Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

SOME BULLSHIT TOMORROW is the theme and it's all about dystopian futures and perhaps familiar places of history, altered, from before their time. Today's discussion is a time capsule of a corner of a music and subculture scene amongst the rubble of postwar England. This gaggle of strange kids, some more lethal than others, thrive whereas the countries greatest titles and traditions fall. Top of the Pops? Eurovision? Thankfully these still exist in this anarchic world. Buckingham Palace? Not so much. It's probably owned by a Texan now. All this observed from the past by Queen Elizabeth I with the assistance of the angel Ariel. We're talking about Derek Jarman's early queer-art-punk film “JUBILEE” from 1978 starring Jenny Runacre, Jordan, Toyah Wilcox, Adam Ant, Little Nell, Orlando and many more. A worthy entry for those into popular music history and their subcultures. A unique dystopian film representing an extremely chaotic, yet familiar England on the eve of the Thatcher era. A prophetic sickness from the mind of Derek Jarman. The Queen seemed to take it all in stride, really. Jarman really should have made the little person play Catherine. In Episode #176 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to Neil Arthur from Blancmange about the career-spanning compilation Everything is Connected (The Best of Blancmange 1979-2024). Blancmange's story is one of two distinct chapters. In the early ‘80s, they infused the emergent synth-pop scene with oblique lyrics, wry British humour and occasionally tabla-tinged sonics, an unlikely mix which saw them soar into the Top 10 with singles such as Living On The Ceiling, Blind Vision and Don't Tell Me. And since 2011's Blanc Burn album, they've taken that singular style into a new century and somehow become more prolific than ever. Now Blancmange brings all – well, 38 to be precise – of these highlights together with the career-spanning collection Everything Is Connected, released on London Records on 11th May 2024. Love Is The Call doesn't just resonate with Cast's musical history but also draws inspiration from the influential band, The La's. Although reminiscent of their timeless hits like Alright, Walkaway, Sandstorm, and Flying, the album showcases a unique evolution that Power couldn't have envisioned during the peak of their chart-topping singles era. While Love Is The Call takes listeners on a cohesive and immersive journey, it refuses to be confined to a single genre. From the captivating simplicity of Bluebird to the introspective and soul-stirring Tomorrow Calls My Name, the anthemic rock energy of Rain That Falls, to the rebellious punk vibes of I Have Been Waiting, and the infectious Merseybeat charm with an indie-pop twist in Look Around, the album fulfils John's ambition of creating yet another exceptional musical collection. While pulsating with life-affirming energy, some of its lyrics delicately touch upon the themes of the passage of time and the transient nature of life. In this insightful interview, John Power delves deep into the new album's creation, discussing not only its musical aspects but also his Irish roots, the departure of Jurgen Klopp from Liverpool FC, and many other engaging topics. Listen to episode #165 of The XS Noize Podcast with John Power – BELOW: Previous XS Noize Podcast guests have been Kula Shaker, Shed Seven, Future Islands, Peter Frampton, John Lydon, Nick Heyward, Steven Wilson, Matt Goss, Billy Nomates, Tom Meighan, Toyah Wilcox, Midge Ure, Travis, New Order, The Killers, Tito Jackson, Simple Minds, Divine Comedy, Shaun Ryder, Gary Numan, Sleaford Mods, The Brand New Heavies. The band was formed off the back of successes with our individual previous bands. With many gigs under our belts independently, as a unit we have now combined our experiences to produce Velour Fog, electrifying rock band from Hertfordshire. A Schwarzenegger of hard rock serving you an ass-whoopin of stone cold riffs, tasty licks, a smackdown of beats, and ball-dropping bass. Taking inspiration from 80s and 90s acts such as Guns N Roses, Primus, Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Alice in Chains and Ratt we are England's answer to a generation just looking to have a good time through the power of rock. Our sound hits harder than a steel chair shot. Prestigious British Music Producer Nick Tauber started his musical career drumming in an R&B band in the late Sixties. But he soon gave touring and became a studio engineer and subsequently joinedDecca as an assistant producer. This is where he came across Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy, remixed their first album and the rest is history. Nick has had a career spanning from the 70's to the present day, having produced hit records for some of the world's greatest rock bands/artists including Thin Lizzy, Def Leppard, Toyah Wilcox, Marillion. Slaughter and the Dogs, Stiff Little Fingers and black metal gods Venom as well as having smash hits in the charts with top pop acts such as Toyah Wilcox and Bloodstone, earning him a reputation as one of the industry's most respected producers. Flip to the present day and Nick still has his finger on the pulse, and a passion for working with young upcoming bands, as he continues to manage, produce and consult with new bands/artists.

Pop Screen has confronted some horrors in its recent Halloween month, but nothing like what Graham and Mark come up against this week: Noel Edmonds. The DJ-turned-mystical guru pops up in Glitter, one of two episodes of the 1970s anthology series Second City Firsts that feature pop stars, and it's enough to send Graham into a journey into the heart of Blobbyland. But there's also the film's main star to reckon with - Toyah Wilcox, captured here just before her punk makeover, committing the ultimate sin of singing with a band called Bilbo Baggins. Second City Firsts also dipped its toe into the pop pond with Squire, an excellent, magic-realist tale of a working-class dreamer played by Lindisfarne's Alan Hull. Which of our two hosts - the North-Easterner Graham, the North-Westerner Mark - is a Lindisfarne fan? The answer may surprise you! We also discuss the many, depressingly business-related reasons why the single television play fell from fashion, the recent British film that reminded us of Squire, the mystery of the leaping dog, and why Graham is a capitalist [EXPLETIVE DELETED]. If you want to keep us in the capitalist pig lifestyle we're accustomed to, you can donate to our Patreon, where you'll get Rob's reviews of unjustly overlooked Asian films, Graham's classic series Doctor Who reviews, and a monthly bonus episode of this very show - listen to the end of this episode to find out what the next one is, or follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for more news. #popscreen #moviereviews #secondcityfirsts #toyahwilcox #alanhull #lindisfarne #phildaniels #noeledmonds #topofthepops #bbc #newcastle --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pop-screen/message

