What's my Why or work? How do I do my work differently?"But the notion of “spirituality of work” puts a different spin on things. Is this my work? I think too often we think “if I only knew 'how to'”! Everyone asks “how”, but my how is not your how. We need to ask ourselves “why”… the why is the reason and the way! 1st: Look and listen… be open, a vessel, a cup. 2nd: Take note… it's like writing down a recipe and reading the instructions. 3rd: Apply… what good is owning a beautiful dress if we never wear it, having fine china you never use? 4th: Embody/PRACTICE... it's like wearing high heels until you don't fall, until if feels natural to you. Everything is a working-in-progress… A never-ending journey, to be enjoyed. Never a one-and-done thing. This is MY WORK too, I feel like I could say so much… but I still need to go deeper within and find the words.   IMPORTANT: If you are in an abusive relationship and you don't feel safe, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline! Unshelled: George Washington Carver's Real Legacy

In “Unshelled: George Washington Carver's Real Legacy," producers Ishan Thakore and Katie Jane Fernelius explore a lesser-known aspect of Dr. George Washington Carver's legacy: his role as a conservationist and a practitioner of sustainable agriculture. Carver's life defies easy explanation. He was born enslaved and rose to the heights of American academia. Long a painter before he became a botanist, Carver's art was even accepted into the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. After his death, evangelicals, the LGBTQ community, and the NAACP all heralded him as a pioneer. The military even named a ship after him during World War II. But today, most listeners might only vaguely recall him as “the peanut guy,” who makes a recurring, albeit one-dimensional appearance during Black History Month. Mark Hersey, an environmental historian and author of My Work is that of Conservation: An Environmental Biography of George Washington Carver, argues that most people have considered Carver in the wrong light for years. Carver advocated for seeing connections between animals and the land, and articulated tenets of organic and sustainable agriculture well before they entered the mainstream. Carver's deep Christian convictions informed his conservationist thinking. He saw the world as something to be revered, studied, and protected from degradation. And ultimately, he thought his life's work was to uplift the lot of Black farmers in the South. But, it was his peanut work which ultimately catapulted him to fame. For years, Carver worked at Tuskegee Institute (now University), under the direction of Booker T. Washington. At Tuskegee, Carver headed up an experimental agriculture station, where he wrote research bulletins and brought demonstrations to the countryside to help impoverished Black sharecroppers and tenant farmers in Macon County, Alabama. In an effort to find a low-cost, high-calorie plant which could be grown for food by sharecroppers, Carver began to promote peanuts. He collated recipes and uses, and enthusiastically espoused the hardy legume. And in Carver, the peanut lobby found a perfect spokesperson to testify in front of the House Ways and Means Committee in 1921, to push for a protective tariff. Carver's role as an expert witness brought fame and stardom, but distorted his impact for generations. Hersey argues that Carver's other work, as a conservationist, should be at the forefront of his legacy. In examining Carver's legacy today in practice, farmers like Nick Speed are reacquainting people with Carver's relationship with the land. Speed runs the nonprofit Ujima and its related entity, the George Washington Carver Farms in St. Louis, Missouri. GWC Farms aims to honor Carver's legacy as a farmer who thought holistically about the land he tended. In understanding Carver as a pioneering Black conservationist, listeners might finally be able to move beyond Carver and the peanut. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Join Hal Herring and Mississippi State University environmental history professor and author of My Work is that of Conservation, An Environmental Biography of George Washington Carver Mark Hersey for a fantastic American conservation story that has never been more relevant than it is right now.  If you finished seventh grade in an American public school, you learned about George Washington Carver, who was born into slavery in Missouri and grew up to be one of America's leading scientists and agronomists, working from his laboratory at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Carver was a friend and advisor to U.S. presidents, including Theodore Roosevelt, and sought out as counsel by some of the best minds in agriculture across the world.     Carver was also one of America's pioneers of the science of ecology and a cutting-edge conservationist who advocated for the restoration of whitetail deer, quail and fisheries, long before such ideas became mainstream. His conservation vision was forged in the fire of his own history and in his life's work in Alabama's post-slavery Black Belt and along the Fall Line, known then as “the most destroyed land in all of the South” -- a place where poverty, injustice and hunger were closely tied to the abuse and collapse of the systems of the earth. Don't miss Hal's fascinating conversation with Mark Hersey.

'Christ in you, the hope of glory!' Writing to the Colossians, Paul is saying that Christ living in us is the living demonstration and proof of what is to come! CHRIST IN US! We have, within our new born-again bodies, the living evidence of ALL the Power, ALL the Glory of the Gospel – it is INCREDIBLE what God has done! Paul concludes here, v28ff, “This is what we preach, warning every man, teaching every man – that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.” When we get into the Kingdom of God at the time of Christ's Second Coming, He will present us before the Father – and He will say, “Father, this is the evidence of My Work”!!! Do you realise?!! On the day of our bodily Resurrection, we come before the Father; Jesus will be there, and He'll say, “Father, this man, this woman, this person – the life that they lived, who and what they are – is the evidence of My Work!!!” We are the living demonstration of Christ's Work in us.

