Ian Byrne is a British Labour Party politician. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Liverpool West Derby since the 2019 general election. In 2018, Byrne was elected as a councillor to Liverpool City Council, representing the Everton ward alongside Labour's Cllr Jane Corbett and Cllr Frank Prendergast MBE. He continued to serve as a local councillor after becoming an MP, donating his councillor's allowance to Vauxhall Law Centre.[9][10] In 2022, Byrne stood down from his council seat and was succeeded by his daughter, Ellie. On 3 November 2019, Byrne was selected as the Labour candidate for Liverpool West Derby, after the previous Labour MP Stephen Twigg announced he would be standing down at the 2019 general election. On 12 December 2019, Byrne was elected with 34,117 votes. This represented 77.6% of the vote share, a reduction of 5.2% from the previous election (compared to a nationwide reduction of 7.9% in Labour's share of the vote). Byrne is on the left of the Labour Party and was a supporter of the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn. He is a member of the Socialist Campaign Group and backed his Campaign Group colleagues Rebecca Long-Bailey and Richard Burgon in the 2020 Labour leadership election and deputy leadership election. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Byrne worked with Fans Supporting Foodbanks to scale up food distribution in Liverpool and co-ordinate local efforts to produce personal protective equipment for frontline NHS and care workers. In 2020, Byrne launched a campaign for the Right to Food to be written into UK law. On 14 December 2021, Byrne voted in favour of the Conservative government's 'Plan B' COVID-19 restrictions, including for an expansion of mask mandates and the introduction of vaccine passports. However, he was one of 22 Labour MPs who voted against mandatory vaccination of NHS staff.

What a time it is to be a Liverpool fan.A record start to a league season, six points clear at the top, and with the little matter of a trip to the defending champions Manchester City to come on Thursday night.Little wonder, then, that there is an air of excitement around the first Allez Les Rouges podcast of the New Year.Host Peter Hooton is joined by regulars Stephen Monaghan and John Nicolson, as well as Ian Byrne, fellow Red, local councillor, and founder of Fans Supporting Foodbanks, the partnership between Spirit of Shankly and Everton Supporters’ Trust that is doing vital and brilliant work in the community. After the 5-1 demolition of Arsenal made it nine wins on the spin for Jurgen Klopp’s relentless side, the panel question whether anyone saw this coming, and whether it’s best to keep your feet on the ground, enjoy the ride... or both! What they definitely do agree on is that Klopp is playing it perfectly, off the pitch as well as on it, where the belief he has instilled now means his players should be able to meet any challenge that comes their way.A big challenge soon awaits the Reds at the Etihad. But, with City trailing seven points behind, the lads reckon it is Pep Guardiola who is facing the biggest conundrum. The midfield section for the big clash is discussed as is the use of dark arts in matches of the magnitude of Thursday’s. Talk then turns to three thought-provoking articles that have been published recently, the first about the impact of Virgil van Dijk, and the latter two about Fans Supporting Foodbanks and the ‘Feed the Scousers’ chants aimed at Liverpool and Everton supporters by rival fans. And another must-listen podcast ends with a warm tribute to late Reds legend Peter Thompson before the panel look back on 2018 and offer their hopes and dreams for 2019.Without giving the game away, a victory over City would go a long way to making them a reality. Peter Hooton is back with his Allez Les Rouges podcast, a little later than usual, but with good reason, as he has been busy promoting his excellent new book, The Boot Room Boys: The Unseen Story of Anfield's Conquering Heroes. And joined by Liverpool season-ticket holders Joe Blott, and Ian Byrne, of Fans Supporting Foodbanks, they kick off another enjoyable show by talking about the book’s launch event, where the last member of the fabled Boot Room, Roy Evans, had the packed-out crowd hanging on his every word.Times have changed, and not just at Liverpool, but the lads can see similarities in the single-mindedness of Jurgen Klopp and the great man who created the Boot Room. While there have been comparisons between Virgil van Dijk and Alan Hansen, Peter reckons the Dutchman could be for Klopp what Ron Yeats was for Bill Shankly.Liverpool are hoping the centre-back is fit for the second part of the double-header with Chelsea later today, but while Peter and Co believe the performance in the Carabao Cup defeat underlined why the Reds now have serious strength in depth, they feel there is one player - and not van Dijk - who simply needs to play every game.Xherdan Shaqiri’s display in midweek is hailed but the panel argue the Swiss winger is still more effective coming off the bench.Eden Hazard produced a devastating cameo coming on for Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday night but Peter, Joe and Ian believe we will see the best of Liverpool’s front three this afternoon and that a match against his former club could be the one that sees Mohamed Salah’s season truly come alive. The podcast rounds off by highlighting the important work that is being done in the city by Fans Supporting Foodbanks, and a little bit about the group's special guest at last weekend’s win over Southampton, Jeremy Corbyn. In a very special Anfield Wrap podcast John Gibbons is joined by writer Tony Evans, Ian Byrne from Fans Supporting Foodbanks and Liverpool player Trent Alexander Arnold to discuss the importance of community in football. We discuss how the city influences the identity of the football club, how the values of the club are adopted by fans throughout the world and the complex relationship we have with footballers. Trent also describes what it means to be a local player for a club like Liverpool and how it feels to be representing us all on the pitch. Football without fans is nothing. The Elders were founded in 1998 by six individuals with a passion for music rooted in Americana and Celtic folk rock. From the beginning The Elders seemed to be channeling something ancient and enduring – something unaffected by fads, trends and the giant maw of mind-numbing commercialism. Their ability to bring together the art of story telling with elements both musically progressive and rooted in tradition, has won them a broad international fan base, as well as critical acclaim in numerous publications such as PASTE Magazine, Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange, Music Row Magazine, Goldmine Magazine, TRAD Magazine (France), Chicago Sun-Times, Kansas City Star and many more. Story Road, the 7th studio album, builds upon The Elders song writing reputation. The songs reflect delightful and often educational story lines, with vibrant narratives that explore history, legends, tall tales and true-life experiences. In addition to bands' trademark mesh of styles & textures, and lush, soaring vocals, the album features three barn-burning instrumentals. Their critically acclaimed albums serve as reflections of the group dynamic, but fans who are wild about The Elders can tell you that the real magic happens on stage, where their powerful personal and musical chemistry forges a deep sense of community with their audience. During the upbeat numbers, everyone is shouting gleefully, singing along and dancing as the band stirs up their latest moment of wild abandon. During the historical story songs, the crowd is rapt, hanging on singer Ian Byrne's every turn of poignant or whimsical phrase. There are mournful ballads along the way, but the crowd always knows there will be redemption in the end. The Elders have headlined major Celtic Festivals in North America and Europe. For the past 14 years they have sponsored a tour of Ireland in which fans are invited to join in on an extraordinary 13 day excursion visiting historical and geographical sights during the day and gathering at a local pub or ballroom at night for pints and performances by the band.