June 1972 saw the release of David Bowie's album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which propelled the South London singer to stardom. Bowie's creation of the Ziggy Stardust persona was more than just a whimsical costume change, the whole concept had a meticulously planned gestation period and evolved many facets of his creativity. In a Melody Maker interview in January 1972, a few months before the album's release, Bowie openly discussed his bisexuality. Back then, it was a radical and potentially career harming gesture, but it became a defining moment for many gay people around the world. In this Archive on 4, Tris Penna, who worked alongside Bowie at EMI Records, assesses the origins of the album, artists Michael Weller and George Underwood discuss their schooldays and early friendship with Bowie, and Ziggy Stardust co-producer Ken Scott recalls the studio experience. “Young dude” Wendy Kirby, record plugger Anya Wilson, and former music exec Laurence Myers remember their time with “Ziggy” and singer Marc Almond talks movingly about the profound impact of Ziggy on his life. Singer and actor Toyah Wilcox talks about the creative inspiration Bowie has had for her since the age of 12, and brings the reviews of the time alive. The programme also includes rare archive material including a lost Bowie interview (as Ziggy) recorded in the Top of the Pops dressing room, a 1972 press conference, and insightful reflections from former band members Mick Ronson and Trevor Bolder. We also hear studio outtakes – as well as a lost BBC session version of the title song. Producers: Tris Penna and Sue Clark Executive Producer: David Prest A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.

Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is thebuzzr podcast. On air indie, from my pad to yours over the airways. Monday night, Gem & Leon from The Banquets join the podcast. We caught up with the band. Gem opens up about the inspiration behind their latest release and her own journey with depression. Leon has some insightful views on people coping with the pandemic. The Banquets roared onto the music scene in 2019. Fans love their rambunctious energy and unique blend of country, indie and rock. The Banquets have gone from strength to strength. Born from humble beginnings, fast becoming a band to watch. They have been on thebuzzr playlist since my first listen. Tracks played tonight: “The Beautiful” Influences for the song: The lyrics tell a semi-autobiographical story of lead singer Gem's ongoing battle with depression. Lyrical inspiration came from a line in Emily Dickinson's poem As Imperceptibly as Grief. A passage in the poem reads “Our summer made her light escape into the beautiful”. Thank you for tuning in. Enjoy the show! 10 P.M. EST at https://www.thebuzzrpod.com Cheers! Shay Band Bio The Banquets are an alt- rock/pop trio from Leeds with talent in their souls and ambition in their hearts. They had an explosive arrival to the music scene in 2019 and 2020, making an appearance at the Great British Folk Festival, and supporting the likes of The South (formerly The Beautiful South) and legendary icon Toyah Wilcox. The Banquets' music is a simple mix of rock, blues, and pop music, whilst maintaining the great tradition of British rock. The musical influences of the band stretch far and wide, and go right back to the early 20th century blues scene. Their sound is hugely impacted by the music that has flowed out of America over the last century, and like most British music, it reflects back that sound and rubs in some northern British magic. https://youtu.be/M6zeGxko--k Facebook Link Youtube Spotify Soundcloud Instagram

“You're never involved…” Dave, Kent and Bob are on fine form in this episode. Well it sounds that way at least. It's probably just the ale talking. Recorded early in 2021, so apologies for the delay. More bands run the gauntlet, more exterminations, more expletives, and a lot of beer and trips to the bathroom. Many thanks to Rob Turman, who sent us money to spend on beverages, and also on the Stygian Dark album mix. So if you think it sounds shit then blame him. He also sent in another song. Blame him for that, too. On this episode there are such tantalising titillations as: Possible intercourse with Jean-Michelle Jarre. When is an Iniquity album not an Iniquity album? Asthmatic oral pleasures between March and May. Lick your laptop in a B-movie frenzy. JK Rowling's rubbish book: Gordon Ramsey and the respectable Roe recipe. A country mile, a baker's dozen, and a short Stygian walk into a bar. Bring forth Toyah Wilcox and the nipples! Bludgeonly time distortions during the “WOOP” count for Guinness. Kent admits to holes in his musical upbringing. Or ball bag. Do you have a moment to talk about brains? Relating bollocks about past hosts. Is it Canadian, or a stroke? Nepotism: It rhymes with Benediction. Almost. Revenge: Best served cold, with feta cheese and dressing. It's the film that's so punk, it annoyed even the punks - Derek Jarman's Jubilee, with its motley cast including Toyah Wilcox, Rocky Horror legend Richard O'Brien, a pre-fame Adam Ant and at least one former tightrope walker, is our subject of discussion this week. Join We Are Cult's Mark Cunliffe and regular host Graham Williamson as they discuss Jarman's influence as a film-maker, a gay rights advocate and even a gardener, as well as the film's fascinated yet critical overview of Britain's first wave of punk. There's also room to consider the divergent careers of the film's stars, from the hugely influential original punk scene kid Pamela "Jordan" Rooke to Ian Charleson and Karl Howman: incestuous brothers in Jubilee, but the actors went on to have very different later careers. We also talk about punk's questionable, semi-ironic use of fascist and serial killer iconography, as well as the vexed question of why the British scene burned out so quickly - albeit leaving some tremendous music.Obviously money is a deeply un-punk statist control system created by the Man to keep us down, but we still need it.