It shall burn out all dross of the mortal mind, smallness of nature, meanness of spirit, vindictiveness, jealousy. It shall burn out all carelessness of your habits, in the outer realms of your being. My Law and My Order can then function perfectly in your life. Then and then only will you be a worthy vessel for the inflow of My Spirit. Then and then only can My Spirit flow through you to other of My children. Likewise shall all disease be burned from the physical body, that nothing shall interfere with My Plan for your life. George Washington Carver is well known to Americans as the Peanut Man. It's been written of him that ‘peanuts were like paintbrushes: They were tools to express his imagination'.If that sounds a bit ridiculous, it's because it is.George Washington Carver was far more radical and innovative than ‘the guy who did stuff with peanuts'.At a time when the scientific consensus was pushing farmers to use more and more chemicals and machinery on their lands, Carver urged them to learn how to farm in harmony with nature. He saw the direct link between the social injustice of the Jim Crow South and the ecological damage being wrought on the landscape. He was a pioneer of ecological farming, a warrior for environmental justice before there was such a thing. Our guest today is Mark Hersey, author of “My Work is that of Conservation: An Environmental Biography of George Washington Carver” and a historian at Mississippi University.Produced by Freddy ChickEdited by Aidan LonerganExecutive Producer is Charlotte LongIf you'd like to learn even more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts, and audiobooks at History Hit - enter promo code PATENTED for a free trial, plus 50% off your first three months' subscription. Wicked problems have been a huge part of our lives! Most of us know that the housing market has been a little crazy for the past few years. Some of that has been due to wicked problems like labor shortages, supply chain issues, and even land shortages in many parts of the country.   The labor shortage has been of interest to many people, me and my guest co-host for today included. So, we decided to do something about it!  I'm Marla, the Green Home Coach! Today I am joined by Will Blake, of Vesta Foundation Solutions in Oklahoma City. Will and I have worked together on several projects.  Today, we are talking about workforce development, particularly in the building industry and skilled trades.  Plumbers Lately, it could take weeks or even months to get a plumber to come out unless it's an emergency, and you are willing to pay double.  A cascading labor shortage The labor shortage in the new build and remodeling industry is cascading! That's because there aren't enough people in the trades, especially the licensed trades.  Licensed trades  We are greying out in the licensed trades. That means that those who have been trained to become the backbone of the industry are retiring. So, why are there no people behind them as they choose to move on with their lives? A shrinking workforce Will's construction company specializes in an unlicenced trade, and even so, they are still experiencing issues with supplies, rising costs, and a shrinking workforce.  Three categories Most people we converse with fit into one of three categories: Nobody wants to work in this category. (This is the largest category.) People in this category are trying to identify generational workplace inequalities or issues with safety, diversity, and inclusion.  People in this category want to know what we are going to do about the situation. (This is the smallest category. Will and I fit in here.) 2025 Almost 20% of our workforce will be aging out by 2025. Many of them will be taking all their knowledge, wisdom, hard skills, operational knowledge, and understanding of vendor relationships with them. Nearly 12% will come in to replace them, but that will be spread across all industries. Additional issues We did not get the population increase we were hoping for after Covid. Closing the borders and slowing down the movement of migrant workers into the country has also added to the problem of not being able to build enough houses. Technology Technology can provide some innovative new housing solutions, but there are still many missing pieces, and technology will not solve the hands-on labor problem. A difficult business Construction is a difficult business. 50% of businesses go out of business in the first five years. But in construction, it happens with 75% of businesses. Purpose Will's company does foundation repair, concrete lifting, wood floor system repair, crawl spaces, and drainage. As a company, they tie its purpose back to the concept of the broken window theory, which is all about caring for infrastructure. So even if their efforts do not directly help the company, they are meant to indirectly support the industry and fix the problem with staffing, supply chain issues, etc. No one to do repairs If no people are available to do the necessary repairs to our homes and businesses, it means that either they won't get done, or the homeowner will have to DIY them. What is the problem? The message for getting people into the construction trade has either been lost or skewed dramatically. Schoolchildren are encouraged to go to college rather than explore careers in the trades even though many people in the trades are earning a lot more than their college counterparts. Build My Future Build My Future OKC is an event put on by the Central OKlahoma Association of Home Builders and it's Professional Women in Building Council. It is a one-day hands-on interactive construction career fair. When I moved back to Oklahoma City from St. Louis, and we got Professional Women in Building going again after being dormant, I told the other members about Build My Future and suggested we make it our signature project. They all agreed. Currently, there are between 25 and 30 Build My Futures taking place across the country to help young people learn about careers in the skilled trades and building industry. Build My Future Build My Future is an event put on by the National Association of Homebuilders. The events are one-day hands-on interactive construction career fairs. Interesting career opportunities There are some exciting and fulfilling career opportunities within the skilled trades, from marketing to sales to administrative to the production side to manufacturing, that provide a great living above the national average without any student debt loans. Go younger One thing that has come up is that we need to go younger because high school students pick a track to follow in the eighth grade. A week-long camp A group of like-minded construction business owners suggested doing a week-long free camp, Construct My Future, to allow kids to learn about various things they can do in the trades. Although they had good intentions and good support initially, things only worked out when they started focusing on seventh and eighth graders rather than high school students. The seventh and eighth graders were very engaged, and their parents also got involved.  Great possibilities A big part of our mission with the Build My Future and Construct My Future programs is to help more people- especially teachers and parents, understand the great possibilities in the skilled trades industry. Will's advice The world is full of opportunities. Will suggests that young people keep an open mind to learning a specialty skill that will be useful everywhere and give a lot of value.   Have a wonderful October and Careers in Construction Month!   Resources Careers in Construction Trades  Careers in Construction Month Toolkit  Build My Future OKC  Build My Future - Get Involved  Build My Future Trainings and Resources  Construct My Future Camp  3 Reasons Workforce Development is Now a (Big) Part of My Work

