Angela engages in a heartfelt conversation with Sarah Rusbatch, an expert on women's relationships with alcohol. As Sarah shares her journey of over a thousand days of sobriety, they delve into the concept of "grey area drinking," where individuals may not identify as alcoholics but still experience negative consequences from their drinking habits. They also highlight the unique challenges women face, including societal pressures, hormonal influences, and the impact of alcohol on mental health and relationships KEY TAKEAWAYS: Grey area drinking refers to a spectrum of alcohol consumption where individuals may not identify as alcoholics but still experience negative consequences from their drinking habits. This includes using alcohol for stress relief or social confidence, leading to a reliance that can affect self-esteem and overall well-being. Women are more vulnerable to the health risks associated with alcohol due to physiological differences, such as lower levels of the enzyme that metabolises alcohol. This can lead to increased risks of alcohol-related diseases, including breast cancer, especially as women age and experience hormonal changes. When individuals stop drinking, it can take up to two years for neurotransmitters like GABA and dopamine to rebalance after years of alcohol use. This imbalance can lead to increased anxiety and stress, making it crucial to find alternative ways to manage stress and promote relaxation. Stopping alcohol consumption can create social hurdles, as many individuals find themselves in circles of other drinkers. This can lead to feelings of isolation or fear of being perceived as boring. BEST MOMENTS "Gray area drinking describes the place between someone who rarely drinks and someone who has physical dependency." "I believe alcohol keeps women small and it erodes their self-confidence and their self-belief." "You do need somebody. I always say, don't do it alone." "The irony is most people drink alcohol to relieve their stress." Some questions asked during this episode: Is alcohol the best approach when wanting to destress after a hectic day? What are the less obvious signs that we may be drinking too much/often? What do you say to those who reference ‘everything in moderation'? https://180nutrition.com.au/ Each episode we cut to the chase as we hang out with real people with real results. Over to Sarah. Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome Sarah Rusbatch to the podcast. Sarah, how are you? Sarah (01:09) I'm very well, thanks. How are you? Stu (01:10) Yeah, good. Really, really good. Excited to get into this particular topic today because I know that alcohol in particular is close to many people's hearts and there are lots of nuances where alcohol is concerned. So I think that you'll be the perfect person to expand on that. But first up, for all of our listeners that may not be familiar with you or your work, I'd love it if you could just tell us a little bit about yourself please. Sarah (01:37) Thank you for the introduction. So I'm Sarah Rusbatch. I'm from the UK. I live over in Perth in Western Australia, and I'm a Gray Area Drinking Coach, which is probably not a job title that many people have heard of before. When people ask me what I do, I'm always like, should I give the long answer or the short answer? Because it's not a title that people go, "Oh yeah, I know exactly what that is." So maybe I can start off by explaining to you what is gray area drinking? For full transcript and interview:https://180nutrition.com.au/180-tv/sarah-rusbatch-interview/

Sarah has successfully supported thousands of women to achieve this and is a passionate ambassador for women's health. On this episode of Last Drinks, Maz talk to sobriety advocate and alcohol coach Sarah Rusbatch about why women are effected by alcohol more than men. Sarah shares some insightful (and kind of hectic) stats on women drinkers in Australia and drops the bombshell that Australian is (officially) the booziest nation in the world. So with so many people struggling with their relationship with alcohol, Maz & Sarah unpacks the physiology of why women can't handle alcohol well especially in mid-life and how taking a month off, to reset the baselines and explore sobriety is a good idea on many levels. If you think you might drink a bot too much, or a lot too much, maybe signing up for a Alcohol Free Challenge is a good idea, where you'll receive dedicated coaching, support and practical tools on how to explore sobriety in a safe sharing space. You can sign up for Sarah's next challenge here: https://sarahrusbatch.com/30day-af-program/#joinYou can order Maz's book here: https://www.mazcompton.com/book Hosted on Acast. The morning Sarah Rusbatch realised that her relationship with alcohol needed to change, she woke up in blood stained bed sheets with her 5 year old daughter peering at her face asking her what had happened. This sounds like an extreme story, but Sarah says that her relationship with alcohol would be familiar to SO many of us. BUT the night before she'd been at a 40th birthday party where the wine was flowing, she'd nipped outside for a cigarette and when she reached down to stub it out, she toppled over her heels and landed face first on the concrete. I'm sure you have a similar story - one where a few two many drinks has left you feeling anxious & embarrassed. I know I do. Sarah says that morning left her with an overwhelming feeling that there was another way of living. In 2019 she quit booze completely & is now an accredited Grey Area Drinking Coach. In this episode we are joined by Sarah Rusbatch, a certified Grey Area Drinking Coach. We dived into her relationship with alcohol, she shares her journey from being a busy working woman in London with loads of alcohol fuelled ventures, to moving over the other side of the world to Perth and raising a family, in which alcohol started becoming a way to deal with certain life challenges she faced with her relocation, leading to her giving up alcohol entirely. We learn about grey area drinking from Sarah, what it is and where an individual can grade themselves on a scale of 1 to 10. What are the signs of you being a grey area drinker and what solutions can you implement to combat such problems. Sarah is now coaching others to re-examine their relationship with alcohol and learn more about themselves, encouraging her clients to find what can bring them a dopamine tickle as opposed to a dopamine punch like alcohol does. 'Don't be silly, it's just one drink.' Or is it? There's a vast gap between sobriety and alcoholism, but where is the elusive line in the sand where our relationship with this widely accepted substance becomes problematic. Is it only when we wake up in the morning and can't function without alcohol? Is it only when our loved ones view us as an alcoholic? Surely it's only when we have to go to meetings, right? Or if we look more closely, is there a real 'grey area' in our drinking habits where numbing and self-destruction is the silent norm? Did you know that alcohol is one of the few substances from which withdrawal can be fatal? I sure didn't know this until Sarah Rusbatch gave me the lowdown. Sarah is a Grey Area Drinking Coach (yep, it's a thing) and she's helping thousands of high functioning, seemingly 'got-it-together' women cut their destructive ties with the demon drink. Sarah shares her own experience with booze and the slippery slope she found herself on before swapping out the spirits for soda and pulling her sh*t together to tap into the potential that alcohol was drowning out. Drinking increased by almost 20% for women and 10% for men during lockdowns last year, according to The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Grey Area Drinking Coach, Sarah Rusbatch, says many women in lockdown miss being able to ‘download' with girlfriends in person and drinking is a quick-fix comfort at the end of a stressful day.
