Jez Willis in conversation with David Eastaugh http://utahsaints.com/ Utah Saints were described as "the first true stadium house band" by the KLF's Bill Drummond, though their music is difficult to place into one genre. The dance group originally met as music promoters and DJs for the Mix Nightclub in Harrogate in the early 1990s. They began as MDMA, featuring two former The Cassandra Complex members Jez Willis and Keith Langley, along with Bobby Rae and guitarist Martin Scott. Willis started The Utah Saints with the addition of Tim Garbutt

Blur's Modern Life is Rubbish. A cracking album to celebrate episode 25 for us and the 30th anniversary of it's release on Food records in the UK on the 10th of May 1993. Unthinkable given what came afterwards that Blur were in a bit of a pickle ahead of the release of this record. We discover why they were in serious debt, in threat of being dropped by the record company, and what were the songs that made the difference allowing the album to survive and thrive. We talk about the influence of producer Stephen Street, Blur's evolving sound and image, chart performance, critial reception, and provide a track by track analysis. As ever, to set the scene, we cover the UK news, TV, movies, singles and album charts from the date of reslease with the usual eclectic mix of one hit wonders, established artists and breakthrough acts including the likes of Kingmaker, Snow, R.E.M, Whitney Houston, Utah Saints, Janet Jackson, New Order, Sting, World Party, Duran Duran, Clannad, Terrence Trent D'Arby, George Michael, and Cliff Richard. Our Top 3's this week are things that are rubbish about modern life. Please forgive Rick's football related rant - he was in a fragile state of mind following Sheffield Wednesday's capitulation in their recent play-off semi-final first leg at Peterborough. Singles of the week. Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Discord server, Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.Anthony (of Capes on the Couch) joined us to go a hilarious and irreverent deep dive into the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, discussing everything from its iconic soundtrack to its questionable casting choices. From Jean Claude Van Damme's missed opportunity to be part of the cast to the iconic soundtrack, the hosts offer witty observations and absurd suggestions that will have you laughing out loud. But it's their suggestions for new characters and fatalities in the Mortal Kombat franchise that really shine, including a shirtless sax man from Lost Boys and a 'bloodwind' instrument played through a victim's ribs. And did Kevin Nash give his quads that Raiden could look fabulous?psst. we've actually done a bunch of these "goes to the movies" episodes. Check this page to see all of the released specials. Here's a sample of the full show notes - make sure to click through and check them out.Content WarningAs this is an episode about a both PG13 rated movie and a fighting game which literally started the game rating systems, we'd advise a little caution for this episode. There's nothing explicitly terrible in this episode, but the subject matter can be pretty rough. There are a few swears toward the end of the episode, but they're all bleeped out. There's also a part at 42:44 (which lasts for 90 seconds) where we discuss possible titles for a porn parody for this movie. Please listen responsibly.Show NotesThe boys are back in town, and this time they're joined by Anthony of the Capes on the Couch podcast. Anthony joined us to talk about the 1995 movie Mortal Kombat. Anthony was actually on an earlier episode - here's a link to that episode. And he described Capes on the Couch as:So Capes on the Couch, we are a podcast. We just crossed the five year mark, which we're very proud of, and we cover the mental health issues of comic book characters. And my co host, my best friend, my brother, is a board certified psychiatrist, and so he breaks it down from the perspective of, "what are some of the issues that each character faces?" And then we dissect what treatment options would look like for the characters, both in universe and that can involve whatever the characters have available to them, if they're magical, if they are technologically savvy, whatever the case may be, if the have abilities. Whatever that world has to offer, Doc will utilize that in treatment. And then we discuss what treatment would look like for a real person with a lot of these issues. And then we role play what a therapy session with that character would sound like. And it gives us an opportunity to have a little bit of fun and to do some voice acting. Some of them are funny, some of them are deadly, some