We meet leading artist Guy J Oliver in his hometown of Margate to discuss video art and film! Guy's award-winning interdisciplinary practice employs video as well as text, painting, collage and performance. We discuss his major film 'You Know Nothing of My Work'. This extraordinary project is a multi-chapter rumination on the cultural dilemma of the disgraced popular icon. Considering how collective, systematic failure led to cases of abuse from powerful figures in the cultural scene, this work proposes a conflict between the enjoyment of and respect for their creative work and what we now know (or at times failed to recognise) about their behaviour. Can we erase the existence of abusive yet influential figureheads, or should we acknowledge and discuss their actions alongside their work? Through a piece that uses elements of film musical and music video traditions within the form of an experimental essay, Oliver takes the pulse of society's reaction to this fast-evolving and contentious subject. You Know Nothing of My Work was commissioned for the Jerwood/ and Film and Video Umbrella Awards 2020. See the work online at Jerwood/FVU Awards 2020: Hindsight | Online ExhibitionWe also discuss 'The Year Everyone Died', a meditative video essay that looks back at the year 2016 and explores the artist's own feelings towards the various deaths that were announced during those twelve months. 2016 appeared to have an unusually high number of well-known figures pass away, from David Bowie at the beginning of the year through to George Michael on Christmas Day and Carrie Fisher on Boxing Day followed by her mother Debbie Reynolds the day after. Guy was recently nominated for the Jarman Award 2021. Inspired by Derek Jarman, the Jarman Award recognises and supports artists working with moving image and celebrates the spirit of experimentation, imagination and innovation in the work of artist filmmakers in the UK. In July 2022, Film London announced Guy was one of its Lodestars 2022, the annual list honouring innovative UK-based creators and practitioners to watch. We also discuss Quench, a project space and gallery in Margate, Kent run by artists Lindsey Mendick and Guy Oliver. When Wired magazine started, they did the weirdest thing a tech magazine could do—they picked a patron saint. Was Marshall McLuhan a digital prophet? Chris interviews Nick Ripatrazone, author of Digital Communion: Marshall McLuhan's Spiritual Vision for a Virtual Age (2022). Nick is the Culture Editor for Image and a Contributing Editor for the Catholic Herald. Find out why McLuhan, in his mid-20s, left his nominal Baptist upbringing for a robust Catholic faith. Plus, are smartphones the new stained glass window?  In the book, Ripatrazone writes, "For McLuhan, mass media was a form of Mass. When we communicate electronically, not only do we send information; we send ourselves." He unpacks this idea more fully in this episode. Afterward, Adam and Chris discuss how digital media provides a kind of "secular" communion, and whether McLuhan's uniquely Christian metaphor ultimately breaks down. Finally, find out whether Nick thinks the digital age requires us to reimagine the sacraments in a virtual world. LINKS Nick's book is Digital Communion: Marshall McLuhan's Spiritual Vision for a Virtual Age. Marshall McLuhan's books include Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, The Medium is the Massage, and The Gutenberg Galaxy. "Just as a lamp in a windless place does not flicker, so the disciplined mind of a yogi remains steady in meditation on the Self."-Bhagavad Gita Chapter 6:19"As the golden flame of the candle burns steadily, without flicker or wavering, so shall My Flame burn ever more in your heart. As the sigh of your spirit disturbs the flame and makes the candle drip, so the faintest wavering of your feet from the path of attainment causes a less steady burning of My Flame in your heart, and My Work goes on in imperfection. Oh, My Beloved, how necessary that you live with the eye single, to the high purpose of your calling. But you have many helpers. No soul who enters the path is left to walk alone. So go on, day by day, with the light and assurance of My Love in your face. Mighty Ones whom you see not, are by your side. And the forces of darkness shall touch you not."-Eva Bell Werber, ‘Quiet Talks the Master'"Dear God, help me to not lose sight of your presence when things are going well." -UnknownToday's Practice:Watch Love the way you'd watch an unexpected lizard friend on the wall of your bedroom! 35 Principles for 35 Years

The Swyx Mixtape

This is a narrated version of my blogpost. You can share the tweet thread version here!---I turn 35 today. Here are 35 principles I have accumulated and try to live by: Life is too Short for Short Term Games. We only have so many years for long term games to compound. Writing is Stupendously High Leverage. It helps to organize my thoughts and learning (aka Building My Second Brain). I win even if nobody reads me. It enables me to share great ideas even while I sleep (as a Friendcatcher). I am constantly shocked at the caliber of people that read my work and DM me their thoughts. There is absolutely no other way I would be on their radar. Blogging helped me sell $4k worth of an empty PDF on the day I decided to write my book because people trusted me. It's led to multiple job opportunities from great companies (e.g. Netlify, AWS, Temporal) that I would have otherwise struggled to be hired at. Learn in Public. Most of you know me for this one... (read up if you're new round here, welcome!) Good Enough is Better than Best. In a world of infinite abundance, you can lose yourself constantly chasing the hottest new thing. Satisfice rather than Maximize. Less is More. Minimalism wins: Subtracting is harder than Adding. Quantity reduces perceived quality. Depth and whitespace stand out. (yes I realize the irony of this principle in a list of 35) Create Clarity. Simple Explanations of What, Why, and How are extremely  Optimize for Change. Optimizing for anything else tends to make systems MORE fragile, not less. If you learn only one lesson from React and GraphQL, learn this. https://overreacted.io/optimized-for-change/ Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood. Don't get defensive about your point of view or perception of reality - understand theirs first. Either you will learn something new or you'll understand how to better get your point across. Hold multiple perspectives in your head and be able to summarize the best arguments of all major parties in a way that THEY agree with. Praise in Public, Criticize in Private. As satisfying as it might be to dump on someone publicly, I need to remember how it makes them feel. Everything