Like other sea turtles, hawksbill turtles are critically endangered due to the loss of nesting and feeding habitats, excessive egg collection, fishery-related mortality, pollution and coastal development. Currently, hawksbill turtles are protected by international agreements like the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Convention on Migratory Species. This level of international cooperation is essential to the conservation of hawksbills given their wide geographic range. In Singapore, a small few hawksbill turtles return to the shores during the nesting season between May and October every year. After hatching, these turtles essentially run as quickly as they can to the ocean before a predator can eat them, and then, they are “lost”. Lost, that is, as most would not see them again until they return as juveniles and subadults to their birth shores several years later. That gap of time is called the lost years and has proven to be a challenging life stage to study. On this episode of Climate Connections, hawksbill turtles researchers Assistant Professor Kim Hie Lim from NTU's Asian School of the Environment and Regine Tiong, PhD student at NTU share more about their DNA study that's set to uncover some of the secrets behind lineages of hawksbill turtles that visit Singapore's shores and where they go to nest and forage after hatching. En Malaisie, comment protéger les tortues marines?

Reportage International

It is a holistic approach that uses all the tools in the toolbox to reduce emissions. The CCE introduces a fourth "R" in the reduce, reuse, recycle framework --- and that is to "remove." This includes removal of carbon from the air - carbon capture, as well as other methods. The G20 endorsed the CCE in 2020.One of KAPSARC's many ongoing research projects is the Circular Carbon Economy (CCE) Index project, which is a tool for governments and other climate change policy stakeholders to evaluate progress in support of domestic planning and decision making in the nexus of energy, emissions, and the economy.Saudi Arabia and Aramco have now adopted the circular carbon economy framework as a way to reduce their carbon footprints. The hosts ask guest Adam Sieminski what Saudi Arabia is doing now and is planning to do to in order to achieve a fully circular carbon economy nationally. 34:49 - Renewable energy in Saudi Arabia - getting to 50% renewable energy in Saudi Arabia by 2030 and a look at solar's role in achieving that milestone.Saudi Arabia plans to generate 50% of its electricity from clean sources by 2030.After COP 26, and the Kingdom's first utilities-scale solar plant launched in June, Sakaka, the Kingdom has some momentum in this critical space. The Kingdom has 7 independent power producer schemes in the pipeline for approximately 3 GW of PV projects coming online soon. But the Kingdom's total electrical capacity right now is 70 GW, so there's a long way to go to get to Saudi Arabia's stated goal. Is the 50% goal of renewables by 2030 realistically achievable?1:01:44 - Yallah!

Happy Endangered Species Day!This Friday May 21, 2021 is Endangered Species Day. In honor of that we take at look at two endangered species that call the ocean home. Corals and Hawksbill Sea Turtles.YES! Corals are animals and they are FREAKING OUT!! Or more like bleaching out. Kind of like humans when our temperature goes up a few degrees and we nearly shut down, except corals are actually shutting down. Coral reefs around the world are having a hard time right now and need our help! Since coral help out literally thousands of species of sea life the least we can do is help them out. Did you know the hawksbill sea turtles helps them. So why not be like a turtle and save the coral. That's right; Hawksbill Sea turtles help to open up more space for more coral to grow! In the sea turtle segment we take a closer look at their shell and learn why they CAN'T remove their shell (Well they can, but only once as they will die... try not to cry too much this episode). On a bright note; there's a surprise sea turtle rap at the end of this episode (Its a song I made ten years ago for a college course and I got an A... so if the quality of the song is poor...that's why. Don't judge me too harshly). Here are the scientific names:CoralsStaghorn Coral: Acropora cervicornisGrooved Brain Coral: Diploria labyrinthiformisOrgan Pipe Coral: Tubipora musicaSea TurtlesHawksbill Turtle: Eretmochelys imbricataGreen Seat Turtle: Chelonia mydasLoggerhead Sea Turtle: Caretta carettaLeatherback Turtle: Dermochelys coriaceaIf you don't feel like donating money to the podcast then click on these link to help support conservation efforts that are working hard to save coral and sea turtles:https://www.reeflifefoundation.org/donate-for-oceanshttps://coral.org/donate/https://www.barrierreef.org/you-can-help/donatehttps://www.turtleconservancy.org/donateInstagram @wafpodcasttiktok @wafpodcastYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8X57p2y-c7S8evAriKTn0wEmail: wafpodcastexplicit@gmail.comTwitter @wafepodcastSupport the show (https://www.ko-fi.com/wafpodcast)

Dr. Larry Wood has been working with sea turtles in Florida for over 25 years.  His lifelong interest in reptiles brought him from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to Juno Beach Florida, where he undertook nesting beach surveys, helped develop a sea turtle rehabilitation facility, and created numerous public awareness and marine education programs.   In 2004, he established the Comprehensive Florida Hawksbill Research and Conservation Program, which is the first and only long-term study of hawksbill turtles in Florida.  Dr. Wood has contributed to sea turtle conservation in many ways in Florida and elsewhere through publications, contributions to symposia, and student/volunteer mentorship.  He is currently pursuing his research and public education interests with the National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation and the Audubon Society of America.  Visit ConservationCelebrations.com to learn more.

Today’s World Footprints radio show is all about the beautiful island of Bequia (pro-nounced Beck-Way), the northern-most island in the Grenadines.  We will traverse as much of the seven square miles as we can during this broadcast. First, we’ll start under the pristine coastal waters of Bequia as we explore some of the best diving spots in the world.  We start our underwater adventure with Cathy Sachs from Dive Bequia who takes us to a colorful spot called Devils Table. From there we’ll travel on land to Bequia’s Park Bay, home to the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary, where we’ll meet up with a retired, skin-diving fisherman known affectionately as “Brother” King.  Brother King has devoted much of his adult life to helping preserve the Hawksbill turtle and protect them from poachers.  The story of this “accidental conservationist” is inspiring and educational. Finally, we’ll retire to one of the most scenic and romantic resorts we’ve experienced on any of our travels-the Bequia Beach Hotel.  You’ll meet owner Bengt Mortstetd and hear his inspiring story on how he came to establish this unique property on Bequia’s most beautiful beach.