of them are really serious. So it all honestly depends on the character. And so we have a lot of fun with it.And we just recently announced, I don't know exactly when this episode is going to be coming out, but we just found out that we are going to be doing our first ever panel appearance at a convention. We will be at Puchi Con in Atlantic City, New Jersey, so not terribly far from where we are. On Sunday, May 14, we will be discussing Vash the Stampede from Trigun. If you are at all a manga or anime fan, the con is a little more anime and manga focused than your standard comic convention. So when we were putting the panel together, I said to Doc, we've never done a manga character. I want to make sure that we hit the audience kind of where they are.- AnthonyInterestingly, since they had recorded the Mortal Kombat Annihilation episode ahead of this one - though it wasn't out when this one was being recorded - Squidge and Anthony had some things to say about it before the record button was pressed. Jay brought this up.Well, I wouldn't say it was trash talk, but Squid seemed to indicate that he felt that Mortal Kombat Annihilation was the best Mortal Kombat movie of them all. And I personally disabused him of that notion. Now, mind you, I haven't seen the reboot, so I cannot compare that to the original two...So I did see Moral Kombat Annihilation in theaters, and I could say, Squidge, I don't know what you were on. I don't know what we're just talking about mental health. Maybe you need to see somebody. Maybe you need to get some treatment there, because I think you are operating under a delusion and under a separate reality than the rest of us. And that is okay. That is you're living your truth. But I'm going to speak my truth. I'm going to live my reality. And my reality is one in which the Mortal Kombat Annihilation falls well below the standard of the original. So that is what I will politely and tactfully say about that.- AnthonyAnd Squidge's rebuttal was plain for all to hear:The story is already established, and it's not meant to be taken as seriously as the first one. So in that regards, story is inconsequential, really. But it's a quote. Irish comedian Dylan Moran - Mortal Kombat Annihilation not that part. This part, "it's fabulously f*%king stupid." The movie is pure cheese, and I love it. Talk about 90s cheese films, and itt doesn't get better than Mortal Kombat. Annihilation, seriously- SquidgeBasic Info on the MovieThis movie was released in 1995, and Mortal Kombat Annihilation was a direct sequel to it - taking place seconds after the ending of this movie. It was directed by Paul W. S. "look at how hot my future wife is" Anderson, and after making this movie he stepped away from it because he "didn't want to get tied down to a series." But after seeing the failure that was the sequel, he wanted to keep hold of the reins for the next video game movie he made: Resident Evil. So if you want someone to blame for the live action Resident Evil movies, then Lawrence Kasinoff (the producer of both Mortal Kombat movies) is your man.But then, if we didn't have the first Mortal Kombat movie, we'd have never had the absolute banger that is Utah Saints Take On The Theme From Mortal Kombat. So swings and roundabouts, really.Thank you, Utah Saints, for that. If you don't get hyped after hearing that and want to run through a goddamn brick wall, like, check a pulse.- AnthonyInitial ThoughtsBefore they could discuss the movie proper, Anthony brought up a very valid point about the journalism in this movie:How bad is the press? Though, that they have nothing else to write about. That Johnny Cage's fighting skills make front page headlines on two separate continents in at least two different languages. How starved are they for content? Of all the things that the could write about, there's no political corruption, there's no diseases, there's no global disasters. No. Let's talk about whether or not this globally beloved action star is a fake.- AnthonyTo which Squidge responded by asking the most important question of all time:So does does that make Johnny Cage the Tommy Wiseau of the mortal Kombat universe? I think that's my mic drop moment. I'm done.