This week, Tennessee based old-time string quartet The Stones River Reelers recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park's annual Stringband Music & Arts Festival. Every October, the Ozark Folk Center State Park holds its annual Stringband Music & Arts Festival. It's two days of lively stringband music & dance, handcrafted art, fine Southern cuisine, and old-fashioned fun. The festival includes live shows on Friday and Saturday featuring acclaimed bands from the Ozarks and beyond. The Stones River Reelers are a Tennessee based traditional oldtime quartet. Self described as “Hardcore traditional music from the heart of the Volunteer State,” they are Andrew Larson on guitar, Michal Klug on fiddle, Seth Shumate playing harmonica, and Aaron Stephens on banjo. The Reelers recreate not only the sound but also the feel and flair of early American “hillbilly” dance music of the 78 speed records era. Why do they do it? According to their website: “Like all the great old-timers, we play this venerated music to avoid hard labor.” - https://stonesriverreelers.com/about In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1974 archival recording of original OHR host and clawhammer banjo Jedi Mark Jones along with Lynn Young, performing the traditional song “John Henry,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins discusses the exact location of the Ozark region. Where the Ozarks are and where they're not.

Show notes?! In this economy?! Yeah, I'm doing em. Griff is back from the technology conference and the people there are freakin HORNY. Also, we gotta be having some of those Sweet Tomatoes / Potatoes (Tuna Tarragon, yum) and arguing over the virtues of Hell's Kitchen on the internet. We also congratulate the nation of Scotland for proving to Boston that they aren't even good at the thing they brag about (getting drunk and fighting), and there's some more World Cup bracket before we take a nice one week break while Griff goes to “drain the swamp.” Alright, have fun out there! ★ Support this podcast ★

The more hardcore and devoted you get to fitness, the more risk you bring that you might actually be doing things the wrong way and getting counterproductive results. In this episode, I break down 5 ways you may be screwing up your fitness goals—even if you’re consistent, disciplined, and training hard. We talk about why sleep, rest, recovery, and downtime are the foundation for everything else, why the body is a dynamic organism and not a machine you can program, and why you have to be careful about outsourcing your intuition to technology. I also dive into why VO2 max is overhyped, why zone 1 deserves more attention, how chronic cardio and narrow fitness goals can compromise longevity, and why so many people are missing the most important pieces of lifelong fitness: strength, power, and sprinting. In this episode, I reveal that the solution is simple: move frequently at a slow pace, lift regularly, and sprint occasionally. Whether you’re an athlete or someone focused on staying fit, strong, and capable throughout life, this episode will challenge how you think about training for true full-body functional fitness and longevity.
