Pearl Jam goes back on the road this week, and for the first time in ten years, they are making stops in Australia and New Zealand! The run will begin in Auckland, which is where our episode this week took place in on the 2009 Backspacer tour. Thanks to our Kiwi friend, Chris Warne, for putting in this episode request through our Patreon. He'll have info on some fun stuff going down at the shows, including the post-game reaction spots. This show offers a very unique OTOTO performance that you'll only get when touring the country. With the help of Neil and Liam Finn, there's an excellent performance of a song called Not Given Lightly by local legend, Chris Knox. We'll spend good time on this rarity that you may not have heard before. Other big highlights include one of the best versions of Severed Hand you'll ever hear, an amazing version of Faithfull, the uber rare Hold On played for only the second time, a fired up main set closing with Better Man and Red Mosquito featuring Ben Harper on slide guitar. All that, and we prepare for the upcoming tour starting this weekend! The Herald has been running a 'Poll of Polls' to look at what all the polls coming out say about how Parliament will look come October. Thomas is joined this week by the man behind the data, the Herald's Chris Knox, to discuss how polling works, how that informs the Poll of Polls, and some of the fiddlier bits of polling such as margins of error, electorate polling, and if they can become self-fulfilling prophecies. Few issues have attracted as much media attention in the last year as crime. Ram raids, street violence and burglaries have grabbed headlines time again, creating a sense that New Zealand is no longer a safe place to live – and a narrative that crime has got worse under the Labour government. Now, new insights from the NZ Herald data team reveal whether this perception is actually reflected in the crime statistics. Head of newsroom data Chris Knox tells Damien what the numbers actually show, and political writer Michael Neilson shares what our politicians have said on the subject over the years. Follow The Front Page on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. You can read more about this and other stories in the New Zealand Herald, online at nzherald.co.nz, or tune in to news bulletins across the NZME network. Today is Census day - a nationwide headcount of everyone in New Zealand and where they are living or staying. It's an important five-yearly data collection event that provides a snapshot of our nation at a point in time, including providing detailed information about New Zealand's small communities. It helps the Government know who you are, where you are, and what resources your community needs. Census data is used to plan infrastructure like water and roads, and services like schools and hospitals. NZ Herald Head of Newsroom Data Chris Knox joins Nick Mills to explain its importance. Since then, Flying Nun has brought us artists like The Chills, Headless Chickens, The Verlaines, and Chris Knox. The early days of Roger Shepherd's iconic Kiwi label have now been compiled into a book, it's called Needles and Plastic: Flying Nun Records, 1981-1988. Author Matthew Goody, a Canadian editor, publisher and fanatical record collector talked us through the book and the history of the label itself. Today I want to share a conversation I had with Chris Knox, born and raised in northern California's Silicon Valley. He's worked there for many years in a market that's very sophisticated. He has a really great business and today we talked through a couple of big opportunities he has. Right now, 100% of his business comes from repeat and referral clients. We talked about the opportunities in his after-unit that could easily bump that up by 50% this year. I'm excited to see how that plays out for him. We then talked about Getting Listings, and how to go into an area that doesn't have much to define it. We compared the difference to areas where it's common to have named communities, and how easy it is to pick an area that's very specific. We walked through how he could do that in an area that really doesn't have such easily defined characteristics and I think we came up with a great solution. Two great things to focus on that will help many of you dial in your best opportunities. Links: Show Notes GoGoAgent.com Be a Guest Listing Agent Lifestyle Book Listing Agent Scorecard

Glasgow/Aberdeen lad Chris Curtis, a long-time DJ and aficionado of awesome music, a prominent figure in the real Scottish underground scene has stepped forth, breaking an Avenue Red silence of no less than 51 days. After a healthy hiatus while the world was otherwise distracted, it is finally time to bring those who "see red" a fresh mix from a truly passionate and knowledgable musical soul who is one of the founder members of the excellent Glasgow-based institution, Club Sounds Live. Also known as CSL, it is an underground music movement and a hive of music knowledge with a strong membership of proper Sub Club, Arches, Pressure etc. veterans. We are so happy to finally restart the engine and bring yet another special mix of underground gems. "I've been a listener of Avenue Red mixes for several years, so I'm delighted to now be a part of the quality electronic expedition that is - Avenue Red! I've been DJ'ing for 20 years now in bars and clubs, mostly in Aberdeen (Scotland). From around 2005 to 2010, I was a resident at a locally famed techno night called Metropolis at the Pelican Club. Over the years, I had the pleasure of warming up for some brilliant international guests, also playing resident nights alongside night curator Chris Knox. I love the warm up maybe even more than the headline slot. There's something special about seeing an empty dancefloor bubble into a coiled spring ready for the headline act to come on. I'm a fan of long transitions and unexpected drops and I think long a warm up set gives you the perfect opportunity to craft an atmosphere and experience what the crowd is feeling at a more intimate level. As far as influences and genre go, they are varied and I'm quite open minded. I'm a huge fan of zen like melancholic sounds, deep grooves and pounding hypnotic rhythms. Although I'm also a fan of downtempo, funk and disco, I've kept things mostly electronic for this mix. Currently, I present the monthly subSine | Sessions show on Groove City Radio (Glasgow) which aside from great guest mixes, promotes the music of up and coming talent from the subSine Academy of Electronic Music in Glasgow. This winter I'm planning to hibernate, and maybe even finish one of several tracks I have on the go at the moment. Greetings from Scotland - Hope you enjoy the mix." Flying Nun Records special with Roger Shepherd in conversation with David Eastaugh The label was formed in the wake of a flurry of new post-punk-inspired labels forming in New Zealand in the early 1980s, in particular Propeller Records in Auckland. The intention was to record the original local music of Christchurch, but soon the label rose to national prominence by championing the emerging music of Dunedin. The Pin Group's "Ambivalence" 7" (the first band of Roy Montgomery) was the first release from Flying Nun, although it is widely assumed that "Tally Ho" by The Clean was the first release, as it unexpectedly reached number nineteen in the New Zealand charts, bringing the label unanticipated profile and income. This was followed by the seminal Dunedin Double, a release which cemented the place of the southern city in the forefront of New Zealand independent music. Flying Nun moved into the full-length album market in 1982 with the Ego Gratification Album by Chris Knox and Beatin Hearts by Builders (recorded 1982, Auckland). Many of the most prominent kiwi rock and alternative bands have been signed to Flying Nun at some stage in their careers. In 2000, Australian youth radio network Triple J produced a list of the thirty "Greatest New Zealand acts of all time", twenty of which were Flying Nun artists. The label has been home to various styles of music, including the much-debated Dunedin sound, "high-end pop with a twist", lo-fi experimentation, strongly Velvet Underground-influenced pop, minimalism, industrial, and rock-electronic crossover.
From ages 5-27 Chris Knox was visited by many different entities. Knox takes us on a journey as he experiences ghosts (remnant energies) , aliens, dark shadowy figures and a final experience that left us all a little shook! Knox's philosophy is that “different things happen to us all throughout life. But, these things are not what defines us.”

I expect that by now you're all up with the news that Chris Knox has suffered from a stroke. Since forming The Enemy in Dunedin in 1977 Knox has earned a crust as a musician, cartoonist and critic. His stroke has meant he can't do any of those things at present so fans are being called on to support him by buying his music. Some of Knox's more talented fans are currently working on a fundraising album of Knox covers. The list of contributors to that tribute album are an indication of the high regard with which he is held by musicians around the world. So it's no suprise that his songs have already been covered by many kiwi and international artists. This episode of Counting The Beat gathers some of those covers.Download the Counting The Beat - Chris Knox covers podcast