- SquidgeGet in touch with us on Twitter or our Discord server if you think that this movie would have been better if Tommy Wiseau had been in it. Would it have been better if Tommy Wiseau played everyone? Is there anyone out there who could put that together?Full Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, some out-of-context screen grabs from the movie, and some links to related things.Have you seen the Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 recently? What did you think? Is the Utah Saint's track your jam? Did Kevin Nash really give his quads so that Christopher Lambert could look fabulous? Aquí podemos escucharlos con 2 temas: “Hey Boy Hey Girl” y “Dig Your Own Hole”. TRACKLIST: 01 - The Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea 02 - Fatboy Slim - Gangster Trippin' 03 - SL2 - On A Ragga Tip (Edit) 04 - Adamski - N-R-G 05 - Utah Saints - Something Good (12" Mix) 06 - Leftfield Lydo - Open Up 07 - The Prodigy - Firestarter (Edit) 08 - Underworld - Born Slippy Nuxx 09 - The Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy Hey Girl 10 - Daft Punk - Revolution 909 (Radio Edit) 11 - Faithless - Insomnia (Monster Mix Radio Edit) 12 - Groove Armada - Superstylin' 13 - Groove Armada feat. TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ DAVE BEER # 081 - PART 1 The man behind the iconic brand Back 2 Basics speaks about his life from quitting high school and becoming a roadie. Come listen to one of the greatest promoters from the 1990s golden era of house music lay it all out on his rise to fame and being part of the New York City Club scene. His vision was to take a part of the New York Club scene and import into the UK and he did it and very well at that. Beer's obsession with the punk-music scene saw him become a groupie, hitching up with punk band The Clash. As a keen Photographer, he captured many exclusive shots of the bands he followed incorporating them into art projects at college. His persistence on the tour circuit led to his first proper role as a roadie and later as tour manager for bands including That Petrol Emotion, The Ramones, Ghost Dance, The Utah Saints, and The Sisters of Mercy who he lived with at the time. During a spell with Stourbridge noisemeisters, Pop Will Eat Itself, Beer found himself working on the 1987 Def Jam Records tour that included Public Enemy, Ll Cool J and Run - D.M.C., but life as a tour manager would soon takes its toll.

Jack Savoretti joins Nikki Bedi and Richard Coles to talk about his heritage, how his mum inspired him to get into music, and why for his seventh studio album, Europiana, Jack has reached back into his memories of childhood holidays spent on the beaches of north west Italy. Listener and musician Elaine Bryant contacted us to tell us about a very lucky escape she had back in 1984.  She was 17, a harpist from Dublin, on a tour of North America and Canada, when they got caught in a snowstorm in the wilds of North Dakota. On active duty during the first Gulf War in 1991, John Nichol's Tornado bomber was shot down. He was held as a prisoner-of-war and under threat of execution appeared on TV around the world reciting Iraqi propaganda. John explains how a reunion 25 years after the conflict inspired him to tell the stories of the people involved. Journalist and author Caitlin Moran shares her Inheritance Tracks: Sister Suffragette from Mary Poppins and Something Good by Utah Saints. Fifth generation circus performer Emily England was a semi-finalist with her roller-skating brother on ‘Britain's Got Talent'. The duo became Las Vegas headliners but Emily suffered a terrible knee injury that threatened her career. Emily talks about her life as a performer and making her West End solo debut as a magician. Producer: Claire Bartleet Editor: Eleanor Garland Jack Savoretti's album Europiana is out now, he is performing over the summer and has a 12 date UK tour next spring. Tornado: In the Eye of the Storm by John Nichol is out now. More Than A Woman by Caitlin Moran is out now in paperback. Photo Credit: Alex Lake. Felix Leiter In The House

In this episode I talk to Olly James about his meteoric rise through the EDM ranks... But Olly is much more than just a talented DJ and Producer... His understanding of the business behind the game is what really sets him apart in my opinion. Olly is really honest about the anxiety he faced in his early gigs and the processes he followed to over come this... This is one of my favourite ever episodes, even if you haven't heard Olly's music before, this is unmissable for anyone interested in the life of a young DJ / Producer and the graft that goes behind the success. My first brand new podcast in nearly seven months. Where does the time go? They say patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait and I think this one was worth waiting for. A good blend of the familiar and the not-so-familiar; some things you may remember and some you've long since forgotten or maybe never heard in your entire life. Before I get to a few band notes, I want to mention that I have now upgraded my account back to a Pro account. I just couldn't bear the thought that people were actually making a point of coming to