Welcome to today's episode of the Project Mom podcast. I want to do a special episode today highlighting a book that I just read. It's called Real Self-Care: A Transformative Program for Redefining Wellness (Crystals, Cleanses, and Bubble Baths Not Included). The book was written by Dr. Pooja Lakshmin and in this book, she shares her own personal journey and those of her clients as she outlines for us this very real need for self-care, especially as women who are faced with systemic challenges that are made to keep us small and at the service of others. Throughout the book, she focuses on the fact that real self-care has to originate within, and is ultimately an ongoing internal decision-making process that we need to use every single day in order for our needs to be met. This book has given me hope, and I think it will do the same for you, too!For a full list of episode resources, visit this episode's blog post here.Connect with Emily on Instagram: @projectmompodcast

In today's solo episode, I want to talk about emotions – I want to get curious about them, about the meaning we've given them, and how we show up in our day to day because of them. Emotions influence how we perceive and respond to the world around us, ideally helping us adapt to different situations and make choices that align with our values and goals. So what if emotions weren't negative or positive? What if we removed the meaning we've given these feelings, these emotions, and choose to see them for what they are? Messengers. Let's talk about it!For a full list of episode resources, visit this episode's blog post here.Connect with Emily on Instagram: @projectmompodcast

Welcome to today's episode of the Project Mom Podcast. Today's solo episode may feel a little bit different than the ones I've previously released, and that's because I want to explore the topic of new dads today. Are we actually supporting them, or are they getting lost in the shuffle? There's no doubt that this generation of dads is really impressive, they're breaking barriers and going against stereotypes. We're seeing more and more stay-at-home dads and more dads who are choosing to balance family life and work life than we've seen in the past. But with that being said, how can we be grateful, empathize with the work our partners are doing, and still show up for ourselves? Let's talk about it today on the show. I remember being at the height of my pregnancy and just being so big, so tired, and so overwhelmed. I think this happens to a majority of moms, especially if it's their first pregnancy and they don't know what to expect. But what happens when it gets to the point when we feel like we can't keep moving forward at our current pace with our current responsibilities? Cristin Wondergem is on the podcast today and I'm honored to have her share her story of starting a business, getting pregnant, and shutting it down before eventually beginning again. This episode is for any mom who is struggling with the ebbs and flows of motherhood and entrepreneurship, hopefully you'll listen in and feel a little less burdened with where you're at. This episode of Project: Mom is a little different (and super special) because I'm joined today by a real-life friend, supporter, and confidante – Lauren Gold. I met Lauren when both of our daughters were 6 months old at a local motherhood meetup, and we instantly bonded. Lauren has been a source of stability and confidence for me as I've navigated life as a first time mom. In our conversation we chat about how we can break down the judgment and stigma within our own demographic as mothers, the importance of all types of work that mothers choose, and more. This conversation was so cathartic for me and I know we could have talked for much longer! Welcome to today's episode of the Project: Mom Podcast. If you missed my last solo episode, which was released just a couple of weeks ago on July 3, I pondered the realities of how we were actually showing up for the new moms in our lives. So today, in this episode, I wanted to focus on this question: how can we best show up for ourselves? We've talked about this in a variety of ways on the podcast before – topics such as self-care and what that means, finding your community, who builds you up, how to identify burnout before it happens, how getting clear on new priorities and advocating for yourself is vital. But in this particular episode I want to really hone in and focus on the intricacies of asking for help so that you can get some time back to move the needle in your own business, hobby, or passion project. For a full list of episode resources, visit this episode's blog post here.Connect with Emily on Instagram: @projectmompodcast
This podcast is all about the complex intersection of motherhood and entrepreneurship and this conversation really gets to the heart of that! Meet Grace Blacksea the founder of Quench Collective and a new mom who is making it her mission to break down so many of the stigmas surrounding new motherhood. In our conversation, Grace is sharing her story of struggling through postpartum, returning to work when her baby was six months old, and the expansion you can feel when you embrace your identity as a new mom. This conversation was so cathartic for me as I reminisced on my own early days as a first time mom, and I hope it will be for you, too! Did you know that your insurance has to cover baby feeding support? It doesn't matter if you decide to breastfeed, formula feed, exclusively pump, or do a mix – under the Affordable Care Act, your health insurance is required to cover the cost of support. This was news to me! So I am thrilled to spread the word by having Andrea Ippolito, founder of SimpliFed on the show today. SimpliFed democratizes access to baby feeding and breastfeeding services, through a virtual model, 100% covered by insurance. In our conversation you'll hear Andrea's story of how she started this business alongside the birth of her first child, how she's taken the business full time, and all of the options that are available to you. For my birthday this year I was generously gifted tickets to a concert which is very thoughtful – an evening out with my husband at an absolutely beautiful venue in San Diego. Unfortunately though, I had to give the tickets back to the friends who gave them to me because I couldn't find childcare. It was on me to find the babysitter so I