In Edmonton, federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson announces that the Canada Infrastructure Bank will provide a $100 million loan to Cando Rail & Terminals to support the expansion of the rail capacity at Sturgeon Terminal, a multi-purpose rail hub just outside the city. He is joined by Brian Cornick, president and CEO of Cando Rail and Terminals, and John Casola, chief investment officer at the Canada Infrastructure Bank. Airports could save money and drive down airfares by bringing domestic and international terminals together. A study has found integrated airport terminals save on double-ups and encourage passengers to spend more money. It shows this extra revenue could help airports cut costs for airlines, which could mean cheaper fares for travellers. NZ Airports Association CEO Billie Moore told Mike Hosking integration is the dream for all airports. She says it helps them build better, save on spending over time, and makes the passenger experience better. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
- Erster Fokus-Use-Case: Hafenlogistik – horizontaler Containertransport in Terminals. - Investoren & Kommerzialisierung: Anspruch gestiegen – funktionierende, sichere Produkte statt Visionen. - Veränderungen seit 2022: Ukraine-Krieg, neue geopolitische Lage, gestiegene Bedeutung europäischer Souveränität. - Partnerschaft mit HALA (Hamburger Hafenlogistik AG): Langjährige Tests in Tallinn → Produkt unter realen Bedingungen erprobt und zertifiziert. - Vergleich alte/neue Technik: AGVs (eingezäunt, selten eingesetzt) vs. flexible Terminal-Traktoren mit Retrofit-Option. - Arbeitsplätze: Wandel vom Fahrer zum Büro-basierten Operator; höhere Attraktivität, neue Zielgruppen (inkl. Frauen, jüngere Generation). - Hardware & Technologie: Retrofit oder ab Werk; Drive-by-Wire, Sensorpakete, Compute. Profitieren von Fortschritten aus PKW-Autonomie (Waymo, Tesla). - Partnerschaften & Zulieferer: Zusammenarbeit mit OEMs und Zulieferern (z. B. KRONE). - Weitere Use-Cases: Werksgelände (VW), Distributionszentren (DB Schenker), später auch öffentliche Straßen (Short-Haul). - Regulatorik: Deutschland als Vorreiter (Level-4-Gesetz, Fernlog-Verordnung). Gute Rahmenbedingungen. - Wettbewerbsumfeld: Europa muss eigene Lösungen entwickeln → Ziel: globaler Champion „das nächste Siemens“. - Militärlogistik: Neue geopolitische Notwendigkeit (Ukraine, NATO). Use Cases: sichere Versorgung an Frontlinien. Dual-Use-Strategie. Boston's North and South stations serve as critical transit hubs but remain disconnected despite a century of failed attempts to link them.• North Station serves 40,000 daily commuters from northern suburbs and connects to Amtrak's Downeaster route• South Station handles 60,000 daily commuters and serves as terminus for multiple Amtrak routes including Acela• Transferring between stations requires a 16-25 minute journey using multiple subway lines• Five major attempts to connect the stations have failed since the 1930s due to funding issues and political obstacles• The Big Dig highway project complicated future connection possibilities by placing a tunnel between the stations• Current estimated costs for connecting the stations range from $12-21 billion• Engineering challenges include tunneling under existing infrastructure, electrifying commuter rail, and working in a dense urban environment• Advocates continue pushing for the connection citing climate goals and regional transit equityIf you want to support the show, the best ways to do so are via our Patreon, Buy Me a Coffee, or check out our merch store!Send us a textSupport the show

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome to the American Railroading Podcast! In this episode our host Don Walsh is joined by guest Denson White, Chief Commercial Officer of APM Terminals, Pier 400 in the Port of Los Angeles / Long Beach, CA. Together they discuss the current state of the U.S. supply chain, the effect that trade wars and tariffs can have on it, as well as how lessons learned during Covid will help those in supply chain today, and the surprising year-to-date stats of U.S. carload and intermodal traffic. Tune in to this episode to gain valuable insights and broaden your understanding of American Railroading! You can find this episode and more on the American Railroading Podcast's official website at www.AmericanRailroading.net , and watch our YouTube Channel at the link below. Welcome aboard!KEY POINTS: Don Walsh dedicates this episode to the loving memory of his niece, Dr. JaeLynn Bobbie Stewart. Love you J.B. This is Denson's 2nd appearance on the podcast. The first being Season 1, Episode 5 titled “Supply Chain – The Relationship Between Ports & Rail”. Be sure to go back and give it a listen. In 2024, APM Terminals completed a $73M rail expansion project at Pier 400 in the Port of Los Angeles, CA., which is projected to eliminate 1,200 truck trips per day by 2040.While intermodal railcars make up only 4% of the U.S. national fleet, 48% of all U.S. rail traffic is generally intermodal rail shipments.Intermodal freight transport is defined as involving the transportation of freight in an intermodal container, using multiple modes of transportation (i.e. ship, rail, truck and aircraft) , without any physical handling of the freight inside the container when changing modes. As discussed in Episode 3 of Season 3, the Government is the 800lb gorilla in the room, as they are always tinkering with things like regulations, taxes, interest rates and tariffs.Denson provides an insider's viewpoint on how the current tariffs and pending trade war with China are already effecting U.S. ports and the overall supply chain.Don gives an update on PHMSA's pending rulings HM264b and HM265 at the end of the episode after “”My 2 Cents”, so please stay tuned until the very end.The American Railroading Podcast remains in the Top 10% of all podcasts worldwide! A look at the world's most desolate airports. We start with Mid America St. Louis Airport, a facility originally conceived as a burgeoning hub to augment the operations of Lambert St. Louis International Airport. Despite its grand architectural design and potential to accommodate both domestic and international travelers, the airport has struggled to attract consistent airline operations, largely due to its proximity to a more established airport and insufficient passenger demand. Then we visit the new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport in Cambodia, a project launched in response to the burgeoning tourism in 2025, surrounding the iconic Angkor Wat. With state-of-the-art infrastructure designed to handle millions of passengers, the airport's reality starkly contrasts its ambitions; it grapples with underutilization and fierce competition from other regional airports. The Cambodian government remains hopeful about its potential role in bolstering the nation's tourism and economic landscape, yet the challenges it faces underscore the complexities inherent in fostering growth in less accessible regions. Then we tell story of Ciudad Real Central Airport in Spain. Once envisioned as a pivotal European transit hub, it too met an untimely demise due to operational failures and financial miscalculations, culminating in its bankruptcy within just three years of operation. This trajectory of decline across various global airports serves as a sobering testament to the volatility of the aviation sector, and how sometimes airports can come back from nearly dead, as in Worcester Mass Airport.

