Welcome Mama's and perhaps some Fathers, to this week's episode of the Happy Mama Movement podcast. This week's guest is Jeremy Macvean who co-founded, 'The Father Hood' which aims to build tribes of healthier, happier men through his work with Movember. This week we discuss: The unacceptable pay gap between men and women, and exponentially as the ages increase and women hit motherhood.Non-birthing partners learning to pay REAL attention to their birthing partners to really know what is going on with the running of the household and to be more than just an assistant. The deeper meaning of "Being a Provider" beyond simply being the breadwinner, and how it can change the dynamics of relationships and family life.Redefining our role and function in the family and finally getting past gender bias in this modern age.How Jeremy was made to see the reality of his situation through divorce and how getting 50% custody of his kids made him understand and appreciate the weight of motherhood and parenthood and how men especially need to establish greater communication in their relationships to properly steer the family vessel.I hope you find this conversation useful and if you do, please share it widely so motherseverywhere can access the support and information they need to thrive.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------JEREMY MACVEAN'S BIO: Jeremy Macvean breathed a sigh of relief when the teacher of his male-only antenatal class advised “To be a good dad, turn up and try”. So that's what Jeremy has been doing ever since. Turning up to invest time and emotional energy into his three children in every way he can. Turning up to support and inspire modern dads through the organisation he co-founded, The Father Hood. Turning up to build tribes of healthier, happier men through his work with Movember. And through his advisory business, Radiate, turning up to share his strategy and communications experience with the likes of Peter Mac Cancer Centre, The Women's Hospital and Telstra Health. Of every role Jeremy has ever played, fatherhood brings him by far the most joy, and is also by far the most challenging.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------RELATED RESOURCES:https://www.the-father-hood.com/ Hosted on Acast. Amy Taylor Kabbaz is a single mother of three who has built a multi 6-figure business from an intense passion to shift our cultures perception and experience of a mother's transition through matrescence. She carries both the heart of an activist and the wisdom of a warrior, which is a core feature of this episode – building business built on a big why and showing up full of integrity. In this episode we discuss: • Feeling the burnt that there's something to be done • Fascinated by powerful women who overcame adversity • Crash-landing into motherhood, feeling unprepared for the change-agent motherhood was and is • Being driven to find answers to 2 questions 1) What happens to a woman when she becomes a mother? 2) Why can't I slow down? • Pausing before moving on, instead of skipping to get to the end and asking ‘what else is here?' • Mixing skills with a strong why when breaking self-sabotage • Following the rules and learning to break them • Allowing freedom and permission to be self-guided in doing it your way for yourself and your clients • Business models that create burnout • Being afraid to let go of identity • You always have choices, there's always something there to support you • Being a fierce advocate in your own life • Being successful with less work, the work IS me • Seeing your learning time as work time • Being a magnet and paying attention to what you want to be a magnet for • Activating the unapologetic leader • Instead of defining success as have, do, be ~ shift it to who do you need to be, what do you need to do from here to have what you want • We don't have to make it commercial if there's integrity and purpose • Why does this story need to be told? – focusing on the why that's moving • Keep going, don't worry about what anyone else • Its safe for you to step forward, but it won't' all be on your shoulders • Judgement of the downward spiral and how to begin loving it • Activating the spaces of your passion to move your business forward • Being called into the bigger problem and the bigger solution, you want to be part of Amy Taylor-Kabbaz is a Best-Selling Author, Speaker, Journalist, Matrescence Activist and Mama of three. This episode is all about the transition from woman to mother. From maiden to matriarch. Ultimately being defined as Matrescence. It's a topic that is not widely known, yet it should be, and this conversation is in service of that. Those early years of motherhood are often experienced in silence and leave women feeling as though the things they're experiencing are meant to be dealt with alone, or that they aren't doing a good enough job, or experiencing perhaps things that are considered 'normal' and actually shouldn't be. That's what this episode is in service of. The mother, making space for her to feel understood as she moves through this epic transition. Please enjoy this amazing and deeply comforting breakdown of Matrescence with our guest Amy Taylor-Kabbaz. Amy is a Best-Selling Author, Speaker, Journalist, Matrescence Activist and Mama of three. She is the author of Mama Rising, the host of the ‘The Happy