In episode #164 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar meets James Atkin and Ian Dench from EMF to discuss their new album, 'The Beauty and The Chaos,' released on January 26th 2024. The Beauty and The Chaos finds the band at their full creative tilt, delivering Classic EMF! And sees the band reunited with Ralph Jezzard, who produced their first two albums, Schubert Dip and Stigma. This energetic and diverse album features ten finely crafted songs, with the opening track and first single, Hello People, setting the tone with its indie grove and its call to stand against the hate myths of immigration. A further nine songs take the listener on a musical rollercoaster embracing Techno punk (Reach For The Lasers), Nasty Northern Soul (Read The Room), Swampy Electronica (I've Been Down), Prog Punk (Stardust) and Trip Trop gospel (Lookout Mountain), before the psychedelic Do It Again, a song about trying to grow up but failing, closes this sumptuous album in the best possible way. Along with the original version of Hello People, there is the Hello People' Facts vs Fear remix' featuring Stephen Fry, a bonus track at the album's end. In this interview, James and Ian delve into the writing and recording of the album, live shows and lots more. James Atkin shares his Splash Story ...EMF are number 1 with Hello People featuring Stephen Fry  Hello People with its' indie groove is a call to stand with tolerance against the hate-myths of immigration whilst putting a smile on people's faces. Why Stephen Fry? Unbelievable was on his ‘100years of the BBC' happy mix (along with Dancing Queen and Mrs Robinson) but he was a fan way back before it was a global smash. We met him at an EMF gig at the Astoria in 1992 and he kindly agreed to appear on an EMF song in 1995, reading a dystopian poem about self-destruction on ‘Glass Smash Jack' from our Cha Cha Cha album. The message of our new song ‘Hello People' is about tolerance, who better then to verify the facts and emotions about immigration in the face of a flood of hate speech than the most intellectually rigorous and entertaining brain in the world and our very own National Treasure the great Stephen Fry.” - EMF.Watch the Hello People (featuring Stephen Fry) video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVlMG585qNcThe Hello People video features  is a celebration: It features the faces of EMF's fans. Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you're all well, we're back with another episode recorded at Slam Dunk 2022. The 2023 festival is just under 3 weeks away and looks to be another awesome day with a line up mixing up some of the best Punk / Rock and bands around with a good blend of legends and new faces. Here I speak to Canadian rocker and host of the great podcast Lead Singer Syndrome: Silverstein vocalist Shane Told who highlights my love of tapping - Brendan and Tyler from Canadian hardcore band COUNTERPARTS and wrapping up this episode is Chuck Ragan and yet another Canadian, Mr Chris Crestwell of Hot Water Music. As I've said before, this was a busy day but filled with conversations featuring absolute heroes and I genuinely enjoyed speaking to and meeting each of these guests. Festival slots can be tricky as these conversations are often very restricted by time and guests are being ushered around a heaving press tent with music from at least 2 stages competing against each other as well as our voices however everyone of the guests from Slam Dunk, not just this episode, were incredibly giving with their responses and hopefully these are as much fun to listen to as they were to record. Hello People, welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you're all well. We are back with the second of 4 episodes recorded at Slam Dunk 2022 - if you haven't checked out the first - it's a treat and features Knuckle Puck, Beauty School, As December Falls and Sum 41 - it was quite a day I would recommend going back and listening to it to the episode - it was a lot of fun recording the conversations. This is episode Fifty eight and features Dan ‘Soupy' Campbell, of The Wonder Years and Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties.I was a late comer to The Wonder Years but when I first heard Came Out Swinging I was hooked and this has been a conversation I've wanted to record for ages. Dan did not disappoint and was an absolute pleasure to talk to, it was awesome to hear about his early days with music, the formation of The Wonder Years and their progression from a crazy joke band to how they are now. I'd not heard ‘Won't be pathetic forever' until just before this conversation and hadn't realised it was the first thing they released as this version of the band. It's still great and I've included a YouTube link to the EP if you haven't heard it. The set at Slam Dunk was also brilliant, they gave an absolute master class in delivering a tight and emotive performance, they don't currently have any live dates but their last U.K. tour with Beauty School was great and I'm excited for when they come back round although Dan's other project Arron West and the roaring twenties will be at 2000 trees this year so if you are there and the line up for that looks amazing, then go check that out. https://youtu.be/bTSkMXz7XrY Hosted on Acast. Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you are all having a lovely time whatever you're up to. Here in Yorkshire we've had some delightful weather mixed with a few huge downpours which I believe is the official northern confirmation of Summer. As U.K. recording this introduction festival season is well under way - Slam Dunk has been and was fantastic - more on that in a couple of weeks, Download looks to have been amazing and Glastonbury has finally returned. , it's been brilliant to see some form of normality resume both in the general world and the live music and events industry. This is episode 55 and features a man who is loved by so many people, Mr Benji Webbe of reggae / metal superstars Skindred. When I mentioned to people who know him that I was about to chat with Benji or letting people know this episode is coming out, the response without fail was always, ahh I love Benji, what a great guy. And after getting to spend some time chatting, I would 100% echo this sentiment. Not only are Skindred fantastic musicians but they know how how to put on a show and Benji is the ringmaster of this. I have had the conversation about how great Skindred are with many people over the years and the common consensus is; they simply do not know how to put on not even a bad show but even a mediocre one. If for whatever reason you are not a fan of this band, check them out live. It's a party you don't want to miss. In the short time we had he was great to chat to and very open about the experiences he's had over the years. I was very close to getting a sneaky listen to the forthcoming album but time got the better of us as he was a busy man!I have included the first song I remember I remember hearing along with another classic Skindred track to the wiypodcast playlist over on Spotify - there are many great tracks from guests, give it a listen. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5WguWZu1N8br97h97FOXXm?si=VJtyJlOoRAi8rlb14iQSvQ Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you're all well it's been way too long since the last episode due to contracting covid and life but I've got lots of great episodes coming up which I'm excited to share. This is episode 54 which was recorded way back in July 2021 and features Andy Farrow of Northern Music company. This was one of the first times I'd visited Saltaire which is a beautiful village just outside of bradford in West Yorkshire. Andy was great to chat to and it was really interesting to hear from someone who manages, publishes and books bands about the changes he has seen in the music industry over his career. We chat about some of the bands he works with and has worked with including Opeth, Devin Townsend, Paradise Lost, The Wildhearts and many more. Just like my other guests, Andy was very honest and happy to cover a whole range of topics which, as someone who is fascinated by the working of the music Indic that are often kept in the background, I loved hearing about his experiences and thoughts on the future of touring, streaming and vinyls importance. I could quite easily have continued chatting to Andy for ages but alas I think I made him for a visit to one of Saltaire's beverage emporiums!  Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, this is episode 53 and the first episode recorded in 2022. Due to the ongoing covid pandemic, all of the planned recordings for January have been cancelled due to to either the gigs not going ahead or requiring to keep touring parties closed to outside visitors in order to keep the tour going - all of which makes perfect sense and I fully support. My guest this episode is Joe Cabrera of Leeds based band Beauty School who have signed to and have a very exciting year planned with some amazing shows already booked including a headline show at The Key Club in Leeds on 9th April, opening the Rock Scene stage at this years Slam Dunk Festival and some support dates in March which Joe announces in this conversation.  It was great hearing about Joe's journey in music thinking about a lot of the bands that influenced him and experiences he's had.  If you're not aware of Beauty School, firstly you're in for a treat especially if you are a fan of as their press release accurately describes as emo infused alternative rock but I'd add if you're a fan of hook laden catchy and well crafted music. I've been listening to 4 tracks including current single ‘Take it slow' and upcoming single ‘Pawn Shop Jewels' both of which have been stuck in my head for days.  Take It Slow has been added to the Wiypodcast playlist on Spotify and I will do the same with Pawn Hop Jewels once that has been released.  Before the conversation starts, I'd like to point out that background ambiance and coffee were provided by http://kapowcoffee.co.uk on the calls in Leeds. I strongly recommend it.  https://beautyschool.band/

Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you're all very well. This is episode 52 and wraps up the recordings from Slam Dunk Festival 2021 at Temple Newsam in Leeds.  This was a lovely way to end the day before heading out to enjoy The Alkaline Trio and NoFx, both of whom I last saw at Temple Newsam as part of the Leeds Festival nearly 20 years ago!   My guest is DJ Zoe London. Now I had only heard of Zoe around 8 months prior to meeting her but in that time I have noticed her name on Leeds MadiGras, Leeds & Reading Festival, the Download festival Pilot and In the park festival featuring McFly, scouting for girls and others. Having then seen a few videos from these events I was genuinely fascinated as to how she got into the DJ world and where her influences come from as she has built a solid reputation for her mixes and entertaining show.  I managed to get time with Zoe after she had finished with a few hours of press time and had made herself comfortable on the sofas. She was incredibly open and happy to chat about anything including how all other DJs she knew growing up are shit - not her exact words and I may be exaggerating a little there.  Zoe educates me in the world of Twitch streaming and ways in which the DJ community have supported each other through the pandemic as well as the attitudes she has to deal with as a woman in the music industry.

