Moondance is the album that established Van Morrison as a solo artist. However, he was an accomplished musician before this, first as a multi-instrumentalist in Irish show bands of the late 50's, then as the lead singer of the band Them. Moondance is either Morrison's second or third solo album…depending upon how you count it. The first album entitled “Blowin' Your Mind!” was put out without Morrison's permission — or even knowledge, and he does not consider it to be a proper album. However, he had signed a contract with Bang! Records without paying much attention to the details, and gave up much of his rights. Nevertheless, this first album did contain Morrison's first solo pop single, “Brown-Eyed Girl,” which is one of this most popular today. After considerable wrangling and the death of producer Bert Berns, Morrison was able to put out an album on his own terms for Warner Brothers entitled “Astral Weeks.” While this album would be praised in the future, it was considered a failure at the time, producing no singles and not receiving much promotion.Moondance is where it all comes together for Morrison. It was more deliberately designed to have more accessible songs than the previous album, and it benefitted from the rising popularity of FM radio. Morrison's growing confidence in his own abilities and his sense of independence from the producers also were beneficial on this album. The result is an iconic album with a number of standards of 70's music.Bruce brings us this inspired album for this week's podcast. And It Stoned MeThis track leads off the album. The song reminisces about days being a kid, going fishing, drinking stream water from a jar, and just being high on life. The lyric about Jelly Roll may refer to jazz musician Jelly Roll Morton, an artist whom Morrison listened to with his father as a child. Van Morrison's dad had one of the biggest record collections in the area.Into the MysticThis track is about a spiritual quest. According to Wikipedia, Morrison says the song “is just about being part of the universe.” While it was not released as a single when the album was released it has become one of Morrison's most popular song, the second most streamed song on Spotify behind “Brown Eyed Girl.”Glad TidingsA deeper cut, this track is the final song on the album and the final song recorded for the album. The inspiration for the title was a letter Morrison received from a friend in London who had written on the envelope, “Glad Tidings from London.” When Morrison wrote back he also included “Glad Tidings from New York” on the envelope. The lyrics appear to address some of the issues Morrison had with Bert Berns and Bang! Records.MoondanceAs iconic as this song has become, it was not released as a single until September of 1977, seven-and-a-half years after the album. Morrison developed it while living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He considers it a sophisticated song, one that Frank Sinatra could be seen singing. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Love Theme (from the motion picture "Airport" )This film was one of the first disaster movies that would form its own genre in the 1970's. STAFF PICKS:Friends by FeatherWayne gets the staff picks started with a pop group from Los Angeles. Feather had a commercially oriented prog rock sound, with close harmonies and a bit of a country flavor. “Friends” was on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks, with its highest position at number 79. However, they did get a chance to showcase their song on Dick Clark's American Bandstand.Reflections of My Life by MarmaladeRob brings us a Scottish band that started in 1961 as the Gaylords. This is their biggest hit making it to number 10 in the U.S. The epic feel employs acoustic guitars and horns, and a guitar solo which employs studio effects that play the solo guitar riff backwards.Kentucky Rain by Elvis Presley Lynch's staff pick was recorded during Presley's landmark two-week sessions at American Sound Studio in Memphis. These sessions produced two hit albums in 1969, but this song didn't make the cut for either album. The single was on the charts during this month, rising as high as number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and features Ronnie Milsap on piano.Mississippi Queen by MountainBruce brings us a rocker to wrap up the staff picks. This hard rock group was active primarily from 1969 through 1972, and this single went to number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The opening cowbell originated when drummer Corky Laing got tired of the numerous retakes and just started using the cowbell to count off the song. Bassist Felix Pappalardi liked the sound and kept it in the completed track. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Viva Tirado (part 1) by El ChicanoThis Latin-jazz instrumental number was based on an original song about a bullfighter by Gerald Wilson.

She had saved them all. The letters were a way for Corky, away on the road for years on end, to keep in touch with his roots and also, to make sense of his life. This continues in Letters to Sarah, as Corky relives the first 50 years of his life, up until his mother's passing in 1998. Our guest today Corky Laing recently celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday on January 26th, 2023. The Canadian drummer is not slowing down; he's actively busy recording and performing all over the world. Never resting on his laurels, Laing never stopped playing, and to this day, he continues to front his new band, record and write a new album, “Finnish Sessions,” and squeeze in live performances. Corky will always be known as a member of the 70s superstar-legendary band Mountain, which also featured guitar God Leslie West and bassist and producer Felix Papalardi. The band's hit “Mississippi Queen” (co-written by Laing) is one of the most popular songs in the history of rock music. Everyone knows it from the cowbell count-in and Leslie's guitar riff that no one has ever forgotten. Listen in as we discuss not only Mountain but also West, Bruce & Laing” (yes, that Jack Bruce, from Cream). We discussed the new album with his new band from Finland, where Corky has been living, traveling back and forth from there to Long Island, to Canada to NYC. I've known Corky for over thirty years, and I will tell you, his energy is uplifting, and he's enjoying a fantastic ride into his upper years. Fans of Mountain and anyone who digs big powerful drums and hooky guitar riffs will enjoy his latest album. There are even a few ballads and guest appearances. Thanks for listening and supporting Drum Channel. See you next week!