this site to listen to the music only to be told by a pre-recorded message that they could not because of bandwidth limitations. What does that mean for you all? It means no more running out of bandwidth two days after I post a new episode. With apologies to the Pet Shop Boys it means more "opportunities" to listen and to download when you have time. It means more storage, so I don't have to delete the audio from an older podcast just to post a new one. (You may have already noticed I've re-posted some of the more recent back-catalog episodes). Over time, I will add more of them. For long-time listeners, it's a chance to re-visit some of the older stuff from "back in the day". For newer listeners, it will be like a glut of new podcasts to check out. I also want to note that I've removed the audio for my previous episode (CRC #42) as the recording levels were all over the map and I didn't think the quality was up to snuff. Perhaps 5 or 6 years ago, it would have been okay, I suppose, but even in light of the cheap mixer and free recording software I use to assemble these 'casts, I think this podcast has come too far now and demands a higher level of quality. So, I may re-record that one at a future date. At that point, I'll re-post. Same for back-catalog items. The really good ones, I'll re-post. The ones that could use a little work will most likely be re-recorded and re-posted as a "reboot" episode. All in all, thank you all again for tuning in. Have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2017! Now on to the bands ... If you've been a follower of this podcast since the beginning and you've clung to the belief that, against all probability, the thrash metal band, Slayer, would somehow make its presence felt at some point then your patience has finally been rewarded. And you should book your ticket to Vegas immediately. Taking a riff from the group's tune, "War Ensemble", "I Want You" was one of four Top-25 hits for Jez Willis and Tim Garbutt on Utah Saints' self-titled debut. The duo were at the pioneering edge of sampling, also grabbing a snippet of Kate Bush from her track Cloudbusting for the song "Something Good" and a soundbite from the inimitable Annie Lennox from her song "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)" for the track "What Can You Do For Me". Called "the first true Stadium House band" by Bill Drummond of The KLF, Utah Saints were one of the first rave acts to play live and one I had the good fortune to see on the same bill with The Shamen in the early 90s during the rave culture explosion. And let me tell you: it was quite a show ... probably. I first heard "Salvation" by The Hood sometime in 1989 while in college. A guy who lived down the hall from me had a version of it on an old mix tape. I really liked the track and was pleased as punch when the first of many Razormaid! discs from my nascent subscription showed up in the mail containing a mix of that song. It is a portion of that 10+ minute version that appears here. I would soon come across a movie soundtrack of the same name while sifting through record bins at a local indie shop. New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, The Hood, hip-hop producer extraordinaire Arthur Baker and others appeared on the album, so I purchased it. While I've listened to the song "Salvation" umpteen times over the years, I did not know much about the band or its members. To this day, I still don't. I spent the better part of an hour trying to find information on the group, but mostly found song credits and track listings. Eventually, I did find a tiny bit of info on a website called The Lost Turntable. The info was posted by an Arthur Baker and a John Hood respectively, both of whom I can only assume to be the real article. "the hood- is john hood, a legendary nyc party promoter-doorman,who is also quite a good writer. he was signed for a short time on the sire label and is active on the club scene in south beach, miami, florida" "Wow! Yeah, that The Hood track is indeed me: John Hood. (Thanks AB!) And I'm delighted to find it posted. In fact, till right now I never even had an MP3 of the song! So if no one minds, I'll post this, save this, and send this around. Nice to find Salvation!" If anyone knows anything more about The Hood, I would LOVE to get a one-sheet or press kit or bio on them. Speaking of bands I don't know much about, Gruesome Twosome would qualify as well. Sort of a one-off project for founders Samy Birnbach from Minimal Compact (aka Lord Solomon Pearbrook) and Norwegian producer Per Martinsen, who had been recording under the name Syamese, "Hallucination Generation" is the only official single from the group and was released