Kate Adie presents stories from Israel, the Middle East, Peru and Japan. The Israel-Gaza conflict has been framed by harsh words, and when talk of peace and reconciliation seem more distant than ever, is there space for understanding - or hope? Our correspondent Fergal Keane has spent his career reporting on divided societies, and after spending the last few weeks in Jerusalem, he reflects on the question of hope. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been back in the Middle East this week, working to keep diplomatic channels open to negotiate 'humanitarian pauses' in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Our correspondent Anthony Zurcher travelled with him. The ultra-fine wool of the vicuna was once reserved for the royal dynasties of the Inca empire, and today it is equally adored by European fashion houses. Stefania Gozzer has been in Peru, where she met the communities benefiting from this luxury trade. And in Japan, baseball's Hanshin Tigers finally broke one of sport's longest standing 'curses' this week when they won the Japan Series. Tigers fan Guy De Launey tells the story of how his team broke a 40 year losing streak. Series Producer: Serena Tarling Production coordinator: Gemma Ashman Editor: Richard Fenton-Smith

The Curse of the Colonel refers to a 1985 Japanese urban legend regarding a reputed curse placed on the Japanese Kansai-based Hanshin Tigers baseball team by the ghost of deceased KFC founder and mascot Colonel Sanders. The curse was said to be placed on the team because of the Colonel's anger over treatment of one of his store-front statues, which was thrown into the Dōtonbori River by celebrating Hanshin fans before their team's victory in the 1985 Japan Championship Series. As is common with sports-related curses, the Curse of the Colonel was used to explain the team's subsequent 18-year losing streak. Some fans believed the team would never win another Japan Series until the statue had been recovered. They have appeared in the Japan Series three times since then, losing in 2003, 2005 and 2014.Comparisons are often made between the Hanshin Tigers and the Boston Red Sox, who were said to be under the Curse of the Bambino until they won the World Series in 2004. The "Curse of the Colonel" has also been used as a bogeyman threat to those who would divulge the secret recipe of eleven herbs and spices that result in the unique taste of his chicken.STORYTELLERLiz StockwellBANDFiddle - Laurel Scott Piano/Harmonica - GriffoDrums - Mike AmandesBass - Tom Urwin Acoustic Guitar - Arne Parrott Saxophone - Eli WilsonVOCALSMatt GriffoDrake Shrader Lexi AliotoSupport the showSupport the show via Matt Griffo's Patreon page at Patreon.com/mattgriffo

Sporting curses are always strange, but perhaps none is stranger than the Curse of Colonel Sanders, which has seen the Japanese baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers, suffer decades of poor performances after offending the spirit of the KFC founder. Attempts to lift the curse have included fans apologizing to KFC store managers and making offerings to the statues of the Colonel outside of restaurants. Titus O'Reily and Mick Molloy look at the Curse of the Colonel and another curse that set back Birmingham City decades, with the Nazis bombing their stadium, only for the National Fire Service to then accidentally burn the stand down a year later. Baseball has been Japan's most popular sport for over a century. In The Sportsworld of the Hanshin Tigers: Professional Baseball in Modern Japan (University of California Press, 2018), anthropologist William Kelly analyzes Japanese baseball ethnographically by focusing on a single professional team, the Hanshin Tigers. For over fifty years, the Tigers have been the one of the country’s most watched and talked-about professional baseball teams, second only to their powerful rivals, the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants. Despite a largely losing record, perennial frustration, and infighting among players, the Tigers remain overwhelming sentimental favorites in many parts of the country. This book analyzes the Hanshin Tiger phenomenon, and offers an account of why it has long been so compelling and instructive. Professor Kelly argues that the Tigers represent what he calls a sportsworld —a collective product of the actions of players, coaching staff, management, media, and millions of passionate fans. The team has come to symbolize a powerful counter-narrative to idealized notions of Japanese workplace relations. The Tigers are savored as a melodramatic representation of real corporate life, rife with rivalries and office politics familiar to every Japanese worker. And playing in a historic stadium on the edge of Osaka, they carry the hopes and frustrations of Japan’s second city against the all-powerful capital. John W. Traphagan, Ph.D. is Professor and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Fellow in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is also a professor in the Program in Human Dimensions of Organizations. Japanese Wikipedia entry for the Curse of the Colonel 2009 TV News Report filmed after the statue of Colonel Sanders was found in the Dotonbori River 「呪い」火付け役、救出喜ぶ 探偵!