Since Covid-19 hit the world, Corky has spent half of his time in Finland. He has worked with Finnish musicians on several projects for a decade, but the pandemic gave him an opportunity to fully concentrate on the tunes that had been brewing in his mind. He has a small demo studio in Finland and together with his trusted studio engineer and multi-instrumentalist, Harri Väyrynen, he was able to give shape to the new material. The first single, "Whatcha Doin?" features Corky's multi-talented friend, Maria Hänninen (of Mount Mary) on vocals and the wonderful Conny Bloom from Sweden (of Electric Boys) on guitar. Antero Priha's trumpet adds a distinctive flavor to track. The second single, "The Ball" out now! "To me the host of The City's Backyard Podcast(Matt Zako) this track sounds like MODERN MOUNTAIN!" It really rocks with Corky singing and on cow bell and drums...yes there is cow bell and plenty of it! Corky knocked it out of the park on this solo track! The rest of the album was recorded at E-studio in Finland in April with Petri Majuri in charge of the board. It was released on October 14, 2022 by On-Stage Records / TimeZone Records, Germany. Maria Hänninen (vocals, guitar, violin), John Vihervä (bass) and Harri Väyrynen (guitar, backing vox) joined Corky at the studio for the basic tracks. The album features Michael Monroe (harmonica) and Ian Hunter (keyboards) as special guests. Stay tuned for more tour dates from Corky in 2023! https://www.corkylaingworks.com/Here is the link to The Ball video!https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=mw7cekzUTOA

An all-time rock monster of a song, and a perfect '70s rock gem, Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" stands tall as a peak (pardon the pun) example of what American rock music could be. And there's a great story to the song, which we'll learn courtesy of Mountain's own Corky Laing, who brought the song to the band. Plus: “When I play Mississippi Queen, I think of Jesus Christ” Guitar pickup ash trays! “If you need to beat up a tornado, you throw on Mississippi Queen.” Mountain's Corky Laing walks us through the creation of this iconic rock track “A lot of our brothers and sisters never made it back:” Nantucket Sleighride and the reality of an often-greedy industry The name of the real Mississippi Queen revealed The pep-talk/wake-up call Corky Laing got from Warren Haynes A bonus Jimi Hendrix story, an extra PG-13 joke and more, only on the Patreon version! Legendary drummer Corky Laing talks to Ken Connors about his autobiography "Letters to Sarah".
Welcome to the Drum Channel Podcast with Billy Amendola. This week's guest is one of NYC's first-call-session-drummers of the 70s-80s and beyond, Allan Schwartzberg. Schwartzberg, who started playing Jazz at a young age, went on to record drums on AM/FM radio hits; “Tie A Yellow Ribbon” (Tony Orlando & Dawn), “Cats in the Cradle” (Harry Chapin), “Working My Way Back to You,” (The Spinners), “Funky President,” (James Brown) Never Can Say Goodbye,” (Gloria Gaynor), “Star Wars Theme,” (Meco), and Rod Stewart's “Great American Songbook,” (volumes 2,3,4), to name a few. In between his very busy session schedule, Allan was king of the jingles here in New York, as well as touring periodically with Stan Getz, Mountain, (filling in for Corky Laing), Peter Gabriel, (who first solo album after his departure from Genesis, featured Schwartz on drums), The Brecker Brothers and more. Enjoy!

