Russ (DJ Dribbler) lives in Ibiza, DJs at Pikes, Paradise Lost, Ibiza Sonica, OpenLab, WOM, Standard Hotel and Malanga Cafe. He has written two novels which have achieved cult status on the underground scene, "Harry's Kebabs" and its sequel, "The Take Away". He was a resident DJ at Pure in Edinburgh, Tour Dj for Orbital in the 90s, spent 10 years djing in NYC, was a resident on Amsterdam's Red Light Radio for 4 years and is now a resident at Pikes. "I met Ken (Slothboogie) recently, when he was over DJing at Pikes. We spoke about Edinburgh. He knew of Pure. We chatted about the influence and contribution from Edinburgh in the 90s to today's goings on. It is a vast diaspora of artists, producers, writers, record shops, distributors, DJs, promoters and punters worldwide. I live in Ibiza now, I've lived in many countries and cities, and I'm lucky enough to hear and play alongside some world-class DJs every week. You always keep learning. I spent years hounding black music from the USA, and then suddenly, the penny dropped with Americana. It was all down to JIM, aka Jim, aka Ron Basejam. The harmony and melody and pounding soulful drive to the music, it had it all. I play that in the first hour. In the second section of the mix, I play a lot of tracks sent to me by friends. Andy Kidd lands mixes every year and they go through DJs here like a dose of the measles. Random House Project is also worth a mention this year for the Slave edit on there and other remixes. It's great to be able to share them with you."
From deep pools of ambience to the brain-feeding mechanisms of electro and techno, Nadia Struiwigh's gift is in expressing herself with conviction through her machines. As an accomplished live artist and producer, her affinity for synthesis and sequencing results in a spellbinding strain of electronica drawn from a richly personal sonic space she has marked out for herself. Struiwigh's recorded output has appeared on labels like Central Processing Unit, Nous'klaer Audio and Dekmantel - albums and EPs which reach from crunchy sequenced beats to vast swathes of pure, melodic tones. Her roots in Rotterdam and current location in Berlin equally speak to her affinity for techno - propulsive, dynamic machinations which manifest in DJ sets as well as live hardware performances. As a teenager enthralled with the Warp school of electronica and leftfield downtempo, Struiwigh was set on a path of discovery where the intricacy of production met with her impassioned, intuitive approach to composition. Her exacting approach to the technical aspects of the craft has earned her the knowledge to extract her own voice from any medium, but more importantly her music emerges from a very human need to communicate and connect. That connection is best manifested outside the studio. Struiwigh's live sets range from patient, beatless immersions to kinetic peak-time rushes, sometimes straddling the divide in line with her omnivorous passion for ambient and techno alike. At times she'll present her released works in a more patient, listening setting, while for the sensory overload of the dancefloor she tends towards a more improvised, open-ended approach to techno and electro. The exact make up of her live rig changes from gig to gig, keeping her inspired and ensuring no two performances are the same. High-profile shows in concert halls sit alongside strobe lit club sessions - she's since become a resident DJ for Tresor to indulge her love of driving, psychedelically-charged techno, while warm-up sets give her the chance to indulge the deeper dimensions of the music she loves. The range of her tastes can be heard across leading platforms such as RA, Phantasy, Bleep and Red Light Radio, who have all invited her to their esteemed mix series'. Plugged into the moment and constantly exploring new dimensions of her sound, Struiwigh champions electronic music as a springboard for possibilities. With an exquisite clarity which comes from both technical skill and clear-eyed intention, her music thrives on heart and experimentation, powered by machines with as much character as the human at the controls. Bside Incoming: Afrobot We can't wait to share this episode with you, over an hour of hidden Bside gems from Afrobot's incredible vinyl collection. He's a crate digger in the truest sense of the term, a record collector with an insatiable taste for the unknown exotic, a purveyor of rare treasures from across the globe. His selections always strive to push musical boundaries while maintaining a warm feeling of the familiar, a hair raising hybrid of styles: “The more confusing the