is not awesome, and I despise fake positivity. But I can either help or make them feel bad about it and the former is more effective than the latter. Exception for companies and people that are actively harming or misleading the vulnerable. Build an Empathy Check Habit. I can't take back an impulsive response that hurts someone. When I can't check with trusted friends, I need to think before I tweet. People remember how you made them feel, before what you said. A good story has more power than a good argument. Treat Others How They Want To Be Treated. The Golden Rule is -sadly- not good enough when your privilege is higher or expectations are lower than others'. Time for The Platinum Rule. Complete Truths are Not Welcome. Most people are more interested in... being entertained sharing outrage feeling good about themselves defending their reputation ...than debating truth or improving themselves. Trying to change them is ineffectual. Let them be, and seek out like minds. Organize IRL Events. You can do a lot to create excitement and connection in a community simply by organizing dinners and meetups and conferences. Svelte Society started on a whim exactly like this. Now there are thousands of members drawn to the Svelte community that wouldn't have before. Don't offer unsolicited help. Make Sure Help Is Wanted Before Offering It. Men - be especially wary about this when women are talking about their problems. Sometimes they just need support, not solutions. (But sometimes it really IS about The Nail...) Ask For Help More. People are happy to help and like you more when they have helped you. Don't worry about showing weakness; you are getting something far more valuable in return. Use a Help Timeout. Log Your Wins. e.g. when you ship something big or small, or when someone says nice things about you. They can help when you are feeling emotionally down, or when writing a brag document. Help others celebrate their wins too. P.S. a brag slack channel can serve as an OLTP store of personal wins. Don't End The Week With Nothing. The reason you don't see any of my work prior to 2017 is because I thought it was sufficient to just work hard at my finance job. Now all of my intellectual output from my 20's - some of the best research and writing I have ever done - is locked up in some mailbox somewhere. Never again. Pick Up What They Put Down. Guarantee feedback by giving feedback. https://www.swyx.io/PUWTPD Speak Succinctly. Stop speaking in trailing sentences and double-barreled questions. Set the general direction and shut up. If they're off-track, interject. This is preferable to preempting all conversation paths to show how smart you are. Optimize for Retention, not Consumption. We are the sum total of still-relevant knowledge we still remember, not the total of the volume of content we consume. Illustrate Your Point. Adding code samples or drawing 2x2's and system diagrams makes your idea much more effective. A picture IS worth a thousand words! Even this shitty example works, you can do better than me. Separate Your Identity from Your Work. You can learn a lot on the Internet for the low, low price of $YOUR_EGO. Build Tools For Yourself. This is a superpower and a sandbox all rolled in one that is guaranteed to make you happy. Collect Questions Obsess on collecting good answers and you might be precise but irrelevant. Obsess on collecting good questions and you will be approximately right. My Work-in-Progress list of questions here, but see also the Reverse Interview repo and Feynman's 12 Problems. Systems > Goals. "You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." — James Clear Play Games You Cannot Win. Our world is full of "winnable" games - likes, retweets, #1 of the day, employee of the month. External motivators destroy our intrinsic drive. You don't play infinite games to win. Only way to keep childlike creativity is to play games that you cannot win. Use Your Calendar as a Todo List. Normal todo lists don't force you to make tradeoffs. Sequence your work, set limits, and know when to decline or delegate tasks. When time block planning, eat your frog: Put First Things First. Practice Stoicism. It'll never stay as great as you want, it's never really as bad as you feel. This, too, shall pass. Have a Productivity Keystone. If you start a day unproductive, you are extremely likely to be unproductive the rest of the day. Instead, start off with something productive that you do every morning, you reinforce the idea that today is going to be a productive day. Incorporate. Companies pay expenses before taxes, People pay taxes before expenses. (Singapore is pretty great if you have this choice). Stay in the Game. Berkshire Hathaway originally had a third partner, Rick Guerin. He got caught out with margin loans and had to sell out. Warren and Charlie survived 14 recessions. https://www.swyx.io/psychology-of-money/ Don't Skimp On Your Equipment. Spending a few hundred dollars on your keyboard and monitor setup will save tens of thousands of physiotherapy and pain in future. Earn White Collar, Spend Blue Collar. Don't let your expenses rise as fast as your income - you probably don't need what you're thinking of buying. Spend part of your white collar income making up for white collar downsides - gym, group classes, personal trainer. Always Turn Lessons To Principles. When we make mistakes or have great success, we should form them into principles so we can write them down and learn from or repeat them. It is the only way for past versions of you to communicate lessons to future you.

We talked a lot about mindset, attitude and beliefs.  When did you realize attitude and belief was a critical part of sales and sales leadership?MB:Attitude- I had crippling anxiety, self doubt- Remove my ego from the problem solving and getting myself out of the way.Make is less about me and more about My Work - helped me improve my overall attitude Always want to iterate to reduce anxiety and improve myself and do that in a way that initiates changeMindset- working at AOL, Manager → Director, fellow manager had the BIGGEST deals one after another after another. How is this guy closing such bigger deals?  He didn’t have Self limiting belief that it was a BIG DEALPresent the best solution and see it as possibleShe had Seed & Grow mentality which was a self-limiting beliefNew sellers come in and don’t have Self-limiting belief holding the line on the sale, discounting, ASPIt’s really interesting to see how mindset plays into your sales game. Something she still works on, always looking to iterate and improveAlways checking in on my mindset and my own self-limiting beliefs to see where I can iterate and improve even as my role changes. JB: Interesting to see how those fundamental mindsets of sellers can lead to performance in any industry, role, etc. Some resources and books that you’ve looked at throughout your career that have been instrumental in helping you build this belief system that leads to your success. MB:Books and resources - Worklife with Adam Grant podcast- what makes really great teams?Daily Show - psychological safetyThe Problem with All-stars- Great teams may have B players that make A Players betterScaleUp With Reid HoffamnTim Ferris Sometimes hot and cold - but focus on peak performance, what do people do to be their best selves?Oprah Super Soul SundaysTony RobbinsIt’s all about my own Self-iterationJB: Talk to me about your other groups you connect with as a woman in sales. Many people have a work self and home self that are very different and makes it difficult to be fulfilled in work.  