Hello People! Welcome to episode 51 of the When In Yorkshire Podcast, how are you? I hope you are all getting by as well as can be. I am back with another episode recorded at Slamdunk festival in Leeds - it was a busy day! If you've seen who my guest is this week, have a general Interest in punk rock and or podcasts, then this man needs not introduction. For the sake of everyone else, I will still do my best to summarise Mr Matt Stocks.  I first remember seeing Matt conducting interviews on Skuzz TV and then he was one of the voices behind Kerrang Radio both of which were done very well and were informative and entertaining however after not hearing anything of him for a few years, I noticed his name crop up on a few festival posters where he was DJing and then it was his podcast Life in The Stocks which really captures my attention. I can't remember how I came across it but I remember listening to his episode with Frank Turner, then Tom Green, Jamie Lenman, Andy Cairns and Grant Nicholas all of which captivated me and I have been hooked on Life in the stocks since. It's not just the amazing guests he manages to get, although there are some huge names from the world of entertainment but it's the tone and candid nature of the conversations. Matt has a great ability to get his guests on a level where they seem to feel comfortable covering any topic and many divulge very intimate thoughts and feelings. As a listener, it feels like a blend of interview and then getting to hear a private conversation between friends which ticks all the boxes for me.  And then we move on to his latest podcast with Killswitch Engage vocalist Jessie Leech he which, if you haven't heard - I am jealous of the amount of amazing hours of conversation you have ahead of you. These episodes focus on the people anf their experiences only really touching on their work if it's relevant and really has created a community where listeners are guests on the show too.  Links for both of these podcasts are in the description for you to check out as well as links to Matt's first book - transcripts of sections from his life the stocks podcast covering various topics and it really is a great read covering conversations with the likes of Andrew wk l, Doug Stanhope,    Whilst Matt is known to be an open book and I was aware he would answer anything I asked if him, I inte ntionally kept this conversation light as it really felt like the day was a real milestone in the journey of his life in music and I wanted to get his take on this. There are many more questions I'd love to ask Matt and hopefully we'll get to do a follow up episode in the future. For now I'll let you listen to episode 51 from slam dunk festival with Matt Stocks.    https://open.spotify.com/show/3i5ON0eGOgaWgX58FG7rNk?si=K0FSW35zTMaHJ-wGpW2ywA   https://open.spotify.com/show/4l04uOo5aE4ueSfeBREpQY?si=qEj7C95qShyxROfuaohwZw   Life in the Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Volume One) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1644281872/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_SHM3MTH0PFZ8331DG4FG

Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, hope you are all getting by ok. This is episode Forty Nine featuring Sleeping Soul and Dive Dive bassist as well as Vans For Bands head honcho, the very tall, Tarrant Anderson.  Adding to my collection of The Sleeping Souls (Ben and Callum - I'm coming for you!) and another conversation held at Slam Dunk festival where The Sleeping Souls played on the Punk in Drublic stage, this was a conversation I've wanted to have since way back in January of 2019 after speaking to Nigel Powel about Dive Dive and was reignited after seeing the amazing work VFB did throughout the pandemic.  We chat about these topics and more bit, if you have not taken the time to fully appreciate the magnificent bass work that Tarrant adds to Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls or even if you have - please go and check out not just the back catalogue of his work but also any live videos you can find as, without leaping into the air, he without fail delivers a technically perfect  and visually entertaining performance every time - or at least every time I've seen him play.