better: a krautrock song with traditional ethnic instruments that sounds like an African record; that Nigerian boogie or Turkish disco track that are comparable to an American production and that Bollywood break that is a Kraftwerk copy. In music people have always liked to travel…” As a DJ for the last 25 years, Afrobot has been sharing his discoveries with the lucky listeners on Rotterdam's dance floors and Red Light Radio air waves. But in the last 5 years his musical journey has taken him further afield; from Dusseldorf's Salon Des Amateurs to Budapest, from Marakech's Atlas Electronic to Minimuzikhol in Istanbul, Belgrade's Klub 20/44 and the Croatian festivals of Dekmantel Selectors and Goulash Disko. Here's an episode of purist Bside philosophy: mostly from the ‘other side' of 7” singles, and tracks that are “different or confronting”; alternative, moody, and ever-engaging. Not only is Afrobot an excellent DJ and collector, he runs the ever growing label Afrobotic Musicology, with 17 releases each delving into different corners of the globe with different moods. - https://afrobotic.bandcamp.com/ He is also a very talented producer, and is known for turning strange undiscovered tracks into club ready bangers. A personal favourite is his edit titled 'Indian Acid' on his '5am' EP - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPNiBA6-LVU Check his soundcloud here - https://soundcloud.com/afrobot "I think in the A-sides they are often more about celebrating the good things of life, love songs, and B-sides could be more about heart breaks, complaints, sadness, the real life stuff, the B side of life.” - Afrobot Enjoy! Buon ascolto, buon weekend. Read more: https://www.ptwschool.com/blog/weekend-mixtape-89-yas-reven.html
Mark Knekelhuis is a world explorer who brings a love of live instrumentation to his dance music. The Knekelhuis label boss is a staunchly DIY operator who is also the voice of Volition Immanent, a live act along side Dekmantel regular Parrish Smith. He makes music that manages to be deeply personal but also immediate and arresting and that same style defines his radio shows on Red Light Radio. His mix for us is an exploration of deeply hypnotic sounds and dreamy breakbeats to slowly but surely wake you up right at the start of the week. Once you’re in the groove, there is space travelling electro and beautifully delicate melodic techno that continues to sooth your soul as you journey through the cosmos and off to a better place.

Poly-Rythmo Club starts the year 2020 with the finest grooves coming from the South of South America. The city of Buenos Aires is known for being one of the most musical places in the world and this is where we interviewed two key players of the underground Afro-Disco scene: Harari and Pabels. Harari is a record collector, Dj and Founder of Highlife, a multi cultural platform based in Buenos Aires. Highlife has a focus in music, visual arts and performances. During the last 3 years they have shaken the city night life by bringing artists such as Bosq, Selvagem, Rahaan, Mr Mendel, Ray Mang, and Carrot Green amongst others. They have also done collaborations with Dekmantel, Red Light Radio and are starting their own series of events in Melbourne. Pabels is one of the young promises of the groove scene in the city. He's the creator of the delicious "Day mixes" for La Tropical, Soundcloud's biggest and most select tropical mixtapes with more than 150.000 plays each. Pabels spreads the love for the summer lifestyle blending the best of funk, hip hop, house, soul, disco and balearic music into an unpaired identity. Tutu is someone who people speak about with a real sense of reverence despite the fact she very much remains in the shadows of the scene. The reason? Her electrifying DJ sets, which are brilliantly experimental, brave and adventurous in the way they pay no attention to rules or traditions. The Spaniard born Gemma Planell plays anything from IDM to ambient, to grime, bass and plenty of hard to define sounds in between, all with a sense of precision and dexterity that few could match. After impressing at our festival as well as on Boiler Room, Red Light Radio and at Sonar, she now makes a much anticipated entry into our mix series. It starts in typically brazen fashion with a monologue about the power of silence and then, a passage of silence. A giant fog horn then gets things underway again and you're carried through ambient and neo-classical, experimental minimalism and hellish techno. Weird rhythms and odd sonic textures are constantly being served up into a brilliantly mind-bending whole.