Empathy comes up in sales a lot lately.  What has led to a change in how we show up in sales?MB:Employee retention makes a big difference. Happy employees= more productive employees = happier customers = employee retention = bottom line impactCreate a culture where employees bring their best selves to workFirst daughter 8 weeks off, 12 weeks off for 2nd - worked in the middle of it - was attending something the first week after having her daughter- had fear she would lose her job or progressing her career. I’ve been very lucky to work at companies that I know support my wellbeing and what my direct manager says to me and how they support me as well as the team around meAs a woman and the only female leader, felt like the outlier where other people had to pick up her slack when she went on leavingHaving leaders that say “we’ve got your back” Empathy and support You can have empathy but if you don’t pair that with support you’re in troubleJB: What are the qualities you look for in the best leaders you’ve spent time with?MB:Support, knowing that somebody believes in me and is there for my development.Psychological safety and a partner for your success knowing you are there to help meA high bar and expectation of performanceWorking smarter, not harderResiliencyLeaders who build great teams, not just the people that report to you. Your cross-functional partners and key stakeholders. Can you create a team environment?Personal connection, we are humans. Checking in when you hear something personal, not just because it’s a checkbox, it’s because I know they are actually invested in my personal lifeJB: Do you love winning or hate losing more?MB:This is a tough won, I  enjoy winning and hates losingI hate losing more, that eats at me -- you can taste a win then on to the next oneJB: What is your favorite interview question?MB:Where could you be better? Find someone with a growth mindset- the future for someone.  Trying to get wisdom, tips and best practices. To hear someone working on their growth and where they are going.  What are their gaps and how can she help create a plan or partner with them. JB: Any tips or advice for folks moving into a leadership role?MB:Be a student of iteration, constantly learning and evolving. Looking at yourself leading a team and where you can do better.  HOW WILL YOU CHECK ON THAT? Hold yourself accountable every 30 days, every quarter, bi-annual and annually moving towards your own personal growth, development and measuring it.Super helpful separating ego from work! A lot of anxiety came from taking it personally when work wasn’t going well. Sometimes it IS personal, other times may be rough business model or external factors. I quit Instagram and all social media until I find Shingie The Photographer. As you might have guessed, I'll be sharing why I'm deciding to quit social media. I'm excited, scared, and nervous to share my thoughts on why I'll be leaving my social platforms. All through the year 2020, I've been consciously and subconsciously preparing myself for this step in my journey. It's been a blessing and a curse being on all platforms and performing well on all of them. I'm incredibly grateful to have grown drastically on all these platforms over the years and I truly do see value in them but, for my journey, I need to step away in order to find myself. Creating content is extremely important to me but understand and knowing why I create the work I create is far more important to me. Through this big change, I'd like to know who Shingie "The photographer" truly is because I create fantastic images but they are "just good photos" unfortunately. I want to pick up my camera without feeling the need to pick up my camera. I truly believe, my work will never be timeless unless I make this step. Being a photographer first before a YouTuber is extremely important to me because I do not aspire to be a YouTuber all my life as much as I aspire to be a photographer all my life. I'll explain more in the podcast, enjoy and let's start this new journey together. My Work: http://shotbyshingie.com Clothing & Presets: http://waybetterco.com

In this episode, I answer the questions: What is Authenticity? What's the difference between a Job and Work? Why Does Authenticity Matter to My Work? What are Signs that I'm Not Working Authentically? I will also give you a few tips on starting the journey of adding more authenticity to your work. About the Podcast: Every person has something beautiful and unique to contribute to this world through their work. When it's not allowed to show up, they miss out and the world misses out. The Authentic Work podcast exists to give you permission to be you, and teaches you the skills and strategies necessary to align the inner you with the outer you so that you feel empowered to add your one-of-a-kind signature to your work and life. About Me: As a psychologist, I loved helping people. However, I wanted to do more to enrich and enable the everyday experience. My understanding of people and process, and experience supporting teams, made becoming a Teaming Strategist a natural fit. As a Teaming Strategist I help courageous people build skills to transform their teams so that they can experience enjoyment from work. What brings me joy is when others experience joy from doing what they were born to do. Website: https://www.teamingstrategy.com/ Instagram: @teamingstrategist

Aloha friends and thank you for listening to another show of my podcast. I decided to do a solo show to exercise and remove some of the thought demons dwelling on the inside who demanded to see the light of day. In all reality, I wanted to reflect and share my thoughts on the seven powerful guests I've recently had on since my little podcast experiment took a turn into what it is today. Additionally, I wanted to give you my thoughts on the state of the world today as the pandemic enters it's next planned phase, agenda 21 as whole, and how we can actively push for a better planet by accepting some uncomfortable truths without necessarily accepting the narrative given to us as the way it has to be in this "new normal."Social credit scores, vaccines, ufos, aliens, smart cities, technocratic corporatism and the trace act are also discussed. Plus, I offer up a personal challenge for us all at the end. Also, you can find links to other episodes, some articles I've written and of course my book, "Lucid Sacred Dreams" which is available in paperback and Digital format below.-My Work-