Maria Hänninen & Conny BloomThe first single release from Corky Laing's forthcoming album Finnish Sessions.Label: On Stage Records / TimeZone Records, GermanyRelease date: February 11, 2022 (electronic)“I have had the pleasure of working with Finnish musicians on several projects for a decade now and during the covid pandemic, I had the opportunity to really concentrate on the new tunages that have been brewing in my mind. I have a small demo studio in Finland and together with my trusted studio engineer and multi-instrumentalist, Harri Väyrynen, I was able to give shape to the material. One of the first songs we worked on was the single, ‘Whatcha Doin?' After the demo was recorded, a brilliant trumpet player, Antero Priha happened to be visiting the studio and I thought it might be cool to add some brass to the track. I haven't used brass in my recordings since my solo album Making it on the Street in 1977, so it was a high time to revisit those sounds. However, what really brings the song home are the superb vocals of the multi-talented Maria Hänninen (of Mount Mary). I've known Maria for years and shared a stage with her for the first time in February 2019. I was thrilled that Maria jumped on the opportunity to participate in the recordings, and you will be hearing more of her vocals (and guitar and violin) on the other tracks too. Conny Bloom's (of Electric Boys) sublime guitar work provided the icing on the cake. I haven't met Conny since the beginning of the millennium when he joined Mountain for a few songs on a cruise out of Stockholm, Sweden, but I've followed his career and Maria has kept in touch with him more frequently. It's wonderful collaborating with Conny on this project. Like, Maria, Conny will be featured on several of the tracks. The final mixes of the single were done by the masterful Petri Majuri. Petri (of E-Studio, Finland) will be the main studio engineer for the rest of the album. Hope you enjoy ‘Whatcha Doin?' There's much more to come later this year!”Corky Lainghttps://www.corkylaingworks.com/https://www.facebook.com/MariaHanninenMusic/http://connybloom.se.mtaprod.se/artist/conny-bloom/
It is amazing the passion there still is until this day for The Fillmore East memories! Concert promoter Bill Graham is no longer with us but we wanted to pay tribute to him on his birthday January 8th. He was born in 1931 and died in a helicopter crash on October 25th 1991. Bill had accomplished a great deal for the music world in just a few short years down in the village of New York City at The Fillmore East! Musicians loved playing there and fans lined up to buy tickets and to see concerts for just $3, $4 and $5 dollars! In this episode we interview researcher/talent agent Ken Franklin about the Fillmore days and revisit previous interviews with performers and staffers from The Fillmore East in "The Best OF The Fillmore East" podcast documentary! We talk about Bill and what he meant to so many as a rock concert promoter. Other special guests: Performers: Henry Gross from Sha Na Na, Corky Laing from Mountain, and Larry Tasse from Hello People. Former Fillmore East staffers: Allan Arkush, Jerry Pompili, Amalie Rothchild and Bruce Shindler! Sometimes unexpected things happen when recording podcasts, so when I lost my connection with legendary Mountain drummer Corky Laing in the middle of our conversation, I didn't panic. But I wasn't prepared for him to come back on the Zoom call with the news that Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts had died. Aside from that shocking development, I enjoyed talking with Corky about him being on the road again, his recent Toledo Sessions release and his Pompeii The Secret Sessions release, writing "Mississippi Queen," and a whole lot more. Corky is an energetic and funny guy and it was a blast catching up with him. To find out more about Corky's music and shows, visit his website here. I appreciate you listening! CORKY LAING'S MOUNTAINSince 2015 Corky has been touring the world celebrating the musical legacy of Mountain. A 50th Anniversary of the Mississippi Queen Cowbell World Tour was supposed to start in the USA in the Spring of 2020, but that has been postponed due to the global pandemic. Corky, Mark Mikel (vocals, bass & keyboards), and Richie Scarlet (guitar) are eagerly waiting for it to be safe to hit the road again. Check the TOUR page for information about rescheduled gigs. LETTERS TO SARAH - Corky's autobiographyLetters to Sarah is a rock autobiography with a difference. In addition to the exceptionally honest and endearing voice of Corky chronicling the ups and downs of his life, there are excerpts from dozens of letters (out of the c. 200) that Corky wrote to his mother, Sarah, between the years 1963 and 1997. The letters were a way for Corky, away on the road for years on end, to keep in touch with his roots and also, to make sense of his life. This continues in Letters to Sarah, as Corky relives the first 50 years of his life, up until his mother's passing in 1998. Letters to Sarah was written together with Tuija Takala, PhD, who started working with Corky on Playing God: The Rock Opera in 2012, gradually became his manager and partner, and with whom Corky has since collaborated on a number of projects. Letters to Sarah is available on Amazon as an eBook, audiobook (read by Corky himself) and paperback and has received 5-star reviews across the board. https://www.corkylaingworks.com/

Red and Jerry talk with legendary drummer Corky Laing about his book "Letters from Sarah", his time with Mountain and COWBELL
