This rock-bottom moment served as a catalyst for change, triggering a profound awakening within him.Driven by an inner need to turn his hardship into a beacon of hope for others, Patrick has committed himself to share his journey since 2018 with the world. Fiona explores how gambling became a drug for Patrick. How the biggest thing for him was learning how to show his emotion, the importance of self-awareness. Patrick now works for Epic Risk Management which was formed in 2014, when the CEO of the company had ended up in prison, having attempted suicide, and stolen £434,000 from his employers, which was one of the world's biggest banks to fund his gambling addiction. Whilst he was in prison, he recognised that actually, he wasn't the only person who had suffered from an addiction of this kind who must have done things like he had done and ended up in the situation that he was. Patrick says that he realised that there were a lot of organisations that dealt with people once they'd kind of fallen off the cliff but that there weren't enough trying to prevent it in the first place. Patrick explains how gambling carries such stigma that what they try at his company is to try and break down those barriers and ultimately allow people to make more informed decisions, to understand how to spot signs in themselves and probably most importantly what to do if they do need help.Patrick's book is called - Might Bite: The Secret Life of a Gambling Addict

Worried about the amount of time your teen is gaming? You're not alone! 9 out of 10 parents say teens spend too much gaming. But what is too much gaming? When does gaming become unhealthy or even addictive? And what can parents do to support teens who are problem gamers? We answer all these questions today in a brutally honest interview with Patrick Foster, a former professional cricketer and school teacher whose life was shattered by a pathological gambling addiction that brought him to the verge of taking his own life. After a long journey through recovery and rehab, Patrick now uses his lived experience of problem gambling to help young people and their parents who may be experiencing similar difficulties or who are unaware of the potential pitfalls and dangers of gaming and gambling. Former professional cricketer Patrick Foster has written a searingly honest memoir about how he became addicted to gambling while at university, developing a habit that cost him £4million and ruined his relationships and career. So this is an opportunity to discuss sport's commercial relationship with the betting industry, something that's often couched in abstract terms, of new deals being struck by rights holder, team shirt sponsorship and Ray Winstone at half time.We don't tend to hear from the people who are being targeted by all that marketing activity and how the sports business looks from the perspective of a gambling addict.Patrick Foster was a professional cricketer, who became a city trader. We talk about what it feels like to lose everything to addiction, and how he views the marketing strategies of the betting industry, its use of sport as a sponsorship and advertising medium, the psychological triggers within brand communications and the gateway drugs of gamification, fantasy football, the addictive nature of crypto currency trading and football's embrace of fan engagement tokens.Patrick's last bet was on King Crimson in the 2.10 at Wolverhampton on Thursday, March 22nd 2018.  Following rehab, he has a new career - educating young people about the perils of gambling. He can be contacted at Epic Risk Mangagement.Might Bite: The Secret Life of a Gambling Addict by Patrick Foster is published by Bloomsbury Sport.

On this week's episode of Life and Lessons, you're going to hear a conversation I had with Patrick Foster. For 12 years Patrick lived a secret second life.To his friends and family, he was a happy, successful teacher. But behind the scenes, Patrick was battling a gambling addiction. It's one that would eventually cost him over £4,000,000, cost him his job, and almost cost him his life.In the next hour, you're going to learn:1. How an innocent hobby can turn into an all-consuming addiction.2. The bet that changed Patrick's life forever, and why winning £35,000 was the worst thing that would have happened to him.3. How it feels to gamble more than £4 million, borrow money, and eventually be found out. 4. How Patrick managed to step away from his addiction, and enter into recovery. And so much more. This is an interesting and important conversation.Patrick's willingness to be so open, honest and raw about his story not only shines a light on just how serious problem gambling can be, but also that recovery is possible.Give this one a listen, and make sure you share it with anyone you think would benefit from hearing it. Alasdair Hooper and Will Moulton host the first episode of our Mental Health Awareness Week series on addiction with Russell Pearce and Patrick Foster. Addiction is a major problem in the UK and former Welsh boxer Russell, and former cricketer Patrick, know that better than most having suffered from alcohol and gambling addictions respectively. In Russell's case his addiction essentially cost him is gambling career while for Patrick, his gambling pushed him into almost doing the unthinkable. To sum up the state of the problem, in the first nine months of 2020 deaths from alcohol hit record levels in England and Wales - 5460.  That is a 16.4% increase on the same period in 2019. In July 2020, a House of Lords report titled 'Gambling Harm - Time for Action' found that half of adults in the UK gamble at least once a month. A third of a million UK citizens are 'problem' or 'disordered' gamblers and it is estimated that for every problem gambler, six other people are harmed by the breakup of families, crime, losing jobs, losing homes or a death. In this episode both Russell and Patrick will use their own experiences to help us understand some of the issues at play better.  They have incredibly powerful stories to tell but they both are also in a position where they can now help others - Russell currently helps recovering alcoholics with the charity Kaleidoscope while Patrick is the Director of Educational Programmes at EPIC Risk Management. Easy. Appreciated. Two words and a holiday gift issue solved. Buy automotive books for the enthusiasts on your holiday shopping list. Bruce Aldrich and I discuss a half-dozen automotive books on episode #160 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Automotive books make good holiday gifts for the car enthusiasts on your holiday shopping lists. We've had everal authors on the podcast in the past three years. All share a passion for the automotive industry — Chevrolet to Volkswagen, Jeep to the massive Takata airbag catastrophe. Here's a synopsis of three of the books we discuss: * Russell Hayes, like all automotive industry book authors, is passionate about his subject matter. Hayes' interests cover several iconic carmakers, including his latest effort celebrating the 75th and 70th anniversaries of the Volkswagen Beetle and Bus. Automotive Books: VW to Jeep to Chevrolet For enthusiasts as interested in vehicles as the author, Hayes' coffee-table sized volume is Volkswagen Beetles and Buses: Smaller and Smarter (Quarto Publishing Group, $40). Automotive books are a good choice for the car and truck enthusiasts on your holiday shopping list. As Hayes explains, no carmaker's history is as unique as Volkswagen — its association with the Nazi movement to the Hippie generation. * Patrick Foster knows as much as anyone about automaker Jeep. With more than 30 years in the automotive industry, Foster is a prolific journalist, particularly when writing about the long history of utilitarian, four-wheel-drive vehicles. Foster's latest book is Jeep: Eight Decades From Willys to Wrangler (Motorbooks $32.99.) Accompanied by more than 200 photographs, the 192-page paperback is described as “the definitive book on the greatest four-wheel-drive vehicle ever.” Foster details his vast knowledge of Jeep, and he gives an insightful account of the stories behind its design and production. The automaker's well-known World War II presence to current models are all covered. * Mick Mueller has written and another authoritative book on the history of the Corvette. The Complete Book of Corvette, a coffee table-sized volume detailing the first seven generations of “America's Sports Car” (Quarto Publishing Group, $55), continues Mike Mueller's prolific writing career. Showcasing more than 60 years of Corvette history, the book was published in cooperation with General Motors. It's illustrated with 500 color and black-and-white photos from GM's exclusive Design and Media Archives. Development, tech specs and visual prowess of the Corvette lineup are all covered in Mueller's second book on the iconic sports car. Bruce and I also discuss several other books, from a fascinating look at a junkyard of cars in Los Angeles to an expert who details the tragedy of the airbag crisis.