Mama Movement' podcast and creator of the #1 iTunes meditations for children with more than 12 million downloads - ‘Bedtime Explorers'. Matrescence - Have you heard of it? If you're a mother - you may never have heard the phrase but you have lived it. “Matrescence is the physical, emotional, hormonal and social transition to becoming a mother” Join us today as we kick off our Mini Series hearing from our amazing guest, Jodie Garth, on what Matrescence is, how understanding of this transition has transformed her life and what she wishes everyone knew about this journey of becoming a mother. We think this is such an important conversation- and we'd love you to share this with any to-be-mothers, already-mothers, people-supporting-mothers, or general-population-that-benefits-from-deeper-understanding! ☺️ The top resource Jodie mentions in this episode is the work of AMY TAYLOR-KABBAZ her book- MAMA RISING & her podcast - HAPPY MAMA MOVEMENT
Motherhood changes us. As the generation who were told we could do anything and be anything we want to be, accepting the changes that come with motherhood can be very difficult. Our priorities shift, our definition of success evolves, and we find ourselves questioning our addiction to busy-ness. Who are we now? And can we be the best mamas without completely losing ourselves along the way? The Happy Mama Movement is a collection of interviews and insights with real mamas around the world, reflecting on mindfulness, real connection, and the realities of being a modern day mama.
So if we accept we're not meant to do this alone, then why don't we ask for more help? If we understand, on a conscious level, that the Motherload and the Third Shift is unfair and unbalanced, then why don't we speak up more often and lean on those around us? This is something I've been contemplating a lot lately. I've needed more help in my own life over the past few months, and I've also been witnessing and observing the women around me struggle to lean on others. And what I've seen is - it's more than just "I should be able to do this myself." There's the worry of your children being seen as difficult; There's the concern that your kids are too much; There's different disciplines and approaches. In other words, the reasons we don't ask for help run deep... and if we're ever going to stop this Superwoman addiction, we're going to have to shine a light on them - which is exactly what I do in this episode.

We worry we're not doing enough for them, then we worry we're doing too much for them. We feel bad we don't play enough with them, and then we worry about all the other things we need to get done while we play with them. Motherhood is full of contrasts - and doubt. But what if we dropped all of those expectations of perfection, and actually began to see what our children really need: connection. And not just connection with them, but with ourselves too. Motherhood is a chance to reparent yourself - and find within you what you are missing too. And in this episode with mama of four, former award-winning teacher, and creator of Playful Families, Amy Cox shares with us how she has discovered that learning how to 'play' with your kids is actually just the beginning... what it really opens up is an acceptance of not only your child's uniqueness, but your own. You can find out more about Amy's phenomenal approach to play and motherhood here - http://Playfulfamilies.com/manifesto
Our bodies are the source and creator of motherhood. They are the vessel for the gifts of our children. But what happens when our body doesn't follow the 'plan' of pregnancy and birth? What happens when you feel your body let you down, or is now changed forever?Dr Rebecca Ray is one of the most beautiful and insightful writers on instagram at the moment - and is known for her radical self-acceptance work. But in this interview on her journey into and through motherhood, she opens up like never before - sharing her struggles with her body during fertility treatment, then pregnancy and then post-birth. And in the process, breaks down the expectation that we should 'love' our bodies, and instead invites us to radically reimagine our relationship with the body that made us mothers. For the complete list of instagram accounts Dr Ray suggests to follow for body confidence and acceptance, go to the podcast notes at amytaylorkabbaz.com And follow Dr Ray's beautiful words on instagram, and her books and programs here.
For many years after my first child was born, I struggled with trying to find the balance between who I was before my children arrived, and being a mama. It was as if I was a mass of contradiction - on the one hand, I wanted nothing more than to give myself to my children, dedicated to their wellbeing and happiness. But on the other, I craved my space, my independence, the dreams I had worked so hard to achieve. It wasn't until years later, in my research into matrescence, that I discovered what this was - and how normal it really is. I call it The Inner Split. And it explains how you can both love being a mama, and struggle with it at the same time. If you'd like to know more about your own Inner Split, take a look at The Birth of You online program. And if you're feeling called to share matrescence and the Inner Split with the world, register for the Mama Rising training coming up in September 2020.