French born but Amsterdam based for almost 20 years, Kléo draws on her work as a visual artist when she's painting colourful musical landscapes in the DJ booth. She also takes the same approach when programming soul, jazz and boogie at Café Belgique. It is a homely space that suits her heartfelt sounds, while her Red Light Radio show has become synonymous with music that is just as sensitive. After appearances at both Lentekabinet and Dekmantel Festival before now, she finally brings her bright and beautiful approach to our mix series. Over the course of two hours she delves deep into lots of cuddly strains of house music from deep and jazzy to romantic, melodic and late night. Her tender touch draws you in close and keeps you there with lots of warm chords, pillowy pads and plenty of love struck grooves. This is one perfectly suited to long winter nights and snuggling up with close friends.
Cleveland bridges many different musical divides. He is a DJ, producer and party promoter from Luxembourg but based in Brussels, and in all those disciplines likes to focus more on mood and texture than specific genres. He has a sound that is thought provoking and complex but never too academic, and has explored the deeper, more synth heavy end of the dance spectrum onlabels like Hivern Discs, WHITE and ESP Institute. Across ninety minutes here he offers up lovably loose grooves that range from musical and lavish to more heads down and propulsive. Tripped out house bleeds into twisted techno and floating ambient laced grooves drift next to minimal classics, all in the sort of story telling fashion that also defines his excellent shows on Red Light Radio. Heady yet engaging, Cleveland's sound is very much deserving of your attention.
Australian Lauren Hansom has the sort of expansive and immersive sound that makes her a perfect fit for a range of settings. She’s proven this with radio shows on Red Light Radio, NTS and Worldwide FM, as well as DJ sets everywhere from Lente Kabinet to Gottwood Festival via plenty of key European clubs. As an avid vinyl collector she delves deep into unknown corners of jazz, soft pop, acid, Balearic, you name it, and stitches everything together with seamless style. On this week’s mix, Hansom plots a global journey through sound that serves as a perfectly tropical and exotic post—summer comedown. After starting with new age bliss and clean synth tracks, the drums take on many forms from acid to electro to garage, all with a curious future-retro feel and wide range of cultural and musical references.
Based in Amsterdam Elias Mazian is a well known face. He has released an eclectic series of forward thinking house and electronics and has become a keen member of the Red Light Radio family. We had the pleasure of hosting him on the beach at The Crave festival in The Hague a few weeks back and were wholeheartedly impressed with his eclectic portrayal of wandering hip hop, funk, soul, disco and house. A talented disc jockey and a charming man. This month marked the release of a new EP from Elias on Mitchell Street Records - the imprint based in Glasgow run by Jasper James. It showcased a moody take on deep house and electro and followed on from previous appearances on Voyage Direct. It was a thoughtful reflection on the present state of modern electronics and marked a left of centre approach to the dancefloor - yet with distinctive drive. We asked Elias to record a mix as part of our main series and we are delighted with what's shown up...

Expect the unexpected. That's the philosophy Rotterdam-based DJ mad miran promotes in her DJ sets. A regular on the Dutch capital's mainstay Red Light Radio and a face behind the counter at the infamous Clone record shop, Miran has fast become one of the country's most promising DJs. Although she only played her first DJ set in a club a couple of years ago, she's already landed a residency at Trouw successor De School and become part of the Strange Sounds From Beyond family, seeing her name spread like wildfire and lead to a string of gigs across Europe. We invited her to dive into her record bag for us and the result is 80 minutes of leftfield electro, raw breaks and introspective electronica. Enter into the crazy world of mad miran...

Crazed rhythms from a Red Light Radio favourite. Interview with @marylakeworld: melbournedeepcast.net/portfolio/mary-lake "I recorded this mix at home. Winter arrived and although I'm not a fan of this season, it does have a certain mystery, coldness and darkness to it which I can appreciate. I selected tracks that reflect this feeling. In my opinion, a genre of music that lends itself to this mood in particular is minimal techno, hence I used tracks such as “Hornitus” by Ø, “The Swamp” by Matthew Herbert and “Sea Club-Rush” by Grim Lusk."
