchased the F1 TV rights in Spain. A few years later, Alejandro purchased the Campos Racing GP2 Team and revamped it into the highly successful Barwa Addax Team. Alejandro quickly realised that many sponsors were withdrawing from Formula 1 because it was not a green sport and made the radical decision to create a cleaner version. He, together with business partner Enrique Bañuelos, began Formula E Holdings, winning the tender to promote the new FIA Formula E Championship. Formula E Holdings went on to set up an electric car racing series in ten different cities around the world. Through Formula-E, Alejandro became even more fervent about climate action and was convinced he could do more with motor-sport’s colossal viewership to promote change. He is now fearlessly taking sport to distant and perilous places like the Arctic, rainforests, deserts, and oceans in order to shine a spotlight on the challenges we face with the climate crisis. This bold venture is an FIA-sanctioned international off-road racing series that uses spec electric SUVs to race in the most remote parts of the world. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Alejandro is also on a mission to bring equality to motor-sport. He got the idea of mixed teams from the mixed doubles format in tennis, in which the women and the men on the team are equally important to a victory and would be standing together in triumph on the podium. He acknowledges he can only play the role he has within his power and so he is determined to make a difference where he can – in the sport he is most passionate about. Alejandro has been named as one of the 10 "movers and shakers" of the Spanish economy by the Financial Times, Spanish "Businessman of the Year" by GQ Magazine, and described as a "political hopeful, economist, banker and indefatigable dealmaker" with a “priceless” rolodex due to his extensive range of political and business contacts all over the world. Useful links https://www.fiaformulae.com/ https://www.extreme-e.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alejandro_Agag Our Favourite Quotes: "You have to take criticism as a motivation, the bigger the criticism the bigger the motivation to prove them wrong.” "I think every company, every industry, and every person needs to become a pragmatic environmentalist." "We are choking in the cities. So we need electric cars to basically clean the air inside the cities. And that was really the objective of Formula E to improve the technology to change the perception of people about electric cars. And we are succeeding in that. The technology is improving massively. We have the Generation Three coming which is going to be an incredible leap in terms of performance of these Electric Formula cars."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Suzi talks to Lizaveta Merliak, International Secretary of the Belarussian Independent Trade Union BNP, about the massive protest movement in the streets in Belarus since August 9, when the blatantly fraudulent election results were announced. President Lukashenko claimed he won 80% of the votes in a deteriorating economic situation and escalating pandemic -- which the government ignored, while spending lavishly on WWII parades. Hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets, workers have downed their tools to go on strike and join the protest movement – while President Lukashenko has dug in, doubling down on repression and shocking the world with the regime’s brutality. Sarah Mason, a former Lyft driver and DoorDasher, now a grad student studying platform mediated labor, talks to Suzi about the California Supreme Court decision and Assembly Bill 5, which have determined that Uber, Lyft, Instacart, Doordash and Postmates are not tech apps, but driving companies, and their workers are employees, not independent contractors. The Court has issued an injunction against the companies, and they in turn have threatened to halt services in California until November when voters will vote on their sponsored Proposition 22, which would give them a carveout, an exemption to the law to deny their drivers rights and protections like minimum wage, sick leave and safety protections.
