Exquisite odds and ends from the Oz Waves master. Interview with @steelebonus: melbournedeepcast.net/portfolio/steele-bonus "I recorded the mix at the Red Light Radio studio on a Sunday when they are closed. I just went in there with a tote bag filled with some of the stuff I've been listening to and playing out plus a few new records I'd picked up that particular weekend. 90s techno, electro, emotional synth pop, records played on the wrong speed, Italian house, new-beat and various other odds and ends. The opening track is by an old New Zealand band Headless Chickens, thanks Michael K for showing me that one."
Russell Brown shares stories about the life and funeral of Headless Chickens bass player Grant Fell.
It’s the new year so that means we’re starting from the beginning: before Radiohead was Radiohead...or rather, when they were a band of misfits in an elite boys boarding school and called themselves On A Friday. We delve into the history of the Abingdon school, how they all found each other, plus some EXCLUSIVE recordings of a show from 1989 with Thom’s college band Headless Chickens! We also speculate what the members of Radiohead would be doing now if Radiohead never happened and we discuss their upcoming jaunt across South America, Jonny’s first award for his work on Phantom Thread and the tragic and infuriating updates about the fatal stage collapse five years ago in Toronto.
Love Of Diagrams: Forming in 2001, Love Of Diagrams started out as an instrumental band, releasing their debut album ‘The Target Is You’ in 2003 and then slowly bringing vocals into the fold with their follow up EP ‘We Got Communication’. 2007 saw them sign with massive independent label Matador Records and the worldwide release of ‘Mosaic’ their 2nd album to very kind critical reviews. There was a 6 year gap between their 3rd album ‘Nowhere Forever’ and their brand new album ‘Blast’, which came out last month on Bedroom Suck Records. Recorded & mixed by Paul Maybury & Joe Fairburn. Recorded at PBS FM Studios, Melbourne on the 3rd of February, 2015. God Bows To Math: Taking their name from a song on The Minutemen’s ‘Double Nickels On The Dime’, Auckland’s God Bows To Math are fairly regular visitors to Australian shores. Proudly DIY, the New Zealand trio have performed their unique noise adventures at over 200 performances during their six year career. Their self-titled debut hit the shelves in 2011 and they’ve just released their brand new record ‘Brighter Futures’ which they recorded with Nick Roughan, who’s name you’ll find on records by classic New Zealand artists such as Bailterspace, The Clean, Headless Chickens & Die! Die! Die!. This performance from The Waiting Room in Brisbane back in April 2013 shows every angle of this exciting – and noisy – rock band. Recorded & mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Waiting Room on the 27th of April, 2013. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 3 April 2015. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