Mamahood is filled with so many questions:how do I help my child with their emotions?why do they have so many meltdowns?am I doing something wrong? Is it me?Through in a really tough year on top, and you have mamas all over the globe questioning who they are and whether they're doing it 'right'.This podcast, and all my work, is dedicated to answering those questions that keep mamas awake, and make them question their worth. Whether it's matrescence or meltdowns, we need this understanding so we can stop thinking it's 'our fault', and realise the very best thing we can do is work on ourselves and our own emotions, so we can be there for them. That's why I asked Heidi Garcia onto the podcast.Heidi is a mama to two based in Canada, and has been an Occupational Therapist for more than 15 years. In our community, she noticed a lot of mamas doubting themselves and feeling worried about their children, so she offered to bring some answers. What she shared was way more than that though -and in the end, it came back to what we already know:regulate our emotions, and our children will learn. If you'd like more insights into emotional regulation, visit Heidi's website. A great book to explore is "Living Sensationally: Understanding your Senses" by Winnie Dunn, and two great websites are: "Zones of Regulation" and "Self-Reg".If you are looking for more support with your children and their emotions, contact an Occupational Therapist in your area. And... for all the mamas realising they need to work on their own skills and tools to stay calm, you can now access my 5 Days to Calm online program - taken by more than 3000 mamas - for just $29 here.
A big part of my work with mamas over the past six years has been online group coaching and online women's circles. We gather together, sometimes monthly, sometimes weekly, to reflect, learn and grow together - it has been one of the greatest gifts of my work. In these calls, mamas get to know one another - and get to know themselves. We share our wins and our fears, and we grow together. As part of the Happy Mama Movement podcast, I'm going to start sharing some of these calls with you - in the hope that you hear yourself in them, and you hear the answers you're looking for. This call is from the Returning Home membership - which is now open again. For the next six months, we are going to gather in calls like this, and in our village, to learn, honour, embrace and rise together. You can join us here.
Everyone's experience of this intense time in history is unique - but there are, of course, some common themes, especially when it comes to mamahood. The intensity of everyone at home; The pressure to entertain and teach; The lack of personal space, and the reminder, again, of how difficult it can be to even pee in peace. But there's also a lot of different issues and challenges coming up for so many mamas in this community, and it is my intention to ensure I create content that talks to each of you, the best way I can. Today, I wanted to honour the solo mamas, and reached out to my amazing friend and solo mama to three, Lisa Corduff. In this podcast, Lisa talks about parenting on her own, and the grief and loneliness that has been triggered. But she also shares, as she always does, an insight into your strength as a solo parent, and the reminder you may just need today: You've got this. You've already proven you can do hard things - this is no different. Even if you are not a solo parent, you'll get so much out of this interview.
These are uncertain times... but there are answers for us, mamas. There may not be answers for when this will be over, and what the greater effect will be, but there are answers that can bring peace, hope, and resilience. For the coming weeks, and as long as we all need it, I am going to be increasing the Happy Mama Movement Podcast to two times a week, bringing you content that will inspire you, reassure you, and give you ideas and support.Think of it as a pop-up radio station, especially made for mamas with children young children during the COVID-19 pandemic. They will be known as the CALMCAST episodes.Today, I am bringing you an interview with Beth Berry, creator of Revolution from Home and mama to four girls. When this pandemic became known, Beth was one of the first mamas I thought of - because surely if we ever needed a revolution from home, this is the time.In this episode, Beth shares her views of what's happening, and how we can care for ourselves as mamas during this time. Her calm approach, and her insight into honouring the mess of it all right now, was soothing to my soul - I hope it is for you too.You can find more of Beth's resources and inspirations at Revolution from Home. And if you would like more support, more community, live meditations and classes to support you through this time, please take a look at my pop-up membership, Returning Home.