in 1989. A cult classic in its own right, the song sort of bridges the gap between traditional industrial dance music and the bourgeoning New Beat music scene that was starting to take hold at the time. Birnbach and Martinsen would later collaborate with the likes of Bertrand Burgalat, Thrash from The Orb, Paul Kendall and Fortran 5 to eventually release a full-length album called Candy From Strangers, which was released in 1993. Birnbach currently releases material under the DJ Morpheus moniker, having once worked with Colin Newman from Wire for a project called Oracle, while Martinsen performs as Mental Overdrive. While it's probably not the best analogy as they employed very different musical styles, Ultravox is much like the band Genesis in the sense that they have two distinct timelines, led by two distinctly different front men. And much like one could argue Peter Gabriel represented the true vision for Genesis, there is no denying that Phil Collins took the band to massive commercial heights and is probably remembered more readily as the face of the group. Similarly, one could argue that while John Foxx may have been the driving force behind Ultravox during their formative years, it was Midge Ure, who took over after Foxx left for a solo career, that kept the band from imploding and pushed them further into the mainstream and to massive success in the UK. With 7 Top-10 albums and 17 Top-10 singles, U-Vox, like many other bands of the day, took their cue from the glam rock outfits that came before such as Neu! In fact, early on Ultravox was known as Ultravox! (with an exclamation point) in deference to Neu! The first album with the classic line-up of Ure, Billy Currie, Warren Cann and Chris Cross would be the amazing Vienna, which marked a very different direction for the group. Produced by long-time Kraftwerk producer Conny Plank, the album included the title track, which would reach #2 in the UK and would be the highest charted song for the band. (John Lennon's "Woman" and "Shaddap You Face" by Joe Dolce would both keep the song from reaching #1). And while the 1982 album Quartet, produced by George Martin, would be the best-selling US album for U-Vox, the band would not again reach the level of critical success they found with Vienna. The song in this podcast is the 12" version of "We Came to Dance", the final single from Ultravox's sixth studio album, Quartet, released on April 18, 1983. The single reached #18 on the UK charts and was the last of seven consecutive top-20 singles for the band. This being the Christmas season, I would be derelict not to mention that Midge Ure also co-wrote (with Bob Geldof of Boomtown Rats fame) and produced the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid. Last but not least, I want to mention "State Of The Nation" by New Order. Though it reached #1 on the UK Indie Singles Chart and #30 on the UK Singles chart in 1986, the song is probably not a favorite of the majority of New Order fans. I would wager if every NO devotee were to compile a list of his or her Top 10 songs, it would probably appear in less than 5% of those lists. Still, the track is a great one even if only for the fact that it's one of the few NO songs whose title actually appears within the lyrics and/or chorus of the song. As most die-hard fans know, the titles of most NO tunes have little or no relevance to the subject matter being discussed. "Shellshock", "Regret", "Touched By The Hand Of God" and "Confusion" are a few songs I can think of off the top of my head that go against that grain. While the song did not appear on the album, Brotherhood, which was released around this time, both the remix version appearing here and the B-side called "Shame Of The Nation", which was produced by John Robie, appear on the Substance compilation, released in 1987. That will do it for this epidsode. I've got my next podcast ready to record. As soon as I find some time, I'll do just that. Happy Listening!

Definitely one of the most charismatic people, Tim Sheridan joins Parabox for the second hour to talk about his influences. The man behind VeryVeryWrongIndeed label and club nights. A multi-intstrumentalist with a very educated approach to production, possibly due to the amount of time he is involved in doing it. A very open and cool guy, even though he does not think so. Member of Utah Saints, writer for Mixmag, Dj Mag, and much much more. We hand over the second hour to Tim, to play tunes which have influenced him, something he does not get a chance to showcase in a full club of people during the night. Sentimental reminders for some, educational for others. First hour of course, new and weird selection and exclusive tracks.