can enjoy my birthday present. It feels like an incomplete gift because I am now tasked with finding a way to execute this present. This got me thinking about how we support moms, especially new moms. Are we really showing up for moms in a way that they need or just in a way that's convenient for us? One of the things that has supported me most, especially in those first few months after having my baby, is The Everyday Mother Tracker, a journal that helped my husband and I track feeds, diapers, sleep, and everything in between in one organized place. Because of this, I'm so honored to have its creator, Jackie Mangiolino, on the podcast today. Jackie's baby boy was born 14 weeks premature and spent 99 days in the NICU, which is where The Everyday Mother was born. In our conversation, Jackie shares her story of not only becoming a mom (and how it differed so much from what she imagined for herself), but starting a business with a newborn. Jackie is honest and raw about her postpartum season as well as the ebbs and flow of being a business owner. If you're a mom or soon-to-be mom, and you're thinking of starting or finally going full time with your business, this episode is a must listen. For a full list of episode resources, visit this episode's blog post here.Connect with Emily on Instagram: @projectmompodcastConnect with Jackie on Instagram: @everydaymother
This is a bittersweet episode for me – the last of Season 1. Today I want to talk about something that's very loud for me. It's been at the forefront of a lot of the decisions I'm making – or, to be honest, putting off making. How do you navigate building something that doesn't make any money?I've asked my guests what advice they have for someone who's IN IT right now – or who aspires to create something for themselves. What I've heard: Patience is key. Trust the timeline. Have an abundance mindset. Which makes sense, but when you're in the thick of it, it feels really hard. Sometimes even impossible. I share this because the goal of this podcast right now is to create a community, to let other mothers know they're not alone. Over the next few months, we'll be highlighting the amazing content and guests from season one. Season 2 is on track to begin March 2023!Resources & LinksLearn more about Project: Mom and follow us on Instagram at @projectmompodcast.Do you want to share your motherhood journey on the podcast? This time of year, there's so much pressure to be better. There's a whole industry that capitalizes on personal growth and change, and in December, there's so much focus on goal setting with this “new year, new you” idea. Now, I'm not saying you should rest on your laurels and sit here indefinitely. But movement forward should be honoring you and your life, not driven through “shoulds” or comparisons. That way, we're INTENTIONAL about the choices we make and the goals we set instead of getting wrapped up in the pressure to make big changes during this holiday period.Resources & LinksLearn more about Project: Mom and follow us on Instagram at @projectmompodcast.Do you want to share your motherhood journey on the podcast? To be a mom and own a business, it takes a lot of trust. We can't do everything. We can't be watching our kids 24/7 while also micromanaging every aspect of our work lives. To a point, we just have to have faith that the people around us will hold us up.In today's episode, I'm chatting with Lindsay Dickerhoof, a hairstylist, makeup artist, Mary Kay consultant and owner of Harestream, a mobile wedding salon that travels via a beautiful Airstream van. She's also the mom to two beautiful babies. So much of our conversation has to do with trust, and how important it was for her to grow her business and be the mom she wanted to be. It required trust in her faith; trust in herself; trust in her employees; and trust in the vision of what she wants her business and her life to look like.Resources & LinksLearn more about Lindsay's business, Harestream, on her Instagram page and website. Our family has had a week. My wallet was stolen. My daughter got an ear infection. We tried and took a break from potty training. Recently, I got sick for the first time in YEARS – a head cold strong enough that I rescheduled some podcast interviews to give myself some rest. Our society doesn't support time for rest and healing from illness; there's this belief instilled in us that we must power through anyway. But it's important to remember where these “beliefs” come from – personal lenses, sure, but also communal, generational lenses – and that we are only human. So this episode is for the moms who feel they must “do it all” – and to let them know it's OKAY to rest. In fact, resting might be the most productive thing they do today.Resources & LinksSome books I reference in this episode: Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez and Patriarchy Stress Disorder: The Invisible Inner Barrier Between Women's Happiness and Fulfillment by Valerie Rein.Learn more about Project: Mom and follow us on Instagram at @projectmompodcast.Do you want to share your motherhood journey on the podcast? What if we put ourselves first on our list of priorities? For some parents, this might be a crazy or even slightly controversial idea! But for today's guest, Lindsay Roselle, it has made ALL the difference in her ability to give her best to her family, her work, and even herself. Her reasoning? She and her partner are the ones who have to shoulder the load. If they're not feeling strong, then the whole system won't work. Lindsay is a growth and performance coach for high-achieving women looking to find harmony between their desire to succeed and their devotion to motherhood. She's also the host of the MotherLoad Podcast and a mom to two little boys.Lindsay and I talk about generational trauma (including how she was confronted with this at a plant medicine retreat); her morning journaling practice, the Dark Hour; and how prioritizing ourselves first can make all the difference in how our system works.Resources & LinksYou can learn about Lindsay's Ayahuasca retreat and motherhood journey on her podcast, the MotherLoad Podcast and follow her on her personal Instagram and her podcast Instagram page. Some of the books we mentioned: The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael Singer; Greenlights by by Matthew McConaughey; and Patriarchy Stress Disorder: The Invisible