The long haired founder of Red Light Radio, frontman of Stallion Stud and all-round Amsterdam legend is the first one to treat us to an hour of weirdness in 2019. DJ Soulseek takes over the wheel. Happy new year and embrace the weirdness! X r. @redlightradio @artificialdance
Rotterdam-based vinyl-only DJ, electronic music producer and Red Light Radio Resident-DJ, Panda Lassow generally plays all types of Beats and World Bass music. As her experimental electronic music alter ego Petra Lundawerk she started DJing in 2004 while studying in Dresden, Germany. Influenced by Dresden-based musicians like Kern, Mr. Incognito and Credit 00, she started making music herself in 2008. From 2010 till 2012 she was publishing her own podcast called Wunschkonzert IEM Podcast. Some co-workings with Frankfurt/Main based producer Suspicion Breeds Confidence, Berlin-based producer and artist Grischa Lichtenberger and London-based artist Italia Rossi followed. The Dub and Drum'n'Bass-scene of Dresden never lost attraction. Influenced by that, but always forward-looking, she explored herself in different genres like Beats, Wereld Bass, Jungle & Rave, Dub, Ghetto & Future Funk and many more. New influences came with moving to Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 2009. Since 2012 she owns her own vinyl-only label named ANUS Records. As part of Bass Odyssey and The Beatmakers Union (TBMU) in Rotterdam she takes part live-beatmaking sessions and is connected to and connecting local beatmakers - new co-workings and releases are expected. Tilsburg's Ben Penn stunned us with his wild and colourful two-tracker for Young Marco's Safe Trip last year, as well as his heavy DJ sets on the likes of Red Light Radio. He's cooking up another EP and full length album for this year, so we thought we'd get him in for a freaky mix before he gets super busy. From Trouw to Dekmantel via Rush Hour or Red Light Radio, Amsterdam never ceases to see the emergence of cultural actors who shine at the European scale and beyond. The city is also a playground for many interesting and different artists, making Amsterdam one of the most fascinating European city when it comes to electronic (but not only) music. This reputation contrasts with the geographical size of the Dutch capital. Relatively limited, it actually explains Amsterdam’s cultural footprint and the interest it arouses. Definitively at “human scale”, the city allows indeed a strong interaction between artists and other cultural actors, stimulating interdisciplinarity and overlap between different scenes. The result is a strong cohesion, and especially a lively and open scene that continues to evolve to offer to the rest of Europe new sound fields. Nachtbraker (Amsterdam, Netherlands) After receiving widespread recognition for books like “How Does He Do It?” and “Glorious Misunderstandings”, Maurits Verwoerd decided to start a career as a music producer. Though few doubted his skills as an artist, most of Maurits’ neighbours thought differently about his compositions, forcing him to start producing music in the underground dungeons of Amsterdam. Coming out occasionally, but only at night, slowly made him well known among friends and enemies as Nachtbraker (Dutch for night hawk). Nachtbraker’s exposure to a wide range of genres are clearly audible in his music, ranging from ecstatic slow grooves and unconventional dub tracks to straight-up 4/4 house. His most recent 2018 Small Towel People EP was premiered by Mixmag and given a score of 9.5 / 10 by DJ Mag. Holding residencies on Red Light Radio and Rinse FM whilst also delivering podcasts for Feel My Bicep and DGTL, the Quartet Series label boss continues to receive widespread recognition. Now it's time to welcome an unsung hero of sorts. Some might know Margie from her role at Rush Hour in Amsterdam where she continues to work on press and in the curation of the 'House Of Music' magazine. As a disc jockey she has amassed a firm array of knowledge learnt across many years and she digs deeper than most. Bending the narrative between genres she is not one to be pigeon holed and her show on Red Light Radio demonstrates this in fine style. She weaves a tale of musicality through storytelling, an intricate presentation of sound and experience. We are delighted to be able to welcome her to our Ransom Note mix series, something which we've been trying to accommodate for far, far too long. She contributes in fine style with a blend of house, electronics and beyond.

I just went in there with a tote bag filled with some of the stuff I've been listening to and playing out plus a few new records I'd picked up that particular weekend. 90s techno, electro, emotional synth pop, records played on the wrong speed, Italian house, new-beat and various other odds and ends. The opening track is by an old New Zealand band Headless Chickens, thanks Michael K for showing me that one."