Oliver Lieb (DE) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 66 Pt. 2 Bio: Frankfurt based DJ & producer Oliver Lieb is involved in the production of electronic music since 1988. With more than 300 singles and albums including remixes for Faithless, Moby, Snap, Yello, Human League, Mory Kante, Utah Saints to name a few, he made it in the premier leage of international producers and keeps surprising and amazing people with his extraordinary sounds and diversity. Frankfurt based DJ & producer Oliver Lieb is involved in the production of electronic music since 1988. With more than 300 singles and albums including remixes for Faithless, Moby, Snap, Yello, Human League, Mory Kante, Utah Saints to name a few, he made it in the premier leage of international producers and keeps surprising and amazing people with his extraordinary sounds and diversity. At the age of 14 he started playing bass in several Funk/Soul/Jazz bands. Oliver also got in touch with electronic music (Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk,Yello, Jean-Michel Jarre) and discovered a new and an endless horizon of expressing himself. In late 1989 Oliver’s first record FORCE LEGATO “System” got released by Dorian Gray resident DJ Torsten Fenslau on his Abfahrt label. The single gained great worldwide reactions and almost hit the official German charts. In the years to follow Oliver released everything in the electronic genres from downtempo and chill-out to hard experimental techno and trance. His project Spicelab on Sven Väth’s legendary Harthouse label established a platform for his highly appreciated sounds, which developed into one of the most important projects of the label including the release of three full length album releases. Oliver never wanted to focus on just one specific genre he simply created several pseudonyms for each of his different styles. His LSG and Paragliders releases on Superstition Rec. are still considered as one of the most influencing and timeless trance projects and were developed for more than 10 years and 5 Albums. His maxis and albums got licensed on Hooj Choons, Yoshitoshi, Platipus, Duty Free, Magic Muzic and many others. After leaving Superstition in 2004 it was time for doing something new especially since the whole music scene went through big changes and somehow redefined itself. After locking himself into his studio to create new sounds and going into all kind of different directions Oliver announced the start of his own label “Maschine” in summer 2005 which is distributed worldwide by “Neuton” and online exclusively through Beatport and released his first single “Solieb - Circus Maximus” in July. The reactions were great and two more maxis followed until the end of 2005. Maschine is about to turn into a main source for high quality forward electronic music and grabs more and more peoples attention. In 2007 Oliver started a new company doing mastering and cutting vinyl. After all this was a logic step since he is known for a very high sound standard on his own productions and so he added some high end analog mastering gear to his studio to guarantee sound quality enhancement also for his clients. After the endless process of planning, constructions and moving in to the new studio and finally focusing on the new company he took a bit of a break from producing and djing - also to focus on a new sound and directions. In 2010 Oliver started a new label Solieb Digital to re-release his old music after re-mastering and polishing the tracks. So far there are 15 releases including his ambient album on Recycle or Die as well as two albums from Spicelab, L.S.G. – The Black Album Remastered Compilation and the L.S.G. „Unreleased Album“ were released. Since late 2010/early 2011 Oliver has started working again on new productions. The first release Parallax was an exclusive track for John Digweeds Structures two CD followed in July by the Oliver Lieb - Epsilon Eridani EP - on Bedrock. After upgrading and changing his studio setup in Summer 2011 he also appeared as a remixer again starting with Ioan Gamboa, Davide Cali and Microtrauma´s "Aktin" on Microtonal. In February 2012 Oliver Lieb together with Jimmy van M. released a mix CD as „The Audible Suspects" on Bedrock that was highly appreciated both for the outstanding overall sound quality and the track selection. Late November the Oliver Lieb - „Collider EP“ was released on Diametral with remixes by Solee and Matthias Spriger. In December two more remixes came out - Rich Curtis Lower my voice on Release Rec. and Mauro Norti - Last Day that made it to the Beatport Techno sales charts on #6. 2013 was very busy – it started in January with „The Shortest Day / Yarra EP“ on Tulipa Rec. with original Oliver Lieb tracks plus remixes from Android Cartel, Dapayk Solo and Roland M. Dill and two releases on Blackhole´s sister label Fris! Oliver Lieb –„Altiplano“ in January and „Ear Candy“ in April. In March „Rack to the Boots EP“ was released on Solee´s label Parquet followed by remixes for Solee´s „Jonalu“ and Teho & Tran´s track „Almeria“ – both on Parquet. Two EPs on Natura Viva came out in July and November (Tarsius EP and Hold it Back EP) while a remix for Citizen Kain´s track King Size was released on Natura Viva in between. In September Oliver re-launched his label Maschine with the well received „In Transit EP“ and released an EP on Elektrax Recordings (The Prophet EP) in November – both on vinyl and digital. Further on there were remixes on Microcastle (Deepfunk & Kassey Voorn), System Recordings, Wide Angle Rec., Modu Rec. and a few more. In December there will be a remix on Flow Rec. for JML – Seek til you find. For 2014 there are already a lot of releases planned. Starting with „Dark Energy EP“ on Proton early January and remixes for Inlab Rec and Natura Viva. As well there will be an ambient album on Psychonavigation Rec around summer and a new L.S.G. album after Summer… Tracklist: 01. Willy Real & David Prap - Back To Planet E (Oliver Lieb Remix) 02.