Inner Barrier to Women's Happiness and Fulfillment by Valerie Rein.Learn more about Project: Mom and follow us on Instagram at @projectmompodcast.Do you want to share your motherhood journey on the podcast? Imagine a place where you can receive self-care – drink a coffee, take a workshop, or even get a manicure – WHILE your little one is happily occupied in a play gym within the same vicinity. This is the concept behind The Lullabar, a wellness cafe in North Country, San Diego, which is set to open around the corner from me early 2023.Where I live, The Lullabar is getting all kinds of buzz in motherhood circles. It's remarkable to think about the ways motherhood forces us to grow and reflect on how we imagined motherhood to be.Was it a childhood fantasy? Was it even something we thought about? What role do our own mothers play in how we navigate this world of parenthood?Today's guest is Briana Ellis Hoag, a licensed architect, interior designer and owner of Ritual Architecture. Briana is also pregnant with a baby girl – which means this is our first guest who is in the pregnancy stage of motherhood! In this episode, Briana shares everything her pregnancy is bringing up: the reality vs. what she expected; navigating work-family balance; and how she's working through the void of her late mother, who passed in 2016.Resources & LinksFind Briana on the Ritual Architecture website and Instagram page (and be sure to keep an eye out for her new Instagram account she's launching).Learn more about Project: Mom and follow us on Instagram at @projectmompodcast.Do you want to share your motherhood journey on the podcast? How do we cope with this very real problem of burnout? Real life is MESSY. Things bleed into each other, and that's the reality of parenthood. The other day, my husband and I were talking about wishing our jobs had more separation – that we could do the eight-hour workday, then deal with personal life when we got home.More than ever, we're finding both worlds are seeping into each other. Childcare and personal responsibilities seep into the workday, while work seeps into the evenings, early mornings, and weekends. To me, this is the biggest problem of burnout – the expectation that we should give everything to our jobs and everything to our kids, yet still keep them separate. So that's what today's episode is about – coping with burnout, and some ideas I'm trying out to AVOID getting to those extreme levels. I hope you'll join me!Resources & LinksLearn more about Project: Mom and follow us on Instagram at @projectmompodcast.Do you want to share your motherhood journey on the podcast? Life is so much better when you live from the heart.Today's guest, Randi Halaway, has helped me do just this and I'm so excited for you to meet her. Randi is a heart-centered soul and business coach who helps women transform chaos into abundance, and she cracks her heart WIDE open in this episode. As moms, we can be so hard on ourselves – from being afraid to take sacred time for ourselves to showing up for our kids in the way we want to. Sometimes it might feel like we have to be perfect for them, or that we must shield them from hurt. What if we took that pressure off ourselves and showed up in a way that's just authentically ourselves? Randi is the woman who guided me through this rollercoaster journey, from quitting my corporate sales job, launching a business, and having a baby, which was followed by the most difficult year of my life mentally. My hope with today's episode is to shed some light on self-care and its many misconceptions. We don't need to feel shame or selfish for prioritizing our goals so we can create a life we can thrive in. Here's a gentle reminder: No matter what we accomplished today, or how much money we made, or what we ate for breakfast, we are all worthy of self-care.And when I say self-care, I'm not talking about face masks, bubble baths, and nights out on the town. Imagine if we could all align with our highest purpose by taking the time for deep, reflective inner work. Imagine the love we could share and the impact we'd have on the world - it would be so incredible! Because if we can't settle our minds and be kind to ourselves, then what good are those spa days?Resources & LinksBe sure to check out next week's episode featuring Randi Halaway, the self-love and business coach who has been one of my biggest supporters and guides.Learn more about Project: Mom and follow us on Instagram at @projectmompodcast.Do you want to share your motherhood journey on the podcast? When faced with other opinions of what our lives should look like as mothers, as entrepreneurs, as women, nobody knows how to best navigate our lives better than we do.And in today's episode, we dig into the challenge of following our paths in the face of pushback with Chantelle Selkridge, mom of three, herbalist and owner of Rooted Bush Tea. Chantelle's journey to becoming a mom and starting her Canadian-based business selling Caribbean tea was not a direct path. It ebbed and flowed and zig-zagged in all kinds of ways she didn't envision. What didn't waver was Chantelle's faith in herself.Resources & LinksLearn about Chantelle Selkridge's company, Rooted Bush Tea, and follow her on Facebook and Instagram. And check out the books she's into right now – Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D., and Courage: The Joy of Living Dangerously by Osho.Learn more about Project: Mom and follow us on Instagram at @projectmompodcast.Do you want to share your motherhood journey on the podcast? What is our impact supposed to look like in this world? As a society of doers, there's this narrative that says our worth as moms is equal to our productivity, that we must “do” something with our time in order to be worthy of having it, especially something that can be externally measured. But what if our bodies are rebelling and recoiling?Sometimes the most productive thing we can do for ourselves and our families is to listen and to rest when our bodies call for it. Today, I'm giving you a peek behind the scenes into my own inner callings that have been surfacing lately, and some questions I've been grappling with. For us moms who already “do” beyond the comprehension of money and beyond the hours of a typical job, at what point can we just soften into being?Resources & LinksI can't stop thinking about my conversation with Alison Ryan in Episode 5.