Prayer is God’s invitation to enter into His presence.  Everything flows from the presence of God. “You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”  Psalm 16:11   MY NEED . . . Genuine prayer is admitting to God that you desperately need Him. “ . . . for apart from me you can do nothing.”  John 15:5b   “I lift my eyes up to the hills.  From where does my help come?  My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.”  Psalm 121:1-2    MY WORK . . . Prayer is work because pressing into Jesus requires pushing against the enemy.  “Satan’s greatest fear is the presence of God.  When God shows up in power, Satan must flee—not just walk away, but run.  So he continually tempts us to do anything that will abort God’s presence.”  Bill Elliff, The Presence-Centered Church   Satan has a way of making the moment seem more appealing than God’s presence.  “And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.”  Genesis 3:8   What may be keeping you from pressing into the presence of God is your pursuit of the garden but not the God of the garden.  What may be keeping you from desiring to press into the presence of God is your shame.   “Jesus knows the battle. He fought it all the way to the end. And he defeated the monster every time.”  John Piper   GOD’S PROMISE . . . The diligent work of prayer is never wasted.  (Revelation 8:1-5)

Douglas Coupland: Well, thanks for having me. Kelton Reid: If you aren’t familiar with Doug’s work, I’d be surprised, but he’s an artist, designer, international bestselling author of novels, short stories, biography, quite a bit of journalism out there in the world, I think. Yeah, you’ve worked in the visual arts, you’ve done a lot of design work, and I’m guessing that you did the artwork for your new book, the cover and … Douglas Coupland: Oh, yeah. Kelton Reid: I’m looking at the back of Bit Rot, the brand new collection of stories and essays, and your face is just kind of hovering there behind the blurbs, which is kind of cool. Douglas Coupland: The whole author photo thing is just so corny and out of date. Usually most people just go to Google Images and see, Okay, got it, and that’s all they need. The cover, yes, I did do myself. Everyone thinks I used to do all my covers but I didn’t. Finally, the one where they sent me was just so dismal, I said, “You know what, I’m doing it.” How a Visual Artist Became a Generation-Defining Fiction Author Kelton Reid: I think it turned out very well. To say that you wear a lot of hats would be an understatement. Clearly, you do many different things. You’re kind of a … I wouldn’t really know how to sum it up. I mean, looking at your resume is very intimidating, but as a writer, you had this pretty storied career, and I’d love to take you back a little bit, maybe for listeners who aren’t familiar with your amazing journey. Can you take us back maybe to those moments before Generation X was commissioned and kind of all that craziness happened to you. How you got here, how you became this best selling author, of now I think it’s 13 novels, and all these other fantastic works. How did you get here, Doug? Douglas Coupland: I think my story is similar to most other people I ve met who write long form fiction, which is that they were doing, and I was doing, something completely unconnected to writing, and then somewhere around 28 or so, something clicks in and, “Oh, I think I should maybe write some long form fiction”. I don’t think I ever met a writer who came directly out of the creative writing program or a masters lit program. There’s something about the world we’re living. I went to art school and trained in sculpture and typography and spent a lot of time living in Japan, working there. I never really thought of words, one way or the other, and then in ’87, back when answering machines were still a big thing, like, “Now we got an answering machine”, I bought one and plugged it in and the first call I got was the editor of the local city magazine. “Come on down. We want you to write for us.” I’m a little … “I hadn’t written a thing in my life.” “Well, I read the postcard you sent to Don’s wife. It was on a refrigerator at a party last night. It was really funny so we think you should write for us.” “Okay”, and then two days later I was down in Beverly Hills, writing about this art called Scoundrel. Spent three days there, wrote the story in one day and, this was back when journalism paid a lot and, “Wait, wait. You mean, I had a lot of fun and enjoyed writing it, and I get paid for it?” At the time I had a big sculpture studio in Vancouver. Anything to do with sculpture is expensive because it’s third dimension and the prices of materials and … Anyhow, it became a very quick enjoyable way of paying my studio bills. Then I realized there was something deeper that was going on. I went to Toronto about six months later and took a job working the business magazine as a junior staffer. Probably between that first phone call and moving out to middle of nowhere to write Generation X was maybe 18 months. That was all it took to go from zero to fiction. I look back on that period of my life and what I remember most about it was chronic fatigue syndrome, which I don’t even know if it exists anymore. For that 18 month window, I’d wake up every morning and around an hour after waking up, I’d ugh, like being unplugged or something, and yet I got so much stuff done. It ended one day magically when I started writing fiction, so maybe there’s a connection there somewhere. Kelton Reid: Interesting, interesting. Since then, since that trip to the desert, Coachella, I believe. Douglas Coupland: Everyone knows about Coachella now, but back then it was this completely undiscovered, sort of Nixon era fantasy underneath a glass dome, meaning it wasn’t mid century, it wasn’t gay, it wasn’t trendy, it wasn’t Coachella. It was just this place where time froze, somewhere around when Pat Nixon had a bowl of Special K in 1971 or something. It was not the Coachella that people know now. Kelton Reid: The one that people are dropping exorbitant amounts of money to go and visit and do drugs and all that stuff. Douglas Coupland: The weather was just appalling. Kelton Reid: Since then, you’ve published, I believe it’s 13 novels, collections of short stories, eight nonfiction books … I mean the list here is pretty intimidating, and a lot of scripts, both screen and stage, including a TV show that you produced, I believe. That’s pretty, pretty exciting. A lot of successes there. So, looks like the best place to find all of that agglomerated in one spot is your fantastic website, Coupland.com, and I’ll link to that. Is there anywhere else we want to point listeners to to see your work? I mean, it’s everywhere. Douglas Coupland: I do a monthly column for the Financial Times of London Weekend Magazine. That’s out there. I mean, it looks like I do a lot, but in my head, I feel almost like I got locked-in syndrome. I really feel like I’m wasting my life, that I’m not using my time properly. Even picking up a sock is like, “Why am I picking it up?” It’s like I could be doing more permanent with that amount of energy. It’s just gotten kind of weird inside my head lately. I’m finding it very hard to read. I don’t know if that’s something you’re experiencing as well, or if it’s just me, or is it some massive phenomenon where reading fiction on a Kindle or a book is just like, “Oh, get to the point.” It’s not fast enough. I feel like a terrible human being for reading a fraction of what I used to read in a period of, like in a month. Where did that part of my brain go? Is it me? Is it everyone? Is it all this, you know, the cloud? Where is this coming from? Why Listeners of This Show Have Won the Biggest Lottery in History Kelton Reid: For sure, for sure. It’s interesting that you say that, because