Brian #1: Terminals & Shells Ghostty is out Started by Mitchel Hashimoto, one of the co-founders of Hashicorp “Ghostty is a terminal emulator that differentiates itself by being fast, feature-rich, and native. While there are many excellent terminal emulators available, they all force you to choose between speed, features, or native UIs. Ghostty provides all three.” Currently for macOS & Linux (Windows planned) Version 1.0.1 released Dec 31, announced in Oct Features: cross-platform, windows, tabs, and splits, Themes, Ligatures, … Shell Integration: Some Ghostty features require integrating with your shell. Ghostty can automatically inject shell integration for bash, zsh, fish, and elvish. Fish is moving to Rust “fish is a smart and user-friendly command line shell with clever features that just work, without needing an advanced degree in bash scriptology.” “fish 4.0 is a big upgrade. It's got lots of new features to make using the command line easier and more enjoyable, such as more natural key binding and expanded history search. And under the hood, we've rebuilt the foundation in Rust.” Michael #2: Winloop: An Alternative library for uvloop compatibility with windows via Owen Lamont An alternative library for uvloop compatibility with windows . Python 3.14.0a3 is out, and available with uv uv python install 3.14 --preview Michael #4: uv-secure by Owen Lamont (yes again :) ) This tool will scan PyPi dependencies listed in your uv.lock files (or uv generated requirements.txt files) and check for known vulnerabilities listed against those packages and versions in the PyPi json API. I don't intend uv-secure to ever create virtual environments or do dependency resolution - the plan is to leave that all to uv since it does that so well and just target lock files and fully pinned and dependency resolved requirements.txt files). Works “out of the box” with a requirements.txt from uv pip compile. Container terminal operations are complex and often fast paced. Each container movement is unique in many ways; the characteristics of the cargo, the condition of the chassis and the condition of the container, for example, will all influence outcomes.
With over 80% of international trade transported by sea, ports and terminals are essential components of the global supply chain. However, they face a range of risks — including natural disasters, operational challenges, cyberattacks, and workforce disruptions — that can lead to significant disruptions with far-reaching effects on the global economy. In this episode of Risk in Context, Marsh's Randal Waters, Janelle Griffith, and Randall Holloman discuss the multiple risks that ports and terminals tend to face and how these could impact already vulnerable supply chains. They also share actions that organizations should consider to be better positioned to identify vulnerabilities within their operations and develop a comprehensive risk management and insurance strategy that allows them to build more resilient port operations. Constellations, a New Space and Satellite Innovation Podcast
In this episode, SES Space and Defense Vice President of Product Management Michael Geist discusses the evolving landscape of multi-orbit satellite capabilities. The integration of LEO, MEO and GEO orbits is poised to enhance connectivity and operational resilience. As governments and commercial entities increasingly embrace multi-orbit strategies, the industry builds a stronger foundation for a more adaptable and resilient future in satcom. An increase in demand for MEO and LEO services has not resulted in a drop in demand for GEO. CASR, or the Commercial Augmented Space Reserve, is a new way for commercial companies to support military satellites in orbit. Geist predicts that the largest disruptor in MILSATCOM will be digitization, which will act as a gateway technology to automating many satellite networking functions. Chapters: 0:26 – Introducing Michael Geist, SES Space and Defense 0:58 – the unique abilities of LEO, MEO and GEO 3:44 – multi-orbit capabilities and resilience through diversity 5:49 – shifts in popularity between orbits 7:07 – military satellites in orbit via CASR (Commercial Augmented Space Reserve) 8:57 – hybrid SATCOM architecture 11:05 – challenges in making CASR successful 13:33 – space data relay services 15:03 – Prediction: what will be the biggest technology disruptors in MILSATCOM?