Hello People! Welcome back to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you're all very well. It's been quite a while since the last episode but it's great to be back! This is episode 45 and features a conversation with Ben Buddy Slack of The Swan Song Project who I heard about a couple of years ago when a video appeared on my Facebook timeline about Ben and an experience he had with Alabama 3 - we talk about this and what happened so I won't ruin that however the work that The Swan Song Project does is fascinating and hit a chord with me as it really highlighted the power and impact music and the arts in general can have on our lives especially as a way of processing emotions. It was great talking to Ben and hearing about his own experiences and what caused him to set this project up.  I mention in the conversation that this podcast does not have a Patreon subscription service or anything like that so if you do enjoy this podcast and are in a position to contribute - please visit and help keep Swan Song Project going. https://swansongproject.co.uk/ https://swansongproject.co.uk/donate/ https://www.facebook.com/TheSwanSongProject/videos/854142078298629/

POSE- Points of Self Examination for Christians

Hello People of God, welcome back to my channel where I share with you points of self-examination for re-evaluating our Christian walk. In today's episode, I will be sharing with you the lessons God has been teaching me about prejudice and why it has been the greatest tool of the enemy from keeping me back from showing up as my authentic self. Yes, I had reasons to hide away and keep myself from shining because people told me and made me feel like I was not enough and so my denying them my gift of self was justified. But that was in the days of immaturity but now God is calling me to more. I am capable of more but what's stopping me? In this episode, I share with you some dreams that I had which the Lord clearly points out what the issues are and I share with you my reflections, fears, and resolutions. How about you? have you ever been prejudiced against someone or some people? Would you like to unpack the causes and see the way out as well as promises on the other side? Then Join me on this self-discovery journey. I do hope you listen to the end so you can really enjoy learning what i've resolved to do and also join your faith with mine for your success in the journey ahead of you too. But in case you're not, I'm including my notes below so you can have a sneak-peek into most of the topics I discuss even though the audio goes deeper to share more insights from scriptures and talks about leveraging God's forgiveness to get to the business of "rise and shine". Thanks again for listening! NOTES 1. Institutional 2. Destination 3. Blessings Cause and effect based on dreams in week 3, Jul 2021 Cause mode | prejudice Institutional - friends Destination - self & others Blessings - family background Effects No job- can't inherit the earth if you won't stick with it. Wrong location- lack of ambition and thinking I'm better than others Delays - not being humble but asserting self wisdom instead of serving entitled people In those 3 dreams, I remember a voice speaking to me 1. Stay and clean it up 2. They're not as bad as you think 3. The fact that they're not your family doesn't mean they're slaves Examples from scriptures. Peter was called to initiate the gospel mission to gentile nations but he was so prejudiced that God had to pass a message using a terrifying dream. Jonah was so deeply prejudiced against the people of Niniveh that he would rather die than go preach to them. In the parable of the talents, the man who hid his talents was because he was prejudiced against his master. This blinded him to the potential of his 1 gift... In the teaching about perfection, Jesus was asking us to be perfect as our heavenly father is who doesn't hold back benefits from those who are not just but blesses all who ask him generously. My inference 1. From my friends' conversation 2. From the news and lack mentality 3. Personal righteousness and wisdom and intuitive perception of others intention From the laws of God: these transgress 1. 9 2. 3 3. 5 Standard! These are new dispensation sins not old ones Lessons 1. Don't be envious or carried away by comparisons and feeling insecure but own up to where you are and stop forcing yourself to measure up because your time will come too. Be merciful to yourself so that when your time comes you'll arrive there gracefully. 2. Delivery of your kingdom assignments is dependent on your ability to go where God is sending you. 3. You gotta serve people regardless of their feeling of entitlement because they hold the key to the blessing of your ministry. #forgive, #shine, #pray

Amon Düül II - Kismet (1978) From Wikipedia: Amon Düül began in 1967 as a radical political art commune of Munich-based artists calling themselves, in part, after the Egyptian Sun God Amon. The word Düül originally had no intended meaning.  The commune attained underground popularity for its free-form musical improvisations, performed around the happenings and demonstrations of the youth movement at the time. The commune had a liberal attitude to artistic freedom, valuing enthusiasm and attitude over artistic ability, and as a result, band membership was fluid; anyone who was part of the commune could be part of the group. They issued a declaration: "We are eleven adults and two children which are gathered to make all kinds of expressions, also musical."