I know you write a lot of about it, and in your observations of the modern contemporary syndrome that we’re all kind of facing, this speeded up, fast food of the brain, nation and world. With all this inter-connectedness, how do writers really stay focused and research? So, let’s talk about your process. How do you stay focused and actually produce writing for your column and then anything else you’re working on. Are you working on another book now or are you turned to more visual stuff? Douglas Coupland: Writing takes place in time, and artwork largely takes place in space so I think it comes from separate and non-competing parts of the id, or the brain, or however you want to describe that sort of thing. I began writing this column, I guess you’d call it serial nonfiction. Every month I take a subject and analyzed it. I was very nervous in doing so because I’ve never actually done that kind of nonfiction before. It turns out I really loved doing it and I didn’t expect that. I’m happy it happened and now I find a lot of energies going to nonfiction. A TV project I’m working on right now, as we’re all living the golden age of television and I’d like to be part of that. I’ve always enjoyed being in the world and out of the world. Every year I take on two or three completely unrelated writing projects because I meet people I would never otherwise have met and go to places that I would never would have otherwise been and experience all this life. I don’t know how old you are. I’m 55, and what I’m finding amazing is that it just goes so quickly. When I look in the mirror, “That’s not me!” Think of all the planet we live on, and then the sun and all these galaxies. There’s trillions of them. Each galaxy has a million stars and there’s all this matter out there and antimatter. Out of all that matter, like you and me, and if you’re listening, all the matter in the entire universe, we got to experience life, whatever this thing called life is. It’s literally winning the biggest lottery in the universe, and knowing that, having the sentience to appreciate it, how we going to get the most of having been alive, or being alive here? It seems like this, not so much a gift, but a responsibility, I think. Which is why I always take on all these crazy projects and go to Russia, yeah, Russia, why not, for six weeks to do something. When I say it keeps life interesting, it, actually more than a figure of speech, it keeps this magical thing called life interesting. I think that’s my philosophy. I have a home base here. I live in Vancouver. I’m away about half the time. I go out and have adventures and I come back. I think of myself as just an adventurer, maybe in a certain old-fashioned tradition. As the times change, as I change, fiction’s a part of it, but it’s fiction reconfigured into other formats, again like long form television, or nonfiction, which is quasi-fictional. Bit Rot, which is the book we re here to discuss, I guess, is compilation of nonfiction pieces I’ve done, some published, some not. Fiction, which I thought was experimental, but as time goes on, I think it’s fiction that I want to create in the reader that same sense of weird magic you get when you’re online and you fall down a rabbit hole and suddenly you’re looking at a model railroad in the Czech Republic and then like vroom, you’re looking at Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Wikipedia page or something. I think that is very much a part of the modern experience, so how does fiction reflect that? I don’t believe, I think, in some writers who are notorious for bunkering themselves and turning out the lights and focusing purely on the words. I used to do that a little bit, but now I think, No, no, no. You’re out in the world, write about the world as you inhabit it, so that’s what I do. How a Canadian Professor in the 60s Predicted the Influence of the Internet We Know Today Kelton Reid: You’ve actually written about it, and I’ll link to this piece, I’m actually at my happiest when I’m writing on a plane. I think it sums up what you’re talking about. You’ve written about this often, how everything has been turned into this, again, this fractal sense of what you said about falling down a rabbit hole. So it sounds like your writing process is pretty broken up, but it’s working for you because obviously, it traverses a lot of that terrain. There’s so much in there and it’s been called binge-worthy reading of the Coupland brain. Yeah, it’s so cool that it really is capturing everything that you’re talking about, this ephemeral nature of where we are now. I have the McLuhan biography that you wrote here. I was just checking it out as a reference and he was talking about that moment that I think we’re all experiencing right now so- Douglas Coupland: The thing about Marshall McLuhan is most people under the age of 40 really probably don’t know him, or much about him. He has the two famous sound bites. There was “We all live in a global village” and “The medium is the message”. So he was this crusty fuddy duddy guy who was teaching at the University of Toronto in Canada in 1962. He was quite retrograde. He was quite religious. He didn’t really like the physical world very much, but through a chain of never-to-be-repeated circumstances, he was able to anticipate the Internet, and what it would feel like and how it would change the way our sentences work. Tom Wolfe famously wrote an essay where, I think it was Esquire, called What If He s Right? back in the early ’60s. What’s happened is McLuhan was right about almost everything, except he didn’t know the interface of what this new thing was going to look like, or feel like. So he’ll use 18th century pamphleteers in England to describe what we would now call PayPal, or eBay, or online dating. He actually anticipated the pornography explosion. He said that the world would be turned into a bordello without any walls. That was like his He had to approach everything metaphorically or through literary culture, which made him sound kind of nuts, but if you can be right up to 2017, the chances are he’s going to be right as we move further on. I got dragged kicking and screaming doing that biography, but I’m really glad I did. Kelton Reid: Yeah, that’s pretty fascinating, that you can try and do that and then do fiction. Are you turning to episodic TV as an outlet for the part of your brain that wants to do fiction? Or are you actually working on another piece of longer fiction now? Douglas Coupland: I’m working on, I call it 100 sermons, but I think maybe I’ll make it 99, ’cause 99 is a more interesting number. And I m actually doing, I suppose you would say, secular theology, addressing head on the ins and out and ups and downs of the soul, or trying to locate the soul. The art world, they talk about imminence, I suppose you would talk about that in alternate worlds as well. That’s where all the philosophers always get hung up and start becoming angels dancing on the heads of pins. I think most of us have this sensation that there is a holiness that pervades certainly life on Earth, and we talked about a bit earlier, but how does that holiness operate? I’m also very scientific, so is it the gravitational field? Or is it an inaccuracy, like one of the up or down quarks? How does holiness