The high school football season kicks off this week with a flurry of highly-anticipated matchups. No season opener draws more attention each year in Greater Cincinnati than a non-conference showdown between Lakota West and St. Xavier. The rivalry is renewed Friday night as the Bombers host the Firebirds at RDI Stadium (7 p.m. kickoff). This will be the fifth meeting between the teams since the 2020 season including three consecutive season openers. The WCPO High School Insider Podcast highlights the game this week including interviews with St. X coach Steve Specht, junior quarterback Chase Herbstreit, senior running back Steven Napier and senior center Andrew Jennings along with Lakota West coach Tom Bolden. Lakota West defeated visiting St. X in 2022 while the Bombers won the 2021 matchup. "Such a special game last year; it'll be special this year," Bolden said. "I've said it over and over again: It's what's best about high school football when you can have games like that. Have them early or whenever but especially right off the bat. You'll know what you got. You'll know what you're good at. You'll know what you have to fix." Lakota West (13-1 in 2022), which has made three consecutive Division I regional final appearances, defeated the visiting Bombers 16-13 in the 2022 season opener. The Firebirds return plenty of talented playersincluding senior safety Taebron Bennie-Powell, who is verbally committed to Notre Dame. Lakota West has a new starting quarterback in freshman Jackson Smith after four-year starter Mitch Bolden graduated this spring. St. X (5-7) returns several talented players from last season including senior defensive lineman Ted Hammond, who is verbally committed to Michigan. The Bombers return junior quarterback Chase Herbstreit to lead the offense this season along with several other key starters. Friday night is expected to have a large crowd at RDI Stadium for two teams with significant expectations in Division I, Region 4. "I've always thought that you want great games early because it's going to define who you are win or lose - you're going to find out where you are real fast," Specht said. "I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. You want to challenge your kids every week. We definitely do that."More at https://wcpo.com/HSinsiderSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of their podcast, Kurush and Kalyan reminisce about the street food culture of Bombay and Calcutta (as the cities were then known) of their childhood and youth. From Kurush you will hear memories of the samosa-wala outside St Xavier's School, his first vada pav (which he remembers far more vividly than his first crush) and the secret of what went into kebabs outside Novelty Cinema. Kalyan talks about how it was the parar dokaner egg rolls which Calcutta ran on (not mutton kathi rolls), the chops and cutlets that the rolls shops offered and movie theatres in Kolkata which had bars. They reflect upon how there was a fair bit of Portugal, Spain and Great Britain in the desi street food that made them the men they are today. The episode ends with Kalyan's rant against Bengali home chefs who offer street food dishes and how they have messed it all up. How? You have to listen till the end! 'K&K Dig Food' is a podcast on food hosted by Dr Kurush Dalal and Kalyan Karmakar from Mumbai (and navi Mumbai). Kurush is an archeologist and food ethnographer, who is a proud son of Mumbai ,and is possibly one of the most quoted people in articles on Indian food written in recent times. He runs a series of very popular online courses on food writing and is a much sought after speaker in food events. He is married to a Bengali (not Kalyan), Rhea Mitra Dalal and runs Katy's Kitchen with her, a Parsi catering company started by his mother the late Dr Katy Dalal. Kalyan is a sociology student and an MBA, who started his career as a qualitative market researcher where he figured out that he loves interviewing people and moderating. Anchors he likes to model himself on swing from Dr Prannoy Roy to Cyrus Broacha! He is a food blogger, published author and likes to call himself a 'columnist' so that he can write about his breakfast and get done with work for the day! He is married to a Parsi (not Kurush), Kainaz Karmakar, who when not babysitting the three boys at home, Kalyan, Baby Loaf and Little Nimki (the last two are cats, but no one has broken this to them), works in advertising. Kalyan and Kurush bond over a shared love for food, wry humour and Valibhai. You can google the more boring parts about their lives.