Corky Laing started his life in 1948 as the youngest of five siblings in Montreal, Canada. His early bands enjoyed a good local following, opened for many of the popular British invasion acts and, ultimately, got a record deal with Atlantic Records in New York. Through the teenage summers, his band was a regular on the Island of Nantucket, Massachusetts and frequented clubs in New York City. In September 1969, his life changed for good when Mountain happened. There started a few crazy years of rock mayhem. Mountain was followed by West, Bruce and Laing – a super group featuring Leslie West, Jack Bruce and Corky that was destined for greatness, but brought to an untimely end by the darker forces of the music scene. After West, Bruce and Laing, Mountain continued to tour and record on and off. The months and years off left Corky with plenty of time for his own musical explorations and other careers. He released a solo album, almost set up another super group, worked in a driving service and in real estate, had a senior position at Chappell Music and became a vice president of A&R at Polygram, Canada. During his career, Corky has played, written and toured with the who’s who of rock. Keith Moon was a close pal, and Levon Helm, a mentor and friend. Eric Clapton played on his solo album and Tony Williams recommended to Jack Bruce that Corky should be included in West, Bruce and Laing. Corky Laing All Star Show Band included Mick Taylor, Lester Chambers and Meatloaf. Corky has written, among others, with Peter Frampton, Mick Jagger, Ian Hunter, Mick Ronson, and obviously, with Leslie West, Felix Pappalardi and Jack Bruce. At the Lone Star Café in New York, he partied with the likes of Robin Williams and John Belushi. However, Letters to Sarah (Polite Bystander Productions, 2019) is a rock autobiography with a difference. In addition to the exceptionally honest and endearing voice of Corky chronicling the ups and downs of his life, there are excerpts from dozens of letters (out of the c. 200) that Corky wrote to his mother, Sarah, between the years 1963 and 1997. She had saved them all. The letters were a way for Corky, away on the road for years on end, to keep in touch with his roots and also, to make sense of his life. This continues in Letters to Sarah, as Corky relives the first 50 years of his life, up until his mother’s passing in 1998. The book opens with a Foreword by the incomparable Kinky Friedman. It was written together with Corky’s manager and partner, Tuija Takala, PhD, who is a widely published academic author and who, initially discovered the letters to Sarah tucked away in a box at Corky’s rehearsal studio. Corky Laing, the Who, Cannibis Country, Mountain
Who wants to hear about the kiss that drummer Corky got from Keith Moon, back in the day when their bands were getting started and The Who was already madly popular? C'mon listen to the story of Keith's jacket along with tunes by Mountain, Corky Laing and the Perfect Child, The Who, Eddie Spaghetti, Moby Grape, and more plus comedy by Robin Williams!
Drummer Corky Laing is best known for his work with the hard rock band Mountain. Born in Montreal, he began his career with the famous soul doo wop vocal group The Ink Spots, before joining the band Energy, produced by a young Felix Pappalardi. In 1969, he left Energy and joined Pappalardi and guitarist Leslie West in Mountain, (replacing N.D. Smart). Along with Cream and Blue Cheer, Mountain would become "one of the seminal power trios in modern heavy psychedelic rock music." (-AllMusic.com) The band broke up in 1972, but has reunited several times and is still active today. Corky Laing has recorded and performed with Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, The Allman Brothers and many more legendary rock artists. He has been credited as the drummer responsible for turning the cowbell into a rock n' roll staple. In this conversation Corky talks about how being the youngest of five children led him to the drums, Keith Moon's influence, the road, drumming as a primal instinct, the importance of listening, and how drumming is "the most beautiful choreography you can do without standing up".
Okay AaA listeners, make sure you give this one a listen! The guys initially chat about something else that "Goes to 11" and then a bit about the remaining core of Mountain, Leslie West and Corky Laing. Jeff then talks about the review for the PRS Archon amplifier. But then it's time to bring in the guest of the week, a big gun in the Blues genre, (some even throw around the word "heir"). Straight from the Isle of Man, smack dab between Great Britain and Ireland, we bring you Davy Knowles. Enjoy!
Nantucket Sleighride - Mountain This live cut from Mountain's 1972 live album, Live - The Road Goes On Forever, clocks in at 17:34, while the studio cut of this song is a mere 5:50. What does that spell? J-A-M. Normally, I don't get into extended jams. Once a song passes the 8 or 10-minute mark, my attention wanders and I get impatient. I never would have made it as a Deadhead or Phish Head. What you'll hear is Leslie West's fabulous guitar work, and Steve Knight's skilled keyboard work. The late Felix Pappalardi's pounding bass stands right up with the rock greats, but this probably isn't the finest example that can be heard of his work. I will get in trouble with the hubby if I leave out the signature drum part from Corky Laing, so there, I said it. I love the way the two guitarist play off each other at the 12-minute mark, but I still think this is one jam that lasted about 5 minutes too long.
