In this episode of The Next Gospel, Rev Karen, Odd Rev, and guest Ryan Glenn delve into the themes of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode 'The Big Goodbye.' They explore the immersive experience of the holodeck, the pressures of work and the need for escapism, the nature of reality and AI, and the complexities of humanity in relation to non-playing characters. The conversation highlights the intersection of faith and science fiction, raising profound questions about existence, reality, and the human experience. In this conversation, the speakers explore the concept of recognizing the often-overlooked individuals in our lives, referred to as NPCs (non-playing characters). They discuss the importance of connection, community, and gratitude, particularly in the context of faith and cultural understanding. The dialogue emphasizes the need to challenge our assumptions and biases about others, highlighting how our perceptions can shape our interactions. The conversation wraps up with reflections on the journey of connection and the significance of acknowledging the intricate lives of those around us.

The plan was for the Fantastic Four to go on a short little trip. That was all. Just a short trip and then boom....back to the old nine to five grind. But we ran into a little problem, didn't we. Let us tell you a little story. Once upon a time, a princess woke up and wanted someone to answer her ringing bell and make her breakfast. She rang and rang and rang, but no one showed up. It made her sad, and a little bit angry. And where were those people who should have shown up and serve her breakfast? They were goofing around and climbing on each other because they thought it was cute. Now, is that a good reason to ignore a princess? No, no it is not. What about the dragon? There is always a dragon in fairy stories. What was that dragon doing instead of helping are annoying the princess? He was just witting around playing with a big mechanical machine. That seems like a totally pointless waste of time. And then, just when the ringing of the bell began to annoy the women ringing the bell, something happened. A big old monster showed up to have a conversation about something or another. It really did not matter, because nobody could speak monster. Being bored and feeling ignored, the princess decided to jump out of a window to deal with the monster. She forgot to put pants on. which most people would find to be a problem, but the princess just thought it was a Wednesday. Now that she has landed on the ground, she decided to deal with the monster. This was easy too easy. It was like the monster slipped on a banana peel. It was like no effort, or less than sub effort. And the poor monster, he was not even supposed to be there that day. The end! This Journey's End tried to be an emotional Crusher, but it just ended up being a Disaster. They really needed to Troi (Pic)harder. The Emergence of this episode, devoid of Inner Light, will get no Redemption. A very Dark Page in Enterprise history. There will be no Justice for this Too Short a Season, though it should be A Matter of Honor. This is The Price we pay when Yesterday's Enterprise isn't given its Devil's Due. This Final Mission is corrupted by a Future Imperfect, leaving an Identity Crisis and a tarnished Legacy, from which Terry Matalas will learn all the wrong Lessons. The crew of the NX-01, at least The Survivors, In Theory, should be the subject of Hero Worship, not just Relics, A Matter of Time until they become The Outcast. Time for The Big Goodbye. Also The Outrageous Okona, I guess. Oh, this is supposed to be an Enterprise Podcast. What a Conundrum. Oops. Here's episode 100. ICT PHYGITAL: A 2024-25 SEASON PREVIEW The league season we feared ICT might never see is nearly upon us, we still have a club, and things are still… interesting. Moff, Stevie, Sandy, AY, Lee and the P&J's Paul ‘Chalky' Chalk convene to discuss what the season might hold for the club on and off the pitch, and whether the future really is phygital. Let's shuffle! 00:00:59 – Welcome. Moff introduces the panellists, hears about their incredibly boring lives, then gives a brief summary of the incredibly bizarre life of Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC since May, which leads neatly into a discussion of… 00:05:14 – New Investment. The panellists go over what we know so far (not much!) about the club's potential new owner, Ketan Makwana of Seventy7 Ventures, and consider some of the many, many questions his proposed investment raises. 00:31:24 – League Cup Group Games / Current Squad. After a brief overview of the recent games against Annan, Bonnyrigg Rose, Arbroath and Dundee, we discuss the players who look like being key to our season, with particular focus on some of the academy players who have graduated to the first team.  00:43:48 – Talk to Me: Ryan Esson. In an extract from a longer interview, the recently-departed under-18 coach and Scottish Cup-winning goalkeeper talks to Stevie about the club's crop of young players. 00:52:54 – Areas for improvement. Concluding the discussion of the current squad, the panellists identify the areas in most need of strengthening. 00:55:28 – The Big Goodbye. We remember those players we have lost. And there's a lot of them. 01:03:31 – Talk to Me: Aaron Doran. Stevie's lengthy interview with Aaron will be released as a stand-alone podcast some time in the future, but in this extract he describes his final days at the club, his disappointment at the shoddy way he was treated by those in charge, and his debt of gratitude to the fans and his ex-colleagues. 01:18:20 – The Manager. A very brief discussion of Duncan Ferguson and whether there have been any signs of improvement in his tactics and his management in the first weeks of this season.  01:23:17 – The Opposition: Who's Who in League One. We run the rule over Alloa, Annan, Arbroath, Cove Rangers, Dumbarton, Kelty, Montrose, Queen of the South and Stenhousemuir, then give some predictions for final placings. This segues into… 01:43:51 – Opening Fixtures. A quick chat about our first four league games, against Dumbarton at home, Annan away, Montrose at home and Kelty away. 01:45:47 – The Immortal Howden Ender: Johndo Mackenzie. We remember one of the most devoted, most recognisable and most beloved characters in the ICT support. RIP, Johndo.