CC:DISCO! A mainstay of the Melbourne club scene, CC began connecting with audiences just like the heroes before her – through FM radio. Having presented shows since the age of 15, her weekly slot on local institution PBS FM ‘Smoke and Mirrors' is now celebrated as the essential start to every Friday night. All of this air time has primed her to knock out guest spots on NTS, Red Light Radio, Worldwide and Dublab. CC will join us in March (Good Friday) across Saint Lukes and Sub Club for her Sensu debut.
// Kepler-61 b > DF-18 // Incoming transmission: Job Sifre Another of the many standout DJs to emerge from the ever-fertile Amsterdam scene, Job Sifre is now rightfully starting to get props from outside the city. Helping him on the way is his monthly Red Light Radio show, which shows off his cosmic and electronic take on synth heavy house. He has backed that up with compelling sets at places like De School and Salon Zur Wilde Renate, as well as with a fresh new wave and house EP that was the first release on Interstellar Funk’s new label, Artificial Dance. Job will play with us at Dekmantel Festival in August, so first offers up a snapshot of his current sound. Over the course of nearly two hours, he takes his time to go from laidback and horizontal to more upright and drum lead. The sounds are often laden with icy synths, the drums are heavyweight and the atmospheres are spooky and sci-fi. His is a truly electronic world devoid of human life and it touches on new wave, macho disco, cosmic house and prickly dub in frosty and freaky ways.
There is no one quite like San Proper. The Dutchman is a rare and real character in a scene that is all too often devoid of genuine personality. It shows in the wild music he makes, the wonderful Red Light Radio shows he hosts and the often weird sets he serves up at clubs and festivals round the world. Releasing most often on Rush Hour but also on Dopeness Galore and Perlon, he can do dark minimal as well as big hearted soul and can lay down a big guitar riff or program an off kilter drum line all with equal élan. His Dekmantel podcast finds the Dr. dig deep into his vinyl collection and serve up 23 slabs of soul, funk and afro magic across two hours that feel very personal. Traversing scenes, styles and tempos with flawless mixing and blending, he tells a very colour tale that breaks all the rules of a usual mix yet still makes complete sense. It is the sound of a selector who has open ears and who, ten years since his first release, is as thrilling and unpredictable as ever.
Yuri Boselie, better known as Cinnaman, plays ‘music without borders’. DJ, curator and producer, Yuri is one of Amsterdam’s brightest talents. He hosts a monthly radio show at Red Light Radio and he is part of the Rush Hour Record, the De School’s crew and the Dekmantel ‘s family. His eclectic and hypnotic DJ sets are the perfect soundtrack for each moment. For LiveSoundtracks he prepared an ethereal and melancholic mix. Colour is the name of the game. We all need a little bit of colour, flair and originality in our lives. Matisa has it in abundance, a fine role model with impeccable taste in music and beautiful selection. The Italian disc jockey has helped to refocus the stereotypes sometimes associated with Italian dance music as she digs incredibly deep for far reaching selections across a wide spectrum of genres. With a penchant for vinyl she has quickly become one of our favourite selectors and we predict big things for this girl in the coming year following recent features on the likes of Red Light Radio in Amsterdam and a wide array of club dates. She digs deep as she contributes to our mix series which showcases some of the most interesting new faces from across the spectrum of electronic music as she delivers a special all vinyl mix.
Red Light Radio regular Steele Bonus is Amsterdam based but Sydney born. In the last couple of years he has emerged as a champion of darkened synth pop, post punk and Italo disco sounds, and is an expert at mixing them together into something that sounds old yet new. A regular at various parties round his native Australia before making the move to Europe, he is now growing in profile over here and showcases exactly why with a one hour mix for our series. From wonky machine sounds to dystopian 80s new wave via crisp electro and techno, it is a coherent journey that is tight and fresh throughout.
Dekmantel Podcast 25 stars not just one fine artist, but offers both Amsterdam don Young Marco and French forerunner Gilb'R. The two played a stunning back to back set in the end of May at this year's Lente Kabinet, Dekmantel's sister festival based in the surroundings of Amsterdam. This podcast is a recording of that set as it was played at a lively Red Light Radio stage. Young Marco and Gilb'R pairing up for a great session of playing energetic, unheard gems, seems a very logical thing to do as both men have their roots in record digging and producing out of the ordinary house music.