Amy Taylor-Kabbaz studies the profound new concept, “Matrescence,” that has been researched by Columbia University and covered by psychologists worldwide. She truly believes that we should support mothers so they understand the transition between lives when becoming a mother. After more than a decade covering breaking news and current affairs for the ABC around her home country of Australia, her “traditional” career took an unexpected turn when she found herself lost, overwhelmed and diagnosed with a thyroid condition after the birth of her first daughter. She is now the author of the bestselling Happy Mama: The Guide To Find Yourself, the host of the The Happy Mama Movement podcast, runs numerous online programs for mothers all over the world, is an international award-winning coach, the creator of the #1 iTunes meditations for children Bedtime Explorers, and is currently working on her next two books, to be published by Hay House international. Amy take us through her journey from self to mother, and then the work born from the struggle to find identity within her new role. We talk about society’s expectations of womanhood and motherhood, and the perceived failures if your birth story or identity doesn’t fall in line with those notions. She encourages us to lean into our transition so as not to become overwhelmed or burnt out trying to fit into a box that isn’t meant for us. I love Amy’s reminder that matrescence continues as you grow as a mother and woman. She offers us the opportunity to see ourselves born as Oracles and wise woman because of our new lens and love her gorgeous path to healing and honoring the mother. Amy Taylor-Kabbaz started her career as a journalist at the ABC, working her way up from producer and news reader in regional South Australia to senior producer at ABC Sydney. When Amy started a family though, everything changed. Today we are going to hear about how she made that change from her media career to now Editor and Creator of Happy Mama Magazine, Author of best selling book Happy Mama: 'the guide to finding yourself again’, and host of the Happy Mama Movement podcast. She is passionate about spreading the much needed message of matrescence which involves all the complexities that are often ignored when a woman transitions into motherhood. Every mama needs to hear this, I had many a goosebump moment in this interview as there are some very powerful messages within it.You can find out more about Amy here: https://www.happymama.com.au/
I used to think I would just tac motherhood onto my life - as if it would be another role on top of all I do. I'd go back to who I was - at work, in my relationship, with my body and health - just with the added bonus of a baby, or three! What I didn't know then, but I know now, is... we never go back. Every part of our lives is changed with motherhood - that's what matrescence is all about. But, if we're not aware of this, we can feel like we've lost a part of ourselves, and we grieve what used to be.Are we allowed to grieve our old lives? Are we even allowed to admit that we wish it was like it used to be?Yes, of course. In fact, grieving the changes in your life is a very important step - no matter where you are in motherhood. In this episode, I share a simple and practical exercise we can all do to help acknowledge the significant changes that we are going through, and become OK with the loss of who we used to be.Listen, and share with me how you went with it.I'd love to hear.
Amy Taylor-Kabbaz is a mindfulness coach and author. For the last nine years she's been researching the state of motherhood. Recently she learnt about the study of matrescence - the study of how motherhood has all the components of a big life transition, similar to adolescence. For Amy, it's been a light-bulb moment that has crystalised everything she understands about being a mother. You can find Amy online at https://www.happymama.com.au/ and check out her podcast Happy Mama Movement with Amy Taylor Kabbaz
We're not getting enough rest - that much is obvious. We prioritise the housework, our emails and social media over sleep, and we worship busy-ness over slow living. Is it any wonder we're so burnt out and disconnected from what's important? But rest is not just a matter of getting more sleep - it's a shift in how we prioritise our lives. And that's takes courage. Karen Brody is a mama, playwright, author of 'Daring to Rest', and creator of the 'Daring to Rest Academy'. It is her life mission to share the phenomenal benefits of yoga nidra: the sleep of the yogi. After seeing first-hand the healing power of this ancient technique, she has been daring men, women and families all over the world to rethink rest.In this episode, Karen shares how yoga nidra works (it's more than that quick nap at the end of a yoga class), how to do it quickly and easily in your busy life, why women struggle so much to prioritise rest, and how feminism has caused us to push beyond our limits. You can read all about her work, and download a yoga nidra meditation to start your rest practice, at her website. And if you're struggling to switch off at the end of the day, you can also try Amy's very popular End of Day meditation here too.
How do we hold the space for everyone around us, when we aren't holding space for ourselves? This is what mama of three, writer and yoga teacher Azriel Re'Shel asks in this episode of the Happy Mama Movement. When the world is asking so much of us, making sure we are nurturing ourselves and our own inner needs is a must.
'We are all inherently creative, and as mamas, connecting with something more than just the day-to-day chores of motherhood is a key part to our happiness. In the very first episode of the Happy Mama Movement, Amy Taylor-Kabbaz talks to the creative goddess behind The Fifth Element Life, Hay House Author and Mama Sarah Wilder about connecting with your creativity while raising your family