Check out the announcement below…Featured Book: The Path to Paradise: A Francis Ford Coppola StoryThe New York Times bestselling author of Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M. and The Big Goodbye returns with the definitive account of Academy Award–winning director Francis Ford Coppola's decades-long dream to reinvent American filmmaking, if not the entire world, through his production company, American Zoetrope.Francis Ford Coppola is one of the great American dreamers, and his most magnificent dream is American Zoetrope, the production company he founded in San Francisco years before his gargantuan success, when he was only thirty. Through Zoetrope's experimental, communal utopia, Coppola attempted to reimagine the entire pursuit of moviemaking. Now, more than fifty years later, despite myriad setbacks, the visionary filmmaker's dream persists, most notably in the production of his decades-in-the-making film and the culmination of his utopian ideals, Megalopolis. As Wasson makes clear, the story of Zoetrope is also the story of Coppola's wife, Eleanor Coppola, and their children, and of personal lives inseparable from artistic passion. It is a story that charts the divergent paths of Coppola and his cofounder and onetime apprentice, George Lucas, and of their very different visions of art and commerce. And it is a story inextricably bound up in the making of one of the greatest quixotic masterpieces ever attempted, Apocalypse Now, and in what Coppola found in the jungles of the Philippines when he walked the razor's edge. That story, already the stuff of legend, has never fully been told, until this extraordinary book.Available herePodcast Rewind:June 2024 - Ep. 34…The Making Of is published by Michael Valinsky. To promote your products or services to over 25,000 filmmakers, TV and video pros reading this newsletter, please email us at mvalinsky@me.com Get full access to The Making Of at themakingof.substack.com/subscribe

The New York Times bestselling author of Fifth Avenue, Five A.M. and The Big Goodbye returns with the definitive account of Academy Award-winning director Francis Ford Coppola's decades-long dream to reinvent American filmmaking, if not the entire world, through his production company American Zoetrope. Francis Ford Coppola is one of the great American dreamers, and his most magnificent dream is American Zoetrope, the production company he founded in San Francisco years before his gargantuan success, when he was only thirty. Through Zoetrope's experimental, communal utopia, Coppola attempted to reimagine the entire pursuit of moviemaking. Now, more than fifty years later, despite myriad setbacks, the visionary filmmaker's dream persists, most notably in the production of his decades in the making film and the culmination of his utopian ideals, Megalopolis.Granted total and unprecedented access to Coppola's archives, conducting hundreds of interviews with the artist and those who have worked closely with him, Sam Wasson weaves together an extraordinary portrait. Here is Coppola, charming, brilliant, given to seeing life and art in terms of family and community, but also plagued by restlessness, recklessness and a desire to operate perpetually at the extremes. As Wasson makes clear, the story of Zoetrope is also the story of Coppola's wife, Eleanor Coppola, and their children, and of personal lives inseparable from artistic passion. It is a story that charts the divergent paths of Coppola and his co-founder and onetime apprentice, George Lucas, and of their very different visions of art and commerce. And it is a story inextricably bound up in the making of one of the greatest, quixotic masterpieces ever attempted, Apocalypse Now, and of what Coppola found in the jungles of the Philippines when he walked the razor's edge. That story, already the stuff of legend, has never been fully told, until this extraordinary book.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film. Hosted on Acast. This week we were saddened to receive the news that long-time Pixar production designer Ralph Eggleston passed away after a long battle with cancer. I spoke with Ralph for one of our first episodes, so my instinct was to remember him by re-running that episode this week instead of what we had planned. I'm joined by long-time Pixar animator Shawn Krause, who has known Ralph, or Eggman as many knew him, since the early Pixar days.Ralph shared his journey and his wisdom generously in this interview, talking about his beginnings at Cal Arts, his big break animating on Family Dog with Brad Bird, Fern Gully with Bill and Sue Kroyer, and his time at Pixar. He gets in-depth about his process and adds tips and advice for young artists. This episode was our longest and one of our most popular, so I encourage you to listen and learn and appreciate this talent who is gone too soon. Toward the end of the episode, Ralph talks about a recommended reading list for filmmaking and production design. We've shared the list below. Star Trek: The Next Generation analysis of season 1 episode 11 (The Big Goodbye) Oh boy, it's a holodeck episode and we are NOT happy about it! We're stuck with a Dixon Hill theme and 1940s San Francisco, questions about how tf the holodeck works and whether or not the crew is creating and destroying sentient life every time they use it, and poor Bev thinking she's finally getting her some alone time with the Captain only to have their private party crashed by aloof others time and again. Though we do not like the setting, we begrudgingly admit that this episode was actually pretty damn good. The writing was tight, the dialogue was funny and snappy, the actors were all at their best and reacting off each other to perfection. We get some great character development as well, even in smaller roles like Deanna coaching Picard on how to properly deliver the Jaraden greeting. Fun was had by all, even by us!