exists? I believe it does, but I’m also agnostic so … I think that’s where 100, excuse me, 99 sermons is coming from. I know Stephin Merritt was actually going to write his 100 love songs except the project came to an organic conclusion. He called it 69 love songs, which was sort of cheeky. So who knows what the number will finally be. That’s what I’m working on now. The Magic of Writing on Airplanes Kelton Reid: It sounds like you’re a writer who just kind of … You’re practicing some kind of productive procrastination, that s something that Austin Kleon talks about. He’s also a visual artist who’s a writer and he has an office where he’s got three different desks set up so he’s doing the visual art, then he’s doing the writing part, and then he just will kind of move from one thing to the other as the muse pulls him around the room. Is that how you find yourself working? I know you talk about writing on planes, you talk about writing, if you’re on a deadline, you’re working in a hotel room oftentimes. Douglas Coupland: Writing is, I think, best done in the morning before everyone arrives at the studio or other workers arrive. You ve got that magic lucidity window of maybe two and a half hours. That’s where most conception happens. The only other place I can really conceive … there’s two other places. One is on an airplane, which is great, because there’s no wi-fi, to be honest, and there’s this super focus. Also, it’s a chemical thing. You get one or two glasses of white wine on a plane with decreased oxygen and it’s like magic. The words just flow and then of course, two hours later, it’s over. The third place I like to get writing done is in the International House of Pancakes on the north side of Interstate 15 in Las Vegas. I had this tradition of starting books there. So I’ll go down, I’ll check into my booth. Yes, that’s right, a writer who has a superstition, who’d have thought? I like to begin it there. Las Vegas used to be this piddly little thing and now it s just morphed into this massive place but the IHOP continues to exist, so I will continue going there. Kelton Reid: That’s awesome. I will ask you about writer’s block. How do you feel about it? Is it a thing? Have you ever experienced it? Is it a myth? Douglas Coupland: Oh, writer’s block is real. I don’t know of any other profession that has an analogous syndrome. The thing about writer’s block is that, obviously you can’t write, but you perpetualize it, you catastrophize it, and “Oh, my god, I can’t write, my life is over.” Of course, it always comes back in the end. I’m curious to hear what other writers have to say on this subject. I think in the end it’s probably something really banal, but beneath surface, like maybe you changed your brand of B vitamins or something. I think they forgot to put B6 in a new batch or something. I think that … is it Occam’s Razor?… the easiest to answer is probably the right answer. I think it s something very of-the-world which causes writer’s block, unless it’s cosmic. You’re always bargaining in your head, maybe it is something, oh curse those muses. The Importance of Doing What You Enjoy Kelton Reid: I know that the writers that I’ve spoken to kind of run the gamut from it’s total bullsh*t. It’s kind of like impotence. We don’t talk about it, but it is real. Before we wrap up here, do you think you can define creativity in your own words? I know so much of what you do involves some elements of creativity. Douglas Coupland: Creativity? A few things come to mind. My hair went gray and white prematurely and so I look a lot wiser than I maybe am. I get asked to do these speeches for graduation ceremonies. The question I get a lot, mostly from the parents who are worried about their kids, is, “You know, what can we do to future proof the kids?” “What do you mean?” “Well, there’s this assault of new technologies coming from every direction, impacting all parts of our human experience. How can you make yourself safe from all that?” What I say is, “You have to find out what it is you enjoy doing and then do it. If you don’t enjoy doing it and you succeed, you’ll be contemptuous of your success and you won’t enjoy it. You have to accept that maybe you enjoy something that’s not going to make you a billion dollars. Maybe, you like working with shoes, just work with shoes.” There’s something about the creation of new images I’ve always liked, and whatever it takes me to get me there is what I do. I like creating new ways of working with words, ditto. I think they should have a course starting in kindergarten, “What do you like doing?” You might have students who spend 12, 13 years and they might still don’t figure it out what it is they like doing. Okay, well, get working in advertising then. Also, the other thing too, if you have 10 ideas, one of them is going to be a hit, one of them is going to be an absolute disaster, two of them will be pretty good and two will be like eh, one or two will be like, Don’t talk about it, and one is just a flaming disaster. So sometimes people get the flaming disaster first and they just have to realize it’s actually more of a probabilistic situation. That if they try it again they’ll probably get one of the better responses. It’s so easy for me to psych myself out with people in general, and I don’t know where that comes from, but whenever I find myself trying to psych myself out then I should really be doing it. For example, the Marshall McLuhan biography, I was like, “Uh, why do I uhhhh.” Phone calls to my agent and stuff. I learned so much from that experience. Yeah, just shake it up. Not everything’s gonna work, not everything’s gonna fail. It’s a mix. Kelton Reid: Words of wisdom from Douglas Coupland, whose fantastic new collection traverses the workings of Doug’s brain, more than 65 thought-provoking essays, stories, and meditations on the different ways in which 20th century notions of the future are being shredded. Finally, do you have any advice for your fellow scribes on how to keep the ink flowing and the cursor moving? Douglas Coupland: One thing I noticed about publishing or being published … where it’s been going on like 28 years now for me, is that it’s always been just as hard to get published as it is right now. That if it’s not one thing then it’s another, but it’s almost like Avogadro’s number or Pi or something, that the difficulty in getting published factor. In some ways it’s easier now, some ways it’s harder, but it averages out about the same amount. So I don’t think you can say there was once a golden age of new writers getting published. It’s always been the same. Kelton Reid: Yes, and thank you so much for taking the time. We really appreciate you doing this, and best of luck with all your future endeavors. Please come back and talk with us again. Douglas Coupland: It’s a joy to have met you. Thanks a lot, Kelton. Kelton Reid: Thanks so much for joining me on another tour of the writer’s process. #010 - Sean McCabe had become a successful hand lettering artist, with clients paying him thousands for design work, but he felt another need. After sharing his lettering work online, he started getting emails from people wondering where to even start with hand lettering. He put a tutorial on his website and within a year 200,000 people had viewed it.