ナイトスクープ This article is from the Asahi TV (ABC) website. Asahi is the producer and broadcaster of the Japanese variety show Tantei Naito Sukūpu. This article confirms that the story of the Curse of the Colonel was covered on the show's first episode in March of 1988. The article also explains that they produced three different episodes that covered the story either in part or from start to finish between the start of the show and March 11 of 2009 (when the article was published). The article adds that the show even had divers go into the Dotonbori River to look for the statue. This was shown on two of the three times they covered the story. Further, the article includes a quote by the producer of the show at the time in which he explains that the Curse of the Colonel's status as an urban legend (toshi densetsu) was cemented after the show covered the story since their efforts to find the statue were so thorough and yet they were unable to locate it. 【都市伝説 2019 最新】カーネルサンダース人形の呪い ケンタッキーおいしいです。 A Japanese YouTube video explaining the Curse of the Colonel. He also talks about some of the legendary characters from both the Hanshin Tigers and the NPB. 11-21-2018 Passed Ball Show- John opens up this show with some discussion on rhetorical Thanksgiving comments. Why do people cook for large groups of family members if they are just going to complain about it? If it is such a chore and an inconvenience, don't do it. Don't invite your relatives in from across the country if all you are going to do is complain about the inconvenience of picking them up. Good to decent MLB players have been taken off of rosters due to crunches. Hopefully, CJ Cron and Derek Dietrich will land new roles soon just as Christian Villenueva has by having his contract purchased by the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese Pacific League. John also brings up the possibility that teams are not looking at talent as much as they claim; they are loading their 40 man roster with players that happen to just be under the age of 22. Just because a player is young, does it mean they have the upside of the likes of Bryce Harper, Ronald Acuna, and Juan Soto? The Pro Football Hall of Fame finalists were announced. Tony Gonzalez, Eric Reed, Edgerin James, Don Coryell, and Clay Matthews are the most deserving of the honor. Once again, the NFL has done a great job of honoring the best players to ever play the game, unlike another sport we know and love. Perhaps a case can be made (being ambivalent for a minute) that the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a little watered down because of the amount of those honored each year. The Washington Wizards are going through a tough time- one that may lead to the trade of Bradley Beal to the Charlotte Hornets. The disrespect of NBA coaches continues to be an issue that should be addressed. While they are responsible for wins and success, they are not given the tools to do their job.

W: Batman! M: Come on now. How can you pick that powerless loser over the strongest man in the Universe? W: How can you pick such a boring emotionless person over the suave Dark Knight? M: Oh really? Well for one Superman is actually super. He didn't buy his powers. W: Well, what Batman lacks in Brawn he has in brain. Anyone can be born with superpowers. It takes a real man to make his own ones. M: Oh yea? Well Superman can fly. W: Batman has the Batwing Jet. M: He can run really fast. W: Why run when you can drive? M: Well, Superman has x-ray vision, ice breath, and many other abilities… W: That I'm sure Batman has, with his brain, figured out how to manipulate and use as a weapon. Face it: Batman is just a lot cooler than Superman. M: I know one thing that Batman doesn't have that Superman does. W: And what would that be? M: Lois Lane. W: He doesn't need a Lois Lane. M: I'm surprised he has used his brain to make a beautiful woman for himself yet. (Written by Tijan Nicholson) 2. やさしい英語会話 (32) Classical or Rock? W: Hi, Tom. What's up? M: Hey, What's up, Yoko? W: Did you get my message yesterday? M: Yeah, I got it! Sorry, I didn't call you back last night. I checked the message in the middle of the night. So, what was that about? W: It's OK. Don't worry. It wasn't urgent. It was just about a concert. M: A concert? W: Yeah, you know Shiori, right? She gave me two concert tickets, and I was wondering if you'd like to come with me. M: Sounds nice. What kind of concert is it? Rock? R&B? W: Sorry, but it's classical music. The Tokyo Philharmonic is coming to Hiroshima next week! M: Uh… I think I'll pass on it. Sorry. Actually, I'm no big fan of classical music…. I mean I fall asleep halfway through classical concerts! W: OK, OK. But think of it this way: you told me that you were really feeling stressed out the other day, right? I heard that classical music is really good at reducing tension and creating inner calm. I think that concert would help you to reduce the stress. M: I see, but thank you anyway, Yoko. I'll pass on the classical music. Ah, I wish that concert was rock! W: Rock? You like rock music that much? M: Yeah!! I love rock music!! Oh, it's darn cool. Everyone loves rock! Don't you? W: Uh…no thanks. I'm no big fan of rock music. It's just… loud. They're just… shouting, and there's no important message. There's no reason to listen to rock music. M: What? You kidding me, Yoko? Rock is fantastic! Rock's the real music! They're singing what we young people like. They're singing about the heart! W: But rock has a bad influence on young people, don't you think? M: That's ancient history, Yoko. No one's thinking that way any more. [sigh] By the way, have you ever listened to rock music? W: Um……no. M: Unbelievable! Hey, why don't you give this CD a try? Then talk about rock music, OK? I think you'll like it! W: OK, thanks. Now, Tom…. Have you decided to go to the classical music concert next week? M: Oh, dear… (Written by Saori Nakanishi) 3. やさしい英語会話 (25) Partying or Studying? M: Hey, Vickie, what are ya gonna do tonight? W: Well, I think I’m gonna study in the library. M: You’re kidding! You wanna study on a Friday night?? Oh, no, no… Vickie, you should relax. You study too much! Let’s go to a club and dance! W: Oh, I'm really sorry, Adam…I can’t. M: OK. I guess that’s a traditional Asian students’ life! W: Yeah, a traditional Asian students’ life! And, I see that you guys like to party! M: Yeah, we go to parties almost every weekend; and we almost always go to a club, too. There’re fewer clubs in Japan and far fewer parties. When I first came to Japan, it really was culture-shock; I just can’t bear this kind of boring life. W: Really? To tell you the truth, I’ve never been to a bar before! Only bad students go bars in China. M: Bad students? Ridiculous, what kind of students are bad students? Hmm… Maybe bars and clubs in Australia are different from those in Asia? They’re not as bad as you think. They’re actually a lot of fun. W: I see. M: I think you should go to clubs or bars once. You should experience the atmosphere there. It's so relaxing! W: Yeah, OK, but maybe some time… M: Oh, so you won't change your mind about tonight, no matter what I say, huh? I’m so sad that I think I’m going to cry! W: Please don't be sad, Adam. I promise I’ll go with you next time. M: Haha, I’m only joking! Hey, typical Asian girl: you’d better study a lot in the library! W: Haha! Yes, sir! (Written by Sun Guangna (Ruby)) 4. やさしい英語会話 (175) Which Team Is Better: The Carp or The Tigers? Situation: A Carp fan and a Tigers fan are about to watch a game in Hiroshima. W: Oh, it's so fun to be here! I really like Mazda Stadium. M: Hey! Who's that guy? He looks pretty important. W: Oh, that's Kenta Maeda! He's a great pitcher! We call him Maeken. I love him! He's got an array of pitches: a fastball, a slider, a changeup, and a curve! M: Yeah, I've heard of him. Are there any other good Carp pitchers? W: I think Takeru Imamura is really good. M: Who's he? I don't know much about him. W: Well…he's a good pitcher, and they say that he'll be a great pitcher in the future. His best pitches are his fastball and slider. But he also throws a forkball about 8% of the time! M: Wow, Tomoko. I see you really, really like baseball and the Carp! But, you know, the Hanshin Tigers are better. W: Oh, really? Are there any good pitchers on the Tigers this year? M: Hmm…I think Atsushi Nomi is a good pitcher. He was on Japan's national team in the World Baseball Classic. W: Hmm… I don't know much about him. M: Really? Boy, you only know about the Carp! Nomi's a great relief pitcher. He's really good at saving games. I watched the game last night, and Nomi was doing a great job. W: But I still like Maeken better. I'm really happy to see him pitching in this game. And we're sitting super-near him! We can see him really close up! M: I still think the Tigers have better pitching and hitting. Also, the atmosphere around the Tigers is really good this year. I hope that the Tigers win it all! W: No way! I'm sure the Carp will win everything this year! The team has a lot of young players. Also they're trying a lot of new things. People say that the Carp have not been champions for a long time, and it's impossible for them to be champions. But I don't believe a word of that! I'm sure that the Carp will win the Japan Series! M: Hey! The game's beginning. Here we go! W: Go Carp Go! M: Come on, Tigers! (Written by Kaho Yasuda)

"Rokko Oroshi" is the official "fight song" of the Hanshin Tigers baseball team. The song was written a long time ago, but only recently in the past twenty-five years or so has it become traditional to be sung at ballgames. During the seventh-inning stretch, fans at Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya (between Osaka and Kobe) stand up to sing this song. At the end of the song, fans release thousands of slender "condomu fusen," or condom-shaped balloons, into the air. Fans of the Tigers are well-known throughout Japan for their undying loyalty, even when the team is terrible (as is generally the case). Fans have been known to spontaneously burst into song at the bar, at the restaurant, in the beer garden atop the department store, at home watching TV, waiting for trains at the platform...pretty much anywhere during the baseball season, actually. Parents in the Kansai region of Japan (Kyoto, Nara, Wakayama, Osaka, Kobe) teach their children the words for Rokko Oroshi from a young age. And, in fact, you can often see families bringing small children to Koshien Stadium, dressed up from head to toe in Hanshin Tigers uniforms and other apparel. There has never been an English version of this song recorded, but there have been two translations from Japanese into English. Check out: http://www2.gol.com/users/michaelo/Fight.html for more information on one of the English translations of the lyrics.
