Dagenhart that the Keating-Owen Child Labor Act was unconstitutional. This landmark decision marked a significant moment in the legal battle over child labor laws in the United States. The Keating-Owen Act, passed in 1916, aimed to regulate child labor by prohibiting the interstate shipment of goods produced by children under certain ages and conditions. However, the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, found that the Act exceeded the powers granted to Congress under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution.

Kids have undergone significant changes since the pandemic, and these changes can affect their attention, memory, and motivation leading to gaps in knowledge and skills, making it harder for children to engage with new material and impacting their ability to learn. They discuss their contribution to the new book “Mentoring for Wellbeing in Schools” and the relationships between Self-Reg and The Mentoree. The Mentoree began as a collaborative inquiry into the impact of a 1:1 self-directed mentorship experience on professional learning and student achievement. Through a phased approach, we created a community that supports 1:1 self-directed mentorship experiences as professional learning to strengthen teacher efficacy and impact student achievement. Our goal continues to be fostering responsive, reciprocal and non-hierarchical relationships between Mentors and Mentees and among the community at large. For Stuart Shanker, the possibility of a truly just and free society begins with how we see and nurture our children.Shanker is renowned for using cutting-edge neuroscience to help children feel happy and think clearly by better regulating themselves. In his new book, Reframed, Shanker explores self-regulation in wider, social terms. Whereas his two previous books, Calm, Alert, and Learning and Self-Reg, were written for educators and parents, Reframed, the final book in the trilogy, unpacks the unique science and conceptual practices that are the very lifeblood of Self-Reg, making it an accessible read for new Self-Reggers.Reframed is grounded in the three basic principles of Shanker Self-Reg®:- There is no such thing as a bad, lazy, or stupid kid.- All people can learn to self-regulate in ways that promote rather than constrict growth.- There is no such thing as a "fixed outcome": trajectories can always be changed, at any point in the lifespan, if only we have the right knowledge and tools.Only a society that embraces these principles and strives to practice them, argues Shanker, can become a truly just society. The paradigm revolution presented in Reframed not onlyhelps us understand the harrowing time we are living through, but inspires a profound sense of hope for the future. Shanker shows us how to build a compassionate society, one mind at a time.

Creating a Family: Talk about Infertility, Adoption & Foster Care
Does your child struggle with controlling their big emotions? Do they seem angry or frustrated most of the time? We've got some answers! Join us to listen to this interview with Dr. Stuart Shanker, a Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Psychology at York University and author of several books, including Self-Reg: How to Help Your Child (and You) Break the Stress Cycle and Reframed: Self-Reg for a Just Society. He is also an adoptive dad.In this episode, we cover:3 basic principles of self-regulation:There is no such thing as a bad or lazy kid. No matter how difficult, out of control, distracted, or exhausted a child might seem, there's a way forward: self-regulation.All people can learn to self-regulate in ways that promote rather than constrict growth. There is no such thing as a "fixed outcome": trajectories can always be changed, at any point in the lifespan, if only we have the right knowledge and tools. How can parents help their children become calmer when we live in a stressful, frantic, and over-stimulating world? How can parents calm themselves down in the hectic world?Five-step method for managing stress1. Reframe behavior by learning the difference between misbehavior and stress behavior and the signs of each. (Why and why now?)2. Recognize stressors. Some typical stressors broken out by age. Some “hidden stressors” that their children are struggling with - physiological as well as social and emotional. 3. Reduce stress (deep breathing (pizza breath), exercise, touch, music, pets)4. Reflect on what it feels like to be calm and what it feels like to be overstressed. 5. Restoration- energy, balance, and relationship. These steps are not a program for managing a child's behavior. Rather, these are five steps to promote understanding a child's behavior. This podcast is produced by www.CreatingaFamily.org. Dr. Laura Cesaroni is the Clinical Director of FERN in Toronto. FERN stands for Family Education Resource Network. They assist parents, grandparents, and teachers who require specialized resources for teaching, managing, and parenting children who experience challenges. Laura saw a number of children in her practice that were dysregulated and started seeking out effective strategies to deal with big behaviors. Self-regulation is all about understanding stress and the importance of relationships. Over the last several years, Laura has been facilitating courses around self-reg at FERN, and one of them focuses strictly on parents. The goal of self-regulation is restoration. Stress impacts people of all ages, and how people restore themselves varies greatly amongst different individuals. We're in a time full of stressors we can't control or eliminate. However, we can learn to manage, understand, and uncover them. Stress can be high in families when going through the diagnostic process. Recognizing that stress early on is key and it's important to provide as much support to parents and clients as possible. What's Inside:Why stress adds a layer to treating behavioral issues. We all have ideas about the way we want to parent our children, but then they are born, each with their own unique personalities, and all our ideas get thrown out the window. But what if we could gain a deeper insight into each of our children's individual makeups in order to adapt our parenting style to their specific needs? That is exactly what Alex Cantone offers. Alex is a Human Design reader, but specifically tailors her business to reading children's charts to help parents navigate their parenting journeys. If this is the first time you're hearing about Human Design, it's about to change your life! It has totally changed mine. Human Design is a concept that combines astrology, Kabbalah, the chakras, I Ching and genetics, to provide us with a blueprint for each individual person's ‘design' in order to give us the tools to live by our design; IE to be authentically ourselves. In the episode Alex read my chart against my children's, to offer me a deeper understanding into how to be able to support them based on their own needs and it was truly eye-opening. There is no greater gift than feeling as if you fully understand your child and their needs, and can therefore tailor the way you parent them based on that. I'm so excited to put this into practice and hope you will find it as fascinating as I did! Alex kindly offered listeners of Reconditioned a discount to get a chart reading.