[5] A faction within the commune was more ambitious, conventional, and musically structured than the commune society overall. This led to a split within the collective, and in September 1968 they performed at the International Essen Song Days—Germany's first underground festival—as two groups, "Amon Düül" and "Amon Düül II", at the suggestion of drummer Peter Leopold. Amon Düül engaged in exuberant open-ended experimentation that at times equaled their psychedelic rock equivalents in countries such as the USA or Brazil (e.g. [Ed: The vastly better] Os Mutantes), with a focus on political activities. The members were close to Kommune 1 in Berlin and boasted, for a time, a prominent member in the model and activist Uschi Obermaier. Amon Düül signed a contract with the firm "Metronome Records", and continued for seven years with varying degrees of success and in various guises. They wound down in 1973 after releasing four official albums (and a posthumous fifth), though all except one were recorded at the 1968 sessions for their debut. Apparently, the man responsible was producer Peter Meisel, who released the albums without the band's approval in an attempt to capitalize on the success of Amon Düül II. The LPs are these days regarded as unique, if unessential, records in the history of German rock. In contrast, their Paradieswärts Düül album featured a pastoral, folk-influenced sound. The name 'Amon Düül' was trademarked by Chris Karrer and Peter Leopold of Amon Düül II, meaning that re-issues of Amon Düül's albums required to license the name from them. Like so so so so so many acts of the day, Amon Düül started out with a pure, sincere (if unlistenable) concept and ended up doing disco. Carole King - Disco Tech (1978) And ended up doing disco! During the nadir of her career, Carole King recorded with a band named Navarro, which co-wrote this dreck. They themselves put out two albums in the later '70s and faded away. Carole King returned in the video era with a song called "City Streets" which, to my ears, sounds so trite and overproduced that it literally means nothing. Her fella at the time died shortly after this was recorded. That's him on the cover.  Hello People - Future Shock (1974) Hello People - Destiny (1974) Hello People - Creego (1974) Two versions. One produced by Rundgren, and the other (somehow...better) recorded at home with fine TEAC equipment.  With the rock-steady guidance of Todd Rundgren and the big break of being asked to team up with TEAC to show off the possibilities of new reel-to-reel home recording technology, it seemed like a match made in heaven. Bowie. Alice Cooper. Peter Gabriel. Mime Rock was due. Alas, it was not to be. I am the proud owner of both of these records, and I feel very, very alone. And yes, they cover "Just One Victory".  From Discogs:  "Recording demonstration; from microphone placing, editing, balancing, channeling, terminology, sound recording & effects. One full-length song in this recording, it was not recorded inside a Studio; instead, it was fully recorded in someone's house to demonstrate the flexibility of the TEAC multi-track tape record. Many clear examples of what it takes to record a song, all the potential obstacles that come with making a song using all analog instruments. Home recording tips; recording at home with the 3340-S multi-track tape recorder can offer many of the important elements of the studio experience without the bill. No experience required; you have the opportunity to work ideas in private and to experiment with your own sounds, and learn what you need to know at your own pace. Recording music, like making music, is fun as it is challenging." Daddy Dewdrop - Nanu Nanu  (I Wanna Get Funky Wich You) (1978) His big hit was "Chick-a-Boom (Don't Ya Jes' Love It)". This is a mawkish attempt at a cash-in.  Deftly combining the Mork and Mindy zeitgeist with the Disco zeitgeist, he somehow creates something unlistenable and cheap. His website claims he wrote a song for Ringo Starr. Or that Ringo covered a song of his. That song, "I Wanna Be Santa Claus", was co-written by Mark Hudson, who was the lead singer of The Hudson Brothers, who POACA will remember as the bearded fellow on The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show, which aired on Saturday mornings, from September 7, 1974, to August 30, 1975. Chuckie Margolis!!! Ahahahah.....    The brothers released "serious" albums throughout the '70s.  Donny and Marie - I Want It Back (1978) From the movie Goin' Coconuts, which is a graphic retelling of the Dresden bombing. Graphic.  Franki Vallli - Save Me, Save Me (1978) From the album titled, "...Is The Word". Let there be no mistake. He had lots of momentum. Pretty good shelf-life for a '60s singer. His career was revitalized in 1975 with "December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)" and "Who Loves You". I like Frankie Valli very much. You hear his voice and you know. I think of all the crooners from back then, he deserves his revivals. It didn't hurt to have Barry Gibb behind you in 1978. In a sense, they were contemporaries from different places.  And he was in "The Sopranos".   If after one listen you can't tell who wrote this, you are in the wrong place. Off with you!!!  Gnidrolog - Snails (1972) No one mentions Gnidrolog when they are listing good prog bands. Believe me. I was swimming in the prog for a good decade, and not one soul mentioned them. If I were to compare their two albums to any other artists, it would be Octopus-era Gentle Giant or Gong. I really like them. They didn't last long, but I think their productions were nice. Especially... Gnidrolog - Social Embarrassment (1972) Members Colin Goldring (vocals / guitar) and Stewart Goldring (guitar / vocals) went on to form Pork Dukes, and either ironically or to satisfy a hunger for, you know, the Zeitgeist, made the lyrics base and the music basic. One album and no one cared.  Jay Traynor - Love Is In The Air (1978) Jay Traynor of Jay and the Americans tries to jump onto the Disco train by covering the 1977 hit by John Paul Young. Look carefully at the composers.  Kitty and the Haywoods - Disco FairyLand (1978) Kitty had a long recording history as a background vocalist for such acts as Curtis Mayfield. She was also a member of The New Rotary Connection after Minnie Riperton departed Rotary Connection. Kristie and Jimmy McNichol - Hot Tunes (1978) It was "Little Darlings".  Little Nell - Fever (1978) Too much cocaine will make the dancers dance to everything.  Lenny McDowell - Locomotive Breath (1978) And what better way to bring another award-wanting episode to a close than to play a flute version of "Locomotive Breath".
